I have to ask, why does the Genshin fandom laser-focus on aesthetic/surface-level things about a character or situation that got backlash and end up missing some of the most massive elephants in the room?
Like why Paimon has detractors: people will go in circles about how it mustâve been her English dub voice making her sound ruder, her repeating things for the player to hear, etc. But absolutely nothing about how since debut sheâs spoken exactly like a prejudiced suburban Karen and judged people based on ableist, classist and racist stereotyping.
Or with Godwinâs situation, how people were debating whether he was irresponsible for ditching his mission, or relatable for âlosing something on the way to workâ and that people should stop hating on him. This misses the massive issue, from the start, of a grown man placing more importance on his shame and ego than the well-being of everyone around him, to the point he ditched his public service job and girlfriend and still made things all about himself and his shame when it was finally addressed five years later, and learns jack shit.
Or how people laser focus on the moment of Diluc and Kaeyaâs fight but not on how much pressure Mondstadt had put on Diluc or Kaeyaâs longstanding, pre-adoption generational trauma before that night, or how they were thrown into two opposite circumstances after the fact and how that affects how they navigate the world around them.
Or how people will go âWhy isnât Noelle a Knight yet? Sheâs so strong and chivalrous!â when itâs clear that having traits that look good on paper doesnât make you a fitting candidate for a job if youâve been shown to go overboard despite good intentions, and thatâs the very understandable reason Jean keeps rejecting her applications. That being said, thereâs still an issue with how Jean or other knights wonât communicate that to her so Noelle keeps assuming that itâs her not being good or helpful enough, so while thereâs an issue there itâs NOT the fact that Jean keeps rejecting her despite having a strong resume.
Or how people will do mental gymnastics to try and justify the Travelerâs behavior in Fontaine when acting cold towards Lyney and Lynette for being Fatui is awfully weird right off the heels of watching a literal Harbinger (Wanderer) be capable of change for the good despite his background, and having a friendly interaction shortly prior with one whoâs had a relatively worse criminal record (Childe) than two kids who had been exploited and had very few outside connections (and the Travelerâs cold behavior mightâve made that even worse). And regardless of who you sided with during Furinaâs trial, it does nothing to justify them treating her like the same brat a few weeks later after knowing the truth about her.
Maybe itâs me thinking from a writerâs standpoint, but it feels like people get so focused on theories and big lore plot (TM) that a lot of this kind of stuff gets reduced to the surface level - which is counterproductive because these small things are the very reason theories and charactersâ lore have any ground to stand on to begin with. LikeâŚjust really think about this stuff before jumping to the most stereotypical assumption.
I think responding to the issue of how badly Kaeya gets treated/shafted in content with âGive him more Khaenriâah-related plotlines!â or âmake him royalty!â misses the overarching issue at hand: how Kaeya himself isnât valued or treated as worthy of respect by other characters or the narrative, and regardless of how involved he is in the story or whether the content is in Mondstadt or Khaenriâah. And how much more insidious that is because of his marginalized identity both in and out of the game.
I point out how disrespected Kaeya tends to be when it comes to Mondstadt-related content a lot, and how fucked up it is that entire cast gets treated like the nicest found family (TM) at his expense over the past five years. But thing is, Hoyoverse and the fanbase have not been that different when it came to content about his Khaenriâahn roots either. I talk a lot about how Kaeyaâs feelings or how he might be affected by anything are almost never considered when it comes to anything in Mondstadt, but itâs not like thatâs done for his nation of birth whenever they remember to give him content for it.
A glaring example would be in the Caribert Quest, where Kaeya tells the Traveler and Paimon about his Khaenriâahn heritage. Which as we know by that point, is a key part of his vulnerabilities and got him attacked the last time he tried that with someone, so itâs a pretty big deal. The Traveler remains focused on their precious answers (âKhaenriâahâŚâ/âSpeaking of KhaneriâahâŚhow much do you know about it?â) even though their close friend just confided in them about being a refugee/survivor of an ongoing genocide of his people (and they know this since this takes place after Requiem Echoing in the Depths), and he doesnât even get a âyou alright?â or anything else that would consider his feelings on the matter because thatâs not important to those precious answers and lore. Then when Dainsleif shows up and reveals that an Alberich founded the Abyss Order, theyâre so quick to become suspicious of Kaeya being involved and still have no regard for his well-being after a lot of heavy, personal things about him were dropped, some without his consent??? I donât blame him for leaving as quickly as he could. Iâve talked about how dehumanized Khaenriâah and its people get by all the lore and theory chasing, and this was another way it happened. And this came right after they spent the intro calling him crafty, suspecting him of playing a prank, and scolding him for being irresponsible towards Jean completely unwarrantedâŚreally not helping their case.
Then later on, the Traveler sees a memory that reveals that Chlothar founded the Abyss Order after being desperate enough to find anything, anyone who would be able to save his only family, and essentially had his vulnerabilities taken advantage of byâŚsomeone who we later learn is Dainsleifâs brother. Which makes how quick Dain was to reveal that Kaeyaâs ancestor founded the Abyss Order look hypocritical, and the game does nothing to acknowledge that discrepancyâŚwhen I say Kaeya gets absolutely no respect from the white Khaenriâahn characters and that the colorism towards him doesnât vanish in Khaenriâah content, this is what Iâm talking about. This would actually be something important for the Traveler to tell Kaeya, theyâve been friends for years after allâŚbut they donât do that. Nor do they tell him about another descendant, Caribert, being a hopeful soul who just wanted others to be happy just like Kaeya does. And what makes it so much worse is that Kaeya spent so much of his life believing that he wasnât a good person, and the world constantly sent messages to him about how heâd never escape his familyâs shady pastâŚonly for said family to not have totally evil motives or even absolute autonomy in the matter for the most part. Telling him wouldâve lifted a huge weight off his shoulders, and provided a chance for the Traveler to show how much of a good friend they can be towards him and reciprocate his kindnessâŚnope. Acting âholier than thouâ towards Kaeya is the thing we should be focusing on in Traveler-Kaeya interactions, amirite. How he feels about something so heavy canât possibly be taking a toll on him as long as the Traveler and audience can get their precious lore and answers. /s Doesnât help that they still have moments of suspicion or scolding Kaeya for his morals after this, whichâŚyour friend is literally dealing with the aftermath of a 500-year-long traumatic event with barely any support, youâre in no place to judge him, no amount of that wouldâve been appropriate until maybe after you acknowledge and even apologize for your preconceived notions of him first. He deserves that at the very least.
What about in other content? The other Khaenriâah-adjacent character in his vicinity, AlbedoâŚtheir earliest and most well known âinteractionâ if you can call it that is him drawing everyone else nicely, then drawing Kaeya with only a circle and an eyepatch. Yet another character showing Kaeya that everyone thinks heâs âoffâ or âdifferentâ and will treat him as suchâŚyippee. Even if that wasnât the original intent, when itâs stacked up with all the ways other Mondstadters have treated Kaeya differently from the rest of the crew it looks so much worse than if it had just been Albedo doing it. And the fandom thinks Kaeya deserved it for being a âliarâ. And after that? Albedo continues being snarky towards him with the only times heâs positive beingâŚwhen itâs about something Kaeya can do for him or others. God damn it. And once again, Kaeya is the one who has the standout behavior in this dynamic - while everyone else describes Albedo as an untouchable genius, Kaeya highlights his charm and ability to get along with others in his quote about him. This extends to how considerate he is about getting him a gift as well: rather than something sciency or stereotypical for a researcher, Kaeya remembers how much Klee means to Albedo and gets them a gift with a matching set. Kaeya is consistently humanizing towards Albedo (which also means a lot when you recall how Albedo desires to fit in with and understand humanity), but we do not get to see Albedo reciprocate that with Kaeya.
On top of that, we never get to see how Kaeya feels about Irmin when we find out more about the guy. Irmin being the regent responsible for a lot of Kaeyaâs current pain and trauma - not only for his role in starting the Cataclysm, but also as someone whose family had to pick up the pieces after Irminâs rule collapsed. Not to mention it was that Cataclysm that made Kaeya unable to grow up in his homeland no matter how much he wanted to. Same with Rhinedottir, one of the frontrunners of the Cataclysm whoâs getting much more focus with the Hexenzirkel and Sinners gaining more plot visibility. Or the other Sinners, one of which again, was responsible for his emotionally vulnerable ancestorâs creation of the Abyss Order. Or Capitano, who was not only with an organization that Kaeyaâs directly clashed with in the past, but also performed a lot of heroic deeds without thanks and recognition and has the same style of bladework that he does??? Câmon.
Though itâs also worth noting that if Kaeya meets other Khaenriâahn characters, Iâd like to see their dynamics develop and be fleshed out rather than âweâre from the same country, we instantly get along!â I really hate that one cliche, mainly because Iâve faced it in the form of a microaggression in the west (âYou have to know *insert Chinese or East Asian person* right?? No? I think youâll like each other right away!â) and it essentially treats people from one nation/continent like a monolith or like they all must think the same, whichâŚugh. Look, two people being from the same birth nation might not have to deal with certain cultural barriers while interacting with each other, but it does not mean the interaction will go smoothly or theyâll instantly vibe. People who come from the same countries/cultural backgrounds still have to get to know each other, build trust, and solve conflicts, and yes, that includes all the effort that goes into that stuff. No amount of fewer cultural barriers makes a relationship suddenly not need any of that. And the Khaenriâahns weâve seen all have distinct personalities and backgrounds, particularly Kaeya and Arlecchino - they all would still have to put in the work in their one-on-one interactions. But tbh, thatâs much more interesting that expecting them to instantly get along anyway.
