my lungs are F A I L I N G from inhaling all the C H A R C O A L from this circle of H A T E ...
So I’m moving to a new blog. I recreated Romano, and set him up there. Some things are different, some things are the same. A lot of relationships, save his canon ones, have been reset. Unfortunately, I’ll have to drop most threads, but... That’s what happens when you start a new blog entirely.
Hope to see you all there~!
“Bear, get off Romano.” There was a snap of is fingers, and the Landseer stopped in his assault of Romano’s face to look back at his master, tail wagging excitedly. Bear gave one last lick to the Italian’s face, and he moved to sit at Canada’s feet. “Sorry about him. He misses people when they don’t come visit. How’d you even get in here? I thought I’d locked the door…”
Ah, finally, he could breathe again. But not until he was covered in dog slobber. Oh well... He’d just have to wash up later. He pushed himself up, wiping at his face with a sleeve of his hoodie. Eyes glanced toward Canada, his lips forming a thing line. When they don’t come visit... Sure enough, he was guilty. The question, however, needed to be answered. He rolled his shoulders, not quite getting up yet. “I’ve got the experience t’get past that,” he commented. “More than a human’s lifetime.” In other words, he picked the lock.
Finally, he pushed himself up, dusting off his jeans. “More importantly... You don’t seem too pleased t’see me. The dog’s more excited.”
Hades nodded, understanding where Romano was coming from. He raised a hand to create a miniature of the city they were discussing, down to its foundation. “The sharp pains I imagine are from where the foundation breaks and crack under the stress… I cannot fix this permanently, merely fill them in much like you glue a broken vase together. It should ease that.” To show his point he filled in the cracks with sediment from the surrounding ground. “However it’s the water that is the problem….. I cannot move that to my will. If I can get Poseidon move the ocean… Ah. Better yet, I can deepen the ocean bed away from the city so it remains untouched and it will lower the ocean and stop choking the city. That would stop your brothers pain for almost the same amount of time as it would prolong it. It would also keep Poseidon happy.”
The deity allowed his hand to tremble visibly, not bothering to hide any tremors now. A sad look passed in his eyes. “I cannot however prevent the sinking of Venezia without drastic measures. What I do now would prolong his life and ease the pain greatly, however, that city is destined to sink. Centuries from now with this solution. I could intervene again then and if another solution has not been conceived by then either raise the city again and defy the natural law or destroy it in an instant.” Hades continued this sad look as he gazed at Romano. “I understand this is complicated, difficult and painful. I will not rush you. Call him if you want.”
Dark eyes looked up to the sky, same sadness upon his features as he took in the sky. He turly missed his brothers even if they no longer remembered the days they were close.
Vaguely, Romano wondered just what kind of toll all this took on the god, for his hand visibly shook now. He decided to instead focus on the miniature city that had been produced, regarding it carefully. He wondered if Veneziano even knew of what hurt him so badly... Things they couldn’t even control... And even if the sediment were to fill in the cracks, who would say that it would help? The waves beat against the foundation daily, whittling away more and more of the very rock it stood upon. The traffic for what Venice was built around slowly eroded it day by day...
The Italian considered his options carefully, weighing them in his mind. He did not like the sound of either of those... As amazing as it would be to raise the city, he knew that there had to be a balance. Venice had its own destiny. A god himself had stated that, before him... He wanted to say yes. Weighing his options, he felt it was the right thing to do. But oh, in the end, it was not his choice... And Hades granted him with the perfect opportunity. Unfolding his arms, Romano glanced away in favour of fishing his phone out of his pocket. “Because you have offered, I will call him,” he Italian spoke quietly. He bowed his head slightly in respect as he flipped through his contacts. Not that it was hard to find... “Please, give me a moment.”
Ring. . . Ring . . . Ring . . . Click.
He had not prepared himself for the voice on the other side of the line. He drew in a deep breath and tilted his head back, listening for a moment as the excited babble flowed from the speaker. But he cared not for his brother’s day. There was a purpose for this phone call, “Veneziano.” The babbling continued. “Venezi— Veneziano.” The babbling stopped with a questioning hum. A quick glance to the deity, and Romano was speaking with his brother, switching his language to Italian with ease. He spoke of his encounter, explaining in detail only to find that his sibling knew exactly who he spoke of. Funny... He had never heard of him from his brother’s lips before... Nonetheless, he continued, until finally, he brought up the offer.
