Under every mid-evil town there are dungeons and dragons
The Community Forums will be shut down on October 29. Thanks to all who participated over the years!
Well this sucks.
Choosing to retire a former foundation of our community was not an easy decision, but we feel that we must adjust our communications structure to reflect where conversations about Wizards of the Coast games are taking place.
Social media has changed significantly over the last ten years, and discussions about games arenât exclusive to company-hosted forums. The majority of community conversation takes place on third-party websites (such as Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and many other fantastic community-run websites), and it is up to us to evolve alongside our players.
We encourage past and current users to retrieve any information you want to retain from the Community Forums for both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. The shutdown will occur on October 29, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. PT. We want to provide enough time for our forum members to move their content, and we recognize that given our forumâs vibrant user base and extensive history, this may take time. Any information still on the forums on the cut-off date will be deleted.
Thank you to all of our past and current forum users. You helped build our community into what it is now, and we look forward to continuing to interact with you on our many active social platforms.

Found a single word that describes rogues in a nutshell.
âCacoethesâ - [noun] an irresistible urge to do something inadvisable.
Hereâs a little random map generator thingy. Itâs got lots of settings I donât understand, but you can just hit â Randomâ until you get something you like. You can save the map as a .png!
(And then you can open that .png with MS Paint and put in the towns your players have been to in a way that accommodates the geography you made up on the fly.)
Because it's about fucking time someone wrote one of these.

While working on putting together a lot of spreadsheets and power point documents to use for reference of important information, Iâve started going through and fully reading the Playerâs Handbook for the first time. Before I relied on the first DM I had and other players to learn a lot of things. But itâs clear that reading the entire book is very helpful as Iâve stumbled upon an important gap in my knowledge.Â
A character can advance only one level at a time. If, for some extraordinary reason, a characterâs XP reward from a single adventure would be enough to advance two or more levels at once, he or she instead advances one level and gains just enough XP to be 1 XP short of the next level. Any excess experience points are not retained
I once had a player go up three levels at once because of shenanigans and he had played D&D longer than me - this was my first time DMing - so I figured he would know what he was doing and his math added up. Knowing this at the time probably would have been good.Â
On the 180th anniversary of the âGreat Moon Hoax,â learn how a New York newspaper convinced many of its readers that unicorns and winged bat-men had been found on the lunar surface.
Upon bringing an image of the lunar surface into focus, he and his fellow scientists saw elaborate basaltic rock formations and fields of blood-red poppy flowersââthe first organic production of nature, in a foreign world, ever revealed to the eyes of men.â Further observations revealed green forests and shimmering blue seas, as well as brown quadrupeds that resembled small bison. The astronomers were also stunned to find blue-tinted unicorns with goat beards and an orb-shaped amphibian that ârolled with great velocity across the pebbly beach.â
Day three treated readers to descriptions of even more lunar curiosities including erupting volcanoes and cliffs of quartz crystal. Miniature zebras wandered the green hillsides, and the woods were filled with horned bears and roving herds of reindeer and elk. Most wondrous of all was the so-called âbiped beaver,â a tailless, upright-walking creature that carried its young in its arms like a person, used fire and lived in wooden dwellings.
The last three entries dropped the real bombshell. While scanning a grouping of ruby red hills, the scientists were said to have spied a species of winged humanoids that soared through the lunar skies just as easily as they walked on two legs. The article claimed the creatures stood 4 feet tall, had orangutan-like features and âwere covered, except on the face, with short and glossy copper-colored hair.â They appeared to live a life of leisure and were observed to engage in conversationâa sure sign of sentience. âWe scientifically denominated them a Vespertilio-homo, or man-bat,â the storyâs author wrote, âand they are doubtless innocent and happy creatures.â
Not a word of that is true, but it makes fantastic fodder for adventuring.
My first real attempt at making terrain for my D&D group. Itâs some ruins out in a rainforest where theyâll find an ancient magic item that is important to the campaign. I made this mostly from foam and air-dry clay, painted and covered in little fake plants since, you know, itâs in a rainforest. The river was filled in first with glue, but the first few layers didnât dry quite how I wanted so I filled the rest with resin. I may add more, as it isnât quite as full as I want.
I decided to try my hand at creating a cube shaped map. This is just my test cube to see how to easily fold and unfold it. It contains a map inside and outside and is meant to be a dimensional pocket plane. Each side of the map has different traits and the gravity especially changes from one to the other, so Iâm using color coding to show the different changes. The map doesnât connect quite right in a few places on this practice cube and the inside isnât complete, but thatâs what these tests are for!

I havenât finished fully writing him up, but I did find a good way to create The Beast from Over the Garden Wall in D&D.
I realized, from the short glimpse we got of him in the light, that he looks a bit like a Spirit Tree from Ghost Walk. And I thought, an undead plant could be a fun thing to work with. Spirit Trees are repositories of elf and half-elf spirits. They turn into this collective consciousness inside the tree. Portions of their bark will sometimes resemble faces of elves, much like the faces on the Beast.
But what if someone wasnât so much a fan of this group mind existence? What if a branch decided to break off on his own? But without the support of the tree, he needs another way to keep his spirit fueled, especially if heâs in a forest outside of Ghostwalk. And thatâs where the lantern will come in. He lures the villagers nearby into the forest and grows a tree on them that basically sucks their spiritual energy out and the woodsman is tricked into creating oil from these trees as he is in the show to keep the lantern lit where the creatures true soul resides. Iâm thinking the lantern might be made of his own wood, but Iâm still working out a lot of details. Just some thoughts on the basis of my creature. Iâll probably post itâs stats and whatnot when I finish it if people are interested.
