Barcelona - present moment.
"I didn't lie about Isabel," you started, the words coming out carefully, like you were defusing a bomb between you. "I did have bleeding. You saw it. A few weeks after we discovered the sex-"
"You said you lost her," Alexia interrupted, her voice sharp and brittle. Finally, you were addressing the elephant in the room, the massive truth that had been sitting between you like a third person at the table.
"And I remember the bleeding, but…" she said, fighting to keep her voice from cracking. "Yo-you told me you had another miscarriage. Y-You were miscarrying! I saw it! I-I don't understand!"
Her voice caught on the word miscarrying, as if even saying it out loud was physically painful.
"I thought I had," you said, your voice cracking too despite your best efforts to stay composed. "I truly thought I did. That's why I ran away. I-I couldn't handle another loss, Alexia. I couldn't bear you looking at me like that again."
Like you were broken. Like your body had betrayed both of you. Like you were the reason your dreams had died.
"You left me," you said. "I was alone all the time, an-and then I thought I was miscarrying and-and you left! So I ran," you finished quietly. "You had left me during the first miscarriage; I was scared it would happen again."
Alexia was silent. Completely, utterly silent. Her mouth opened slightly, like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out. She just stared at you with those honey-coloured eyes that you used to be able to read so easily, eyes that were now a storm you couldn't navigate.
"I spent a few weeks in Portugal," you continued, needing to fill the silence before it swallowed you whole. "In Lisbon. And… and I didn't go to any doctors because I thought, if it was really a miscarriage, it would just pass like the first one did."
"But it wasn't a miscarriage," you said, the words feeling surreal even now, five years later.
Alexia looked up at you, her lips trembling. You watched her try to process what you were saying, watched her mind desperately struggling to fit the pieces together into something that made sense.
"After two weeks, I started to feel some movement," you continued, your hand unconsciously drifting to your stomach even though Isabel wasn't in your womb anymore, even though she was almost five years old. "And my belly started to grow, just the smallest bit. That's when I realised it hadn't been a miscarriage."
Alexia's breathing had changed. It grew shallower, as if she were trying with all her strength not to hyperventilate.
"So I went to the doctor," you said. "And by then, I was five and a half months into the pregnancy… and she was right there. She was alive, and-"
"You ran away," Alexia interrupted, and suddenly there was anger in her voice. Hot, burning anger that had been simmering for five long years. "You ran away, but you could have come back. You knew you could!" Her voice rose. "Fuck, you left in the middle of the fucking night! I woke up that morning believing I had a wife and a daughter, and when I came back you were fucking gone!"
The pain in her voice was like a physical blow. You could see it all playing out behind her eyes, coming home to an empty apartment, calling your phone over and over, the panic setting in when you didn't answer.
"I left because I thought I suffered a fucking miscarriage and you left me alone to go play a fucking game, Alexia!" you shot back, your own anger finally breaking through the surface as well.
"You think I went to play a game?" Alexia shouted. Her hand slammed against the table; the crack made you flinch. Tears were threatening to spill from her eyes. "Do you have any idea what state you were in? Do you have any idea what you were saying?"
You froze at the desperation in her tone.
"Y-You were just staring at the wall! You weren't there," Alexia gasped. "I was begging you to go to the hospital. I tried multiple times! I was kneeling on the floor, holding your face, screaming your name, and you were just standing there, staring right through me. You kept murmuring that you killed the babies. Over and over! I killed them, I killed them again. Do you know what that sounded like?!"
"I tried to talk to you! I tried to pull you out of it, but you wouldn't acknowledge me, respond to me. You were lost inside your own head, and I thought-" she stopped herself, dragging in a breath before continuing. "I thought you were losing your mind. And then I started thinking I was losing my mind, that none of this was real!"
Alexia's hands were shaking now. "I was panicking. I was drowning right next to you, and I didn't know what to do to help you!"
She wiped her face with the back of her hand, hiding the tears before they could fall properly. "I didn't leave because I cared about the game," she whispered. "My brain just… broke. I couldn't process what was happening, so my mind grabbed onto the only thing I knew: I have a game. I must get on the bus. That was it! I was out of my mind!"
Alexia swallowed hard.
"I drove without stopping at a single traffic signal. I got to the team bus, but I couldn't speak. I couldn't look at anyone. The girls knew something was wrong the second they saw me. I stood outside the bus and…" she closed her eyes, her face twisting. "I threw up there on the pavement. I couldn't breathe; it felt like my chest was collapsing. Like I was going to die."
Your heart started beating faster, picturing the scene in your mind.
"The medical staff rushed over. Obviously, the bus left without me. Irene was recovering from an injury, so she stayed behind with me on the sidewalk while I tried to explain what had happened, but I couldn't even form the words. She called the team psychologist from the parking lot. They tried to calm me down, tried to figure out why I was hyperventilating."
Slowly, Alexia lowered her voice.
"And while they were trying to ground me, Alba called. She said she had just walked into the apartment, and you weren't there." She looked at you, eyes filled with hurt. With abandonment. "Your bags were gone; your clothes were gone. You were gone."
