Heeeeey handsome, word on the street is you're taking on Bakuras like they're going out of fashion and this is Fight Club.

The one who tried to kill you was lurking around here, as well as another Bakura I hadn’t met. Both have claimed to be your friends, but also gods who are using you like a pawn.

“I can tell.” A mischievous grin. “I offered to help him out. For some reason he declined.” He shook his head. “I don’t know how you want me to act around these people, but when they keep talking like our enemies, it’s hard to imagine you want me to stay friendly.”

“If they say they’re my friends it’s best to avoid open conflict but, hey, don’t take shit from anyone on my account. I don’t want you killing people willy nilly but you don’t have to sit quiet and take an insult. Thief and Godling are weirdoes but they are my friends. They wouldn’t hurt me without a reason.”

“Sounds like a good compromise,” he said after a moment of thought. “I haven’t attacked anyone, of course. Though I wouldn’t put it past either of them to attack me. If they’re really your friends, why are they so…” He struggled to come up with an appropriate adjective to describe acting like Bakura.

“Of course,” he concurred. Yami was protective but he wasn’t stupid. He wasn’t going to run into all out combat without some info if he could help it. Bamf trusted that much and he was glad he could. He knew some people far more trigger happy. “So….?” He filled in the blanks. “Gotta have all sorts of friends. I don’t know what it is exactly that I love about them but they’re…. they’re honest? They’re not kind just to be kind. Takes a bit to earn their trust but when you have it they keep an eye out for you.”

“If they’re so honest, that’s troublesome, partner,” he said darkly. “Both of them were acting like they were planning to have you killed, or something, and flaunting it in my face.”

"They won’t kill me and I mean that in the sense that, even if they’re planning it, they won’t succeed. Come on, how many psychos did we put in their place? They’re my friends but, if they betray me, I’ll defend my life.”

And it’s that strength that lets you see something worthwhile even in people who’ve hurt you. I just don’t want to see you fighting if you don’t have to. That’s what I’m here for, to help you.”

“I’ve got to fight these days. It’s the only way to stay alive and to work towards the future. We can fight together now. I know you want to protect me but that might mean riding with me rather than taking over for me now. Is that okay?”

“Of course.” His voice was deep. “Maybe that’s the reason I was given a separate body after all.”

“Whyever you were given a separate body I’m glad.” He grinned. “Now…where are we going to have you stay?” He pawed at the back of his neck. “I mean… Lord, there’s the HQ but that’s particularly Bakura infested, there’s my parents place but lordy that’s a whole other problem, there’s the Game Shop but my great-grandfather… “

“The mansion is–” Yami looked sheepish. “I haven’t really been awake all this time, but whenever I woke up, it was in a closet in there. I don’t think anyone found me.” He perked up at the mention of his former workplace. “The Game Shop? Is your grandfather not there anymore?”

"Oh Grandpa’s back alright but he’s an asshole,” Bamf grumbled. “It’s a long story, again, you must be getting sick of hearing that... point is we don’t exactly get on great. That said I bet he’d love your help round the store again and your company. It might be the safest place for you. I don’t know, what do you think? What would you like?”

*Waddles over, slumps down next to on couch*.... *slumps onto, because apparently the first option wasn't annoying enough*

Breakfast was served, long done and over with, little children retired to their bedrooms to commence the normal morning procedures. It was not an easy feat, rousing themselves from the overwhelming influence of sleep, refusing to release them prematurely no matter their attempts. The King submitted himself to wandering for coffee, returning shortly to his office to give his Love more time to rest in without interruption. Few mornings were ever granted to them they could see through to their completion. More often than not, they were pulled from the depths by some event outside their range of control. It was nice to wander lazily according to their own schedule.

It was why, with coffee in hand, the king decided….

Why yes, it seemed a glorious time to settle for a nap!

Settle he did for a short while, coffee on the floor, off set from where he could comfortably reach it if only to protect the carpet from the flailing of limbs near enough to knock it over. He did not suffer under the strain of many dreams, but there was no telling what fright might pull him instantly to attention.

He folded his hands along his stomach, closed his eyes, feeling the couch shift with the introduction of a body not offered before, and the weight of one plopping over to prop themselves against him. He cracked open an eye, just a moment, unfurling one hand to secure the boy in place, nails lightly scratching down the pale length of his arm. They just lay, in peace and quiet, in the comfort of one anothers company in the safety of their family home.

Was there any other way to be?

“It took many lifetimes for me to find your mother. And even when we did make an acquaintance, it was many more before I understood what it meant to love.” Their path to one another had not been easy, far from the lucky perspective many deemed their connection. It took work and dedication and time, agonizingly slow in its passage directly by. They were not free of the torment of life, what challenges it could present when things finally seemed to have settled for good.

“I have spent—” He inclined his head, not budging from the reclined position he was in, a hand resting against the crook of his sons back. He tried to attempt to imagine the right words to say, how to describe his life in so many terms, when none truly existed to do it justice.