And the thing isâŚof all people who could be involved in the Khaenriâah plotline, Kaeyaâs feelings and perspective should be among the most important and prioritized. He isnât just someone with a vague connection to Khaenriâah who wasnât affected by any of its affairs at all - heâs a direct descendant of one of the surviving families of the Cataclysm. A family with one of the most well-known names (Alberich) both in the past and the present for Khaenriâah. His existence also implies that the curse isnât permanent/has a clause, and whether he already knows or will find out later onâŚthatâs some shit that he would have some massive feelings over. He got hyped up as âour last hopeâ for Archonsâ sake. We can tell all this has taken a toll on him from how it manifests in his secretive, sometimes even off-putting behavior since his very childhoodâŚbut letâs just blame it on him being an anti-hero or suspicious based on a bunch of people pleasersâ standards rather than do the uncomfortable work of acknowledging how fucked up it is that one person had to deal with all that with little to no support, and that anyone in his shoes wouldâve probably had a much worse reaction multiple times over than what weâve seen out of him. Giving Kaeya more Khaenriâah, or even any other nationâs content, would only work out if heâs being valued for more than what he can do, and his feelings are treated with just as much importance as anyone elseâs.
this wonât be structured neatly at all because Iâm writing this very late so Iâm sorry for the lack of proper grammar, but I find your point about jean and kaeyaâs relationship appearing one-sided interesting when I think about it in contrast to how hoyoverse presented jean as a staunch advocate for eula in particular, who is also scrutinized heavily by mondstadt society (albeit for different reasons than kaeya, obviously). Iâve thought about this too.
to me itâs contradictory that jean would not openly advocate for kaeya in the same way she does for eula, considering her defense of eula can easily apply to kaeya, who is her most trusted aide and someone sheâs presumably known for a few years now. I think the lack of reciprocation with kaeya could be a byproduct of the fact that jean is usually not around in scenes where kaeyaâs character is being maligned, but I also think it is because of the way hoyoverse deliberately frames kaeya as an ambivalent character compared to eula, who is intended to be sympathized with immediately as the âtsundereâ archetype who has good intentions but is misunderstood. obviously, their racist double standards are at play, because thereâs no logical reason to throw kaeya under the bus when he is objectively in a similar vein (being judged based on unfair assumptions). and he demonstrably has it worse within teyvatâs hierarchy. but anyway, hoyoâs unwarranted and inappropriate âotheringâ of kaeya relative to his âquintessentially moralâ colleagues is a classic racist trope thatâs exacerbated by his turmoil as a poc in a predominantly white nation. I think his hangout event requiring the caribert questâs completion (where there is an option to express doubt with kaeya after finding out about his origins) was intentional as to give the player a proper chance to form a closer bond with him after learning something shocking about him, but that didnât stop hoyo from carrying on with their regressive, gimmicky treatment of him in later events.
so while I donât find it surprising that these racist double standards are imbued in his writing, I do find this inconsistency with jeanâs character quite lame. I really dislike how harsh the fandom is on her with the whole âsheâs a hysterical kill-joy explosive fire demon who hates children having fun and varka definitely NEVER exploited her labor since she was a teen, you made that up in your head sheâs just Always Been Like Thatâ flanderization they like to harp on about, but the general point that kaeya gets the short end of the stick is worth talking about. jean explicitly denounces the rumors about eulaâs values as nonsensical libel, and eulaâs character stories highlight how she is typically a âvictimâ of other peopleâs âprejudices.â honestly, eulaâs character stories excessively lament about how misunderstood she is in a way that becomes vapid and heavy-handed very quickly, but thatâs besides my point ig. all Iâm trying to say is that it makes no sense how jean isnât written to show up in the same way for kaeya, who she is implied to be friends with separately from work. could this be due to the fact that hoyoverse depicts kaeya as reliable for his services anyway, so they donât think he is ostracized/scrutinized to the same extent as eula? itâs a bullshit reason, but maybeee? still, I canât picture jean staying neutral when his personal character is being ribbed at unfairly. again, sheâs usually not around when this occurs, but hoyo found a way to have her defend eula through textual sources anyway. like, you mean to tell me the same woman that put kaeya on vacation after noticing he finished their backlog of paperwork WOULDNâT have anything to say about the âshifty lazy liarâ allegations that are thrown at him so frequently? knowing her, she would definitely stick up for him. the only reason this writing inconsistency exists is because hoyoverse is racist. I donât actually think this is indicative of a flaw with jeanâs inner character because it straight up doesnât match up with what we know of her. and while jean might struggle with sticking up for herself against authority and social conventions, the same doesnât apply in situations where she looks out for other people. so I do believe her expression of affection and care for kaeya is severely limited by hoyoverseâs insistence on sweeping him under the rug and being too lazy to actually show how he is loved by his friends. contrary to the fandomâs shallow belief that jean is too emotionally constipated to show up for her loved ones, she has, in fact, been shown to be there for others, even to her own detriment. emotional labor is an integral aspect of her situation. so thereâs no reason for kaeya to be an exception.
Another thingâjean has been indoctrinated into her self-sacrificing philosophy towards mondstadt from a young age. with this comes the understanding that there is more than one way to protect the nation she loves, which is why she silently permits diluc, kaeya, and rosaria to operate in the ways they do. she might not participate directly in vigilantism and underground networking, but she can stomach it so far as it doesnât breach innocentsâ safety. this is why she is rightfully disappointed when kaeya puts his men at risk in his character stories. however, itâs noteworthy that even in this situation, her disappointment didnât extend beyond a mere head shake. she didnât hold him accountable for his misconduct through tangible punishment despite her power over him. this is a deliberate message to the player that jean has a lot of faith in kaeya to not be callous and flippant about other peopleâs livelihood even in high-stakes missions. so the logical consequence of this should be to write her relationship with him as ââsimilarââ to her relationship with eula. but itâs not written that way.
I have no doubt that jean does genuinely care for kaeya, I have no reason not to believe that she does and tbh I donât like to read her in bad faith because she is already so heavily villainized by the fandom for an unfunny and misogynistic gimmick by the devs that isnât her fault (which is ironic considering how she is simultaneously placed on a pedestal in the game and deprived of being treated with actual sensitivity and initiative against her horrible circumstances), but it is unfortunate that hoyoverseâs grudge against kaeyaâs existence prevents her from demonstrating her efforts into maintaining their friendship. and Iâve lingered around with jean fans a lot to know that some of them make the most baffling, baseless assumptions of her that simply arenât backed by canon. I mean, itâs pretty obvious to gauge how the larger fandom thinks of her when most of her fan content regurgitates the ânagging mother henâ trope hoyo likes to make her known for.
and going back to eula, most of what is said in her defense is genuinely, 100% applicable to kaeya too. and I do not buy the excuse that kaeya is somehow âless palatableâ from a personality standpoint than her when eulaâs whole shtick is that she deliberately plays up the âholier than thou prickâ persona. (and hoyoverse is historically more concerned with how characters present themselves to the traveler rather than their morality, hence why albedo, for instance, is both ethically dubious and revered endlessly by the narrative because he is in hoyoâs good graces. this same hypocrisy also appears with the harbingers and the fontaine twins). meanwhile, kaeya is adored by the vulnerable, cordial and respectful in his speech with everyone, so charming that people share their darkest secrets with him, and yet, hoyoverse is averse to cutting him some slack the way they are with eula while knowing he is well-intentioned like everyone else. and itâs not just eula, but I used her as an example to talk about the disparity I rambled about above. I have more to say but Iâll leave it here because itâs already a long and scattered read.
Yep, thatâs something I noticed a while back too. Not just with Eula, but how when others fuck up, sometimes more destructively than Kaeya setting off a ruin guard, she doesnât even send any sort of disapproval or disappointment towards them and just goes âoh but theyâre not really like that.â
This was shown as early as the start of the game, where the Traveler asks her if all the other knights are as âstrictâ as Amber after being told that they donât look like citizens of Mondstadt (yeah Genshinâs had sprinkles of microaggressions all over the game since launch), and she instantly goes âoh sheâs really likeable actuallyâ in response to that, no disapproval at Amber voiced at all. Youâd think sheâd say something about making visitors to Mondstadt feeling welcome, but nope. Though thatâs relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, so we can let that slide. But then thereâs how Amberâs attitude towards Kaeya went completely unchecked by anyone, including her, from the manga into the start of the game, to the point where sheâs at a loss for words if the Traveler speaks up for Kaeya when she suspects him of being up to no good.
And even after we watch Diluc voice his disapproval of the knights and jab at their inefficiency, sometimes right in front of her, she still goes âHeâs not that bad, I donât blame him for feeling that way, weâre the ones who have to work harder to earn his approval again somedayâ without being disappointed in him. She also knows about his ventures out in the world to the point of knowing of his âpersona non-grataâ status, but that doesnât stop her from still trying to earn back his trust and approval and telling the Traveler the above.
Or how she just looked on sadly after the Traveler and Paimon trick Kaeya into drinking ink, and doesnât say anything about it other than declining if they ask if she wants to try a drink. I know it was supposed to be a prank, but not even an âare you alright?â for Kaeya who was coughing afterwards or a âthat wasnât nice, Paimon?â Câmon.
