I think that people who avoid Hey, Melissa! like the plague are missing out on such a deep and complex character.
Melissa obviously dehumanizes the men she dislikes by treating them as her dogs, but she also dehumanizes the men she does like (Paul) by completely and thoughtlessly idolizing them. When Paul breaks Melissa’s delusion of him a being a flawless person, it changes the way she treats him in literally the snap of a finger.
However, since a very frightened Paul takes on the role of ‘Puss’, Melissa doesn’t treat him the same way she treated Ted. Her motive shifted and Paul had become something that Melissa adored deeply. Even if it wasn’t real love, Paul had no choice but to be around Melissa. He had no choice but to like Melissa, and though it was all out of fear it was clearly enough for her.
It’s such an uncomfortable episode, but I think that’s what makes it so perfect. It’s a look into the mind of a very manipulative, very unwell woman with VERY questionable morals.
I will think about her forever and ever!
