Personally I always interpreted the Bone-Eater's Well as the physical manifestation of Kagome and Inuyasha's connection via the red string of fate!

The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of place, time, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break. This myth is similar to the Western concept of soulmate or a destined partner.

It goes back to Inuyasha's speech in the meido, how Kagome was born to meet him and he was born for her. They were destined to be together but they were born 500 years apart. They needed a portal that allows them, and only them, to travel through time so they can meet.

The shikon jewel forced Kikyo's soul to reincarnate in order to bring itself back into this world, and it wanted to use Kagome's soul to replace Midoriko as a fallen priestess to continue the battle of souls inside of it. But Fate had a different plan for Kagome. She was going to be the person that Kikyo couldn't be: the woman who was capable of healing Inuyasha's heart. Inuyasha, in turn, was meant to be Kagome's protector. He woke up from his 50 years of slumber when Kagome was in danger and he always came to save her, even when she was lost in the darkness of the meido.

The anime incorrectly tried to argue that the jewel shards were what allowed Kagome to go through the well but that's not true. The 2 times Kagome was locked in the modern era, she was able to open the well by wishing to see Inuyasha.

I did say Sumisawa, but I mean Sunrise writers in general tbh. I know that Sumisawa wrote the movies but I’m not sure which episodes he was a writer on, but I’m still going to list examples from the anime, movies and Yashahime to explain what I mean!

1. Inuyasha’s desire to become full demon

One thing that really bothered me in the anime is how they really dragged the whole “Inuyasha wants to use the jewel to become a full-demon”. In the manga in chapter 94 when he learns the truth about the jewel origin’s and how it always creates a cycle of violence, he essentially decides to end the cycle:

In episode 26 they didn’t include that part, Inuyasha doesn’t understand the danger of the jewel and says once again that he wants to use it for himself, which turns into a joke because Midoriko’s barrier yeets him out of the cave for being selfish:

I noted in my rewatch that there are other instances of this, specifically in episode 36 and 44, where Inuyasha mentions wanting to become a full demon when in the manga he doesn’t say that. It’s also a huge plot point in the second movie, when he says he’s only staying a half-demon “for a while” because of Kagome:

I know a lot of inukag shippers find this line romantic, but it doesn’t make sense at that point in the series. The second movie is supposed to take place after episode 95, and Inuyasha CLEARLY gave up on becoming a full demon because he transformed and killed humans in episode 52. He says in episode 52-53 / chapter 187-188 that he doesn’t want to transform anymore:

Also the whole point of the Ryūkotsusei arc right after this (episode 53-54) was that Inuyasha was able to surpass his father by mastering Tessaiga instead of relying on his demon blood... and as far as I can remember, that was pretty much the end of the discussion about him becoming full-demon.

2. Inuyasha is more cruel

There’s a few times in the anime where Inuyasha threatens to kill people instead of beating them. For example in episode 29 vs chapter 107:

That scene is especially weird because in the next chapter Inuyasha empathizes with Sango, says he understands why she can’t hate Kohaku because he feels the same way regarding Kikyo. And he literally says he doesn’t want to kill Kohaku, only wake him up...

Or there’s that scene in chapter 129 where Totosai reveals that Inuyasha is not cold-hearted and didn’t actually want to kill Sesshomaru:

Instead in the anime they talk as if Inuyasha really intended on killing Sesshomaru, they only mention that Inuyasha was “swinging his sword around” and that Tenseiga protected Sesshomaru:

3. Inuyasha being rude to Kagome

In most filler content Inuyasha is so unnecessarily rude to Kagome. An example from the first movie vs chapter 392:

Another example is episode 96. Here Jinenji talks about how kind and accepting Kagome is... and Inuyasha says this: 

She sits him after that and he’s like “You see!” but like.. The last time they saw Jinenji, Inuyasha opened up to Kagome about his past and he realized she was his home... It makes no sense for Inuyasha to even jokingly say that Kagome is cruel when she’s the first person to fully accept him as a half demon since his mother 🤨

In comparison in chapter 460, Inuyasha literally says that Kagome has a pure heart (because she always saves Kikyo despite her jealousy):

Also in episode 129 he implies that Kagome is ugly?? Even though they are clearly dating at that point...

