people who don’t watch horror movies are SO confident that they know everything there is to know about the genre. like it’s okay to not know things. it’s okay if you don’t like friday the 13th or whatever. i promise you don’t need to make an ass out of yourself on the internet about it
horror is an incredibly diverse genre, because there is potential horror in everything. it’s in nature, it’s in architecture and technology, it’s in human relationships, it’s in folklore, the past, the future, the mundane. there are horror movies from all over the world. it is straight up anti-intellectual to pretend that the handful of B slashers you’ve vaguely heard about comprise the totality of what horror has to offer. If you’re just not interested in horror, or if you dislike certain subgenres of horror, then that’s fine, you’re not obligated to like anything at all. but smugly announcing that you don’t like horror because you dislike a handful of VERY specific non-universal tropes is just as stupid as saying that you hate comedy because you don’t like adam sandler movies.
this is what I mean by anti-intellectualism btw

So that's why they weren't hiring many concept artists recently :') I was really looking into it bc I would love to work with them. Not anymore I guess. Such disappoinment
They felt like one of the few companies that still value its workers and the human input into the game creation. It seems that the greed catches up with everyone at some point. Larian were kinda giving me hope that not all is lost in this industry yet
Actually, fuck you
(screenshot from CEO's reply)
Why the slop machine that destroys our planet is considered a valuable "help". Sounds like the workers are forced to use it bc I can't imagine a competent concept artist actually using AI in production. Using it for ref boards, creative briefs and variation generating makes it all a slop
And they even have the audacity to complain about the backlash? Wow I'm sorry we artists still want to make a living. Did you know that creative brief creation and reference gathering is also a part of work that artists do?
Man, this is very disappointing. I've had a read into these three articles from IGN, Gamespot, and a different Gamespot article from earlier this year to get a read on the situation and while it's nice I guess that they're still painting, I do want to highlight this little bit, a tweet by Michael Douse, director of publishing at Larian:
(Here is the link to the tweet)
So. I am a concept artist. I have used AI (Midjourney and Stable Diffusion) for image generation at my previous job in marketing. And I have spent a lot of hours searching for references, and sometimes the hours spent have been too many (as in, I later didn't have time to develop my ideas as well as I wanted). And so I saw this tweet and now I have several (unpolished) thoughts and I'm gonna write them down here:
AI is not a good reference tool: it is a) prone to be wrong, and this is especially condemning for design, where the devil is often in the details, b) will bring you the statistically most likely outcome, which tends to be boring, c) narrows down the scope of possible solutions to only what is being generated (when you search, you sift through much more material that you have to either accept or reject; this widens your scope of visual imput even if you end up rejecting half of it. Concept art is a process defined so strongly by what is not chosen), d) you start the design process with the idea instead of letting a visual surprise and inspire you (AI will only spit out what you ask for. No suddenly finding something totally unrelated and going "hang on, this is cool!")
Generating references is not more time-saving than searching the internet or looking through a book: especially if you know what you are looking for. There are tons of databases, museum collections, and "An Overview on Fashion"-type books where you will find what you need much quicker than by coming up with, typing, and refining a prompt, and then checking that you got something actually useful. If one really wanted to make reference gathering easier, the answer to that would be a huge, well-structured, well-tagged database of images, not a tool to generate images
Using AI "just for reference" does not address the problem with AI: which is the environmental consequences huge datacenters are having, the soaring prices of computer art, and the fact that AI has been trained without the knowledge, consent or participation of those who have created a large part of the training material
Again, very disappointing situation. But also: reference gathering? It's just weird at this point
My wish is granted... and now everything I love is lost...
2hrs speedpaint prints ✦ more art, wips, sketches, speedpaints on patreon
Thank you all so much for such kind response to this piece. Recently I don't have enough time to paint complex pieces that would take 8+hrs as usual. And probably won't have time for a while. So painting something more impressionistic that takes a couple of hours seems like a most optimal solution with my personal paintings at this moment. Perfectionism in me is seething, but I'm not listening. I feel like I can finally convey a story or a feeling without spending a million of hours on polishing details

hating is fun but sometimes you see someone only ever be a hater and never a lover and it's like. ok well do you like anything at all or do you only see the world in shades of bad to worse