Thereâs also that pattern of how while sheâs so nice and accommodating to the knights, anyone involved with the church, the families with prestige and the well-established Mondstadters with names (like some of the business owners), thatâs all Hoyo shows us extending her niceness to. Something else is that, a thing a lot of people pointed out with Paralogism is how she easily she looked the other way while random Mondstadters were being killed and replaced as part of Albedoâs plan, how much that contradicted her âfor Mondstadt, as alwaysâ values, and how itâs essentially glossed over by âthose people had no names or families, Mond wonât good person points for this!â And how a lot of the times when she does put her foot down, itâs with kids, who are a vulnerable group and anyone who was there by association. When it comes to her understanding people who would be marginalized in Mondstadt, she does not get that kind of showing while Kaeya does. I donât think sheâs a bad person for it, but at the same time, itâs not strange for me that sheâd be written like this as a character touted as the ânicest person ever.â Mainly because of some biases that Iâll go into further down.
Though like Iâve said, this kind of thing isnât exclusively a Jean issue, every nice (TM) character from Mondstadt has this issue too when it comes to how they treat Kaeya, and with how much he tends to put effort into knowing and respecting them while they get credit for not even the barest minimum.
For instance, while Kaeya tries to know and respect Lisa, even in areas outside of her âamazing geniusâ like most others do (like in his hangout where he gets her a gift that has to do with her personal style rather than her research), she does not do the same for him and falls into the same pattern of mainly speaking positively about him when itâs something he can do for her or others. In fact, one of the reasons why Ballads and Brews bothered me so much was because Lisa was so pushy towards Kaeya about doing something that made him visibly uncomfortable, and when he tries backing out of it she goes âbut itâs for Razor! It would be a shame if you didnât use your talents to make us happy!â without any reassurance from her end. And the worst part is, this was supposed to be seen as a good thing.
And tbh, thereâs also some cultural context I have from my own Chinese upbringing that might bring some of Hoyoâs biases into light when writing characters like this, including Jean. A lot of people who were raised to treat others with respect and kindness had that come with caveats: they often were taught to prioritize certain people and figure out who was âworthy of respect.â Which sounds nice in theory, but when you look at what gets reinforced, even casually, you start to see a pattern. They got rewarded for impressing people in high positions (parents, teachers, families with more power, etc) and maybe were taught some level of humility by being nice to someone slightly lower ranked than them in some way (like the straight As kid being nice to the kid with a B+ average) but never had to go further than that. Everyone else, particularly marginalized people though? Either talked down on, used as an example of what not to do, or just straight up treated like they donât exist. And that last one is not as harmless as it looks because the people who went through that kind of upbringing often did not learn to extend their empathy outside their narrow circle of whoâs worthy of their people-pleasing. No matter how much you ignore the people in this world who arenât like you, that will never mean that they donât exist and are affected by your biases, even if theyâre not intentional. And Iâll be honest: my own parents tried to raise me like this, and to this day Iâm still unlearning a lot of the shit that came out of it, which is a constant process that Iâm okay with. But a lot of my peers havenât, and a huge part of the reason why is because other people who could be calling them out think it canât be that bad or will try to explain it away because âgood people canât be like that!â Which just buries the problem to keep the peace instead of sitting with the thoughts that would help them unlearn that. And in case youâre wondering if this ties into certain biases such as colorism, misogyny, classism, and ableismâŚit absolutely does.
Thereâs a reason I refer to the Mondstadters as âniceâ (TM) and take so many digs at how it comes off as insincere even if itâs not the intent. Because itâs a recognizable pattern in how so many Chinese people were raised to be âgoodâ and can still spout some of the most messed up shit about marginalized people or anyone who isnât considered âworthwhile.â So while I donât think Jeanâs secretly evil or a prick, I do have a point of reference for how someone could end up like her, despite (especially, rather) a background centered around moral righteousness. And Iâll admit that Iâm personally a lot less patient with portrayals of such characters that depict them solely as innocent, nice people who donât have to unlearn their biases or get challenged on them, because thatâs precisely the mentality around this which causes harmful systems to go unchecked and continue causing harm overall. That and I was one of the people considered ânot worthwhile (read: neurodivergent ethnic minority)â whenever I interacted with my Chinese peers so I often had to deal with the consequences of a lot of their behavior. So while I get why theyâd end up doing something like that, itâs still an issue that needs more than an explanation and philosophizing to be addressed fully. And that includes how it bleeds into games like Genshin and who gets presented as âniceâ or âmorally uprightâ, and how often characters like that are treated like theyâre above criticism.
haven't played in a long while so maybe i'm wrong, since i'm basing my thoughts off screenshots online and friends, but doesn't feel like these days whenever kaeya is mentioned it's never really about him but instead about diluc in some roundabout way?
E-yep. Itâs not just your imagination, Kaeyaâs been really shafted in Mond content lately in favor of the others, not just Diluc (Iâm still baffled at the decision in 6.4 to make him the face of a minigame that turned out to be about Jean). The worst part is though, that this treatment of Kaeya isnât just a lately thing - itâs been a series of patterns thatâs been there since the beginning, and Iâm just going to say it, the reason it kept getting worse is because a lot of the fandom never pushes back against it or gave any indication that it wasnât alright (from what Iâve seen the fandom often makes jokes towards Kaeya that add to it), or if they did they were talked over as if intellectualizing makes the biases in the writing magically not matter (spoiler alert: it doesnât work like that).
Believe it or not, Dilucâs favoritism by the narrative isnât new, itâs been there since the beginning. Heâs the one who gets positive attention from the Traveler and Paimon almost instantly and gets a Story Quest where the player gets to feel all special because heâs nice to them specifically (TM), all the while getting to say some unsavory things about Kaeyaâs motives that got instantly believed by the Traveler and the fandom. Heâs considered the uncrowned King of Mondstadt, and after returning from his travels is heavily revered by the public. Even the people who know of his darker side give him no-strings attached support and second chances, most notably the Dawn Winery Staff, the Traveler and Paimon, Jean, Varka, Alice, Rosaria, Nefer and the Voynich Guild, and even Kaeya himself, which isnât even in the same ballpark as the surface-level compliments and knight worship that often gets touted as proof of Kaeya being âso lovedâ while his shortcomings are often harshly scrutinized, often for years, by many of the same characters who have no problem glossing over Diluc and other revered Mondstadtersâ flaws while lacking in giving Kaeya that much-needed support. Itâs how even after knowing that his father had some unsavory secrets and made massive mistakes that affected both him and Kaeya, Diluc still doesnât lose his reverence of him and itâs treated like a noble endeavor (also just imagine from Kaeyaâs pov, how it would look knowing that Crepus can lie and fuck up but still be forgiven completely while he doesnât get off nearly as easily? Yeah. And people wonder why he was so petty towards Diluc, which even then is one of the nicest responses someone couldâve had to something like that). This isnât new, it wasnât even some big secret unveiled by Hidden Strife or Ballads and Brews, the patternâs been there since both characters were playable.
You know what the fandomâs response to that pattern has always been? More jabs about how Kaeya âdeservedâ everything coming at him for being a âliarâ even though everyone in Mondstadt has dishonesty or secrets of some sort that never even get called out, including Diluc. Jokes about his incompetence, like his laziness, drinking or most recently, about how much heâd suck as a lawyer. How when the white characters also displayed the traits Kaeya got scrutinized for, they were treated as amazing characters for it. How Kaeya would often get sidelined while his interesting traits were projected onto said white characters who got the benefit of the doubt without putting in nearly as much effort as he does (I.e. his amazing dynamics with the kids, especially Klee, are often ignored in favor of debating whether Varka, Albedo, or Diluc is the best big brother for her. While Kaeya is successful in teaching her crucial life skills and didnât hesitate to put himself between Klee and Abyss-inflicted Durin in v6.2?? Câmon).
This isnât to say that Kaeyaâs never had his own standout content, because he did and it was often really good. But even then it didnât guarantee that he would be treated with dignity by fans. Because you know what kind of reactions by the fandom Iâve seen wherever Kaeya got anything to himself that doesnât further their big Khaenriâah lore plot?
Kaeyaâs been stated to be seen as an omniscient big brother by Benny in CN supplementary material, and they have the same normal and charged attack patterns so itâs implied that Kaeya trains him? Iâve seen fans insisting that Diluc mustâve trained him too, even when the latterâs name isnât in the conversation and despite not having the benefit of the doubt from such supplementary material.
Kaeya gets to hang out with some other nationsâ Pyro girls in the new yearsâ 2023 art? People saying Diluc shouldâve been there.
Kaeyaâs hangout branch in Liyue is about his own unconditional sense of kindness to the point he doesnât even remember helping this guy out like three times? For a time a lot of fan attention went towards Diluc nearly beating the shit out of someone to protect the maids, and how heâs a feminist icon for that.
Kaeya meets Thoma in 5.7, they have great chemistry and Kaeya gets treated like a normal person in an extended conversation for once? Cue some people insisting that Thoma mustâve befriended Kaeya to date his brother.
Donât get me wrong, I like Diluc, but you see the pattern here, right? And why, if weâre going by the assumption that thereâs a new writing team whoâs heavily trying to cater to what the fandom wantsâŚwhy theyâd assume that the fandom doesnât want Kaeya to have anything thatâs really his?
Even when Diluc isnât involved, Kaeya doesnât get treated with a lot of respect either, and I shouldnât have to say this: just because heâs connected to the major lore or had a lot more screentime previously does not automatically mean he didnât receive derogatory treatment, whether itâs by the fandom, the writing or by other characters from Mondstadt or Khaenriâah. Him getting a major lore connection or plot is the bare minimum treatment they could be giving him, and even then, theyâd still have to put effort into giving him consistent presence and respectful treatment. Keyword being consistent, because somethingâs been consistent in the way the narrative treats him and it wasnât a positive pattern.
