I have a theory that the valued quality of each of the four Houses isn’t really about the personality of its students.

The valued quality of each of the four Houses has to do with how they perceive magic.

Stick with me a second: Hogwarts is a school to study magic. Magic as Hogwarts teaches it can be seen as many things: a natural talent, a gift, a weapon, etc.

So how you believe magic should be used will both reflect your personality and change how you handle that power.

“Their daring, nerve, and chivalry set Gryffindors apart,” Gryffindors perceive magic as a weapon. Gryffindors tend to excel in aggressive forms of magic, like offensive and defensive spells, and they are good at dueling. But a true Gryffindor knows that the power is a responsibility, and so they must always use their powers to stand up for what’s right. They are the sword of the righteous, which makes them as good at Defense Against the Dark Arts as they are at combat magic.

Hufflepuffs believe that magic is a gift and that the best gifts are to be given away. Hufflepuffs, “loyal and just,” would naturally abhor the idea of jealously guarding magic or using it to hurt someone else. So Hufflepuffs share their magic to benefit of Muggles, like the Fat Friar, to protect the overlooked, like Newt Scamander with his creatures, or to oppose those who would use magic to torment and bully, like the Hufflepuffs who stood with the DA and the battle of Hogwarts.

Slytherins are the opposite: they believe their magic is a treasure that they have been entrusted to protect. The Slytherin fascination with purity, with advantage, with cunning and secrecy–all of which were perverted by the Death Eaters–comes from the idea that people with magic in their veins have been given something special that it is their duty to protect at all costs. And perhaps they aren’t entirely wrong: power in the wrong hands can be dangerous. And power interfering at will with Muggle affairs is a gross presumption that could turn the course of history. Though the series shows some of the worst that Slytherin can be, “evil,” is not a natural Slytherin tendency. “Cautious,” is.

Ravenclaws believe that magic is an art form, one that is beautiful and should be appreciated and studied for its own sake. If “wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure,” then asking what magic is for is useless. It’s more important to immerse oneself in magic for its own sake. Ravenclaws push the boundaries of magic to see if they can, hence Hermione’s spell experiment on the DA coins being dubbed a Ravenclaw quality, but like Luna Lovegood in the pursuit of extraordinary creatures: they can also be content to plumb the depths of what already exists.

Africans didn’t sell “their own people” because Africa has never been a homogenous land. People who were handed over to European slave traders for profit were POW and indentured servants. Those folks were loaned labor that African believed would be returned after Europeans received the labor they were looking for.

Nobody could predict what would happen to Africans once they made it to the New World. Nobody could predict the vile conditions that they would be placed in as well as the generational oppression they and their offspring would face. Additionally African nations began to cut ties with European traders once those European nations started to become greedy and hostile. When the populations of african nations started to deplete and African royalty were being kidnapped and dragged into chattel slavery there was a problem.

African people literally fought against European colonialism once they found out what exactly European were up to. Unfortunately African leaders were executed for resisting European forces and their lands taken over by colonizers. This revisionary tale about chattel slavery propagated by white people and their apologist, telling the lie that Africans share equal blame for chattel slavery is a gross attempt to warp the narrative.

It’s the same as “the first slave owner in America was black”, a small grain of truth at the center of a fistful of white nonsense. Even with all that said no one made European create race based chattel slavery. No one put a gun to their head making them strip people of their humanity, create whole economies off of that dehumanization, and implement shady systems that would uphold white supremacy for generations to come.

First off, lets get the definition of chattel slavery straight: Chattel slavery is a form of slavery in which slaves are considered actual property who could be bought, sold, traded or inherited, and one could be born into slavery. Chattel slavery is not ‘slavery based on race’ as you made it seem like it was. Africans are still victims to chattel slavery in east Africa today.

