TW: implied stalking, body horror, isolation, imposter, almost smut, bone breaking, violence
Youāre not sure if your boyfriend is your boyfriend anymore. And you think he knows you know it. You watched his back as he cooked dinner in the kitchen, everything inside you screaming something is wrong, the hairs on the back of your neck standing up. He just feltā¦wrong now. You could only describe it as your stomach knotting up funny after eating bad food.
Dakota was supposed to be out on a week long camping trip with a few of his buddies. But he came back on the third day, acting off. He looked normal, he talked normal, but something was different with him. Something was just wrong either way, maybe it was his eyes, or the way he smiled, but something was off. You asked multiply times if he was okay, he just laughed and asked if you were okay.
āHoney?ā Dakota asked, staring at you from across the table, snapping you out of your thoughts.
āYeah?ā You asked, blinking back into reality. Dakota smiled wider once your attention was back on him, sliding your portion of dinner over.
āJust making sure you were on earth, looked a little out of it.ā Dakota said, beginning to eat.
āJust thinking.ā You offer while getting up to get drinks. āWhat do you want to drink?ā You called over your shoulder, opening to grab yourself a water.
āJust a water would be good.ā Dakota said, making your hand pause.
āYou donāt want beer?ā You question, turning to him.
āNah, I need to get a handle on that.ā He said, meeting your gaze with a look that said ādonāt question itā.
āOkay.ā You say slowly, grabbing a second water and handing him one before sitting back down. Dakota asked how your day was, and you both got to talking while eating dinner. Afterwards you helped clean up and went to have some space on the porch.
You had about an hour of daylight left, accounting the trees around your house. You cuddled up on one of the chairs and began reading, listening to the daytime symphony of songs birds fade into tree frogs and crickets. The air smelt like wet earth and pine. Soon it became too dark for you to read, so you marked your page and headed back inside. It was quiet when you came back inside, almost eerily quiet. You kicked off your slip onās, looking into the kitchen then living room.
āDakota?ā You called, feeling nervous when you didnāt get a reply. āKota?ā You called again, walking to the back of the house. You end up finding him just standing in your shared bedroom, in the dark. āBabe..?ā You asked quietly, flicking on the light. Dakota turned to face you, smiling.
āHey.ā He said, clearing his throat. You both stared at each other, the air still.
āWhy were you standing in the dark?ā You asked, keeping him in your peripheral as you walked to your bedside table.
āCame in here to grab something, forgot what I needed when I actually got in here.ā Dakota shrugged.
āIn the dark?ā You question, raising a brow at him.
āI was quick grabbing something, didnāt think I needed the lights on.ā Dakota said. It was simple, it made sense. So you let it go.
Smiling, you said. āGotcha, a bit creepy though.ā Grabbing some pajamas. āIām gonna take a shower and head to bed.ā You turned on your heel, walking to the shared bathroom. Dakota stalked after you, watching you prepare your shower from the doorway. āCan you start some laundry?ā You asked, undressing and getting into the shower.
āSure babe.ā Dakota spoke causally, grabbing the hamper and leaving you alone. You felt a bit more relaxed when he left, the hot water melting into your tense muscles.
Dakota moved down the hall quietly, stopping in the laundry room and starting the tedious task of laundry. Though he paused when he came across your underwear, his head growing fuzzy as your scent emitted from the cloth. He brought the cloth to his face, a deep growl vibrating the air as he sniffed. His form waned a bit, his face melting into a sunken mass, eyes hollowing out a bit. His claws raked across the metal of the washer, the screeching of nails to metal sending an ear piercing shriek through the air. It fixed its posture, his face tightening back up to be Dakota, his claws disappearing.
Dakota took a deep breath, tossing your panties into the wash and starting it. He hummed quietly as he went back to the bedroom, his thoughts consumed by you. He knew you were catching onto him, but itās not like you could do anything anymore. The real Dakota is gone, rotting in some desolate hole in the earth. He is here now, and he will make sure you love him. You will, you have too. He knows everything about you after all, your favorite foods, hobbies, colors, how you like to be touched. Heās watched, heās seen every part of you. You will be his, one way or another.