For example, the reason Iâve said that Jeanâs relationship with Kaeya can feel one-sided isnât just because she often just talks about how much he can do for her and Mondstadt, itâs in how he still gets the short end of the stick compared to how she acts with other characters. While sheâs not one of those characters jabbing at him or undermining his reputation, she isnât shown pushing back at those who do it despite being someone who holds a lot of influence in Mondstadt, and itâs really visible how much more effort the writing puts into how she treats the rest of the cast compared to what sheâs shown doing for Kaeya. That including Diluc, whose feelings and humanity are acknowledged by her as early as the Prologue and her Profile Quotes about him, while most of what she has to say about Kaeya is how much he can do for her and others (including how much he lights up a room), and very little about how he might feel about anything or pushing back against the misconceptions people might have of him. And of course, it wouldnât be so noticeable if this wasnât the same Kaeya whoâs consistently shown putting in so much effort for her, both in work and in terms of being her actual friend and supporter.
The same pattern happens with other characters as well: weâre told they love him, but when it comes to their actions they donât paint a picture of people who empathize with him or truly value him beyond what he can do for them. And again, it would be one thing if Kaeya was apathetic or was only ever shown being rude or cruel to them, but he isnât. He never stops at the bare minimum or normalized treatment for them when it comes to compassion and support, even if he has a problem with them, and can be called out for going too far. Thatâs why his jokes and teasing actually feel light-hearted, because that isnât all heâs shown doing towards them. On the flip side, their lack of effort compared to him and all the credit they get for it gets off-putting really fast, not helped by how theyâre also shown to be capable of decency towards other characters around them. Even when someone did have a decent Profile Quote that acknowledged how Kaeya might by affected by his hardships for once (Varka), it still didnât translate into his onscreen treatment of him, whereas Varkaâs concern for Dilucâs feelings and well-being was constantly spotlighted in the version he was released in.
And when it comes to his lore importance and Khaenriâahn heritage, you know what gets focused on the most in fan content? How betrayed Diluc feels about it and how much the fandom will insist that itâs an understandable reaction. What it means for the Travelerâs precious answers and big lore reveals. How various Mondstadt characters might react to finding out that heâs a âtraitorâ or âliar.â Even what Albedo and Dainsleif think of it taking priority over how Kaeya might feel, etc. Almost nothing about how it mightâve affected his relationship with the truth, morality, and view of people and society growing up beyond waxing poetic over and over about how heâll be nothing but a liar and a traitor. About how heâs actually really nice and holding it together for someone whoâs had to go through everything he did, and how valid it would be for him to feel anything other than âit is what it is, oh well.â About how compelling it is that despite being dealt a horrendous hand in life that would convince anyone that they werenât a good person, Kaeyaâs desire to defy destiny and be kind without the promise of a reward survived, and heâs trying to develop his own identity around it. And thatâs not even everything that could be explored in terms of how Kaeyaâs lore affects his development. Kaeyaâs characterization and feelings in the matter often take a backseat to big lore plot (TM) or how sad some white character feels about it first and foremost. Those precious answers and lore (TM) are treated with more care than he is, both by the game and the fandom. Even when he shows vulnerability around such subjects, itâs quickly ignored to focus on answers or the other partiesâ feelings. Would it be the end of the world for other characters or the narrative to take Kaeyaâs human feelings, reasonings and boundaries into consideration, whether itâs in-game or in fan content? With how much he has to take into consideration constantly already?
With all that in mind, Iâd be really happy to see Kaeya in an event quest/hangout in the near future where he doesnât get pressured into giving anyone their answers/getting sucked into big lore plot or doing something for someone elseâs sake, just one where he gets showered with genuine respect and support from the other characters involved. For example, how about another Inazuman festival where Thoma invites him and makes good on his promise to introduce Kaeya to his friends, and they all show him kindness without involving his acts of service to them? Not only would it be so uplifting for a character whoâs had to be othersâ hope for so long without much respite, but itâll actually make me more invested whenever he gets back into the fray of the Archon Quests because of how old itâs gotten to see Kaeya get treated the same way over and over regardless of big plot developments (TM). Hell, since v6.6 is on the horizon with three new characters about to be released, fingers crossed that Nicole, Lohen or Prune will have a lot of amazing things to say about Kaeya without any asterisks, or even go on an adventure with him where heâs treated like an equal. There can even be some quest or hangout where Kaeya dives into Enkanomiya, the Ruins of Dahri, the Chasm, or Nod-Krai and learns a bit more about his heritage. Like, a big deal was made over how heâs the descendant of the Founder of the Abyss Order, but it was just left at that to focus on the Travelerâs answers. How does Kaeya feel about all this?
How would he feel about the name Alberich being under scrutiny because of its association with the founder of the Abyss Order? How would he feel if he knew it stemmed from said ancestorâs vulnerabilities being taken advantage of and having his intentions be twisted by time and other peopleâs interpretations of what happened? How would he feel about another Alberich from the same timeframe, Anfortas, being undeniably heroic to the end in contrast to the nameâs association with the Abyss, especially after the world did everything to convince him that he isnât a good person and that he canât run from his familyâs dark past? How would he react to finding out that another family member, Caribert, had many of the same goals and desires that he does and never got to fulfill them while he has the chance to do so? Thatâs the kind of stuff I want to see explored, Kaeyaâs vulnerabilities and character development being tied in with his lore and its importance to Teyvat. Give Kaeya something of his own, the other characters can appear alongside him, but in the end, how he feels and navigates it should be whatâs prioritized.
I had a lot to say on this matter, so I hope that was an enjoyable read

Things I wish the Genshin fandom would understand, part 3:
Just because a character has lore importance doesnât guarantee that theyâre treated with dignity by the game or the fanbase. They can still be subject to a lot of the misogynistic, ableist, colorist and racist bullshit thatâs common in the game, and portraying them with care involves going past the bare minimum of only liking them for theories or the potential for the Teyvat equivalent of a Michael Bay plot. Theyâll need to be consistently treated with respect by the narrative and other characters, and their feelings and autonomy have to be treated like they matter, no exceptions. And not just doing it just once and patting yourself on the back, they should have that almost every time they show up in the game.
(I.e. Kaeya being casually and blatantly disrespected in ways that wouldâve been immediately called out if it was a white character [and considering people laughed at his treatment by the Traveler and Paimon for years but were suddenly shocked and offended when it happened to FurinaâŚyeah] should not be waved off under âheâs so loved though!â or âbut he might become Khaenriâahn royalty!â as much as it is)
Reasons Why Fans of Color Leave/Donât Interact with Fandom
Casual racism that is brushed off as âan innocent mistakeâ or âthey didnât mean itâ and then everyone pretending like it didnât happen and moving on with their day (repeat)
Speaking over fans of color about issues that pertain to them specifically
When fans of color speak out about something that makes them uncomfortable or why that donât interact with it (usually because of the racial/ethnic bias) they are accused of being antiâs or pro-censorship
Characters of color being used as scapegoats/bashed/plot devicesÂ
Characters of color never getting happy endings/real development
Backlash against characters of color if they do anything other than be a white characterâs side kick/best friend
Actors of characters of color being harassed for something their character did or didnât do
White characters/actors getting all the attention/credit despite the fact that they are a side character to a POC or on the same level as the POC
Fanfic authors patting themselves on the back for writing a ârealisticâ character of color and itâs just a bunch of stereotypes
Being told that they should be happy they were even included when they call out the above people
White fans crying about persecution/exclusion because their fav character/trope/kink/ship isnât loved by allÂ
Fan artists re-imaging characters of color as white/lightening skin tone
Everyone rushing to a white fans defense after a well deserved call out while the fan of color receives hate
Never having a safe fandom space and always having to be on guard with new people/fandoms/chats etc because theyâve been burned before
Fans of color constantly being expected to âeducateâ everyone else while also staying calm/polite no matter how disrespectful people get
Racism only being acknowledged when itâs blatant enough that white fans canât ignore it anymore
Headcanons for characters of color being treated as âpoliticalâ while white headcanons are treated as universal/relatable
Fandom deciding a character of color is âannoying,â âaggressive,â or âbadly writtenâ for behavior white characters are praised for
Characters of color being reduced to âthe strong one,â âthe sassy one,â âthe wise one,â etc instead of being allowed complexity
Fans insisting âhistorical accuracyâ suddenly matters only when people want more diversity
Whitewashing in edits, fancasts, cosplay praise, and fanart being treated as normal
Ships involving characters of color being ignored unless they involve a white character
Canon interracial relationships getting less support because fandom prefers white fanon ships
Characters of color being killed off, traumatized, or sacrificed to develop white characters emotionally
âI donât see colorâ takes that erase actual conversations about race and representation
Watching fandom rally around âmental health matters!â until the character struggling is not white
Black characters especially being treated as âtoo angry,â âtoo loud,â or âtoo hostileâ for reacting normally to situations
Asian characters getting infantilized, fetishized, or turned into stereotypes instead of actual people
Indigenous and brown characters being erased from conversations about representation entirely
Disabled characters of color being ignored even within diversity discussions
Canonically brown/Black characters constantly being drawn with Eurocentric features
The way fandom treats accents, hairstyles, or AAVE as jokes unless a white character/fan does it
Characters of color constantly being drawn, edited, or imagined lighter than they are in canon because fandom is more comfortable engaging with them when theyâre closer to whiteness
Fans assuming characters are white by default unless canon explicitly âprovesâ otherwise
Characters of color being erased from fan edits, merch, moodboards, and fandom events
"How could no one have known 'Mo Xuanyu" was actually Wei Wuxian? He acted exactly like his teenage self!" First of all, Jiang Cheng didn't even know "Mo Xuanyu" was Wei Wuxian because "Mo Xuanyu" wasn't acting like Wei Wuxian in front of him until he just so happened to catch "Mo Xuanyu" panic at the sight of a dog, which was a Wei Wuxian trait. Second, no Wei Wuxian was not acting like this as a teenager:
They wouldnât have snuck into Lan Wangjiâs bed in the middle of the night, or insisted on sharing a bath with him, or applied make-up and then pestered him with questions about whether they were beautiful, like an exotic flower that needed to be pampered.