You couldn't help it… The tears started to spill over. For all those years, the only image you had carried of that night was of yourself being left behind. You had never realised you had done the same thing with Alexia. You had thought that if she could choose to leave you alone while you were in that state, then you had every right to bolt as well.
"I ran back," Alexia whispered. "Well, Irene drove me back. I asked her to stay downstairs, an-and my chest was burning, and I wasn't even processing anything anymore." Her voice broke again. "I was just begging that Alba was fucking with me. But the apartment was empty. You had left. You vanished… an-nd I also had lost Isabel, and you and-"
You were ready to open your mouth, but Alexia didn't let you speak.
"I was shitty to you," she continued, staring directly into your eyes. "I put football above everything else. I treated you like you would always be there, no matter what I did, no matter what happened, because we had been together since we were sixteen. I had this idea that you would follow and be with me, that you would always be there, and that it was okay for football to come first. I did leave you when we lost the baby boy; I was awful to you in every possible way."
"I was a shitty wife. I know that now. But I-I cared. I didn't leave you alone because I didn't care about you. I was out of my mind. I loved you, and I loved Isabel a-and I'm sorry, okay?"
You weren't exactly following every word Alexia was saying.
That day had been traumatising enough that you didn't remember much of it. What remained painfully clear was the blood, the empty apartment, and the certainty that you had been left alone and Alexia wouldn't come back anymore.
Your ears had been ringing. You could barely see through the tears in your eyes. You remembered Alexia taking care of you, but you did not remember her talking to you.
You had assumed she was in one of those moods where she tried to fix everything up through practical actions instead of addressing the emotional issues that were the source of the problem. You remembered telling her no when she asked to take you to the hospital, but you didn't remember her asking you repeatedly.
You didn't remember her kneeling in front of you, holding your face, trying to make you look at her. You were having a mental breakdown, but maybe she had been having one, too.
That didn't make what she had done okay. It didn't make what you had done okay either. But at this point, sitting across from her, you could see that Alexia wasn't trying to excuse herself. She wasn't asking you to forget what happened or pretending that football hadn't come between you. She was taking accountability.
She wasn't asking for a new beginning with you. She was asking for one with your - her - daughter, and you could give her that, or at least try.
You were pulled out of your thoughts when an awkward cough interrupted the oh-so-dramatic scene you were both in.
A younger waiter, no older than twenty years old, stood beside the table looking deeply uncomfortable as he shuffled his feet, which made him look vaguely like a penguin. Your old Alexia would have rolled her eyes and laughed if you had told her that. This Alexia would probably tell you to have some proper manners.
"I'm-I'm sorry, Ms Putellas," he stammered nervously, glancing at Alexia before looking at you, "And miss. Co-could you please keep it down a little? Some of our other guests are complaining about the noise."
Alexia blushed while both of you looked around, noticing for the first time the more than a dozen pairs of curious eyes watching the two women causing a scene over their food.
Those messy lesbians. You could almost hear some of the more conservative ones thinking. Can't live a normal life even if they tried, huh?
You only hoped none of them knew who Alexia was. You didn't want this ending up on the cover of a magazine. You didn't want Isabel to be involved in any of this.
"Of course," Alexia said smoothly, her voice was impassive as ever, controlled. God forbid anyone see her lose her shit. "We're sorry."
The waiter smiled nervously before turning towards you and clearing his throat. He had started shuffling his feet again. It was becoming annoying. "Miss, you are Isabel's mother, correct?"
Your blood ran cold, and Alexia's controlled façade faltered for a millisecond before becoming untouchable once again. The panic surged in you in small waves of adrenaline and pessimism.
Had Isabel hurt herself in the hotel playroom? Had she fallen? Had she broken her arm? Oh God, was she missing?
"... Mhmm, Miss Isabel is asking to leave the playroom," the waiter explained gently. The shuffling had finally stopped. "She scraped her knee. It is all taken care of, but she's asking for you. Would you like someone from the staff to bring her over to the table?"
You exhaled. Okay. Just a scraped knee, you could deal with that. "Oh, yes, of course. Please do," you gasped, relief washing over you, although not as quickly as the panic that had taken over your body,
The waiter nodded and walked away. You turned your attention back to your ex (technically still) wife. You needed this to be over… You needed to start a new chapter in yours and Isabel's life. Isabel didn't deserve messy.
"You fucked me up, Alexia," you said quietly, taking in a deep breath. "And I know I fucked you up, too."
Alexia narrowed her eyes, her shoulders rigid. She was a little more muscular than she had been when you had been together. She nodded slowly, not denying it, but not completely agreeing with you either.
"I… I suppose I can't keep Isabel out of your life now that you know about her," you said.
Alexia's face hardened. "I suppose you're right."
"So, we can arrange something," You continued. "We can make sure you spend time with her. But I need you to promise me something, and I mean it. You won't use your money, or power, or whatever influence you have to take her away from me."
You hated that you were shaking, that you were admitting, even indirectly, that some part of you believed Alexia was the stronger one. Survival of the fittest. Your life depended on her.
In response, Alexia's expression softened, and she looked more like a human being than a tough, all-might athlete. "I already told you the first day I saw her that I would never take her from you," she said. "Never. She has two mums, and that's it. I don't want to take her away from you, and I won't."
