Reese has never paid attention to unity day. When she was younger, her mom used to tell her stories of how the Ark came togetherโโand was now their home that she was thankful to live in. Now it was just a memory, and Reese was thankful to be out of it. Because if she knew living on the ground would be the only best thing that's happened to her, she would've jumped out a long time ago.
So, she didn't pay attention to what Jaha was saying. She found his voice to be irritating for the most part, and instead, she set off to Jasper and Monty's tent.
She still stayed there, and for once, she had slept. Well, she wasn't sure how long she had but she felt better, and even better when she didn't have a nightmare. Her slumber was blank, and that was good enough.
Thoughโโfive or so hours of sleep were going to catch up to haunt her. Her legs felt weak as if they were made of jelly, and her head pounded every once in a while throughout the days.
Monty had shifted his sleeping area over to give Reese more room. Most days, she felt guilty for invading their space, even after Jasper reassured her countless times that they enjoyed her company.
She hasn't heard anyone sayย thatย before, not out loud anyways.
With no one in it, it felt peaceful. She had gotten out her notebook and skimmed over her latest drawings. The beautiful flower on the trip she and Bellamy took, and a bird that was pierced on a nearby tree she spotted.
But there was one she always missed. One she used to look back on everyday, but it was gone.
The drawing of her mother.
She hasn't forgotten the day when it got washed away, and she sat surrounded by the beautiful blue-purple plants that lit up the night.
She used that drawing to ground herself when she was afraid, lonely, or whenever she thought her mother's loving face was slipping away.
She knew it never would, but Reese felt like she was being ripped away from her each secondโโand the last bit she remembers and has of her will fade into the dust.
To her dismay, she remembers her fathers more clearly.
Why do the bad ones always stick?
It was as if she felt the world starting to slip away, while sweat grazed her hands and neck. Her eyelids felt like they were carrying two pounds of rocks overtop of them, and she was using her last bit of strength to hold them.
Hold on a little, Reese.ย She scolds herself.ย Stay awake.
Reese's eyes slowly adjust to a bright light, as she slowly sat up.
She looked around but couldn't see anything, just white.
She didn't remember when she fell asleep, but for once in her life, it didn't feel like she was sitting on a bed of rocks.
Bringing her hands up to rub her eyes, whiteness starts to fadeโโonly slightlyโโand Reese's vision is blurry before it becomes clear.
That's when she realizes she is not in a tent at all, and there's a faint ringing in her head.
And her heart stops when she sees her father standing above her,ย watchingย her.
All of a sudden, it was too quiet. So quiet, it was the type of silence that made you lose your mind. She couldn't hear the gun going off, or the sound of her bones cracking.
Or what seemed to be the raging shouts and screaming that escaped his lips.
He had grabbed into her shirt, hurling her out of what seemed to be a bed, forcing her feet to make harsh contact with the floor.
There's a sudden poundingโโalmost a knockโโat her head, feeling her legs immediately go limp once she lands, and before she can collapse, he grabs her shirt againโhurling her against the white walls.
The silence was replaced with ringing in her headโโthe faint sound of a whisper she thinks. Her mind was so scrambled she wasn't sure what was happening.
Crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy.
You'reย crazy. She wanted to sayโโtoย shout. To shout at the man starting to storm in front of her. It seemed way too familiar.
His steps faltered before he stopped. Raging eyes darted into Reese's.
"You didn't get the pills did you?" The man spat, inching closer and closer.
She didn't remember him even asking her to.
"You didn't get it?ย Did you?"
She couldn't back away, the wall and spall tables on each side was blocking her. He was too close to run.
"You didn't get it,ย didย you?"
"Noโโdad, please I'm sorry." She held her hands in front of her, bracing for what would happen next.
He didn't make a move, or hint he was for that matter. It just made the gun go off more as he glared at her. A glare that didn't seem human. One that could burn holes through her that belonged to some sort of monster.
"You fucking bitch!" He yells, and without warning, he grabbed onto the top of Reese's shirt, the fabric balling up in his hands leaving her lifted off the ground as the remaining fabric tugged against her throat.
She kicked and screamed as he yanked her around, his hand coming in contact with her skull which felt like it was made of glass. So fragileโโyet, she was strong.
