Sooo maybe I’m a little late to the party, but in Witch Hat Atelier, the reason they can get casting ink is from the silver wood tree (I hope that’s right I forgot exactly what they’re called) but the story behind it was that the tree fell in love with a witch and offered its branches as wands and its blood as ink.
Now, in the manga we learn that when a Silverwood tree takes root in a witch/human, that at any comfort it can sprout and become a full fledged tree. As demonstrated with Coustas and Qifrey.
So, again, maybe I’m a little late to the party on this realization, but is the goal of having witch/human hosts for the Brimhats to make casting ink out of their blood in order to bring back the powers witches used to have before? Before as in before magic had rules implemented and things became “forbidden”.
With the shared bottle of ink Iguin gave to coco, he mixed his blood with the ink (I do believe). It was much more powerful than the ink given from the tree in the shop in Kalhn, which would mean human/witch blood + ink is more powerful than animal blood + ink.
This also only really makes sense if the story behind the ink is true and not just, y’know, a story. It also only makes sense if the trees they get ink from in places like Kalhn are there because a silverwood took root in an animal.
In summary I’m just guessing that the Brimhats are trying to make human/witch silverwood trees on purpose in order to have stronger casting ink.
