THE ADVENTURES OF NICK AND MITCH!
Bastymania is really all about these two guys. There is no story without them. The reader gets an inside peek into their private moments. A lot of those moments were in a state of gonzo drunkenness.
Take Mitch, for example. He is impulsive to begin with. Once he's had a few he can be reckless, and he thinks he's invincible.
He'll burn rubber and cross three lanes of traffic without so much as thinking about it. Nick, usually the out-of-control one is left with his heart in his throat. Nick has to stay relatively sober to keep his friend from swooning in inebriated tangents.
Like Broadway. Mitch thinks he's a Broadway star when he's drunk. He'll start singing loud renditions of "High Hopes'. You know the song."Once there was a little old ant, thought he'd move a rubber tree plant…"

In the early days of touring, the boys of the Bastion found meager accommodations for sleeping. Sometimes they had to sleep on the floor of the van. Other times they squeezed two to a tiny bunk. The Cleverly Brothers didn't mind that arrangement and sometimes continued to squeeze themselves into a single bed. It went on for years.... And it never occurred to either of them that there might be anything sexual about it. What do you think?
HIGH FASHION PUNKS!
They dressed each other. Fashion is an important component of every rock musician's brand and the Cleverly Brothers were no exception. The two teenage founders of the Bastion early on experimented with various costumes to boost their image as cool, with it and heavy, man. But Mitch's father would not allow his 15-year old son to wear black leather. No son of his was going to look like a gang member. Nick had other ideas for his pal. After all, looking like gang members was the the point. So Nick appealed to Mitch's vanity to convince him how very, very cool he would look in a black leather biker's jacket. Yeah, and once Mitch saw himself in the mirror it took all of two seconds

EYEBALL TO EYEBALL The Nick Athorn-Mitch Malone partnership is creative, intense and remarkably lucrative. They are songwriters, yeas, but also revved-up ambition machines.