Fight this, Idiot. She managed to thinkโโand she barely heard her screams and desperate pleas for help. To see if anyoneโโanyone, was outside their door.
He claimed a hand over her mouth as she screamed louder, kicking her legs everywhere as if they were going to give her some air.
Another punch, one to the gut, making her stomach spiral in all directions as if her body was slowly slipping away.
A distant voice calls to her, echoing against the cold wall he continued to hit her head against. Was it her mother telling her to fight?
"Reese, wake up." She tells her. But she can't, she's already dead. Earth floating outside the Ark was slipping awayโโsheย couldn't.
Her eyes flutter closed, as the pounding runs her head gets louderโโand just when she thinks she's done for, tears streaming down her face, her father's next punch makes her frantic eyes fly open with a gasp.
"You're okay, Reese. You'reย safe."
He wrapped his arms around her in an instantโโbarely giving her time to register his faceโโdrew her to his chest, and when she began to sob against his shoulder, his eyes softened as she held onto him tighter.
Only then did she realize where sheย reallyย was. It was dark, so dark her eyes are still adjusting from the bright lights. She can still hear her father's shouting, making her sob harder as if it could block them out.
God, she felt so lost.ย Pathetic.
"Hear my heartbeat? Just focus on that," She heard him mumble, the sound of his brittle voice edging in his chest and vibrating against her ear.
She no longer felt her racing oneโโinstead, the soft ba-bump, ba-bump of Bellamy's โโ and the walls in front of her eyes just cameย crashing.
A choked sob tears through her, a waterfall of salty tears she's held for so long running down her face to cause a flood. His hands gently on her hair aren't cold like usual but they're warm and comforting and she doesn't deserve this butโโ
She's lost in the embrace.
The cold was replaced with warmth, and the pain she felt in her chest when a hand brushed hers filled her with a fluttering in her free heart.
"It's okay." She hears him whisper.ย
It's not.ย She thinks.ย Not like this.ย Not for her.
He must have felt her frantically try to move away because he tightens his grasp around her, keeping Reese in place as if she always belonged in his arms. And despite her struggle, she felt thankful. Her mind was working its way against her, and Bellamy was grounding it. He knew she didn't want to move awayโhell, evenย sheย knows that! Deep down.
Bellamy continued running circles on her back. He felt Reese's tears soak the area of his shirt that her head was resting uponโโwhere he held the back of her head to let her know she could stay, lightly grazing his thumb against her hair.
Muffled sobs shook her body. Every shake to her body felt like a piece of her was being ripped away, and the only thing keeping herself from splitting into pieces was Bellamy cradling her.
She should be used to this, after countless nightmares she's had-she thinks she would be able to face them.
But they felt more real every timeโโand each time, she would cry silently and go over the drawings in her book to keep herself centered and remind her she was still alive.
This was the first time she wasn't tearing herself apart alone, and the first time she hadn't used her notebook to cope. Instead, Bellamy held her like he had done it countless times before, as her head fit perfectly where his heart was and his arms fitted around her as a perfect shield from the world. because being in his arms felt as if she was separated from it, and she didn't haveโorย wantโto go over her drawings to remind herself she was.
After what felt like too quickly, Reese had the urge to pull herself away, so that she could breathe at least. Though her chest felt like it had closed up, she needed a little space despite how grateful she was for Bellamy at this moment.
His face was so soft when she looked at him Reese wanted to reach up and touch it.
No, you don't.ย Says a distant voice. Very,ย veryย distant.
"Is it night?" She manages to say, sounding as if her words were choking her.
"Just about." He replied quietly, a faint smile forming on his face. "There's a party going on out there."
Only then did she remember it was unity day.ย Godโโdid she mention how much she hated it?
"Then why are you here instead of having fun?" She asked, curious and confused. How had he even found her in the first place, and why didn't he look like he wanted to leave?
"I'm not much of a partier, Buttercup. Besides, I was first watch. I don't think some are easy on the moonshine."
Her eyes go wide and wild.
"Why aren't you looking over the camp then!" She scolded, guilt consuming herโshe didn't ask for this.