The knot in your chest was still tight, still suffocating you. "I know, but… I need you to put it in a contract that I can sign. So, I can be sure, Alexia. So, Isabel and I are protected. We used your egg. I know if you filed in court, you could ask for a DNA test and prove you are her biological mother, and I would lose her-"
Alexia cut you off, not so gently this time, repeating it firmly. "Isabel has two mums. We used my egg, but you carried her. You gave birth to her. You took care of her. That matters more to me than whatever genes she has," then her voice softened slightly. "If you want, I'll have my lawyer draft a paper, an agreement, or something like that, for your peace of mind, si?"
You nodded, grateful.
"But…" she continued.
There was always a but, wasn't it?
"I also want to be in Isabel's documents. She has two mums, and I want my name on her birth certificate. I want access to her passport, vaccination card…" She paused, looking suddenly concerned. "Wait. She's vaccinated, right?"
You rolled your eyes. "Of course she is. Do you think I want her to get measles?"
Alexia looked at you, deadpan. "Just checking. Anyway, I want to be on every one of her legal documents."
You looked down at the table. You couldn't really say no; it was her right.
"Yes, of course," you hesitated. "I- well, I don't have much money right now, but I can hire a lawyer when I book some more photography gigs and-"
Alexia blinked. "What?"
"Oh… I work as a photographer now. A professional one."
"I know that," she said, rolling her eyes. "I meant about paying for the lawyer. Don't worry about that. I'll take care of it; just send me any documents my lawyer might need."
Your cheeks were just the slightest pink. "We can split the coat. I know anything involving lawyers is expensive."
Alexia put her elbow on the table. "I said don't worry about it. It's all taken care of."
You tilted your head. "Did you get involved with some sort of mafia scheme when I was away? Where is all this money coming from?"
Alexia shrugged. "Women's football is growing. More media coverage means more publicity contracts. Plus, sweetheart…" she smiled. "You get a bit of a salary raise when you are a two-time Ballon d'Or winner."
You creased at her.
"You are cockier than I remember."
"Richer, too," she winked at you, and for once the tension between you didn't seem as painful as before,
Maybe. M A Y B E. You and Alexia would be able to co-parent without wanting to pull each other's hair out.
Progress!
"Speaking of money," Alexia said, leaning forward, her tone now turning pragmatic. "I also want you to give me your bank account details so I can transfer money to you and Isabel. We can figure out what works best for you, weekly or monthly payments."
Okay, you were definitely going to pull each other's hair.
"I'll make an account that Isabel can access when she turns eighteen. You can deposit money there. I don't need your financial help. I'm good. We're good."
You added that last part, wanting her to understand that Isabel was taken care of. That you had managed, that you didn't need Alexia.
Alexia tutted. "I'll deposit the money into both accounts, then. Isabel is the daughter of a millionaire footballer… She will live like one."
You raised your eyebrow at her shameless arrogance, but Alexia continued before you could argue. "Starting with where she stays. The two of you aren't going to live out of a hotel room, sí? That's non-negotiable; she needs comfort and security and well…" she paused. "A garden to play in."
"Alright, but I'll pay the rent-"
"I will deposit money into your account so you can find a proper home for her, and for you," she said. "If you want help, I can put you in contact with the realtor who found my house."
"I can find a home on my own, thank you," you said and paused, softening just the slightest. "I'm just getting used to being in one place again."
Alexia nodded, her eyes remaining on you, letting you know she was listening.
"I'm not living in one of those grey, square houses with ginormous doors, though," you added dryly.
Alexia huffed and crossed her arms. "There's nothing wrong with those types of houses."
You rolled your eyes. "Of course you live in one of those lifeless houses. How did I not guess?"
"I have good taste," Alexia said, lifting her chin. "And it's not lifeless. I have a lemon tree."
"Sweet as you, right?" you said, smiling sarcastically.
"Even if I'm cockier now, you're way more annoying than I remember you being," Alexia shot back, rolling her eyes at you. "And judgy."
That actually offended you. "Excuse me? I'm not judgy! I've lived in over twenty countries in five years; I know how to appreciate differences!"
"Judgy," Alexia repeated again.
"I'm cultured," you corrected. "There is a difference between being cultured and wanting a house that actually looks like human beings live in it, rather than one used merely to show off money."
"It's minimalistic," Alexia said defensively. "And clean, and it has lots and lots of natural light throughout the day."
"It's boring."
"Well, you are not the one living there, are you?" Alexia asked, raising an eyebrow
"Thank God I'm not!"
"Great then. Problems solved."
"Why are you screaming at mama?"
A small voice piped up right beside your table, and both you and Alexia froze. Isabel was standing next to one of the hotel staff members. Her hair was pulled back into a very loose ponytail. Her honey eyes (identical to Alexia's) darted between the two of you.
"Mama, why was she mean to you?" Isabel asked again as she walked over to your side. The staff member gave you an apologetic smile before leaving the three of you alone. Isabel immediately pressed her face against your chest and wrapped her arms around you. A little cat she was.
