i think its fun when people use the trope of vampires thinking that werewolves smell like shit but its especially funny to me when they say a werewolf smells like 'wet dog' . like specifically WET dog? not dry dog? something about werewolves makes them smell damper than any normal dog even if theyre dry as a bone? fascinating implications. wet werewolf vs creepy vampire. much to consider.
The thing is wolves do NOT smell like dogs, they smell less pungent than dogs, (which I guess vampires have a stronger sense of smell) but they smell more earthy and musky than dogs do. If anything werewolves should be described as a cross between soil and faintly like a ferret cage, that is if they haven't rolled around on top of a rotting carcass for the fuck of it recently.
Also vampires stink too they just don't know it/won't admit it because they're pompous bastards. Despite being beautiful and practically immortal, their bodies are still breaking down normally, they're just regenerating faster than the naked eye can see so their skin produces a lot of 2-nonenal, which is a fatty acid that the body naturally overproduces once you reach past your 40s and has an unpleasant sour odor. Also a lot of the vampires older than their 50th year of turning tend to be time-locked antiquated hoarders living in places that don't get a lot of fresh air or sunlight so a lot of their belongings tend to be musty or even slightly eaten by mildew.
So while werwolves smell like a dirty wild animal, vampires are straight up nose blind to the fact that they smell like a cross between a damp attic and a nursing home which is worse.