âChapt. 28: Morning Dew I, fanyiyi
Him liking Lan Wangji and wanting to be around him is like one of the most normal things in the mdzs world considering that everyone loved and wanted to be around Hanguang-jun. Him doing all this was new, outrageous behavior. That's why Lan Wangji didn't recognize Wei Wuxian when he first met "Mo Xuanyu" but when "Mo Xuanyu" played Wangxian.
See I do believe that both Ragbros had their faults in their grand fight but I'm a bit baffled at how many people pin the majority of the blame on Kaeya and his bad timing.
I feel insane every time someone says they were both EQUALLY wrong because like??
Flaming claymore? To the face? Kaeya literally had to gain a vision else he DIES.
Kaeya didn't choose the way he lived. It was taught to him by people he thought he shouldn't disobey. And when he realized that it isn't what he wanted, he was already knee deep in lies.
"Kaeya picked a terrible timing" Completely true. Pretty stupid of him. Best case scenario where he reveals it not knowing the outcome, he was inconsiderate. Worst case scenario where he wanted to trick Diluc into punishing him, really selfish.
However are we also forgetting that he was also grieving and carrying crushing guilt for nearly an entire decade
In Kaeya's best case scenario, Diluc lost his temper and nearly killed his brother because of his grief, feeling betrayed and in turn betraying Kaeya by saying (in the heat of the moment) that he doesn't accept him.
In Kaeya's WORST case scenario, he never felt safe around Diluc in the first place and fully believed that Diluc would turn his blade on him given the right incentive. Though this might be more of a Kaeya problem with his trust issues. Unfortunately those issues were absolutely reinforced when he was proven right and Diluc DID end up attacking him
TDLR; I saw one too many comments about
"Why did Kaeya pick the worst time"
"Kaeya saw Diluc having the worst day of his life and thought "how could I make it worse""
""How do I make it about me?" -Kaeya probably"
that I was starting to believe people actually think that Kaeya confiding in Diluc at a pretty bad time was a worse offense than a CLAYMORE to the FACE infused with FIRE.
Firstly I just want to say that I very much agree that people refusing to acknowledge that Kaeya was also grieving in the situation is so irritating,Crepusâs death was horrible for both of them and acting like it was worse for Diluc is stupid.Especially silly when there is an interesting conversation to be had about the differences in what they were going through with,
Diluc who has just witnessed multiple people die, probably thought he was going to as well I mean in the manga Ursa gets incredibly close to him while chained, then got a brief moment where he though he and Crepus made it out only for the delusion to have backfired leading to him having to kill his own father + all the questions Crepus using the delusion leaves him with
Then you have Kaeya who had to arrived and saw Diluc holding a dead crepus surrounded by other dead people with no context, who feels guilty for the reaction his grief manifested into something he canât even control, who is now also confronting about all the things he has struggled with internally for years and years while in a terrible mental state and having to deal with the questions Crepusâs death leaves like Diluc
Like discussing those aspects and how they affected their mindsets going into the fight could be really great but nope weâre just gonna fight about who was sadder when Crepus died instead đŞpleaseeeeee people talk about how Diluc is realising his father has left him in the dark when Kaeya informs him that he too is keeping secrets , pleaseeeee talk about Kaeya doesnât tell Diluc expecting comfort but because of guilt pleaseeeeee
But moving on to my main , I do think there is a bit more to discussions about their fight than what youâve said because simply put we donât know that much about it. Do want to preface with my opinions on the fault of the fight cause I feel like they give a good idea of what biases I could have :3
I donât thereâs any world was kaeya is worse and with the information we have saying Diluc was worse is entirely fair and I think it is possible for details we donât have to push the situation to them both being equally at fault (what did kaeya say, what were Dilucâs intentions when he started the fight and what attacks were made)
But I think some assumptions are being treated as canon information here mainly the idea that Kaeya almost died in their fight / Diluc tried to kill him.I am not saying this is definitely not the case but as much as it gets said in talks about their fight it has been confirmed nowhere.
Even the idea that Kaeya got a claymore to the face in unconfirmed right now, which I know might seem like Iâm a Diluc fan trying to argue semantics here , I did think that the scar thing could only mean that Diluc hit Kaeyaâs eye for a while and I still think itâs a likely option but someone pointed out that the injury could be caused by an explosion due to the high heat and cold of their weapons touching, which is an idea I personally like as Kaeyaâs injury being an entirely circumstantial accident that was a result of him receiving a gift from the gods/celestia right after he tells someone about his khaenriâahn origins is just so tragic to me but canon could really go in any direction. iirc en says the two elements meeting caused a swirl of wind and cn says something like a hurricane? So it is canon that a big burst of elements did happen
But as of right now (I think) the only canon info we have about there fight is that they drew their blades and pointed them at each other +Kaeya felt like this was a punishment for a lifetime of lies+Kaeyaâs vision manifested while their blades were crossing, the power surging through his sword+ Kaeyaâs left eye got injured leaving it scarring but not blinded
Also want to mention the fact that Kaeyaâs character stories to say he anticipated Dilucâs anger though a letter in hidden strife says he didnât expect conflict so the meaning there is a bit more interpretative , personally think he expected an angry discussion and not a duel but that is just guessing on my part
Very sorry if my rambling is irrelevant ,I hope this doesnât seem like Iâve hijacked your post to disagree with you I just really love these boys and think we as a fandom are missing out on some interesting ideas because we arenât looking at other directions the info we have could lead in,even people still feel the popular interpretation is better or it ends up cannon later on considering other ideas while we donât have many details is fun to me :3
Don't worry, it doesn't feel like you're hijacking anything! But I do think you're kinda missing the point of my post a bit,
I'm not denying they were both wrong nor am I placing blame on who's at fault here. Every part of that fight was contributed by then both in some way with Kaeya instigating and Diluc reacting, I'm just pointing out that it frustrates me that people go and blame Kaeya for his timing and defend Diluc's actions as justified.
Actually if you read my other reblog, I go more in depth on how it adds to Diluc's character and how his grief is a big part of his story.
You're right about the lack of knowledge we have of that fight however, that was my bad. But even at its core, Diluc was definitely (at least at the moment) aiming to harm. Kaeya had to fight back and meet his flames head on with a newly gained vision which meant that he was within the direct hit of said flames.
The tragedy of that fight was that it wasn't justified. Kaeya didn't deserve that blade turned on him that night. And while Diluc's actions were understandable due to... so many factors my god was it a just a universally terrible day for him, but it still doesn't justify him attacking Kaeya, regardless of how it went down, claymore to the face or just his pyro heading towards Kaeya. It explains his actions, it doesn't justify it.
This goes for Kaeya too, his timing leaves a lot to be desired and it's understandable why he shattered that night. It was really inconsiderate of him to drop that bombshell on Diluc while they were both grieving. But the difference between these actions ARE staggering, one caused a shattered worldview, and the other was basically disownment and bodily harm.
They both went through such different conflicts on that night.
I'm just genuinely baffled at how many people like to pin the blame on Kaeya and his horrendous timing.
I do agree that more people should tackle the general betrayal that Diluc experienced not just from Kaeya's confessions, but from Crepus's delusion and the Knight's cover-up and how more people should acknowledge that Crepus's death wasn't Kaeya's breaking point, it was his own reaction that finally broke him (The laugh, the relief, etc)
This was kind of a rant after reaching a boiling point with how genshin treats Kaeya and his conflict with the Ragnvindrs in general and how it affects the fandom's perception of The Fight.
Every time we get more information on Crepus, it's always related to Diluc and never ONCE Kaeya despite how much Crepus clearly meant to him. The only info we ever get outside of his character stories is from Varka's one voiceline.
Every comfort, every sympathy, everything that relates to Crepus in general was FULLY placed on Diluc and while I'm not against Diluc getting the spotlight (especially since it's his main conflict), the complete lack of his brother makes it seem like Kaeya cares less. It makes Kaeya's actions during the fight a lot less understandable. In turn, the fandom seems more content in babying Diluc and blaming Kaeya for it, which led to my post in the first place.
There are more frustrations I have in how Genshin treats Kaeya's story in general
(seriously, they often sideline him from his own lore sometimes that I have to just stand there like đ§. Why does the traveler not tell Kaeya about Caribert despite it literally being connected to his family name. Why is he haunting the narrative UNKNOWINGLY as he babysits Klee. Why is his conflict with Diluc always used to further Diluc's lore rather than his own, it feels like he's more of an accessory recently. Last time we ever got to hear how he actually feels about stuff was in his hangout quest. That was 3 years ago. The recent Mondstadt event used him as the face of the event but he had ONE line. And it wasn't even in the mandatory story, you had to walk up to him. Ugh)
Point is, I'm not exactly pointing blame. I'm just frustrated that people actually think that Diluc turning his blade on his brother was a proportional response and not treat it like the tragedy that it is. An indefensible act that was done in grief and anger that can't be taken back, leading to their complicated relationship
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond and explain a bit more to me <3333333 really appreciated . You are very right on my missing the point here , got too hung up on the details and missed the main thing, which I agree with you on entirely.