Alexia looked taken aback by Isabel's question. Her mouth snapped shut, and her cheeks flushed beet red as she stared down at the little girl clinging to you.
"I-I wasn't screaming," Alexia stammered, her usual commanding voice seeming to disappear completely. She looked nervous. "I wasn't being mean. I promise I wasn't screaming at your mama."
"Your voice is scary," Isabel insisted. Her tone was firm, and it resembled Alexia's a whole lot. "It seemed like you were screaming. Mama says screaming is rude."
That clearly wounded Alexia. She didn't seem to appreciate the idea that her voice sounded scary.
It was almost funny, seeing that Isabel already had Alexia wrapped around her little finger. Or perhaps it was seeing just how much Alexia cared about her opinion.
You lifted Isabel onto your lap, gently pinching her cheeks, something the little girl hated, but you continued to do anyway because you were scared that one day she would grow out of them.
"Nobody was screaming, Bebel, alright?" You said gently, trying to put Alexia in a good light. You were starting to realise that you wanted Alexia to be involved in Isabel's life now that she had promised she wouldn't take her from you. "We were just having some very loud conversation."
Isabel turned and looked judgmentally at Alexia. Damn. Maybe you were judgy after all, and maybe you had passed that trait down to Isabel.
Alexia looked like a deer caught in headlights. Taking pity on her, you decided to offer her some grace. "Do you remember Alexia, Bebel? She came over to our hotel yesterday. She wanted to talk to mama and meet you?"
Isabel nodded slowly. "You are mama's friend,"
Alexia nodded back, her posture softening. "Yes. An old friend."
"And you play football," Isabel added.
A smile broke on Alexia's face. "I do. And if I remember correctly, you told me yesterday that your mama says football is stupid."
You rolled your eyes.
Isabel nodded. "Yes."
Alexia glanced up at you, her eyes silently asking for permission before she spoke again. You appreciated her for it, for that unspoken glance.
"Would you like to play football with me someday?" Alexia asked Isabel, looking just as nervous as she was when you two were fourteen and she asked you out to the cinema with her for the first time. "So you can see how much fun it actually is?"
Isabel looked at you first, looking for approval. "And my mama, too?"
Alexia looked at you, not certain of what you would say. You nodded slowly.
"Of course," Alexia said. "The three of us can play."
Isabel considered Alexia's invitation, then gave her a small nod. "Hm, okay."
There was a rather uncomfortable silence then, so you stepped in to break it.
"Someone told me you have a scraped knee," You told Isabel. "Can I see it?"
Isabel, dramatic as ever, pouted, her expression turned deeply pained. "Yes, mama, it's hurting so, so much, look!!" She pulled her trouser leg to show you her knee, where a single Hello Kitty band-aid sat.
"Oh no!" You faked empathy. "Wow! You must have been so very brave when they put that on."
"Yes, mama," Isabel said. "I was so, so brave. But I need a kiss, mama. Kiss it better?"
You smiled, unable to resist her charming face. You leaned down and pressed a kiss to Hello Kitty's head. "There, bebé. Is it better?"
"Yes, it's all healed!" Isabel said happily. Then she turned her eyes to Alexia and squinted suspiciously. "Do your kisses heal?"
Alexia was taken aback again. "I-I don't know? I've never tried to kiss someone's knee better--?"
Isabel nodded slowly. "Okay."
"Yeah," Alexia added awkwardly. "I can try, though. Do you want me to kiss your knee?"
Isabel tilted her head. "No. It's all healed now."
"Oh, yeah," Alexia said. "Of course. Maybe next time then."
You had to bite back a smile. The two of them were so awkward.
You cleared your throat and looked down at Isabel. "Well, Bebel, Alexia falls a lot because she plays football."
"I don't fall a lot--" Alexia started to protest, but she caught your gaze and promptly shut her mouth.
"So, she knows exactly how you feel," you finished proudly, happy to be building bridges.
"You fall?" Isabel asked Alexia, looking her up and down as if expecting to find her whole body decorated with her own Hello Kitty band aids.
"Sí, sometimes," Alexia admitted, resting her chin on her hand. "I fell really badly once. It was a bit scary, and I couldn't play for a whole year."
Isabel's eyes widened. "Really?"
Alexia nodded. "Yep."
"Your mama couldn't kiss it better?" Isabel asked, turning her head back and forth between you two.
Alexia softened. "She tried, but it didn't work. I was hurt pretty badly.
"Was it a scraped knee?" Bebel asked.
"No," Alexia explained. "We all have these sorts of rubbery things inside our knees that hold everything together, and mine tore in half."
You stared at Alexia. You hadn't known that. After leaving, you hadn't kept up with football news, but you knew enough to recognise how devastating that kind of injury could be… an ACL tear. A whole year away from football, career-ending for most footballers.
"Oh.." Isabel said. "Mama, if that happens to me, will you kiss it better?"
You smiled, "Of course, bebé…"
Alexia immediately interjected, thinking she was being smooth. "Don't worry, it won't happen to you! It only happens to people who run really, really fast.
Alexia's once wounded pride mirrored itself perfectly in Isabel's face.
"But I can run pretty fast."
