Exactly. That’s what bothers me about this idea of Elsa being “strong and independent” because she doesn’t fall in love. She never showed any interest in it. The story never brought it up. Yes, she had that line about not marrying a man you just met, but that was directed at her sister. In fact, that scene is the only time I recall Elsa ever bringing up romantic love, and none of it was in relation to herself.
If you had to praise a princess for not falling in love or getting married, Merida would be a better choice. Her movie actually focuses on that. I mean, I’d argue that Merida simply didn’t want to marry at that point in life, but still. She refuses to marry, and doesn’t. Or, hell, what about Mulan? She doesn’t impress the matchmaker. She doesn’t get a husband. But she does have a love interest, so maybe she doesn’t count?
Personally, though, I’m tired of this idea that falling in love and getting married automatically makes a woman “weaker”. In a good relationship, it shouldn’t. The problem is when a female character is demoted to “love interest” and nothing more. I don’t think that applies to any of the princesses.