He quickly placed both his hands on her shoulders. The action would have faded Reese flinch away because of the coldโโbut his hands felt surprisingly warm to the touch. "It's all taken care of. Monty is doing it."
"He told me you stay in their tent."
"Then why were you looking for me?"
He raised his brow humorously. "You're asking a lot of questions."
"And you'reย avoidingย the question."
He sighed softly, biting back a grin.ย His stupid grin.ย "I couldn't find you the whole day, and when the party started I wanted to see if you would join in."
She scoffed. "Yeah, I don't do unity day or partiesโโandย definitelyย not alcohol." She managed to say, the word feeling bitter on her tongue. "But I know that's not why you were looking for me."
"Oh really?" He reprimanded.
"Yeah, I can tell. You're a terrible liar."
"It's nothing, I promise."
She could still tell there was something behind his eyes, but she didn't push it.
Silence settled between them, and she saw Bellamy begin to stand up.
The thought of sitting alone in the tent made Reese feel uncomfortableโmaybe even a tad bit afraid. Without the warmth, it was like the cold was slowly freezing her and the warmth was taken away as soon as he stepped away.
The words couldn't seem to leave her lips, they couldn't.
Shortly after, Reese couldn't take being alone anymore. She wanted to cry because she wasย alwaysย okay with being aloneโโbut even after scouring through her drawings, her dad's face sucking the life out of her wouldn't leave her mind. To the point where she couldn't breathe herself.
With gunshots ringing in her ear, she stood up and ran out of the tent. The energetic buzz came as a surprise to her, teenagers still wide awake.
She spotted Bellamy not too far from the restโโcrunching on what looked like an apple.
Where did he get an apple?
She stuffed her hands in her pockets as she walked up beside him. Immediately acknowledging her presence, he snapped his head down to look at her.
"You okay?" He asked, his calm features turning a little worried.
She nodded, ignoring how her throat felt like it was closing up. Instead of trying to push away her father's face, she concentrated on Bellamy's.
"All good. I just came to see what was going on."
He looked oddly beautiful in the dark. His dark features seemed even darker, and his hair became like the sky. His eyes were so dark, Reese could see the firelight warmly dancing in them.
Sure, Reese had always seen him but suddenly, it was as if he felt different. Like his presence wasn't as heavy as at other times.
Maybe it was the cool night.
"Are you cold?" He asked, hesitantly.
No. She thought. At Least she didn't know she was.
Another shiver ran up her spine, and to her dismay, she saw the sharp bumps against her skin as a fatal reaction to the night.
She didn't remember being cold. She always was cold, every hand, everyย touchย was an ice block, shooting shivers up her back.
Bellamy had shrugged off his jacket effortlessly, awkwardly handing it over to Reese.
She didn't take it, though.
"If someone hands you something, I think you're supposed to take it." He chuckled, somewhat humorously. She'd love to read him betterโโshe really would, it's justโโshe was too out of her head to think. Her mind was swirling, and the only darkness she could see was everything but Bellamy.
She still didn't take it.
"When someone hands you something, usually they have the option to accept it or not."
Bellamy wasn't going to take her sarcasm, not her stupid remarks that made him sneerโbut couldn't help but crack a smile. So, walking forward, he jokingly throws it at her with a smirk.
The action made her lips turn slightly as she draped it over herself. Once the heaviness of the material touched her skin, she surprisingly didn't flinch, and it was stuck. Oddly, it felt warm. Like a warmth she never had and never could accept,ย ever.
As a cool breeze brushed past them, Reese softly inhaled the faint scent lingering on it. Mostly smelling of mud, pine, and smoke.
The smoke reminds her of a crackling campfire, like the one burning in the night. And the pine reminds her of the greenest trees. Evergreensโโto which her mother told her people had on Christmas.
And the mud reminds her of the rain. Or, the smell after the rain, at least.
She snapped her head to him, clutching the top of it. "Yeahโโyeah, I'm fine."
He nodded once before walking away, likely to skim the camp again as a watcher over the drunken teenagers at what they could call the ground unity day party.
The first one on the ground.
She felt her eyes linger on him as he walked away, his hands in the pockets of his cargo's and his t-shirt barely hanging against his skinโโshowing almost every inch of his broad shoulders.
She just turned to walk away.
