Opinion on art punk?
There are a lot of fantastic post-punk and post-hardcore bands that get the label art punk presumably for leaning more heavily into the original punk rock sound (Minutemen, NoMeansNo, Mission of Burma, and early Talking Heads comes to mind), but I still like them all the same. Consequently, I find a lot of art punk bands stray furthest from the punk subcultures with a few notable exceptions. So, kind of a weird term in my opinion, but I could probably figure out what bands a person likes if they told me they were into "art punk."
man this blog let me down. seriously how are you going to run a blog like this while at the same time being one of these dipshit tumblr retards who thinks their blorbo is inherently punk because "uwu i said so" yourself? how are you not embarrassed to care this much and still be a fucking idiot?
Sorry I let you down anon. You seem like a cool guy with adequate reading comprehension skills, so it's disappointing to know that I lost a potentially valuable follower in you. I will be working on how I can improve and hopefully will you back somewhere down the line.
Fave metal bands? I like a lot of upbeat/fast punk music. Havent listened to a ton of metal but I’ve been trying to branch out
I enjoy the classics like most: Black Sabbath, Slayer, Motorhead, Bolt Thrower. Of course metal and punk have borrowed from one another for decades, so it can be pretty easy to get into metal if you already enjoy punk. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal took notes from the rise of punk rock in the UK during the '70s, so early Iron Maiden and Venom had some crossover appeal in that regard. If you like the fast/upbeat stuff then thrash metal might be for you: Celtic Frost, Anthrax, and the more modern Power Trip are good ones to get into imo. There are also the crossover thrash bands like S.O.D. and Cryptic Slaughter that were more rooted in hardcore punk. And then there's grind/mincecore, metalcore, stenchcore, all kinds of -cores that fuse some kind of hardcore punk with metal in some different way. But to keep things brief, start out with the bands I named above. I'm sure there's lots of other great metal bands that punks also enjoy dearly, so I'd be interested in hearing from people in the replies.
Ai isn't punk, fuck off
This debate has been settled already.

i'll forgive the other crimes on your top 100 for putting q&a on there
Yeah I think DEVO mostly gets credit for their influence on new wave but barely within the world of punk music. We're seeing more of it now with the egg punk bands, but even older bands like the Dead Milkmen and Decedents have DEVO in their DNA. Anyone not up on Hardcore Devo needs to change that.
They don't tell you this, but you should have a healthy appreciation for both punk and metal music for a balanced lifestyle.
any thoughts on the hxc banana costume discourse?
Wearing a banana costume to a hardcore show is lame and I would discourage people from doing the same. Calling it out on stage with a microphone and inciting mob violence is far worse and reflective of the power imbalance in that moment. Danzo has a good take on the situation too (many such cases).
What other government-funded public service should we start calling punk? Does anyone have dibs on a "universal healthcare is punk" t-shirt design yet? "Pensions are punk" on a tote bag would go hard at the retirement homes.
how's this?

isnt pbs not government funded anymore and they run on donations now
Just looked it up and yeah, looks like the Rescissions Act of 2025 caused the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to be completely defunded. That sucks!
What other government-funded public service should we start calling punk? Does anyone have dibs on a "universal healthcare is punk" t-shirt design yet? "Pensions are punk" on a tote bag would go hard at the retirement homes.

Getting an X gender marker on my driver's license, not because I'm non-binary but because I'm edge as fuck.
Hobie Brown is the best representation of authentic punk culture I’ve personally ever seen in media
I feel like most “punk” characters are just visually alternative, and maybe a little “stick it to the man”, but that’s about it. They ultimately don’t stick the landing when it comes to the values the punk community has
But Hobie does!!! He backs his words up with his actions! He sticks to what he believes in, causes chaos, fights fascists, is an instigator, is anti-establishment (including the spider society), he has blue and yellow coded laces (as always these animators are amazing and did their fucking research), and he literally disrupts every scene he’s in with his art style!!
And most importantly, he CARES about his friends, which is what I think a lot of “punk” characters ultimately are missing. He’s the ultimate hype man for Pavitr and Miles, he helps Miles escape like 2 minutes after meeting him, he watches out for Gwen when she can’t go back home, he talks sweetly to Mayday when no one else is listening
Anyways I sat there in the theatre watching this chaotic SOB thinking

this blog is so funny. i listen to emo music.
people who "like" emo music basically spend their time arguing why every album actually isn't emo and that the only REAL emo music is some random 6 minute album recorded on some shitty camcorder in a one off performance 30 years ago.
and then "punks" say that literally anything and everything under the sun is actually punk and therefore good. it makes me curious on what the other characters in other "alt" music circles are like.
anyways in regards to band judging, rites of spring and gray matter? they're credited as the start of emo (moreso rites of spring) from the DC punk scene and two of my first, and current favorite bands.
second question. do you have any band recs that are similar in sound to Dystopia? My friend said it was a type of punk im not too sure. i really love the bass and guitar.
Anyway, Revolution Summer was incredibly important and more people should read up on it. Goes to show how influential D.C. hardcore was in the long run, spawning both emo and straight edge subcultures. I have heard the Rites of Spring album and enjoyed it thoroughly as a refreshing take on hardcore. I haven't listened to any of Gray Matter's stuff, but if they're anything like Rites of Spring then I'll probably enjoy it too. Otherwise I'm not that into emo, though I am privy to the various waves and landmark bands (Sunny Day Real Estate, Orchid, American Football, Touche Amore, Home Is Where, etc).
As for your Dystopia recommendations, you should check out Sea of Deprivation, His Hero Is Gone, and Fall of Efrafa. All these bands incorporated elements of sludge metal into their style of crust punk, which would become fairly popular in the 2000s. Some might call this "neo crust" but that's also a pretty wide label that can encompass various approaches to crust that were more melodic than the bands that came before. Either way, I think those bands will suit you well.
I don't mind keeping anon asks on because I can easily ignore the harrassing anons but if you send me something especially dumb off anon then you better make it count.
