“That is a rather…unfortunate coincidence,” Diamond replied with a small chuckle escaping, finding a slight bit of humor in the face of the other woman’s plight. “Although with a name mesh like that, I would almost say its meant to be - fated, even - don’t you think?” she teased.

“I think the worst thing that’d happen is that you’d have people hitting you up for money thinking you’re some kind of heiress or something. If I heard it out of context, I probably wouldn’t think twice. I’ll tell ya what is stupid though – I went to school with a girl and her name is Betsy, right? So she goes and marries a guy whose last name is Ross. So now she’s Betsy Ross. Like, come on. You had one job.” She takes a drink of her own. “So, wedding planning, huh? How’s that going for you?”

“The heiress angle’s kinda good” she had to admit. Maybe she’d use that at some point, see where that’d take her. “Better than being Betsy Ross, that sounds very... laborious.” At least her name was going to be ridiculous in spite of her good efforts. And if she was being completely honest, it was far more likely that she’d end up just taking his name... well, at least that had been the case until the heiress plan had entered the picture. “Not too bad, thanks for asking.” Her gratitude was genuine. Usually people were dying for her not to talk about it. “Bit of a time crunch but I’ll get it all done, don’t you worry. Jer might even help out one of these days.” That was also very much up in the air, but at least she was trying to get him invested in picking out some things here and there. “The position as flower girl's still open, just sayin’.”

“Just sold it today, baby doll,” Jeremy told her, closing the refrigerator door too loudly and twisting the cap off a lager bare-handed, which was then tossed accurately into the nearby trash. “One of those nice boys in a rainbow get-up, happy to pay a little too much.” He laughed, and it echoed around the sparklingly-clean kitchen. “Well, you know how it goes. Easiest time I ever had moving stock since we came. Tellin’ you, Barb, we oughta stick around for a while. I know you ain’t like that nextdoor girl but it’s pretty nice other’n that, don’t you think?”

“Well, thank goodness for that. Felt so inappropriate for this climate, anyway. Poor thing.” It wasn’t unusual for them to have weird, ugly things around the house and she kept almost getting used to it... but then something extra awful came along and brought her back to square one on that front. The reindeer skull would not be missed, that was for damn sure. “It’s not bad” she agreed, not quite sounding enthusiastic although she did enjoy the place for the most part. “They’re crazy people but not like we didn’t have plenty of them around at the old place. At least business is better out here.” And it was critically important, especially with their wedding day slowly inching closer, that he had a career for her to support. “By the way, I think accidentally invited them over on Thursday, the neighbors. Don’t know why, it just kinda slipped out... so now I gotta figure out an excuse. You got anything?”

          “well, i mean…” aaron starts speaking before deciding to pause long enough to suck back a sip from the straw of his drink. “do you think that automatically entitles you to some of your new namesake’s toy fortune? if not, you could see if they’ll at least budge on giving you a free swing set.”

"Well that’s an intriguing thought” she said as she leaned forward a little, her interest very much piqued by the suggestion. She was always down for the chance to score some free stuff. “Our kids would be set for life, wouldn’t they?” Definitely worth considering. At that point it would be a full-on investment in her future. “Tell you what. If you help me write a letter to them, I’ll let you have dibs on one of the swings.”

“Fisher price? Like the toys?” he asks, then laughs. “Shit. That does sound dumb as hell. Maybe you can do that thing couples do where they combine their last names. Mad corny and terrible, but may be the best option in this case.”

“You mean like...” It took her a minute to actually shove their names together because they really didn’t go. “Prischer? Or... Fischgan. Yeah I’m not sure that solves my problem.”

Ade tilted his head for a moment as Barbara spoke, his brows knitting together thoughtfully. “You know, there is a very easy solution to this,” he began, placing his drink down on the table and leaning back in his chair a little more. “Don’t take his name. Problem solved.”

“That’s certainly a solution, I guess.” Barbara had honestly not given that possibility any real consideration, and she was not about to. She had the entire idea of being married romanticized to the point that if she was still in school, she would’ve scribbled Barbara Fischer across all of her notebooks in her best cursive. “I think being a Fischer Price is better than trying to explain to my mother why I’m not gonna be one.”

Holland nearly choked. She lifted her hand to her mouth and forced her drink down, holding back a laugh until she was clear to use it. “I’m sorry,” she said, trying to excuse her reaction. “That’s – that’s – yeah. That’s pretty adorable,” Holland teased. She went in for another sip, hoping that Barbara gave her enough time to finish it this round. “Consider yourself lucky. I have a friend, her last name is Shaft. Got married, and I kid you not, her husband’s last name was Hickey. The good old Shaft-Hickey clan,” she said, shaking her head.

Barbara looked positively horrified when her name troubles were more than one-upped. If she had been drinking, she would have spit it out too but thankfully she had more foresight than Holland at least in that regard. “That’s horrible”  she said with a face that was still stuck on the highly disapproving grimace, which you had to admit was more than called for. “Did they have a church wedding? Seems wrong to do that in the house of the Lord, y’know?”

Axel took a drag of a cigarette and let out a small snort of laughter at her name. “ You sound like a toy.” He chuckled. “ Although a girl at my old job was called Clare Friday and she was marrying Steve Night  so she was going to be Clare Friday-night.” He smirked. “I think yours sounds more innocent than that.”

“For sure better than that” she agreed, already picturing the girl in question in a not very flattering light that she may or may not have actually deserved. She couldn’t help it. “I see her dilemma. Clare Night is also kind of... I don’t know. Weird? I don’t want to imagine the weather puns she would have to listen to every day of her life. Poor thing.”

honey’s hands cradled her own cup of coffee between her palms , inviting in the warmth despite high june temperatures outside . “ – fischer-price ?? “ she repeated , as if she must have heard the name wrong , “ careful you don’t get a lawsuit on your hands . i had a client named poppy fields once which i thought was incredible , and siblings called mercedes and benz . i wish i was kidding with that one . “ 

The lawsuit comment was clearly a joke, but it still made her think if that was possible. “Maybe I should consult an attorney, now that you mention it.” The other ridiculous names made her laugh and cringe simultaneously, it was almost too ridiculous to believe. “Poppy Fields sounds cute at least but Mercedes and Benz? I hope those kids got a sponsorship or something to ease the pain a little bit. Could they not at least have picked a different car band? Mercedes and... Jeep?“

“Better finish off the rest of your cake today, darlin’, or I’ll have to go drop it off for the neighbors” she teasingly threatened. They hadn’t lived in Silver Lake for very long but they had already seen enough to know what the people next door were like. They didn’t really deserve the cake she’d spent hours perfecting but she wasn’t actually going to give it to them anyway. “Did you get rid of that awful reindeer head yet? I don’t know who’s gonna buy it but wouldn’t hurt if they hurried up a little.”

It didn’t matter how many times it happened. Seeing one of his movie posters up on a billboard always made Rex’s heart flutter. There was pride in his work, seeing the poster was the end of all the hard slog and the trips away. He gazed at it and then smiled at the person nearby. “ Would you see that at the movies? or Just wait for it on Netflix?” He asked looking briefly at them before looking back up at the poster. 

“I don’t have Netflix,” she replied. That wasn’t really what he had asked, but there was nothing to do about that. “But maybe if it came on TV.” She was definitely one of the last people on the block to still have cable, and it was an odd source of pride although even she would agree that it was both overpriced and mostly full of crap. “I heard that guy is only 5′2″ in real life.”