Alexia lifted her hands in the air. "Oh no – yeah! Of course you do, sorry."
"And I jump too. Very high."
"I can imagine, yeah," Alexia said, already looking like she was sweating under the four-year old's words.
You leaned back in your chair. Maybe you were going to enjoy this whole co-parenting thing after all.
"So, since I run pretty fast, my rubbery thing can tear too," Isabel stated, as if her biggest dream in life was to have an… injury?
Alexia tilted her head. "I mean… if you want it to, I guess?"
"Are you hungry, Isabel?" Alexia asked, trying to change the topic of the conversation. "Would you like some food?"
Isabel looked up at you first, and you gave her a small nod, which was enough for her to turn back to Alexia with a smile. "Yes, please."
"Okay," Alexia began, reaching for the menu. "Let's see what they have on the children's menu-"
Isabel's little jaw dropped in offence. Her little shoulders tensed up, and her chin tilted up. "I don't eat from the children's menu!"
Alexia paused, still holding the menu.
"I have good taste," Isabel declared, parroting Alexia's exact words from minutes ago. "And a refined… pa-la-te," she struggled over the word, but her serious face made it adorable.
Alexia stared at her for a moment, a grin emerging on her face. "Oh, you do?"
"Yes!"
"Alright then. So maybe I can order some zarzuela for us?"
Isabel opened her mouth, about to agree, but you spoke before she could.
"No," you said quickly. "She's allergic to seafood."
Alexia's mouth comically hung open. She looked down at Isabel in disbelief.
"You're allergic to seafood?" she asked the girl. "How come? You are Catalan."
Isabel tilted her head in confusion, looking at Alexia as if she were crazy. "I'm not Catalan, silly. I'm Portuguese. Mama says I was born in Lisbon."
The playful mood that had settled over the table evaporated.
Alexia's mouth remained slightly open, but this time, her entire body had gone still. She looked up at you, her eyes filled with hurt, before turning back to Isabel, processing the reality of the situation.
Isabel hadn't been born in Barcelona. Alexia hadn't been by your side when you gave birth. She hadn't been there for Isabel's first words, her first steps, or her first birthday. Her first home wasn't Catalunya, her nationality, her culture, none of it was Catalan. Something so deeply connected to Alexia, to her family, to the way she understood herself, had never been part of Isabel's life.
"Yes," Alexia swallowed, forcing a smile. "Yeah. You are Portuguese, sorry."
The waiter came to the table, and Alexia ordered a complete seafood-free meal.
You thought it was time to explain to Bebel that Alexia wasn't just one of your old friends who had suddenly appeared in your life.
"Bebel, you know how Alexia's mama's old friend?"
Isabel nodded.
"Well, she told me she would really like to be your friend, too," you explained gently. "So… is it okay if she spends a little more time with us? With you?"
Isabel thought for a second, her eyes shifting to Alexia, then at you. "… Alright."
Alexia's eyes widened, and they seemed to be filled with profound gratitude. She looked up at you and mouthed a soft and silent thank you.
"What's your favourite colour?" Isabel asked, putting Alexia under a new interrogation.
Alexia blinked, but then smiled. "Red and blue. Yours?"
"Mine too!" Isabel said. "I like them because of Spider-Man."
"Oh! Well, I like mine because of my team, Barcelona," Alexia said, matching her excitement. "You like Spider-Man a lot?"
"Yes!" Isabel smiled. "You too?"
"Of course I do," Alexia lied, nodding along
Alexia hated every single superhero movie there was.
Isabel was beaming through it all. "Yay! What's your favourite Spider-Man film?"
Alexia froze again, her mind entirely blank. Was there more than one movie? Panicked, Alexia looked over to you for help. You subtly lifted two fingers above the edge of the table.
Alexia caught the gesture and looked back to Isabel with oh, so much confidence. "I think the second one is really cool."
"I like the second one, too!" Isabel said happily.
"Wow, we are so alike, don't you think?"
Isabel squinted her eyes and shook her head. "No, because you are big and I'm small."
"Well… you will grow up someday," Alexia pointed out.
"When I grow up, then we'll be alike," Isabel said.
Alexia leaned a little closer, her tone now very tender. "I think we are already alike. Your eyes are the exact same colour as mine."
Isabel furrowed her little eyebrows and turned her head to you. "Is that true, mama?"
You looked between them, between the two pairs of identical honey-coloured eyes staring back at you. "I can see the resemblance, yes."
That was all the proof Isabel needed. "Okay… Our eyes are alike. You can be my friend if you want to."
Alexia's eyes were shining. "Thank you, Bebel. I'm really looking forward to being your friend."
THE END
or is it?
The Spider-Man phase
Alexia spent one of her two free days binge-watching everything Spider-Man related so she could pass Isabel's quizzes and impress her. She was later caught by Vicky and Kika at training, debating with Patri - who was also a Spider-Man fan - over whether Miles Morales was cooler than Tobey Maguire.
Miles was cooler.
The house hunt
Alexia tried to show you five differences - in her words - minimalist and modern box houses closer to where she lived, so she could stay near Isabel. You and Isabel (who truly did have good taste) rejected every single one.
