Sometimes a cast of characters in a book or whatever is implied to be overwhelmingly white as that's just assumed to be the "default" so fandoms will take it upon themselves to do colour-blind casting to make it more diverse, but they haven't quite learned racist/colourist stereotypes and archetypes so now we've got people just doing. god I don't even know how to describe it. it's got the stench of fucking "banned books week" on it. thousands of adults congratulating themselves for reading books literally no one is trying to stop them from reading while doing nothing to improve access for the young people who are the ones actually having those books made off-limits to them.

also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.

the issue with growing up in the 2000s and 2010s was like there was this really big push toward "accepting your weirdness" overall but they meant like idk wearing mismatched socks or something not being tangibly beyond the norm in any way shape or form
