Hey folks, Gloin here. Tonight is the first night of Hannukah. So I sang the two songs that are traditional to sing on the lighting of the candles. They are Haneirot hallalu āwe sing of these candlesā, and Maoz Tzur or āRock of Ages,ā which is a pretty metal title when you think about it. These tunes are both very old tunes out of medieval Europe. Itās not my best singing job, but I tried. I hope you like it.
i could be doing something productive but whatās a better way to spend the weekend than drawing butts
in honor of this post hitting 2000 notes I added some more butts!
Yeah I really donāt know about this one xD this fandom xD
Itās 3:30 in the morning. There are people around me sleeping. I am dying.
This is what my best friend tags me in. I love you Cin xD
I quite like the idea of Bilbo being just very vexed over being in love with Thorin.Ā
Like, itās just not necessary. Thorin is entirely not necessary with his eyes and his voice and his Valar damned thighs and arms and hands and just argh!
Bilbo was quite happy being a confirmed bachelor. He hadnāt asked for an uninvited house guest who first kept him up half the night with soft humming (Thorinās voice is just notĀ fair) and then gave him very uncomfortable dreams. Very uncomfortable dreams.
(Bilbo hadnāt had that kind of uncomfortable dreams since he was a tween.)
But fine, thatās- he can handle it. Thorin seems to be an arrogant arsehole anyway. Fine. Thatās good. Itās for the best. Indeed.
(Still, ThorināsĀ everything is still very unnecessary and Bilbo would like to make a formal complaint and point out that heād not have fallen off his pony nearly as often if it hadnāt been for Thorinās everything distracting him)
And THEN, Thorin reveals himself to be nice! And sweet, and surprisingly humble. How dare he! Bilbo did definitely not ask for this!
All leading up to the scene on the Carrock.
When Thorin starts in on Bilbo our Hobbit snaps (before Thorin can get to theĀ ānever been so wrong bitā).Ā
Bilbo is entirely fed up. He thinks that he must have imagined Thorin being nice. So he starts reading Thorin the riot act, and has worked up quite the bit of steam before Thorin manages to get a word in edgewise.
And Thorin apologies. And hugs him. And Bilbo is stunned.
Not until theyāre safe at Beorn does the shock really fade, and as he tries to fall asleep (next to Thorin no less) he realises that heās still bloody well livid.Ā
He contemplates waking Thorin up and yelling at him for being such a lovely, attractive person, but before he can do so he has a moment of revelation and ends up almost choking to death on laughter instead.Ā
All at once he realises how silly heās been. Itās not Thorinās fault. None of it. Well, except the times when he has acted like an arse.Ā
So Bilbo is practically vibrating with suppressed giggles, trying not to wake anyone, but Thorin has always been a light sleeper.
āWhat are you doing?ā Thorin asks, his voice managing to be both soft and rough. His eyes are very blue. Very very unfairly blue. But suddenly thatās not upsetting anymore.
And Bilbo, still giggling, just shakes his head.Ā āI have no idea,ā he breathes, and then he closes the small distance between them and kisses Thorin.
Hi itās Gloin, and I sang a song for a dear friend of mine, and now I am uploading it here to share. Thereās some basic baby-level bodhran playing in here, where I demonstrate I know not the actual fuck what I am doing. And I sing an old sea chanty. Itās called āGeneral Taylor.ā

Quite possibly the best video Iāve ever seen
The Best Birth Control In The World Is For MenĀ byĀ Jon Clinkenbeard
If I were going to describe the perfect contraceptive, it would go something like this: no babies, no latex, no daily pill to remember, no hormones to interfere with mood or sex drive, no negative health effects whatsoever, and 100 percent effectiveness. The funny thing is, something like that currently exists.
The procedure calledĀ RISUGĀ in India (reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance) takes about 15 minutes with a doctor, is effective after about three days, and lasts for 10 or more yearsā¦
Oh, and when you do decide you want those babies, it only takes one other injection of water and baking soda to flush out the gel, and within two to three months, youāve got all your healthy sperm again.
The trouble is, most people donāt even know this exists. And if men only need one super-cheap shot every 10 years or more, thatās not something that gets big pharmaceutical companies all fired up, because theyāll make zero money on it (even if it might have the side benefit of, you know,Ā destroying HIV).

