BEA TORRES 28. Owner of the Phoenix Club.Â
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA Current Residence: Brooklyn, NY Gender/Pronouns: Cis Woman / She/Her Traits: passionate, honest, clever, jaded, stubborn, haughtyÂ
This here is Bea. Chances are you donât remember her from that one-hit wonder girl group that had precisely 4 1/2 minutes of fame in the early 20teens called BFF4L (so named for the initials of the four members: Bea, Fiona, Frankie, and Leah). It was an awful experience that Bea will pay good money to have permanently burned away from her brain once that technology becomes available.
She was born in Philly to an emotionally checked-out father and a nightmare of a stage mom. From an early age, she showed a natural talent for music, so when she was 6, her parents moved to the city so that she could pursue the best possible training and a career on stage. For the most part, Bea was mainly just happy making her mom happy and enjoyed being good at something, but as time went on, she definitely started to feel the pressure and she developed some pretty major anxiety issues.
When she was 14, she was cast to be a member of what was supposed to be the âNext Big American Girl Group.â Their first single was a huge hit, and they got to go on a world tour opening for a massive Jonas Brothers-esque band (or maybe it was the Jonas Brothers, idk Iâm being vague on purpose...) Basically, it was this huge mind-fuck and sheâd travelled the world and experienced way too much success all before the time she was legally able to vote. But while it was really fun at first, things turned toxic quickly. The girls had to pretend to be best friends in public, but behind the scenes there were lots of cat fights and backstabbings. Bea felt like her creativity was being smothered by what the label dictated. And worst of all, they never had another hit. Their second album flopped, and by the time Bea was 18, the dream was dead. BFF4L was not nearly as â4Lâ as they thought...
Bea was completely burned out and decided to leave music behind, instead deciding to pursue a normal life by going to college. It was during a night out with friends that she found herself at The Phoenix, and for the first time in a long time, the atmosphere made her fall in love with music again. She started hanging out there more and more, and eventually the owner took her under his wing. She started working there on weekends - first as a cocktail waitress, then a stagehand, before finally working her way up to being the house sound engineer.
Sheâs incredibly proud and passionate about her work, and attributes a lot of it to her mentor - who became almost like a father to her. She was heartbroken when he passed away recently, but shocked to discover he had left the venue in her name. She is now continuing on in a way to honor his legacy.
