Inspired by Nick Fancher and his brilliant lighting work, here’s a frame from a fun shoot I did with awesome musician Calista Kazuko a little while ago. It’s really cool technique that uses additive colour theory to mix the three secondary colours, cyan, magenta and yellow back into white light. Three speed lights, three gels, job done. ‘Love Me’ makeup by Roxy Ley.

Wednesday is data day! I run a big array of redundant hard drives in a NAS box, but that’s storage, not backup. I’ve always felt that unless you have three independent copies of your data in different locations, you’re not safe from a data loss, so every Tuesday night, I run a backup of my photo archive, and on Wednesday, I take a bunch of these bad boys down to my studio, open up the safe and swap them over with last week’s backup drives. Combine that with a cloud solution on my Zenfolio site and I’m happy that my data is secure, both locally and off site.
When it comes to digital data, there are two kinds of people; those who have had a drive failure and those who are going to have a drive failure. My hard drive of choice right now is the WD RED 4TB disk. I’ve been using them since they came out and they’re cheap enough to keep lots of them about. I use an Anker SATA external hard drive docking station and plug them into the NAS as an extra disk. It’s not hard to do and as a photo professional, my clients expect that their images are safe with me for years to come if they ever need them again.

The idea was pretty simple - make a wooden box (it took about a day and cost £25 in wood from B&Q), shoot a bunch of different looks in the studio with her in it and then composite them all together to look like she’s in a honeycomb. It was a long day, but we all had a whale of a time shooting it - Calista’s a brilliant laugh and a total hoot to work with.

I’ve been offline a bit lately as I’ve had a lot of client jobs. In my spare time, I’ve been working on my latest fine art series - and here’s one of the first finished images from it. This isn’t a composite - all the snow effects were achieved in-camera by turning my studio into a blizzard of fake snow and using SFX makeup on the model for a wind-whipped look. Last week, I got a call from Sav at The Flash Centre to tell me that the new Elinchrom EL-Skyport Plus HS had just come in and did I want him to hang onto one for me? Hell yes I did - here’s a snap of it on top of my camera where I’ve just been testing it out in the studio.
If you’re an Elinchrom user, this thing really is like all your Christmases come at once. Even if you’re shooting Quadra A heads like me, its new Hi-Sync mode is going to up the sync speed to 1/500th and buy you at least an extra stop of power. If you have compatible kit (like my D-Lite flash heads) then you’re looking at high speed synchronisation all the way up to your camera’s fastest shutter speed. It really is *that* good. Oh and it allows you to control all your flashes and see what power they’re set on, as well as turn the modelling light on and off right from your camera. It even has a little laser focus assist grid that it can project out the front. Frankly I’m surprised it doesn’t play MP3s and let you make phone calls.

Last week I was booked by the Women’s Equality Party to live stream their policy launch on YouTube. If you go to the WEP YouTube channel, you’ll also see the work I did with awesome digital tech Denis of www.bigreddesign.com putting together a BSL-interpreted version of the video by filming the interpreter signing against a green screen background and then merging the two in Adobe After Affects.
Before I did the concept for this image, I had to learn a new word. If a diptych is two and a triptych is three, what you have here is a quadriptych. Each shot is unique and none of the colours have been manipulated in Photoshop; this is all the work of Makeup Artist Siony Foulds, matching her palette to the four product colours. My model was the very lovely Casey Jane Rand and all the retouching and composite work was done in house.
Last Thursday I did a PR job for the new Women's Equality Party at an event they were holding in Central London. Afterwards, we made some quick portraits. L-R this is party leader, Sophie Walker, and founders Sandi Toksvig and Catherine Meyer. Earlier this year, Sandi Toksvig quit her job as host of BBC Radio 4's The News Quiz in order to help set up the party, which is campaigning for equal representation of women and plans to field candidates in the 2020 general election. I had sufficient room at the venue to gaffer tape up a background paper and use a 500w flash with a big Elinchrom octabox to make this shot. What I hadn’t banked on was the massive difference in height between my subjects!

Back up your data, people!
I'm currently migrating all my data over to a new NAS drive array with much more storage capacity - it's currently chattering away, copying all my data across. I've also got a proper system in place for swapping out disks on a weekly basis so that I can keep another copy of all my photos in a separate location.
If you're unfortunate enough to have your hardware fail, if there's a burglary or a fire, you need a robust backup solution so you don't lose your work. The rules I work to are:
1. Maintain at least three copies of all data 2. At least one of these should be offsite or in the cloud 3. Backups and synchronisation at least weekly 4. Cards not to be wiped until data is replicated