The way Kaeya is treated by both game and fandom genuinely so bad . To add something that will hopefully be more in line with something youâve said this time. One of the biggest examples Iâve found of Kaeya being treated more like a plot device than a character is actually how the fandom treats the whole Mondstadt or khaenriâah choice and the things that surround it like his feeling towards the people of Mondstadt or his feelings about his father(bio in this case)
This choice is something that is fundamentally cruel,a decision that would force Kaeya to give up happiness or truth and most importantly a decision Kaeya does not want to make . Monaâs voice line tells us that when fate catches up Kaeya will have a choice to make and Kaeyaâs hangout has him practically screaming at players âI want to defy fateâ and yet so many discussions are still about him picking one or the other and how it would affect literally everyone other than him, which admittedly might be because the game makes it pretty clear that making a choice between the two would make him miserable because he wants both and that really isnât a good thing to acknowledge when weâre talking about the far more important topic of how Diluc would feel if Kaeya didnât give up all ties to his homeland so he can finally be a real Mondstadter (because still loving his homeland that he had to leave because of horrible circumstances shows that he actually hates everyone in Mondstadt and is working with the abyss order). Like thatâs just a horrible narrative to perpetuate especially if you listen to people people who are immigrants talk about their experiences and the expectations placed on them by society it just makes it so clear how gross these ideas of having to pick once place are but people just wonât let it go đ
Then you have the constant demonisation of Kaeyaâs biological father to uplift the ragnvindrs and frame Mondstadt as this place with no faults that saved Kaeya from evil khaenriâah, which like Iâm not going to say Kaeyaâs dad is a great guy we really donât know that much about him but Iâm not going to say be sucks either when things like caribert have Kaeya saying that his father left him to simply keep him alive , which clearly implies that whatever situation they were in is clearly not an easy one.
Which to speak more on the Alberichs you are once again so right because why has the traveler not talked to Kaeya about caribert and clothar like can they not atleast be like âhey Kaeya you know how dain said you were a descendant of the abyss orders founder Well heâs called clothar btwâ Like say something????? Everyday I sit hoping that the game will clarify how exactly those guys are related and how on earth anfortas comes into it like is he pirate grandpa?? Who is pirate grandpa and where is he, I need confirmation that Kaeya is inspired by that man
And to talk about Kaeyaâs other family the way he is erased from almost all narratives about crepus is horrible and I stand to strong in the opinion that most instances where Varka talks about him or is involved would be better if Kaeya was there . Why on earth is he not the one with Diluc in lohens quest when it seems like this will be a conclusion to the drake incident . Let the boys be involved with crepus storylines together , let Kaeya talk about him outside of the context of Diluc he probably has so much to say about that Crepus when he meant so so much to him
Could rant about how underutilised this man is and how much I hope he will be integral to the khaenriâah storyline (đ)but these are the main thoughts I can type out semi coherently (I hope) so just want to finish by going back to my original reblog instead , my wording abilities really arenât the best but point I was trying to make there(while missing yours hehe)was that the fandom getting caught up in blame is pretty ridiculous when we donât have that many details and the ones we do have make it pretty clear that they both sucked in different ways , Diluc more so with what we have at the moment, so maybe we should look more about their mindsets because we do have details about that and just theorise about the details to there fight for now, seemed more relevant to the point you were making when I first wrote it but rereading not so much ,did not mean to sound like I though you were trying to point the blame in any direction or that I thought him attacking Kaeyaâs was justifiable , hoping Iâve made my thoughts a bit more intelligible this time because what youâre talking about really is interesting to me <3333
People are roasting this person for asking a dumb question. But I think this is a valid query and the answer is actually pretty cool.
Unfortunately, you usually get a response like this.
This is accurate. But not very explanatory. "It's how light works" just feels a bit condescending.
We need to Bill Nye this shit.
The first thing you need to know is that light competes with light. And the brightest light is always the victor.
And this phenomenon is not specific to cameras. Our eyeballs also play in the light vs light competition.
Every person with a mobile phone has already seen this effect. What happens when you look at your phone on a really sunny day?
You can't see shit.
The sun is so overwhelmingly bright that it is reflecting light off the screen that is much brighter than the light being emitted from the phone.
However, newer phones are starting to have screens that are extremely bright. Up to 3000 nits in some cases. They are able to emit light brighter than the sun's reflection.
What happens to our eyes when we go outside on a sunny day?
Our pupils get as small as they possibly can. Smaller pupils let in a lot less light. And when they are that contracted, we can only register really really bright things.
But if we are in the dark, our pupils get super big. They allow in a bunch more light. And after we adjust to the dark, we can see really really dim things.
If our pupils stayed contracted and we looked at a starry sky, it would be as blank as the phone screen on a sunny day. You can even test this with an eye patch. Go into a very bright room and keep one eye covered for about 20 minutes. Then go outside and look at the sky with each eye. One eye will see stars and the other will not.
And this should give you a clue as to how light pollution works. Light bounces off stuff in the atmosphere. And when a city shoots a bunch of light upward, that light reflects back down and is much brighter than the stars.
The brightest light always wins.
Most stars are just incredibly dim. You need to be in a very dark environment in order to see them shine. You need them bigass pupils fully activated. And cameras need either a very large aperture (lens pupils), or a very long time interval to see them.
The sun is so so soooo bright. Many thousands of times brighter than distant stars. And the moon is also very bright. Especially if you are on or near the surface. The properties of moon dust, the regolith, are a near perfect diffuse reflector. Which is why astronauts struggled to see and photograph stars during their moon excursions.
If they opened up their camera apertures and did a long exposure, they'd just get a blank white frame.
There are dozens of photos in which that exact thing happened.
This is exactly what happens if you accidentally shine a flashlight directly into your eyes.
But if we ever have a moon mission during lunar night, those astronauts are in for a starry treat. They won't have any atmosphere to absorb starlight. So they'll be able to see the Milky Way, in all its glory, with just their naked eyes.
also, apparently, when you are at the bottom of a deep well during daytime, and the sun is NOT directly in line-of-sight over it, you CAN see the Stars.
I really hope this doesn't come off as embarrassing, but this is actually a myth.
But it is a really cool ancient myth from one of Aristotle's essays written 2400 years ago.
And I think it is kind of neat that intellectuals from back then were trying to understand and figure out how light works. And it is impressive that a myth has lasted this long.
The problem is that the sky is a giant light source. A pretty bright one, in fact. People often forget that the sky is a giant hemisphere of scattered light because the sun is so overwhelming in comparison. It's just so much dimmer than the sun, it gets outshone on sunny days.
But you can see the sky being a light source on snowy days. If you look at photos of snow, you'll notice all the shadows are tinted blue.
That's the sky getting into the nooks and crannies where the sun don't shine.
So if you were deep in a well, you'd just see the blue sky.
HOWEVER, if you were to create a deep hole on the moon during lunar daytime, you could totally see stars. You'd be in a dark environment, your pupils would open up, there is no atmosphere to scatter light from the sun, and the glare of the surface wouldn't compete with the starlight.
Aristotle was on to something, he just chose the wrong celestial body.
Naomi is an anti-vaxx dipshit and not a great person.
But I think this question was asked in good faith and is also a perfectly valid query.
Moon nomenclature can be a bit confusing. People will reference the far side of the Moon and the dark side of the Moon and conflate the two.
From our perspective, there is a near side and a far side. The "near side" is always facing Earth. And people sometimes think the side facing away from us is also the "dark" side of the Moon.
But the far side is not always in darkness. Only when we see a full moon is it dark.
Astronomers have tried to update the terminology to lunar day and lunar night, but that hasn't really caught on as popular vernacular. It's hard to undo Pink Floyd's influence.
All of this is to say, it is easy for people to get confused about the far side of the Moon being illuminated by the Sun. It's quite common to imagine it as in perpetual darkness.
But lunar night is not completely in a void of darkness. The light from the universe does very dimly illuminate the lunar backside. And while traditional optics aren't easily able to see the Moon's butt, NASA does have a special UV camera that surveys the lunar night.
It's called the "Lyman-Alpha Mapping Project."
They love their clever acronyms.
I've seen people also confused about the lighting in this photo.
The Sun is directly behind the Moon, yet the left side seems to have light wrapping around to the lunar night side.
And the reason for this makes my light-loving heart full. Because light is light and it works the same way in space as it does in my studio.
This phenomenon is called "Da Vinci glow" or earthshine. The Sun is bouncing light off the Earth, and it is reflecting onto the side of the Moon. And even though it is usually too dim to see without a very long exposure, this eclipse was able to reveal it.
Here is what earthshine looks like to human eyes adjusted for darkness.
And here is a brightened, long exposure example.
It's literally just this on a cosmic scale...
There is also moonshine, which is more than just a legally dubious beverage.
You may have already seen an example.
The left is exposed as our eyeballs would see it. And the right is brightened with long exposure and a high gain setting.
The Sun is behind the Earth, but it is shining light off the Moon and giving very dim illumination to the night side.
The Moon is a big retroreflector. You have seen a different form of retroreflection when you are driving at night and the highway signs light up as you pass. Your headlights are shining directly back at you.
The special properties of Moon dust give it a near-perfect diffuse matte reflection. And when the Sun is in the right position, it acts similarly to our car headlights and the light shines back in our direction.
A studio reflector needs to be angled just right to shine the light exactly where you want it. The angle of the light is like a bumper shot in billiards.
The Moon scatters light in all directions like a typical matte surface.
However, a non-retroreflective matte reflection on a sphere typically has a bright center and then graduates into darkness around the edges. But the Moon's super matte retroreflection maintains brightness across almost the entire surface area.