Silence. A name in the form of a question. More silence in answer.
Romano breathed out a sigh, and spoke again, only to be cut off. A few hastened words, he heard. And there he was, debating. Speaking quickly in Italian, the brothers argued back and forth on the matter, each proposing their own side. Romano’s heart pounded in his chest, threatening to burst from it. As the conversation continued, he could feel himself growing numb, feel his body begin to tremble, feel the blood drain from his face. He stumbled on words, he even found himself begging his brother to reconsider.
Until finally, there was a revelation. Drawing himself up, Romano breathed out a shaky sigh. He gave in. Bid his farewell. Pulled the phone away. And pressed end.
For a moment, he could not speak, could not look up from his phone. He couldn’t feel the heart beat within his chest, couldn’t bear to even move. His mind was void of thoughts, his entire body numb. He didn’t know how to feel, didn’t know how to act. Didn’t know what to say.
“He declined the offer.” His voice was hollow. Monotonous. After for a silent moment, he added nothing more. A chuckle broke that silence, his shoulders trembling. “He declined it. Despite... Despite... everything... he...” He grit his teeth, his fingers tightening on the phone. “God DAMNIT!!” His knees were trembling, and just like that, his whole world ripped out from underneath him. He found himself unable to stand, falling to his knees. He held the mobile in one hand as he swung at the ground with another. “God fucKING DAMNIT Veneziano!!”
“The one goddamn chance you had, and you fucking threw it away! You goddamn fucking IDIOT!!” Even sitting here in public, he could not hold back the tears that fell, the desperation and despair that flowed through him. He wanted to scream. But God, he couldn’t... He couldn't find the strength to, through his trembling body. Italian profanity slipped past his lips, before they silenced themselves. He sat back on the balls of his feet, using his knees for extra support, and wrapped his arms around himself.
Veneziano could have prolonged his life. But instead, he had chosen not to. Simply for the fear of watching others die before him.

The god merely listened to the brunette, taking in the words calmly. As the man spoke Hades allowed his eyes to close, letting the entire world cascade into his mind, body trembling lightly at the feeling. He could feel each scrape of the tectonic plates moving against each other, every tremor in the earth moving through his frame in a twitch. All the functions of the earth connected to him easily. It took only a moment to pin point what he wanted to know more about and hummed lightly. It was a natural process that he could not halt indefinitely but he could slow drastically. Especially if he could convince his own brother to aide him.
“… I see the problem… The problem with the city of Venezia…. I cannot solve it but I can slow it.” Hades opened his eyes slowly, still seemingly far away. He was still connected to the city. “I want to propose something to you… I can slow the movement of the land under your brother’s city, his very heart. I can even provide a stronger bedrock for the city to rest upon and ask my own brother to pull the ocean away some.” His body shook again minutely as more of the earth moved. “But, it will only buy your brother time, many more years than he has currently. I cannot stop what is happening for good, nothing can.” Dark eyes stared straight into Romano’s, allowing him to see there was no lie. “Would you like me to do this even if I can not guarantee how it will affect your brother in the future?“ Seeing how dearly this man wanted to aide his brother struck something deep in the god that he had made himself numb too thousands of years ago. It was why he was offering his help.
He couldn’t breathe. He could only stare in disbelief at the words the god spoke, at the way he presented himself. Could he trust the word of Hades...? Lord of the Underworld...? At what price would there be to pay? His thoughts, his mind, his memories flashed back to the many times he had seen his brother collapse, to the screams that would rip through his very being. He could not even imagine the kind of pain behind it all... To think it would all stop, even for a few more hundred years... Was it really possible? He wanted to say yes, right then and there. Yet he stood still, transfixed, silent.
The screams echoed in his mind, providing him with an answer. Would they, too, stop...? His lips formed a thin line as his brows furrowed. He had to think this through carefully. He had to choose what was best, for Veneziano. Not for himself. God, if only he could call him right now... His fingers tightened on the phone, but he forced himself to let go, withdraw his hand from his pocket. “If you can’t guarantee how it’ll affect him in the future, how can you know how it’ll affect him now?” he questioned cautiously. No, the god needed more information than that. Carefully crossing his arms, the Italian tilted his head. “It’s not as simple as that.”