You ended up with an actual cosy house in Vallvidrera, with a huge garden and playground for Isabel. Alexia initially complained about how the house looked old and not vintage, claiming the security was awful. But after watching how happy Isabel was when she discovered the house had a basement, Alexia immediately let it go.
The school talk
"She's not going to a catholic school!" You said angrily, glaring at Alexia as both of you sat on a very uncomfortable wooden bench at the playground. A good thirty centimetres of space separated the two of you.
"She's not going to play in the mud all day either," Alexia shot back instantly. "She can do that at home without me paying 100k euros a year!"
"It's not just playing in the mud! It's a Waldorf school! It's about arts and respecting one's individuality!"
"Same thing," Alexia said, rolling her eyes and waving her hand. "I actually want her to learn how to write and do math."
"Waldorf school do all of that! The only difference is that they didn't actually subsidise half of the world's colonisation!"
Alexia rolled her eyes again and leaned even more into the bench. "Oh come on. Isabel is going to primary school, not sailing on the age of discovery!"
"How can you even consider putting her in a Catholic school? It's so absurd… We're lesbians! Both of us! Damn it, she was born via IVF!"
"And?" Alexia argued. "It's a reformed catholic school"
You deadplanned at her. "Do you even hear yourself right now?"
You shook your head and called Isabel across the park. She came running over, her hair full of sand from playing in the sandbox.
"Bebel," you began smoothly, gesturing at Alexia. "Do you know how to pray?"
Isabel shook her head, smiling at you with one of her front teeth missing. "No!"
You turned back to Alexia with a smirk. "See, Alexia? You really want to put that kid in Catholic school?"
Isabel was later put in an international school. Middle ground.
The talk
After six months of Alexia being in Isabel's life, you two realised it was finally time to explain to her who Alexia really was.
"Do you remember what mama told you about families?" You asked Isabel, sitting her on the brown sofa you had recently bought. "How all families look a little bit different."
Isabel nodded. "Yes! Some people have just a mama, some people have just one dad, some people live with their grandparents, some people have two dads, and–"
You gently interrupted her. If she listed every single family structure in the world, you would be sitting there until bedtime.
"Exactly…well," you said, looking at Alexia. "Mama spent your whole life telling you that our family was just the two of us, right?"
Isabel nodded, looking at Alexia.
"Mama was wrong, amorcito," you said softly. "You don't have just me. Alexia is your mami, too."
Alexia offered a nervous and hesitant smile. She was very nervous about that conversation, which resulted in her becoming uncharacteristically speechless.
"My mama?" Isabel tilted her head in confusion. "But she's my friend."
"And your mami, too," you explained. You cleared your throat, trying to figure out how in hell you were supposed to explain reciprocal IVF to a kid. "Children need two parents to be created… yeah? What happened was, a loong time ago, Alexia and I wanted to start a family. So we took a little seed from Alexia, and put it inside mama's belly so you could grow."
Isabel looked back and forth between you and Alexia. "A seed? Am I fruit?
"Mhm… no. You're a human."
"Homo sapiens," Alexia added, for God knows what reason.
"So why did you say seed?" Isabel asked.
"So you can understand me better," you told her.
"Oh," Isabel said, clearly not understanding at all. "So Alexia has seeds?"
You blushed. "Well, everybody has seeds."
"You have seeds?"
You nodded. "Yeah, sort of."
"So why didn't you use your seed to make me?"
This was going in a much, much harder direction than you had anticipated.
"Because we wanted you to look like Alexia," you said quickly. "That wouldn't happen if we used my seed."
Isabel tilted her head. "Oh! Okay… so do I have seeds, mama?"
Before you could dig yourself into a hole, Alexia stepped in.
"Well, your mama's using metaphors so you can comprehend it better, but in reality we used my ovum, which contains half of your genetic material, and we placed it into your mama's uterus. You can think of it like the house where you grew. So you have my DNA, but you were born from your mama. That way, you have two moms"
You deadpanned at Alexia.
"Alexia, she can't understand a single word of that."
Alexia was very convinced that her explanation had been informative enough, so she looked down at Isabel. "Of course you can, right, Bebel?"
Isabel stared back at Alexia. "No. I'm five."
Alexia blinked, feeling completely defeated. "Oh, okay."
Isabel quickly broke the silence that took over the sofa. "But… I have two mums now?"
"Yes!" you and Alexia said happily. The conversation had been messy and confusing, but the point was made, right? That was an absolute win-"
"So you are married!" Isabel declared proudly. "Yayy!!"
The happy smile on both your faces faltered instantly.
"No," you and Alexia blurted out in unison. "No. Nooo!"
"Absolutely not," you said.
"Nope," Alexia shook her head.
"We just happened to be together once, had you, and now we live separately." You explained. "We are not married, amorcito, okay? We are not together."
"Oh," Isabel said. Processing it all, she looked sadly at Alexia. "Is that because Alexia is married to Olga? You can't marry two people?"
You and Alexia looked at each other. This kid was going to drive you both insane. Should you talk to her about poly relationships?!
"Exactly," you said, trying to take some control of the conversation back. "You can't marry two people. That's exactly the reason why we aren't together."
