Itās how Ellwood and Gauntās arcs follow those of the stories of the figures they worship before the war
Tennysonās The Charge of the Light Brigade can read like a tribute piece to the ānoble six hundredā soldiers who sacrificed their lives for king and country, giving themselves without a thought, but looking closer we can see Tennysonās disdain for the Charge, the futility of it: āTheirs but to do and dieā. Ellwood was ready to give himself like the soldiers of Balaklava, but after charging āso knowingly, so hopelessly, into the jaws of deathā like the very same soldiers he romanticised, his illusions of grandeur about war dissolve into a sickness for it.Ā
Gaunt read the works of, and about, Thucydides. Gaunt knew how he was exiled from his home of Athens during the Peloponnesian war, allowing him freedom to meet the Peloponnesians and see the war from their side, to write his accounts from both perspectives. Gaunt too is separated during his war, resulting in his experience of seeing how the men across no manās land are not unlike the ones he fought with.
These were stories they knew intimately. They dreamt about them, recited them to each other, made them their muses. They just didnāt know these stories were to be their stories yet.
possibly one of my favorite scenes in in memoriam is near the end of the book when gaunt and ellwood are on the train. ellwood panics so quickly but gaunt is so quick to pick it up and so quick to distract & comfort him. he even gets ellwood to laugh. itās at a point of their story where ellwood isnāt sure how to feel everything he used to feel so the gentleness that is still there is so so special. i honestly feel like that scene is something of a turning point in their post-war relationship that is proof of how perfectly they still fit together, despite everything.
All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred
ellwood sees gaunt roll his shoulders in the boxing ring and can barely keep his composure. do you get me

these boys will simply never leave my mind will they. ack
anyways guys give me ur theories for what they're looking at (subtle conversation starter)
ghosts and fire, and what comes after.
I find it interesting how both Ellwood and Gaunt's injuries reflect what's most important to them. Ellwood's face wound and loss of an eye costs him his beauty and good looks, while Gaunt's chest wound loses him his strength and physical fitness.
but also that these traits are not important to the other person. Gaunt's love for Ellwood doesn't come from his handsome face - he loves his poetry, his passionate spirit.
likewise the moments Ellwood feels closest to Gaunt are those of emotional intimacy, where Gaunt shares his feelings in a way he wouldn't with anyone else - not his feats of strength or impenetrable toughness. he loves his vulnerability.
I like to think that the other's wholehearted acceptance is what helps piece themselves back together after the war

I thought the earth remembered me, she took me back so tenderly, arranging her dark skirts, her pockets full of lichens and seeds. I slept as never before, a stone on the riverbed, nothing between me and the white fire of the stars but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths among the branches of the perfect trees. All night I heard the small kingdoms breathing around me, the insects, and the birds who do their work in the darkness. All night I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling with a luminous doom. By morning I had vanished at least a dozen times into something better.

Some people in fandom desperately need to become obsessed with something SUPER niche and obscure. Something with like 10 active fans at the very most. Something with only 6 fics if you're very lucky, all but one written by the same dedicated fan. Something where when you do find a fan account, it's been innactive for years. Something that's not available on streaming and its only physical release was never released in your country. Let it humble you.
