32-year-old Joe Sotello from Kingsport, Tennessee, needed money and he knew the perfect victim to steal from. Or at least that’s what he thought… 52-year-old Lisa Morelock stood at just 4'11". Joe had known her for years and thought he could easily barge into her house and rob her without her being able to defend herself or her belongings.
On the night of 29 April, 2017, Lisa heard a knock on her door. She opened it to see a young woman with a “lost dog” flyer. As she went to take the flyer, a masked man stepped out from behind the wall and grabbed Lisa. This was a robbery, he warned her. “I was scared for a few seconds in there, and then momma bear kicked in on me and no, not today..” she said. As a scuffle ensued, the mask fell off to reveal that the attempted robber was Joe, a long time family friend.
Lisa then reached for an aluminium bat and started to crack Joe over the face and head. She was adamant that she wasn’t being robbed that day and she didn’t care that Joe was a foot taller than her and 100lbs heavier. He wasn’t a match for her bat, that’s for sure. Joe ran from the home while his girlfriend, the accomplice, sped away in the car. He was apprehended a short time later and was charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary. “Don’t be so afraid, if I can do it, anybody can,” said Lisa in the hopes that her story will help others fight back.