Isabel nodded, processing the new information. She then turned her face to Alexia. "Alexia?" she said.
"...Yes?" She asked cautiously, scared of what might come out of the kid's mouth.
"You can un-marry Olga and marry my mama instead."
Alexia blushed very deeply. "I-I can't do that, Bebel. I love Olga."
Isabel frowned and crossed her arms. "No, you don't. Last night when I slept at your house. I heard you two talking, and you said she was the most annoying person you had ever met in your whole entire life, and that you hated every minute you spent by her side."
Alexia's face went entirely pink, and you had to bite back a smile.
Leaning slightly closer to Alexia, you murmured, "Oh no! Did I lose my spot?"
Alexia rolled her eyes, shooting you a look; "Don't worry, no one's more annoying than you."
The healing kisses
After months of co-parenting, Alexia tried to kiss Isabel's scraped knee when she took her to play at the park during one of her weekends with her.
Isabel was surprised, staring at her knee and then up at Alexia, saying, "Wow! It worked, Mami! Your kisses heal like Mama's!"
Alexia parked her very expensive car in front of your garage, and Isabel came running out with her overnight bag on her shoulder. You smiled big, dropping to one knee to meet the little girl rushing into your arms.
"Hi, amorcito-"
Isabel ran right past you. "Where is Cindy? I missed her so, so, so much!!"
Cindy was the grey stray cat you had found roaming the streets and brought home a little over a month ago. She was, naturally, Isabel's favourite family member.
"Yep," you said to yourself, dusting off your knee as you stood back up. "Off you go to find the cat you love so very much."
Isabel didn't even hear you; she was already running upstairs.
Alexia, meanwhile, was leaning against the gate, looking at you with an irritating smile.
"Isn't Isabel dropped off already?" You asked, faking confusion.
Alexia tilted her head, the smile fading. "... Yeah?"
"So why are you still on my property?"
You made a point to emphasise my because you and Alexia had spent weeks fighting over the house. Alexia had bought it even after you told her you could pay for it. I mean, sure, you would have had to sell one of your kidneys, but that was still honest and dignified work, wasn't it?
Alexia had eventually lost her patience with you and asked her lawyer to write a document in Times New Roman font 25 stating that the house was yours, and that if Alexia dropped dead, it would still be yours, no matter that she paid for it.
Alexia rolled her eyes. "I wanted to let you know I mastered a new ability."
"Oh," you said. "I bet it wasn't learning how to shut the hell up."
Alexia deadpanned. "You're a ray of sunshine."
You smiled sweetly. "Awn!! Thank you."
"With lots of UV rays," she added. "Carcinogenic."
"Did this new ability of yours come with knowing how to use big words?"
"No," she said, resting her arms on the gate. "If you really want to know, I can now kiss Isabe's scrapes better."
You smiled. "Wow. Can I send her to you next time she gets a stomach bug?"
"Always," she said. "You can also call me if you ever feel sick."
"I would rather die." You smiled.
"So, so lovely you are…" she murmured. "Anyway. She already had lunch, ate it all without a fuss."
You squinted at her suspiciously. "I might actually start suspecting you're good at this."
Alexia paused, keys in her hands as she walked over to her car. "I have a good example to follow."
Before you could respond with a sarcastic comeback to mask the sudden blush brought by the quiet compliment, she opened the door and started the engine, leaving with a short wave through the window.
The relapse.
You knew it was a terrible, terrible idea the moment the words left your mouth. You knew that you would regret it deeply. Isabel was finally fast asleep upstairs in her room. It was your weekend with her, so Alexia had just dropped her off.
You were well aware Alexia and Olga had broken up months ago; Isabel had told you, and Alexia confirmed it herself. You also knew that the sharp flirtation between you and Ale had been building for weeks and weeks, though you had tried to convince yourself that was just how Alexia was now. Flirty and charismatic.
As soon as Alexia was ready to leave, you offered her a cup of tea, saying it was to discuss Isabel's after-school activities. Yes, it was eleven o'clock at night. No, it could not wait.
You absolutely hated Alexia for accepting such a dangerous and reckless invitation. She should have been smarter than you; she should have some discernment, right?
You hated her through it all. Hated for how gently she accepted the tea before setting it down on the coffee table. Hated how gently she sat down on the sofa beside you. You hated the careful way she rested her palm against your thigh. But most of all, you heard that she gave you so many opportunities to stop this, and you hadn't taken a single one.
Now you were sitting in her lap, straddling her waist as her hands rested at your lower back.
"We can't–" you whimpered hypocritically, right into her mouth, but your hands were already tangled into her light brown hair, pulling her closer. Needing her closer.
Her lips were still as soft as you remembered, but oh fuck, she felt so, so much more fitter now, so firm beneath your touch. She tasted like camomile, the tea you had both been drinking. She was holding you as though she didn't want to let go, like she was starving, like she also needed you just as close.
"You feel so good," Alexia whispered, her mouth coming down the side of your neck. "You have no fucking idea how much I missed you."
