The Barn.

is back!

I know we’ve been on kind of a break in the scene, but The Barn is back and better than ever.

With artists who are filled with talent and passion, you’ll be sure to see an array of the arts here, just drop by a show!

From music, to paintings, to literature, The Barn will have it all, just keep your eye out for the future; there’s plenty in store!

Among many folk singers from the west, queer artist Porch Cat stands out with many releases ranging from easy listening dark folk, to major key, fast folk punk.

They currently play in a “circus-folk-blues” influenced project called The Ragshakers based out of Portland, Oregon busking their way down the coast and playing with prominent artists of the American folk punk scene such as Billy Mack Collector.

Porch Cat has just released their newest album “Heartlines.” It is a five-song release filled with the sweet sounds of contemporary folk and mostly bittersweet lyrics.

 A good example of this would be the title track of the album. The second verse reads:

              Cut my hair and not my arms

Don’t forget to look at the stars

There’s so much that I should have said

While I was laying, bleeding in that bed

  I’d be a fool to say I knew exactly what this meant but to me this sounds of hope and turning something around but still acknowledging the terror they have been through. Part of the concluding chorus wraps up the song with the line, “Take all the time trying to figure out your heartlines and how to love and be alive.”

 I’d be willing to bet Porch Cat is spreading a message about getting better.

 This album spoke to me, and probably many others across the states. Please listen to this album. I suggest you buy it. You may already know this, but being a folk punk artist is one of the worst paying jobs in the world and there aren’t many breaks.

In closing, Porch Cat released another damn good album, and I’m glad they exist.

Have you been looking for a folk punk duo that will have you singing along your first time hearing them? Slow Motion Commotion is your band. This duo hailing from Kansas City, Missouri released their album, “Nice Thing don’t happen to Assholes like us,” sometime in 2013.

  “Our first album is basically a look into our lives around 2011-2013 when Shane's sister and Ian's father passed away,” says the band.

  After only listening to half of this album I have already downloaded it. A lot of the song structures meet the standards of most American folk music, and the lyrics, moods, and concepts of the songs are relatable in ways that could keep listeners coming.

  The second track of the album, “Kansas” comes in hot with the harmonica and tells the story of the everyday, American folk punk kid. The harmonies on the chorus are loud, energetic, and will have you singing along right away.

  I would say this album has already earned a spot on my future car rides to nowhere.

  If you aren’t listening to Slow Motion Commotion already, then you better rethink your musical taste.

“U Dun Fukd” is a 7 track album written by up and coming folk punk maniac Moose Knukle. He is a nightmare, and you should keep him away from your children or he will turn them into Satan worshipping, anti-government psychopaths.

This man is dangerous.

The first track of the album, “Drugs in my Ass” sounds like children’s music written by Satan himself. The peaceful melodies, repetitive melodic chanting, and strange musical structure make for a beautiful sound.  It can compare to the vocal style of most angry folk punkers, but the lyrics could compare to the style of… no one really. This is a minute and twenty-four seconds of listing illegal drugs.

        The second track is called, “Boats.” The mood is melancholy, and smooth, with light, acoustic picking. I would suggest this song for anyone trying to calm down and think about the physical structure of a sailboat in a poetic way.

Hey look it's me complaining about being stupid and unsuccessful before I got successful. I sound stupid at first but give it a chance, It has a happy ending.