“—a majority of my conscious existence alone, aimlessly wandering without anchor, without anything. You are not restrained by the mystery of what you are, where you eventually need to be. You know… and thus, your advantage will guide you. It won’t always be easy, son. Those fears you describe are legitimate and will happen.” He would not soothe his doubts with lies. There would be many friends he came into contact with who would never see the future he forged. “Time is your gift, as much as it is your enemy. You must be patient. And know, there will be there for you someone who will stand by your side for as long as they are able.” It must be enough.

The King, he understood the fears his son expressed, but there was little he could do to help him find the strength he held slipping away.

“You do the right thing being as truthful as you can. You cannot make the decision for him.” He had to come to his own conclusion, how he would translate the information given, what it would mean for his future. “He is caught in the awful rotation of his common story. It will not be easy for him to hear he is not the one, that he had somehow strayed from what partner belongs to him, if any. He may even be a victim of the unbalanced world. Lend your support in what way you are able. When the truth of his existence comes out, he may need you there.”

Bamf nodded along softly, listening or trying to over the noise swirling in his head. He slumped his head down then, into the flat expanse of his father’s clavicle. “I.... Yeah, I have that advantage I guess. I just have to make use of it. I come in contact with all sorts of mythic beasts. Surely one of them is single and worthy.” Worthy of time and effort and love. He just wanted someone of his own to talk to in the middle of the night. Someone who would hold him and not feel like a sapling wrapped round an iron casket. He didn’t want to be encased by someone so much weaker than him that....

He tried not to think about it all. He had his answer, his hope, he needed to pick it up and run with it.

“I’ll be there for him. I owe him my support. I was never intended to be his partner but.... he thinks of me that way and I want to think of him that way. Fate didn’t bring us together and, in a way, that’s a good thing?”

Bamf opened his eyes, glancing up to the one lone iris glancing down at him and nestled down a little further. He didn’t see the point in moving when they were comfortable for once. There was so much to do after all but.... yeah he liked his nap here better than ruing how expensive colleges offering majors in fashion design were or cringing dumbly at Law textbooks or considering how the hell to introduce Yami to Guy. He shuddered at the thought. Gods life would be a little easier if he could get advice from Uncle Yami but... Well his father was in no way a poor substitute. Bamf happily sought his advice but Uncle Yami knew his grades and likes and might’ve offered a different perspective.

“I hope not,” he murmured. “I worry sometimes I’m going to outlive all the people I care about. I find that a lot scarier than dying young and passionate. What if I find someone, someone human and perfect, but I have to watch them die old and wrinkled and...” he shook his head. He pondered these things sometimes. “You have Mum. You guys got so lucky. Statistically my chances can’t be great.” Forty years was only a ‘long term’ relationship if you intended to die at ninety.

“He did,” Bamf murmured, “I’ve started explaining the basics to him but there’s a lot he doesn’t know. I’m sure you can imagine how much there is to explain and how crazy it all sounds even in my head.... He wants to help me, protect me even but I worry... what if he doesn’t like who I am now? What if he doesn’t understand or like what he’s getting into? What if I can’t help him find his memories like I promised? Mainly I worry a lot.”

Bamf was carefree in some ways, happy-go-lucky, but he let his father see him scared. He was one of the only people who didn’t judge.

Bamf lay there awhile, just resting his eyes, and tried not to think about Lilith and Guy and Yami and all the other things swirling about his head. He had his own problems, yes, but his problems were also kind enough to spare a moment worrying about his mother’s problems before circling back round to let him nap however briefly.

“Hey,” he murmured, eyes still closed and his body still comfortably tucked beside the other’s. “What do you think the chances are of me really finding someone to spend my long life with? Realistically.”

He sighed, burying his face briefly in a shoulder only reemerging to add; “the Yami residing in my puzzle came back.” Now was as good a time as any to say it and he could use some guidance.

I’m not sure trust could have been a concept that could be applied to Zorc and I before now. It’s- *hesitates, but he wanted Bamf to understand. At least Bamf, he was a creative enough human to understand* As his servant it was not my place to have any expectations about his behaviour. And it would certainly not be my place to object to any of his actions. I am proud of the lengths I was able to go to show to myself I can be strong for my people, but it was a failure on my part. A public acknowledgement of my failure. Though no one else seems to understand. Do you?

You’re right now though. Now that I’m independent I should think that way and he is not trustworthy. We can not be allies. *glances up and he smiles a little* That is the main thing that has happened to me. It’s been eventful.

*pauses, considers* I can’t claim to understand, only you can do that, but I feel a certain empathy for you and the lengths you felt you needed to go to to live up to your duty.

*smiles softly* always an eventful life, and you’re still safe with us which I am glad for.

*purses his lips and nods, not quite satisfied but willing to accept what he was given* Hmm. Maybe you’re right. I suppose the whole thing is unimportant now, it’s behind me and I’m moving on.

How long do you think you’ll be around. Not your family, you personally. I think you ought to stay close for two weeks at the least. You’ll be needed.

*He didn’t want to leap to promising he understood. He wouldn’t lie like that. But he meant what he said; he cared* if it feels important to you then it’s important, moving on from it or not.

Well I have promised you a week without adventures but I can’t make long term promises about when I’ll be called off again. I can’t see the future sadly, not without skipping ahead and that’s frowned upon where I come from.
