Urusei Yatsura OCs - Rika and Mitsuko part 2

Just as Lum finishes up her “divine retribution” on her “darling”, the odd couple notice the two younger girls in the neighborhood awkwardly staring at them. Rika’s bubblegum bubble pops, leaving a sticky pink mess around her face; her expression almost unchanged. And her little sister Mitsuko’s top chocolate scoop of ice cream tips off from her cone and plops to the pavement right next to her shoe as her jaw is agape in astonishment. Without another word, Lum and Ataru part from each other, after a few more seconds of awkward silence, the boy and alien just walk back inside the Moroboshi household as the two girls stare at each other, unsure what to make of this development.

This one was a bit more complex for me to work on; while I had the composition thought out, getting everything set in place in a comic book-like format was another story. In fact, getting Lum and Ataru’s expressions right with the help of a video was a bit of a hassle, especially with the rough sketches. Not to mention getting Rika’s head in the right spot in the top panel and how her awkward stare should look or where to put the thought bubble and sound effect. Otherwise, I think I captured the awkwardness pretty well in this.

Urusei Yatsura OCs - Rika and Mitsuko Introduction part 1

During one of Lum and Ataru’s earliest “arguments” since the former started living on Earth to be with her Darling, two neighbors: 14-year-old Rika and her 8-year-old sister Mitsuko, have the awkward opportunity of watching the anarchy play out as Lum zaps her Darling with her electric powers. Rika and Mitsuko were just out on a leisurely stroll, with Rika chewing a nice, big wad of bubblegum to keep her awake and concentrated after getting her little sister a triple-scoop ice cream cone. On their way home, they just so happened to hear the commotion by the Moroboshi household of Lum angrily giving Ataru a dose of “divine retribution”. Once finished, the two “lovebirds” awkwardly notice the two girls staring at them; Rika bewildered at the sight through her giant bubblegum bubble and Mitsuko fairly surprised as she licks her top scoop.

Being a long time fan of “Urusei Yatsura”, I thought it would be interesting if there was a little Greek Chorus residing in the neighborhood watching the many misadventures of Ataru and Lum along with their zany frenemies; starting out as “the staring kids” not unlike Rusty McAllister from Disney and Pixar’s “The Incredibles”.

As for the drawing itself, when I started working on it, it wasn’t too hard to get the composition the way I wanted it. Though I may have drawn Rika’s varsity jacket a little too big. It was also my first time using color theory for parts of the picture with Crayola colored pencils; after learning that in my landscape painting class, I was curious how it would look. Overall, I think this turned out pretty great. Just stay tuned for part 2.