Like, this Inuyasha?

4. Inuyasha “doesn’t know how to express his feelings”

Sunrise writers are under the impression that Inuyasha is incapable of expressing how he feels... It’s what they say in Yashahime episode 15:

Which was a super weird line. What do you mean he’s “bad at showing how he truly feels”? Inuyasha from early on in the series, sure. But Inuyasha post-canon when he’s married? Did they forget about the whole “Kagome taught me how to smile [...] how to make friends, how to shed tears for others...” ?? I would argue that Inuyasha is very open about his emotions toward the end of the series:

He’s also not as tsundere as Sunrise believe he is... In episode 90 he’s having a heart attack at the idea of him being in love with Kagome...

When as early as chapter 78 he was pretty much admitting his feelings to Kagome herself... (read from right to left)

This one is BY FAR Sunrise’s worse offense. This 15 year old boy is grieving the death of his first love, he has severe survivor’s guilt, but he’s still trying to move on and be happy with this girl who is healing his soul. Sunrise really thought it was a good idea to remove this ENTIRE scene, and replace it with this:

aaaand this is how you end up with 20 years of discourse and people calling Inuyasha a “cheater” and a “two-timer” 🙃

5. Inuyasha being 200 years old

I don’t have much to say about this, except that Sumisawa is solely responsible for the mess that is Inuyasha’s age. There is no mention of Inuyasha being older than he looks in the manga, except for this one line in chapter 3 where he says he probably wouldn’t be old after 50 years unlike Kikyo. He never mentions being alive for centuries, Rumiko doesn’t mention it either in interviews & blogposts when she’s asked about his age and his aging process. It’s just not an issue that’s ever brought up in canon or from Word of God, and yet Sumisawa thought it was a good idea to mention that Inuyasha is 200 years old in the third movie, without considering how much that affects his character... A real mess that also lead to years of discourse 🙃

Kikyo was kind. It was undeniable.

The memories Inuyasha had of her were always in her careful compassion, the way her outstretched hands would gently lift a fallen child, or mend a sprain of an older human. How her whole self seemed to lean towards the object of her attention, always in kindness and patience and sympathy. To people, or gardens, or sometimes even him.

In these moments, a soft, gentle smile would grace her features. So delicately pressing her cheeks and lifting her eyes in a way that was so incredibly special and one of a kind. Like seeing a sun rise for the first time. A gentle cool wind against your face. Small, delicate, indescribably beautiful. A rarity. He had longed for it. He still did.

For someone meant to be a reincarnation of Kikyo, Inuyasha thought that Kagome would have that similar gentleness and grace. That calm composure. He would feel himself frown at every opportunity he would look at her and not see Her. It made him angry, even though he knew how irrational that anger was. He felt himself grimace, and tighten his hands. She was never her. Not even for a moment. And it upset him.

…

But there was still that kindness.

It wasn’t soft and gentle like a sunrise. It lacked the grace and carefulness that Kikyo possessed. It was glaring and impossibly warm. A sun at the height of day. Burning, bright and everywhere.

And unlike the wonderful rarity of Kikyo’s smile, Kagome’s came easily and often. Grins spreading across her face at every turn, unabashedly crinkling the corners of her eyes. The hearty laugh that would loudly announce itself was so completely out of place from the face of the girl he once knew. He tried to recall memories of such a laugh from Kikyo. Nothing. Softer maybe? Breezy like a sigh? He couldn’t remember. But Kagome’s was gratingly different.

It was annoying, and his frowns earned angry remarks spewing from this other girl. She was so confrontational. Nothing like her! But Kagome’s anger at least was always quick to disappear, never deep to root, and then, minutes later, once again, her grin would press itself into her face.

Gods, it was so impossibly warm.

Unbearably even.

Inuyasha could feel the back of his neck grow hot and his head spin a little sometimes. Like he felt sick, or maybe terribly dehydrated.

Kikyo never made him feel sick like this. He hated it. And he hated Kagome.

But only….

Only sometimes.