You were brushing your teeth when you came back out, hair wet and dressed for bed. You sat on your side, scrolling through your phone, checking a few of your socials. Dakota came back in, closing the bedroom door. He changed when you went back to the bathroom to spit, waiting for you in bed when you returned. You smiled at him, sliding into the sheets beside him. He smiled at you, gently cupping your face in his hand, pulling you into a gentle kiss.
The soft glow of the bedside lamp made his features look sharper, but soft all at once. Slowly the gentle kisses got rougher, his hand sliding to hold the back of your head. You hummed quietly into the kiss, leaning into him. Dakota hooked his arm around you, pulling you into his lap. He was hard already, his erection pressed angrily against his pants.
You smiled against the kiss, lifting your hips so you both could free yourselves. Dakota got to work quickly, pulling his length out and giving it a few practice strokes. You bit your lip, lowering yourself just out of reach. You looked at him in the eyes, and saw something different. The vibrant green you were used to were replaced by a deep black, it almost looked like two glass marbles. Your brows furrowed, your body tensing up.
āYouāre not kotaā¦ā you mumbled, the hair on your neck standing. It laughed, watching you pull off and away from it. The mocking smile turned into a sour scowl at your retreat. It pulled its pants back up, its erection gone.
āI can be him. I can be better than him.ā It said, standing up. The face of your Dakota was shifting grotesquely, his eyes becoming this hollow void, the skin sagging and pulling at odd angles. You shook your head, back away.
āNo. No I want my Dakota back.ā You say quickly, watching the imposters face twist a bit in both sorrow and anger.
āHeās not coming back.ā It said, itās body growing and bending. Its neck elongated, the bones of his spine rising like little mountains on his shirt. His arms and legs grew, the sharp claws brushing the floor. āIām here. I can be-I am Dakota.ā It said, itās voice a weird mix of Dakota and something deeper. You visibly recoiled from the thing, you face screwing into a look of pure fear and horror. āWhy canāt you love me?ā It asked, its voice waining into that deep warped sound. āI would do anything for youā¦ā It said quietly, walking towards you with arms open.
You back away quickly, fumbling with the doorknob before throwing it open and running down the hall. You let out a cry when it came chasing after you, its heavy body slamming into the wall while it screamed āWHY WONT YOU LOVE ME?!ā
You took a sharp left when it lunged for you, the things letting out an angered screech as it plummeted into the kitchen table. The wood splintered under its weight, making it angrier. You ran to the kitchen, grabbing a knife. Took a few deep breaths as you listened to it move around just beyond the wall.
ā(Name)?ā It called, the warped voice carrying in the still air. Your heart pounded in your ears as he sniffed the air, suddenly going still. āIām sorry baby, didnāt mean to scare you.ā It cooed, appearing in the doorway. Itās tall body bent down, watching you. āCome on honey, put the knife down, we can talk.ā It cooed, its voice suddenly sounding like Dakota. When you kept the knife, it frowned. āDrop it.ā The warped sound deepened, the warning clear.
āW-what did you do to Dakota?ā You asked, backing away.
āWhat do you think?ā It tilted its head, taking a step closer. āHe was quite the fighter. All I had to do was,ā it paused, lunging at you. Itās powerful hands grabbing your armed hand, snapping it cleanly like a stick. Your screamed of pain rang out as you reached away, your forearm bending oddly. You hit a wall, screaming and sobbing. It approached you slowly, cooing quietly to shush you as it knelt its gangly body next to yours. Itās long limbs wrapped around you, despite your protests. It gently scratched your head with itās claws, holding you steady as your sobbed.
āIt will be okay, Iāll take care of you.ā It said soothing, the warped sound making you shiver. āNext time you fightā¦it will be a leg.ā It warned, before soothing you again.