“The sinking of Venezia takes a bigger toll on my brother than I cared to explain. But maybe it’s a bit... necessary. He isn’t simply fading. It’s downright tearing him to pieces.” He couldn’t say, for sure, just what it was. But god, those screams... “He’s collapsed multiple times. Clutches his chest, screams bloody murder. Fainted during the attacks on more than one occasion. He barely knows up from down.” His gaze hardened, calculative. “He’s not just destined to fade away, just like that. If that were the case, I wouldn’t worry so much. I would say ‘yes’ right away. My problem is his pain.” He chose his next question carefully, “If you prolong my brother’s life, will you prolong his pain, too?”
“… I do not control either. I was personally unaware of nations until Gilbert met me. As he explained it to me, your strength is tied to your people is it not? I do not control living beings, merely the lands they tread upon.” The look in Romano’s eyes made the deity curious and he looked at him with intrigue. Deciding to venture a guess he quietly spoke out his query. “… Someone close to you is weakening are they not? You may try to hide it but I am in tune to fear, mortals cannot look upon me for that reason. I show their worst fears…” Hades held no judgement of Romano, no pity, nothing showed upon his face aside from a small frown. “That is why you asked such a question yes?”
So there would be no saving him... Or rather, this guy couldn’t do anything about it. Romano’s lips formed a thin line at the realisation, and his fingers loosened their hold. Would there really be no hope...? In the next few years, would he be lost forever...? Romano prayed it would not be true. His breath stilled, however, at the words spoken. He was that easy to read, huh? Guess he couldn't hide it from a deity. No matter how hard he tried. Eyes flicked away, and he found himself unable to speak, even as Hades finished his words.
Slowly, he nodded, fingers relinquishing their hold on the hidden device. “My brother,” he answered quietly, as though there would be another listening, “He sinks, just as the city he was born after does.” It felt so foreign to be speaking of it. But he could not turn away from the truth when it stared at him right in the face... It struck his heart and invaded his mind, and he could not fight it. “You’re right. Most of us are tied to our people. Not just the land. But when there are two representations of the same land, the same people, what’s t’become of one of them? Eventually, one will grow t’be stronger than the other. One will triumph. The other will fall.” His voice didn’t even sound to be his own. It was far too quiet, almost remorseful. “Veneziano was born the day the first bell tolled in the floating city of Venezia. He will die the moment they strike their last chime.”
Romano glanced up, a troubled expression taking over. “I am Romano. Personification of Rome. The heart of Italy. I will triumph. He will fall.” And yet, he was the eldest of his brothers... Funny how fate loved to throw such terrible curve balls at those who lived well beyond the years of mortal men... “I have lived well over two thousand years. He, over five hundred years less than that. He is loved by many, and is the face that comes to mind when one says, ‘Italy.’ Yet he’s fated t’die before I do.” He sucked in a breath, and straightened his back. “So of course I would ask. He is not deserving of that kind of pain. Is it really that wrong of me t’try to find a way around it?”
[ He was so caught up with scolding his dog that he didn’t even notice the figure in his living room ]… [ he slowly turned his head, staring directly at him ] … yeah. Long time, no see. [ his expression changed to that of a frown mixed with mild disbelief ]
[ having been sort of acknowledged, Bear attempt to jump on Romano ]
Well then. That was unexpected. And... rather awkward... God, he should have planned this better... Too busy with mentally cursing himself, Romano didn’t even notice the dog leaping toward him. Not until it was too late. A shout, a smash, and a holler later, and Romano found himself on the floor, with the large beast atop him. “Yeah, yeah, okay, hi to you, too! Jeeze, calm down, will ya?!”
And there the dog went, crushing his lungs. “Augh— Canada— Help— Can’t— Breathe—” He deserved it, really.
[ Bear continues to bounce around excitedly, nearly knocking over a lamp with his tail in the process. ] [ at this point, Canada’s mildly annoyed, making a pro catch to save the lamp from sure destruction ] BEAR. What on earth has gotten into you today?