You shook your head, but tilted your chin to give her more access. "Y-You are just in a dry spell because you broke up with Olga-"
Before you could finish, Alexia's teeth sang deliciously into the sensitive skin of your neck. You let out a whine. Fuck, it hurt, but it also made your toes curl and your cunt wet.
"Don't say that," Alexia practically growled against your skin, her grip tightened. "You aren't a sneaky link. I-I missed you, sí? So fucking much."
Clearly, neither of you were thinking straight anymore. All those years apart, all that resentment and aching, it was as though it were all burning away, leaving only this hunger.
Alexia wasn't so gentle anymore.
Her fingers hooked into the hem of your sleeping shirt and she yanked it over your head impatiently. Her breath was caught as her eyes fell over your figure. For a moment, she simply stared, looking almost drunk on desire.
You suddenly felt a rush of self-consciousness hit you.
Alexia cupped your breasts, and you winced, looking away. The Catalann narrowed her eyes. "Qué? What happened?" She murmured, her thumb resting on the curve of your breast. She looked thoroughly hypnotised by the sight of you.
"Well, they are… saggy," you muttered, feeling your cheek blush. "Sorry. My breasts… well, they changed after having Isabel. And I have some deep stretch marks now too, and my stomach is-"
Alexia didn't let you finish. She looked almost irritated that you could possibly think she would care about any of that. She rolled her eyes and pressed your back against the sofa until she was hovering over you now; her frame felt intimidating.
"You still talk too much," she said. "Be quiet"
And oh… quiet you were.
Alexia's mouth was still as divine as it was years ago. Her tongue met yours with greed you hadn't felt in ages, while her big hands roamed down your chest, tracing every stretch mark along your stomach, making a point that she did. not. cared. Not even a little.
Then her mouth travelled down your jaw, dropping messy and wet kisses along your throat and collarbone before she buried her face in your chest. Her tongue flickered over your skin, teasing every single one of your cells before she took one nipple into the humid of her mouth, pulling gently at the nub and sucking it firmly.
You gasped quickly, covering your mouth with one hand as you tried to keep your sounds quiet enough so as not to wake Isabel. Your hips seemed to have a life of their own; they were arching up off the sofa in an attempt to press harder into her.
Alexia groaned against your breast, one of her hands slowly sliding down between your legs. "Is it okay?" she asked, breathless.
You nodded like a madwoman. It's been so long, way too fucking long. "Yes, please."
Alexia smirked and palmed you through your underwear. Of course she was smug the moment she realised how soaked you were.
"Glad to see something never changes," she murmured, her lips brushing your ear. "You still get wet so easily for me."
"Stop being a little shit, Alexia," You growled under your breath, grinding your hips against her hand.
"Oh, and that mouth is still very smart, huh?" Alexia teased, her hand beginning to rub circles over your clit. "Let's see just how smart it stays."
With one motion, Alexia pulled down your trousers and underwear, and unceremoniously slid one finger deep into you. A moan escaped you, and Alexia shut you down with a kiss.
"You be quiet," She said darkly, watching as your body welcomed her easily. "Don't wake our daughter. She has school in the morning; she needs a good night of sleep, sí?"
You rolled your eyes as she added another finger curling then inside of you perfectly. "S-stop talking about her. Just stop talking. You annoy the shit out of me even when we're having sex."
Alexia stopped what she was doing, withdrawing her fingers from you. You whined and pouted, only for her to tap your mouth with those same slick fingers. Of course, you welcomed them into the wet heat of your mouth, but you so desperately wanted to ignore the unbearably proud look on Alexia's face as you wrapped your tongue around them.
"Need to keep this occupied?" She asked, and then she pushed her fingers a little deeper into your mouth until your gag reflex kicked in. She winced, pouting in regret as she gently took her fingers away, brushing your throat softly. "Sorry, I was a bit too rough."
Your throat was still tight and burning, but the tenderness of her voice softened you completely. There were no more defences left for Alexia to break through. Your hand reached up, tangling itself into the back of her neck, and you pulled Alexia down, kissing her sweetly.
Alexia didn't have you take control, but this time there was no arrogance in her hold, no teasing. She slid her hands under your thighs and lifted your hips, spreading you up, opening you for her as she settled back on her knee and looked down at you.
She leaned down and kissed your naval before brushing her lips over your core. She was driving you absolutely insane. You made the smart decision of keeping a hand over your mouth.
"Keep looking at me, sí?" Alexia whispered, her eyes locked into yours as her tongue slid up over your clit.
You bit into your palm at the intensity of the pleasure. Alexia ate you out relentlessly, like she wanted to make up for all the lost time. Every movement of her tongue made your eyes roll.
Embarrassingly, it didn't take long for your body to let go. You bucked your hips against her face, trembling as an orgasm washed all over you. Alexia licked you clean, mapping your cunt with her tongue as you finally went limp. She licked you clean and kissed the inside of your thighs before crawling back up your body, her face flushed and wet.
As if you weren't exes who were merely co-parenting, Alexia pulled your sweaty body against her chest. Her lips pressed soft kisses all over your jaw.
"You sure act like you are still mine," she whispered.
Alexia was a smug little shit. But she was right, not that you were going to admit that anytime soon.
Just sex. That was all it was.
