Portofino on my mind....
My photo libraries are over whelming....and are TOTALLY out of control. I stumbled across some images from my Italy trip, in 2012; that I had never processed. This one captivated me then and it captivated me today.Â
"Spy Dogâ
Didnât everyone want to be a P.I. when they were growing up? Â I know that I âdidâ. Â Â
Was this desire fueled by so many favorite TV Shows, movies and fiction novels?  The characters in these shows/movies/books like:  Magnum PI, Remington Steele, Charlieâs Angels, Rockford Files, Moonlighting, Nancy Drew, John MacDonaldâs Travis McGee, Sue Graftonâs Kinsey Milhone, Simon Templar, Sherlock Holmes, Sam Spade, Inspector Jacques Clouseau, ACE Ventura Pet Detective, etc., all painted an exciting (and even comical) image of what a PIâs live was like.
I have to admit I was secretly excited when Jack told me he was going to become a P.I.  He finished the Private Detective training and now begins a two year apprenticeship.  I was thrilled to join him on his first âstake-outâ last week.  His mission was to surveil this person  and find out where they live.  We wondered what this person was guilty of--did they allegedly committ insurance fraud, with false claims of debilitating injuries, or what?.  We would âtailâ them from their place of employment to their home.  Up to now, they  have been elusive with no current âknown addressâ.  My job was to capture the video and stills.   Sounds exciting, huh?
I hurried home from work, changed clothes, and collected my camera gear so that we could get into position. Â Bella joined us to enhance our cover as a ânormal familyâ and make us look very inconspicuous. Â Sounds good right? Â
We were scrambling to get in position and had to grab a dinner from McDonalds.  I felt like Kinsey Milhone right out of a Sue Grafton novel.  It was ânovelâ and exciting!  We began by locating her car and checking the license plate to be sure we would be following the correct car.  It felt very wrong and suddenly felt painfully obvious as we drove through the parking lot.  The reality is that we went unnoticed.  We positioned our self for the long wait only to realize we could be locked into this parking lot.  This put us driving in circles for awhile trying to find the perfect new location.  Now we were much more visible.  The windows on my car are very tintedâŚbut how invisible/visible were we truly?  We concocted our cover story in the event that we attract any unwanted attention. The story:  we were waiting for our daughterâŚno! our sonâŚ(no confusion onto which name to use), to arrive to help them shop for a new car.
There were moments of adrenaline sprinkled in with long periods of monotony and Yahtzee. Â Yes, there was Yahtzee that we played on our iPhone. Â The rule was that if it wasnât your roll; you were âeyes on subjectâ. Â Â âThere she is!â Â âSheâs on the move!â Â âSheâs made us!â Â You could feel our breath in those moments. Â Do we duck? Â Do we leave? Â Those moments were frenetic with one being the voice of reason, âNo, they didnât see us and why would they think anything of us?â to âThey looked right at us! Â They know!â Â Itâs those moments that I doubted what was ever so alluring about being a PI. Â We were KeyStone cops, or Ace Ventura, at best. Â Bella played her part the best.
âSheâs on the move!â Â âGet the camera!â Â She geared up to leave work and brought her car out of the back parking lot; repositioning it, so that it wouldnât be locked in. Â The minutes ticking away were palpable, as she waited until the moment that she could leave with her co-workers. They stood outside the front door, smoking and generally looking in our directionâwaiting and LOOKING our way! Â You knew they were waiting until the moment they were free of work....but, the looking at us? Â The adrenaline was pulsing and we decided we had to move!
We relocated and parked in a nearby Waffle House parking lot.  It gave us a safe distance, yet good vantage point.  Jack left us on foot, to get a better & closer visual  of her car.  I was instructed to wait for his call to pick him up.  After a few minutes the uneasy feeling started to sink in as I looked at the 3 or 4 other cars parked near me.  All black big SUVâs with one or two intimidating individuals standing near or in-front of their vehicles.  I looked inside the restaurantâno one inside.  I looked to the street and it was alive with skanky creatures scurrying about in the darkness.  The street was ALIVE and heavily populated with sleazy looking individuals:  druggies and hookers.  I again looked at the SUVâs near me and I felt the adrenaline again.  Who doesnât fit in this scene?  ME!  What was a single female doing here?  The only people here were either selling or buying drugs or sex or both.  OMG!  I didnât have my gun! I felt their eyes on me!  I felt like prey waiting to be pounced on!  The eyes of the thugs by their SUVâs, were fixated one me.  They were now  glaring at me!  It was at that moment I realized my presence seemed much more sinister to themââIâ was there to either buy or sell drugs or sex!  My skin crawled!  It was time to move!  There wasnât anything about this adventure that I was enjoying.
It wasnât long before Jack came running to the carâŚshe was on the move!  Traffic!  So much Traffic!  She darted in and out of traffic; changing lanes to hop skip aroound the cars that impeded her escape.  âSheâs made us?â  She was getting away!  We were in hot pursuit and realizingâŚthis âtailingâ thing isnât as easy as you would think.  We finally caught up to her at a red light. Jack starts the frenetic doubting, âShe knows we are following her!  These head lights and grill are very distinctive!â  I covertly tried videoing her license plate (some lovely bokeh and blurry images) as I wiggled about.  Again, videoing from a moving car is not as easy as you would think!  âShe knows we are following her!  Sheâs trying to shake our tail!â  Itâs doubtful she truly knew we were following her,  rather that she was a seasoned commuter that was mearly dodging around slower moving cars (cars shopping for the wares of the streetâeww! ) and eager to get home.  The comedy continued:  âwe lost her!â âthere she is!â  âmove over to that lane!â âget closer,â and finally after about 40 minutesâŚ..âweâve lost her!â  Truth was we had lost her 20 miles earlier.  The P.I. that Jack is working as an apprentice under, was not pleased that we lost her.  His first assignment too.  The condescending tone in his voice screamed âamateurâ and âlooser.â Â
I was glad to have had the experience as âKinsey Milhoneâ or âNancy Drewâ (grown up), but just as happy to retire as a P.I. Â âChecked that box off. Â I don't want to be a P.I.â Â I meant it. Â
UntilâŚ..the next opportunity to âkeep Jack out of troubleâ (I told myself that).  This time we were seasoned and left Bella at home.  Should I put my hair up, where a ball cap?  We drove a different car, and we picked a better, more discrete stake-out spot.  We had the knowledge of knowing her habits and which direction she would be leaving work.  âWe got this!â
âSheâs on the move!â  and we were in hot pursuit.  I was the DM (Driving Monitor â taken from pilot rolls) giving direction:  âmove over to the left lane,â âget closerâ, âsheâs moving overâŚâ etc.  We totally had this down!  The adrenaline was addictive.  When she took a detour around traffic and a traffic light; we followedâcovertly, nailing it.  But, we did loose her as we got stuck behind a car that blocked us (reading text messages or such).  We considered the night a success, as we had gotten so much further. Â
We drove by âlast known or possible addressesâ looking for the vehicle. Â We narrowed it down to âthe oneâ it had to be. Â âWe were so close!â Â
Itâs obvious, now I have to come up with a PI name -- because clearly Iâve got this and I canât wait for my next opportunity to resume the chase. Â