1.Africans didn’t sell their own people

Gosh is this false. Africans had a lucrative slave trade among their own nations long before the Europeans stepped in. The African nations were drawn to the slave trade because Europeans could supply them with guns and cash crops (like sugar cane)from the new world. In turn, African rulers would capture thousands of slaves and sell them to European slavers.  Historians estimate that ten million of these abducted Africans “never even made it to the slave ships. Most died on the march to the sea”—still chained, yoked, and shackled by their African captors—before they ever laid eyes on a white slave trader. Empires like the Songhai, Mali, and Ghana empires were all supported by the use of chattel slaves either stolen in village raids or bought from other African villages, and African slavery is such an ancient tradition that even the Egyptians are reported to have kidnapped slaves in village raids for chattel slavery. So no, chattel slavery or slavery in general was not brought to Africa by Europeans. 

2. Nobody would predict what would happen to Africans once they arrived to the new world

Yeah, actually, anybody involved in the slave trade could predict what would happen. The African slave trade went on for 300 years. That alone indicates that people on both sides of the Atlantic did in fact know what was going on. Many had no intent to stop it. 

3. Africans fought against slavery but the Europeans forced them to go on

This one is only partially true. There were many West African rulers who protested and resisted slavery, some even by writing letters to European kings. There were also many Europeans who opposed the slave trades, such as  Bartolomé de las Casas  African nations that benefited from slavery had little intent to stop the trade. Like I stated before, African slavers benefited vastly from the slave trade. Powerful African rulers easily could’ve ended the slave trade with force if they wanted to, since their opponent was usually just measly independent European corporations with little military support. Obviously there was a reason slavery didn’t end until as late as it did. 

4.White slaves were never slaves because they were white/white people never experienced chattel slavery

Never could you be more wrong. The Arab slave trade was made up of white christian (and yes, chattel) slaves, and persisted for centuries, even after slavery had been abolished in the Americas. The Arab slave trade also had many African slaves later on.

And last but not least, my favorite, most painfully wrong thing you have said:

5. “ Africa NEVER had race based slavery EVER.”

Four words: Jewish enslavement in Egypt. Please look a Jew in the face and try to tell them that the Jewish enslavement never happened. 

Although i appreciate your attempt to make white people look like the inventors of slavery, the simple truth is that slavery is a crime committed by all cultures world wide, and yes, even Native Americans. 

Next time you want to spew this kind of nonsense, at least try to find and include a valid source. Which may be difficult, seeing as your argument is completely false. 

Here are some options:

A Tide™ pen.

I’m a generic kinda lady. I hate promoting brands 99% of the time. BUT if you catch absolutely any kind of stain before it gets ground in, you can get most of it out with one of these babies. I’ve tested it on blood, chocolate, coffee, guacamole, pizza sauce, red wine on, on that one time i accidentally slopped some oil I was supposed to be using on antiques onto a fancy rug (also an antique but not the one I was gunning for). If you’re washing something delicate, pump it onto your finger a couple of times and gently rub it in. I’m not sure what they put in these things but I’m pretty sure it’s an arcane secret.

Dish soap

Granted, this is a little trickier for upholstery/carpet, but it can still be done using a rag, some water, and some patience. But for clothing, just pour some soap on the stain and rub it in under cold running water.

Absolutely any clear alcohol is your new best friend

You know the old “white wine to clean red” trick? Well, this is its updated sister I like to call “you, too, can use coconut rum to get red jello shot out of your nice white dress”. It’s a nice party trick. Straight vodka works even better. For every day situations involving any kind of alcohol-related spills (including markers)–and especially work situations–rubbing alcohol is ideal. To quote another adage, this one from every chemistry teacher you will ever meet, “like dissolves like.”

Hydrogen Peroxide

It can get blood out of absolutely anything, including your mattress. It reacts with the iron in hemoglobin, which breaks down the molecule, causing it to lose its red color. So make sure you’re not using a cast iron skillet to wash your period underwear in.

Vinegar

This will dissolve lime buildup overnight. Fill a bag, tie it around your showerhead, and presto. You can also use it to scrub the area around your sink and to break up any buildup in pipes. (Limeaway™ is for rich people.) 

Baking soda

This is great if you have a pet or child who peed on the carpet. Just cover the area, wait until it dries, and vacuum it up. The longer you leave it, the better it will do at removing the smell. It’s also good removing mild odors from a small space, like a fridge or a laundry hamper.