So even though the Moon is quite small compared to the Earth, its regolith creates a powerful reflection of the Sun's light. You'd think a full moon would be twice as bright as a half moon, but this retroreflective surge makes the Moon roughly 10 times brighter.
If the Moon weren't such a dusty bitch, moonlight would be dimmer and that nighttime photo of the Earth may not have been possible.

the reason why chengxian is fundamentally uninteresting to me is because more often than not i find that the shippers use is as a way of putting Wei Wuxian into a role that was essentially forced upon him by Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan: acting as Jiang Cheng's other half/bodyguard/partner everything. They put his entire personality revolve around being Jiang Cheng's dark possessive and overprotective dom shixiong. Which absolutely kills meeeeeee that is a free spirit set him freeeeeee
Wow. People are really trying to stir up trouble in OPs comments and reblogs.
Well. I also dislike chengxian as a ship because I read in the book that Wei Wuxian gave Jiang Cheng more than enough and all he received in return was slander, ingratitude, and abuse.
And I'm glad you put it in the main tag. I have to see opinions in here that irritate me literally every single day--from factually inaccurate "metas", homophobia, racist takes, cyberbullying/harrassment, defaming the author... the list goes on.
But alas, I return because I love talking about and seeing art for mdzs.
If people think Lan Wangji was unhinged in the book for how he loves Wei Ying, they better go to Frieren fandom and said Himmel was the unhinged.
Like they really said Lan Wangji was unhinged for confessing to Wei Ying when he was in delirious state "while expecting Wei Ying to remember"... Bitch, that his brother expecting Wei Ying to remember, not Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan just said whatever, including confessing his love to Wei Ying to snap Wei Ying out of that stage so that Wei Ying could escape
They even framed the part where Lan Zhan punched the tree after kissing Wei Ying at Phoenix Mountains event as "horny punch"... They can't be this serious??? Like actually, this is unhinged take but they have the gall to call Lan Wangji unhinged.
It's the strange shifting of reasons for me.
He's unhinged because he acts on his romantic and sexual interest in Wei Wuxian.
But then this is downplayed as just "him being horny".
No, he acted on his feelings, realized and felt GUILTY he acted on those impulsively because he's not supposed to according to his clan precepts, as well as him kissing someone he thinks is not interested in him. Why is it that his love for Wei Wuxian is reduced to a caricature of "gay horny guy who can't control himself".
THAT's homophobic when there's context for this kiss and Wei Wuxian himself is fully capable of retaliating during it, but he notices that person is trembling, and being a romantic himself choses to actively let this person explore his mouth.
It's also wildly homophobic to say a gay man finally speaking to someone he loves is selfish, when this entire part is summarized by third party foot in mouth Lan Xichen, who says Lan Wangji was speaking to Wei Wuxian tenderly NOT A CONFESSION btw, but everyone could tell he was in love with Wei Wuxian due to his ACTIONS and his softness.
What the hell do they mean "expect him to remember" a non confession that was never made. The actual CONFESSION was during Yunping Inn and he thinks Wei Wuxian sleeps with him because of gratitude for protection and an IOU. The entire point of the juxtaposing kiss from Phoenix Mountain and escalating sex in Yunping is the two yearning for the other while simultaneously thinking the other is "just being nice" while they get taken advantage of.
I'm tired VERY TIRED of queer romances being called unhinged and just for the horny. No, you're just illiterate and refuse to engage deeper with the text that's spelled out to make queer characters a constant sexual aggressor for a tired joke.
What annoys me in the wave of âour unproblematic respectable romance of cqlâ vs âtheir unhinged problematic bookâ is that itâs often written by people who havenât even read the book??? Like theyâve read about those âcringe scenesâ and they donât know the context for them in the book. Every now and then the whole discussion about the kiss scene comes up and every time it annoys me bc lwj himself addresses that he wasnât right to kiss blindfolded WWX. Plus it plays a part in him being afraid of forcing WWX into a relationship against his will. Itâs as if these scenes have thematic relevance to the plot that one can get if they read the book and do not treat the book scenes as some extra content for the cql show? And the whole âthey have a deeper relationship because they started as friends who made a promise and had a side-quest togetherâ is also funny to me. Like I do get the appeal of having more teen wangxian, I do. But again, itâs like the book is trying to tell us something showing us a pair of teenagers who are kinda tangled up in their relationship because they are young! And inexperienced! And showing us how they are just robbed of any possibility to naturally come together because the word is cruel. All on contrast to how easily and naturally they get together after WWX resurrection within what? Couple of months of just not having to constantly fight for survival? Again, itâs like the novel is trying to tell us smth and it doesnât have the same message nor narrative as cql. And Iâm saying that as someone who lowkey enjoys cql as a separate media.
Thanks for mentioning the "friends first bonding" thing used against novel Wangxian! This is always such a funny criticism of the book, since it gets acknowledged by Wei Wuxian himself that he would have very much enjoyed being intimate sooner, and this exact scenario is role played through first with Lan Wangji's fantasies and then with Wei Wuxian's own. And this continues as they go on to visit Wei Wuxian's childhood grounds of Yunmeng on dates as Wei Wuxian had always wanted. It's never brought up that Wei Wuxian was explicitly says he wanted Lan Wangji to come home with him because he romantically loved him in their youth. Their tragedy is everything else including others not letting them until they are well into their adult lives and because of a chance. And they do become friends! They are the others closest friends even while they are married!
The biggest issue I personally take with how young Wangxian are portrayed in CQL is that Wei Wuxian actively gets Lan Wangji's drunk without the explicit consent from the books. There's the underlying consent both do give each other that they dodge around and are careful with for the sake of the other in the novel, and neither want to hurt the other's feelings especially when major trust has been established in such a short time. We aren't really shown that with CQL because it's simple not supposed to be meant to be taken as romantic (unless you know the originating material is queer and a bl) which undermines this implicit trust they naturally have and learn to have with each other for romantic purposes in the novel.
I just realized something about the theme of MDZS after getting very annoyed as this fandom keeps perpetrating this idea that the theme of MDZS is how "rumors" can destroy life.
Some of the so-called "rumors" that created by the rich bitches are literally just fake news that framed as the truth. Rumors couldn't do real damage to anyone if they are just Rumors. The only way "rumors" can actually destroy or tained someone when those rumors led people to the truth and exposed that skeleton in the closet of someone.
Rumors at best may annoy the fuck out of you and may alter some people's perception about you, as long as you ignores those rumors and don't bring it up again, it will dissipate really quick.
A fake new, especially coming from the rich bitches? Your life is kinda fuck, especially when you have no mean to prove that's a fake new.
Can't forget how Jiang Cheng woven both the truth and lie into the new when he announced to the Cultivation World about Wei Ying. Defected? Yes! Enemy of the Cultivation World? Okay, Jiang Cheng, you really wanted to screw Wei Ying even further.
Jin Guangyao got away with the clan extermination due to fake new of that clan killing his heir (More like it started from a lie and evolved into fake news). He also got away with the murder of his father because of omission of the truth.
(Technically, I should include false information too. But this is just living up to the fake new era)
I think only villain stans push that ârumors ruin lives!â bullshit, but I do see a lot of âthe moral of mdzs is not to believe in rumorsâ posts going around, which I think really oversimplifies the actual moral by taking away the onus of people to be truthseekers. Mdzs never takes the stance of âall rumors are wrong and all gossip is bad.â In fact, many of the rumors in the novel prove to be fact. What it does, instead, is posit rumors as a jumping off point to seek the truth of certain situations, and you should either actively seek the truth of the matter or keep your mouth closed and mind your goddamn business. After all, rumors have no power if there is no action behind them, and not a single character is materially harmed solely because of rumors. Rumors arenât what killed the He clan; Jin Guangyao just used them to justify the clan extermination after the fact. Rumors didnât kill Wei Wuxian; they were spread to justify the orthodox clans mobilizing against him after the fact. And everyone who mobilizes is fully aware of the holes in these rumors but simply choose to ignore them because âbelievingâ in them suites their actions.
So the real moral of mdzs is that one should not act on rumors without first investigating the truth of them. To skip finding out the truth can lead one to immoral actions based on incorrect conclusions, and this wrong will be fully on your shoulders to bear, as if you had the autonomy to seek âjusticeâ in the name of unsubstantiated rumors, that also means you had the autonomy to substantiate them and simply chose not to. Thus, you chose to stand against morality with your actions.
Omg, I too am one of the people who got too focused on the semantics of rumors and their consequences, which you guys rightly pointed out is an oversimplification.
Ahh I think during one of the early chapters WWX says as much (this idea of rumors) or atleast the narrator says this about wwxs thinking. itâs been so long since I read the book I donât remember who says it. This is the WWX escapes with the donkey and looks for night hunt near mount Dafan (how the mountain got the name also was something to do with the rumors). He pretty much figures out what was happening by talking to people and listening to the local âgossipâ or rumors. And I do believe it was mentioned something on the lines of - talk to people, dont not investigate what they say.
I do get itâs soo early on and that we donât know all of the stakes yet. But this is the first time we see WWX on a night hunt (and we are introduced to how he thinks) as opposed to when he was in MXYs body and hand to respond to a situation he was put in and not deliberate on his part. Basically, itâs a significant detail and it gets completely overshadowed (or probably more apt is I did).
JIANG SIBLINGS AS CASE STUDY OF UNBREAKING CYCLE OF ABUSE( OR NOT BREAKING IN ONE'S CASE)
Jiang Ch*ng and Yanli are such interesting case of how kids get influenced in a broken household. One wants to break the cycle of dysfunction while another wants perpetuate it despite both of them getting hurt due to it.