âCalgon...take me away...â
So, now I date myself. My hard drives are filled with thousands of untouched RAW images that are OVER - WHELMING to tackle. Today, I waded in, with the intention of a mental escape (no processing=no over whelming). I still am trying to figure out how to âbreak freeâ of past processing ~HDR~ styles/techniques and trying to forge a new direction (hopefully, a work flow that takes less time).Â

Mmmmmm.....sherbert colored buildings.
Portofino is a place that totally captured me in itsâ spell. Â I wandered around this little, once fishing village, totally intoxicated. Â The buildings fall under the jurisdiction of the Regional heritage laws, that dictate that the buildings of âhistoric significanceâ must be decorated in a âparticular wayâ and must be maintained to these strict standards. Â The intricate details of the masonry are facades or âtrompe l'oeilâ (means âtricking the eyeâ). This includes everything from simple detailing like garlands, or curlicues to arches, sills, portals, pediments, porticos, architraves, pilasters and more--all painted on.
Sometimes the details can be deceiving. This beautiful Bell tower is completely embellished âtrompe lâoeilâ, as is the green and yellow striped building behind it. The covered terrace in the foreground, is a mix of both art forms: masonry and trompe lâoeil.
A few blocks away from the harbor, the homes are decorated with actual masonry and all the details are real (second and third pictures).Â
âPeople Watching Peopleâ
I find it difficult to do street photography....somehow the voyeuristic nature of it, makes me feel a tad uncomfortable; as I steel a moment to keep for myself. I do love people watching. I love how different and at the same moment, just how 'the sameâ we all are. In that moment, I immerse myself into their story; and try to feel that âmomentâ through their eyes.Â
Vacationing in my mind....
Cinque Terre.....a little slice of Italian Heaven
Itâs no secret that I love, love, love Italy. Iâm also enjoying creating images with texture overlays that help to infuse the blurry eyed vision that a new love imprints in our heart. New love may not see things objectively, but they certainly see the beauty.

Jardin du Luxembourgâs best crepes.Â
This crepe stand was divine and so perfect, it couldnât possibly be real. I understand this stand burned down...but the memories of the chocolatâ crepes will never fade.
Lost in a Summer Daze.....wandering Capri, Italy
Can you think of a better place to be lost than Capri? The warmth of the summer sun kisses your skin. I wandered in a daze as I became more and more intoxicated with the magic of Capri. Letâs meet in Capri.

~Tea Time~
Stolen moments to cherish: Â a delicioius cup of perfectly steeped tea (thinking Peach Black tea tonight), a classic viynl album (as it was intended to be savoured. Â Could listen to some Joss Stone tonight), a deep conversation about anything--even Gouda cheese, sunshine on your face in the winter time, laughing over nothing, looking through old photos or remenicing about our momâs tea cup collection. Â I miss you mom. Â I miss you every day. I miss you when I reach for the phone and start to call you ....and then I Â realize youâre not there to answer. Â You are still #1 on my quick dial. Â I think you will always occupy that spot. Â
