I’ve noticed that people are often interested in the other countries’ classical literature but refuse to read their own. Maybe it’s because we were forced to read things that we couldn’t clearly understand yet (like honestly, who thought that it’s the right time to read “War and Peace” when you’re 17 y.o.? Omg). I’m not even talking about the fact that they praise classics too much so you can’t take them seriously
Most of the Russian students tend to avoid reading classics too but in both my schools we were obligated to read at least the main parts of the books (they were actually pretty big parts)
THE ABSOLUTE BASIS OF RUSSIAN CLASSICAL LITERATURE
(in which the order is random)
Things I’ve read from the beginning till the end:
“Crime and Punishment” (Dostoyevsky) (it’s a psychological thriller, so many people find this book interesting. I’ve read it like 3 times)
“Woe from Wit” (Griboyedov) (meh)
“Eugene Onegin” (Pushkin) (I like it but I hate it, mostly because the Pushkin’s figure is overrated)
“Fathers and Sons" (Turgenev) (strongly recommend this one. Easy and satisfying to read)
"The Novice" (Lermontov) (my grandma likes to read this poem by heart so I like it automatically ^^)
"The Overcoat” (Gogol) (Gogol is a big WTF for me but this one is not as edgy as “The Nose”)
“The Nose” (Gogol) (the edgy one)
Things I haven’t read fully (but should’ve):
“War and Piece” (Tolstoy) (I know like ONE person who’ve actually finished the whole thing and they’re a little bit cray-cray XD)
“The Captain’s Daughter” (Pushkin)
“The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” (anonymous)
“A Hero of Our Time" (Lermontov)
"The Government Inspector (Gogol)
"Oblomov" (Goncharov) (is actually good but I had no time to finish it)

My personal recommendation list:
"Crime and Punishment” (Dostoyevsky) (the English translation of this book is easier to read than the original imao, so you may give it a try)
anything that Turgenev wrote. His style is smooth and easy to keep up with
anything that Chekhov wrote. Same here
“Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District" (Leskov) (if you want smth spooky)
"Demon" (Lermontov) (if you want some love drama)
I’d say I like modern Russian literature more than the classics. I don’t think that it’s as popular as the English literature though. Have you ever heard about "The Gray House” by Mariam Petrosyan or “The Funeral Party” by Lyudmila Ulitskaya? Or anything else? I feel like out literature is pretty local XD