I LOVE IT AVIVA YOU ARE AMAZING
Iāve been thinking a lot about the fall of Khazad-dum to Durinās Bane. And honestly Iām very angry with how the Dwarves are blamed for this: that they were greedy and so they got what was coming. Thatās more or less how the narrative on this goes. Iāve seen this thought in analyses Iāve read and itās pretty plain in the books. Look at this quote from Gandalf:
āThe Dwarves tell no tale; but even as mithril was the foundation of their wealth, so also it was their destruction: they delved too greedily and too deep, and disturbed that from which they fled, Durinās Bane.ā (Fellowship of the Ring)
Iām not saying that the mining of the Dwarves didnāt cause the Balrog to reappear (whether the mining woke him up from sleep or made it possible to escape from where he was). But Iām angry at they way itās talked about. No one knows better than the Dwarves the calamity that waking the Balrog was. But instead of talking about how it was a tragic accident, people talk about how it was the greedĀ of Dwarves that caused it and I take serious issue.
First off, how could the Dwarves have known the Balrog was there? Do you think they would have kept mining in that direction if they knew? How were they supposed to know how deep was too deep? It would have been bizarre for them to all of a sudden be like āahh yes, weāve dug deep enough, no more mithril mining for us.ā I donāt think the other races of Middle Earth, especially Elves, would appreciate that (Iāll talk about this a bit later).
So it comes back to greed and the idea that coveting something so much will ultimately lead to your downfall. Itās a popular trope (the trope is literally named Dug Too DeepĀ and Iāll give you one guess at the trope namer) and honestly, itās a tired one. Almost everything bad that has happened to Dwarves has supposedly happened out of their greed, at least according to outside perspectives on the events. A dragon came to Erebor resulting in a huge number of deaths and the subsequent exile of the survivors? Yeah, all because King Thrór was too greedy and coveted riches too much. Thorin and his nephews died in Battle of Five Armies? Definitely because Thorin got too greedy with the gold in the mountain and coveted the Arkenstone too much. A Balrog reappeared and drove the Dwarves of Khazad-dum out? Well, you can see where Iām going. The idea that bad things happen to Dwarves simply because they were greedy is not a unique idea and it is also an antisemitic one.
Another thing that irks me is how sort of high and mighty people of other races get when talking about it. Like I mentioned before, you get the feeling that people donāt really sympathize with the fact that a hell demon just appeared in their home and killed dozens of their people, including their king, and drove the survivors out of a place sacred to their people. Honestly, what the fuck? How can you reduce that level of horrifying tragedy down to āthey were greedy and thatās why this happenedā?Ā
And beyond the seeming total lack of sympathy for the Dwarves, consider the fact that there was probably a huge market for mithril. We know the Elves wanted it:
āMithril! All folk desired it. It could be beaten like copper, and polished like glass; and the Dwarves could make of it a metal, light and yet harder than tempered steel. Its beauty was like to that of common silver, but the beauty of mithril did not tarnish or grow dim. The Elves dearly loved it, and among many uses they made of it ithildin, starmoon, which you saw upon the doors.ā (Fellowship of the Ring)
So of course the Dwarves were mining for more. Lots of people in Middle Earth wanted it. It probably brought in a lot of wealth, and Iām going to argue that prosperous Dwarven colonies increase the prosperity of surrounding settlements. Look at how while Erebor was wealthy, men in Dale were also prosperous based on trade. Even the Elves of Greenwood were probably better off while Erebor was prosperous. But besides that, why would the Dwarves randomly stop mining for mithril when there was such a demand for it? It wouldnāt make sense and I have no idea how that could really be called Dwarven greed. Besides, who is giving these weird retellings about how their greed for mithril caused the Balrog to wake up? Not Dwarves, thatās for sure, and throughout the books other races continuously have poor opinions of the Dwarves and treat them terribly. So Iām extremely skeptical of this idea.
Basically, I seriously mistrust anything an Elf or Man has to say about Dwarves and take it with a huge grain of salt because they have continuously demonstrated an unfounded disdain towards them. How can they blame the fall of Khazad-dum on the Dwarves getting greedy for mithril when they themselves were creating a large demand for mithril? How is it that all they can say about the fall of Khazad-dum is that the Dwarves were greedy? So many Dwarves died. The ones that didnāt lost their home. All Dwarves lost a sacred place. Citing greed as the reason for the Balrog every time the story is told is heartless, misguided, and antisemitic.
āCiting greed as the reason for the Balrog every time the story is told is heartless, misguided, and antisemitic.ā YES. Mind you, this is exactly what I mean when I talk about embedded antisemitism in the text, that gets carried over into fandom, albeit often unwittingly. Tolkien based this trope directly on the āgreedy Jewā stereotype, which comes with its own set of real-world victim blaming. He didnāt quite manage to undo it, and this is where it comes out strongest, and itās so SAD because it is like a punch in the gut, every time. You donāt have to believe me either, because if you read his Letters, Tolkien will tell you himself in his own words.

As a preview for chapter 6 of the podfic of Comes Around Again, here is a version of Tra-la-la-lally (also known in the original text of the Hobbit as The Dragon is Withered), sung by the elves as the company enters Rivendell. I composed this melody and arrangement myself, though the words are the selection scarletjedi uses in CAA.
