The fact of the matter is that the fact that their defence tends to include at least 1 if not 2 wingers converted to defenders says a lot about how they see the defence and the role there 😅 not to mention both Sonnett and Davidson are all in on going forward - they've decided high risk high reward works for them, and AKB is part of that. AKB is who they built that style around, but its still working as designed for the most part. Obvs there are bad passes and mistakes made - as there always will be. AKB herself isn't immune from them, but I don't think that we need to wipe away a whole defence just to give AKB her credit.

Berger being a fantastic goalie is not undermined by her defense being fairly strong as well. It is shakier now, the cb pairing is not what I would choose and asking carter to be a fb takes away from a key strength but ultimately still stronger than most teams in the league. berger is playing the style the team asks of her and is doing it amazingly. The defense is also playing the style the team asks of them - high line, constant pressure, attacking minded.

Not to be offensive but so you only care about the stats if they suit you? Gothams defense is the 5th best of the NWSL and more or less as good as NCC and KCC just below them. So it's more or less mid in the NWSL this season and it shows watching the games. It doesn’t get better looking at G+ data

Also Gothams/ The NWSL weird Thing with you can't be nomitated for POTM/ Save of the week because you won the week even though you clearly shown a Performance that waranted it, is pissing me off

Gothams defense is overrated they just really overperform their conceded xG. Part of it is great goalkeeping and part of it is poor finishing from the opponents like Ludmilla missing a more or less open net and hitting the post after Howells bad backpass as an example. 10 goals conceded vs 18.9 xG conceded is a crazy overperformance. Berger also has the best GA/xGOT rating atm with 0.74

Dickey, McGlynn, Silkowitz, Smith, Campbell and even Anderson recently have been better than PTJ. And not only a little bit

Ha Bayern taking Ella Rauscha who was mostly signed for the 2nd team with them, as the only one. She is 16, just arrived and now going to Japan with the senior squad, must feel insane 😅. I guess she maybe is coming instead of Gilles (as in ticket, she isn't a defender).

Not having a clear #1 is dumbest thing you can do because you don’t want your goalkeepers playing not to make mistake but play freely. Otherwise you don’t get the best out of them. Hayes has no idea about goalkeeping as has been visible for over a decade now and her selection for USWNT is also crazy. Most goalkeepers in the NWSL are levels above Tullis-Joyce who can make an athletic save she wouldn’t even need to do if she worked on her positioning & her horrible handling, she can't claim crosses despite her height because she is not good at reading the game at all and is so poor at passing that I don’t even trust her to just simply pass it to the center backs. This might be enough to impress in the WSL but even someone still as rough as Silkowitz has already surpassed her after one year as a starter in the NWSL.

I think, considering how we have seen Jess get abuse several other times and never react - thinking particularly of the overwhelming homophobia around her engagement and then again when she left Chelsea and the racism around the UWCL Final in 21 - and what she said at the time - that she's never needed the support like that, and that she never had been affected by it as badly before - I suspect we will never know how bad it got, but can probably make some guesses 🫤