Yanli grew up as the "untalented" child of prodigious Madam Yu, who saw how MARRIAGE made both her mother and father unhappy. Yet she is a woman and such she has an out in the way of marriage to get out of this house and away from her mother who constantly berates her for being "useless". She got arranged to marry Jin Zixuan, and when he showed resistance to the idea of marrying her, she did something decisive that cemented her different from her mother- SHE LET HIM GO.
She could have done what her mother did with her father. Insisting on marrying a man who doesn't like her at all. She clearly has sympathetic reasons to go through with it . Yet she let him go knowing she won't find another man worth loving again because she cannot make herself to act like her selfish mother and then blame someone else for her unhappiness. She also sees how it impacts her siblings, especially WWX, being told to his face his mother was cheap, character less person and there is hardly he can do anything about it.
She doesn't want to become this bitter person at all cost who hurts other. She gets lucky and eventually JZX finds out Yanli truly is a gem of a person , and they get married happily( however short while it lasted :( )
JC is...not thinking along the same line. He lives in the same house, sees the dysfunction and lives in it the same way as Yanli does, and instead of seeing past the narrative his mother spins, that all of their unhappiness is WWX's mother's fault somehow, rather than hers, he BUYS into it. He also thinks if WWX loyally serves him throughout his life, goes nowhere, marries no one, lives and dies for him as future sect leader, it would repair the "damage" done by WWX's mother and his father going away.
Madam Yu has basically told everyone , that everyone being in "their place" is what makes people happy and although JC can object to WWX being called a servant, it doesn't change the fact that he wants to treat him that way, keeping a man bound by chains of obligations and his conscience by his side forever because he cannot see past his mother's delusions. This is why being compared as less by his mother and others against WWX stings him a lot. His mother also told him he would be ABOVE WWX in heirarchy his whole life, he would serve HIM. So why is he more talented and prodigious than he?? why does nature and everyone remind him that he is not naturally deserve to act as WWX's master even though by birth privilege he would be??
That jealousy comes from a place of in-adequateness where he feels he deserves the place of being above WWX specifically in everything and lack of his dad's attention makes it personal for him. But as we see after WWX dies and he lives a cushy life with his golden core , that jealous insecure nature never truly goes away, it just gets redirected to other target like LWJ even ( who he cannot compete against since he is LEAPS ahead of him ). However with WWX when he was alive and when he comes back, it takes a visceral, malicious edge because WWX was supposed to only live and die for him SUBSERVIENT and yet he defected, made a name for himself, and got JZX and Yanli killed ( alongside Lotus Pier burned as far as he is concerned since like his mother taught him, in life always blame WWX and his parents when things go wrong, NOT THEMSELVES)
So whenever people act like Jiang Ch*ng had no choice but to act the way he does, he was raised this way, I always think of Yanli, who was raised the same way. Listening to same nonsense, being told same lies. Being told that every unhappiness they experience is WWX's fault or his mother's fault or his father's fault somehow. Yet she chose to be a better person because she realized happiness comes from thinking about other people's comfort not forcing other people to comfort you that his brother wanted.
I'm not gonna articulate this well, but there's this phenomenon I keep seeing on the left that I'll call "bean soup rhetoric," wherein someone fails to understand that they are not the target audience for a particular message, or just can't conceptualize why a speaker would craft their message differently to resonate with a target audience that doesn't already completely agree with them.
"The 'God Made Trans People' billboard is stupid! God didn't make me! I'm an atheist!" Okay. The billboard sits along a major highway in Kansas. We can deduce that the target audience is not youâit's the centrist evangelical Christians driving along that road who could probably be persuaded to become allies as long as we choose our words carefully and don't make them feel attacked for not already knowing everything about trans rights issues. Another one I see a lot is, "We shouldn't be talking about how right-wing legislation catches [privileged in-group] in the crossfire when [marginalized out-group] suffers far more!" I know. I agree with you. Which is why you and I are not the intended audience of this argument!
The entire point of rhetoric is to win over someone who doesn't already fully agree with you. In this case, let's say that someone is Jennifer, the moderate center-right mom in your neighborhood who doesn't really know or care about transgender issues but would be absolutely horrified by the idea of her teenage daughter having to submit to an invasive inspection of her body just to be allowed to play soccer. Tell her, "Banning trans students from sports will inevitably subject all student athletes to invasive gender-policing," or "Legal restrictions on gender-affirming care will make it harder for you to access the hormone replacement therapy you take to treat menopause symptoms," and she is more likely to question her existing beliefs and listen to the rest of what you have to say than if you lead with leftist talking points that she already has a calcified opinion about or which she thinks do not personally affect her.
Tailoring the argument to the things she already cares about does not mean we're forgetting that she has more privilege than mostâentirely the opposite, in fact. A privileged ally can be extremely valuable. Jennifer votes in every election. And so do all the other ladies at her book club, and church, and in the PTA, and those folks listen to Jennifer. There's a reason both parties were courting suburban women so hard in the last election cycle! If we can find common ground with her on this, if we can get her calling her representatives and talking to her friends and phone-banking and door-knocking and making a stink, that's how the needle starts to move. If I can convince her to take her support away from the candidates who are actively restricting my rights and throw it toward those who want to restore and expand those rights...then I'm sorry, but Jennifer is a more valuable ally to me than the people who agree that the legal boundaries of gender ought to be abolished altogether but refuse to actually do anything except complain online about how both sides are equally bad because the right is trying to force everyone to drink the cyanide kool-aid while the left keeps serving bean soup and they don't like bean soup

Psst, hey, Marilyn Monroeâs image as a freewheeling sexpot was a carefully constructed lie. The real Marilyn Monroe was a roiling tragedy and her life was an indictment of our society as a whole. She was orphaned after her mother had a schizophrenic breakdown, bounced around between foster homes where she was sexually abused, and married a 21-year-old at 16 to get out of being sent to an orphanage. Hugh Hefner published nude photos of her without her consent that were taken when she was 23 and desperate. She suffered severe anxiety and depression, which she coped with by drinking and using barbiturates, and was already a full-blown addict when she became famous in the mid-50s. Her career was one of exploitation, condescension and alienation, and she killed herself at 36. That Hugh Hefner, a man who was at best an unpleasant footnote in her life, felt entitled to be buried next to her is one more humiliation in a pop cultural landscape we should all be ashamed of.
âPlease donât make me a joke⌠I donât mind making jokes, but I donât want to look like one⌠I want to be an artist, an actress with integrity..â
 - Marilyn Monroe, last taped interview, days before her death
Can I just also say, in addition to all this, that Iâm still pissed off about the fact that Joe DiMaggio swooped in and gave Marilyn a Christian funeral before her Rabbi could return from a trip overseas? âCause that shit is fucked up.
So many men who claimed to be in love with her, and not one could fucking respect her wishes, even in death.
âIâve never fooled anyone. Iâve let people fool themselves. They didnât bother to find out who and what I was. Instead they would invent a character for me. I wouldnât argue with them. They were obviously loving somebody I wasnât.ââ â Marilyn Monroe
Also:
As one of the biggest Ella Fitzgerald fans, she literally helped desegregate her performances. Ella was not allowed to play at Mocambo because of her race.
Ella Fitzgerald: âI owe Marilyn Monroe a real debt⌠she personally called the owner of the Mocambo, and told him she wanted me booked immediately, and if he would do it, she would take a front table every night. She told him â and it was true, due to Marilynâs superstar status â that the press would go wild. The owner said yes, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night. The press went overboard. After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman â a little ahead of her times. And she didnât know it.â thisisnotmyfairytaleendingg (Source: dmvnessa)
ALSO:
In August 1956, Monroe began filming The Prince and the Showgirl, with Laurence Olivier staring and directing. The production was complicated by conflicts between him and Monroe. He angered her with the patronizing statement âAll you have to do is be sexyâ and his attempts to get her to replicate Vivien Leighâs interpretation.
She became pregnant and miscarried during the production, which heavily worsened her depression and increased her drug abuse.
A L S O , I will never forget watching a documentary about her once and, speaking about her marriage with Arthur Miller, the narrator said, verbatim: âAmericaâs Brain had married Americaâs Bodyâ. Like, literally, because he was a famous writer, he was entitled to personhood; she, being an actress, and a beautiful woman, was reduced to being âa bodyâ. I have never been more enraged with her portrayal in the media. If you want to be dismissive of her, literally come for you.
She was also chronically ill her whole life: she suffered from endometriosis with pain so debilitating that a clause was written into her contracts accounting for the days when she would not physically be able to work during her periods.
She was on courses of strong medication, had invasive surgery to try and limit the damage caused, and despite trying for a baby numerous times, suffered many miscarriages because of her condition. The miscarriages especially sent her into deep depression, since she desperately wanted to be a mother.
There is speculation that the condition may have been one of the triggers in her drug dependency as well, because when you have endo, you will take whatever you can to stop. it. hurting.
Marilyn Monroe was smart and strong as hell in a world that saw her as a sexy doll and nothing more.
Marilyn was a founding member of the Hollywood branch of the Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy and had lifelong left-wing political views with a particular emphasis on racial equality. She formed her own independent production company that survived for several years and earned a credit as an executive producer on several films. Additionally, she was not only concerned for workers rights, she acted for them, using her own fame to stop staff being unfairly sacked from several of her films. She was a loyal, kind woman and her early death remains a great tragedy. Worse still, as OP notes, is the co-opting of her image by exactly the sort of people she would have loathed in life.