{ and freeze. nope, this wasn’t supposed to happen } Uh... { and slowly turn to offer a lopsided, nervous smile }
Hey there... Bucaneve... Uh, long time no see, ah?
A smile was the only the thing that greeted the other’s body language and tone. He had all right to be both defensive and skeptical of the dark deity. A low, soft chuckle escaped his throat at being spared the long version of the other’s name. This young man was truly entertaining at least. “I have met another. Though his presence is by far weaker than yours. You are both tied to the land which happens to be my domain so I am glad my assumption of you was correct. As for the country, I am sure you are wondering who he is. The former kingdom of Prussia, now tied to eastern Germany. Though he prefers I use Gilbert.”
Romano could feel his skin crawl at the mention of a weaker presence. At first, it was his fear that spoke, whispering the name of the one he did not want to hear on the list of possibilities. His hand, having already dipped into his pocket, slid in further to allow his fingers to curl around his phone. The urge to whip it out and send a quick message, or excuse himself for a call, ignited within him. He didn’t allow himself to. Especially when Hades continued, naming exactly who he spoke of. Right... Prussia, or rather, Gilbert, was still around... Romano’s eyes glanced away momentarily before returning to the deity.
“So you’ve proven you can sense beings of a strong power than humans.” A beat. “And sense a nation’s state of dissolving. Does that, in any way, tie t’havin’ your hand in the affairs of a nation’s disappearance?” Or even saving? Though he did not speak his mind on such a thought. His fingers remained curled around that cell phone, unbeknownst to the nation. A smiling face still lingered in the depths of his mind’s eye.

baciamimolto started following you
[ he peeks over the couch and just….. staaaaaares ][ meanwhile, very large, very excited dog is darting all over the living room ]
{ can’t find the darn remote like srsly where }
{ dog isn’t helping that’s for sure. how the hell was he supposed to surprise canada like this? damn dog’s gonna give it away }
“Yes yes of course. No need to get defensive.” Hades chuckled even as everything returned how it was before. There wasn’t even a pebble out of place. He chuckled softly before tilting his head to the side lightly. “So, you are the personification here hm? No wonder my form did not bother you… You are not a mortal man. Might I inquire your name since you now know mine?”
Ah, good... Everything was back in order... Shoving one hand in his pocket, Romano glanced around, as a way to double-check. Everything felt right... However, he had to be cautious. He was before a god, afterall. Deciding everything was to his liking, he focused his eyes back to the man, regarding him for a moment. So the guy didn’t even know his name... He supposed that was a good sign.
“You’ve got that right, at least. I’ll spare you the long version of my name,” he answered. “You’re lookin’ at Romano Italia. Personification of Mezzogiorno — Southern Italy. Is it safe to assume you’ve met another country, then?” Considering that the guy could pinpoint exactly what he was... Afterall, ‘my land’ could have very well meant very, very different things. Surely that wasn’t the giveaway.
“Ha ha, a costume. Yes of course one would believe that if they can not accept the truth. However… Gods cannot tell lies. I am Hades, ruler of the underworld.” In order to prove himself, Hades made the shadows upon the ground raise up and move about them both, the ground shifting a bit as well to form a small hill under Romano.
Welp. Being as old as he was, he shouldn’t see this as a surprise. Yet it did come to him as such. Eyes flicked around at the sight of the shadows, his shoulders stiffening. He didn’t like the way the ground shifted beneath his feet... He steadied himself by holding out his arms, bending his knees. Calm, Romano, calm...
As soon as everything was quieted again, Romano stood up straight and regarded the god with stubborn pride. “Alright. You didn’t need the fancy tricks to persuade me, but fine. Go ahead and show off,” he spoke. “I’ve seen enough shit in my lifetime, this isn’t too far of a stone’s throw for me. So mind puttin’ everythin’ back the way it was? I’d rather not have my land toyed with, thank you very much.” Being the personification of the very land they stood upon, of course Romano would be rather protective of it.
“Not at all, I was merely waiting for you to ask the proper question.” Hades chuckled as he let the illusion melt away to reveal his horns and ears. It was a nice practice to hide them. “My name is Hades. I believe you know the rest of my title hm?”
That... was unexpected. He thought that maybe, the other would say that he was joking. But, nope. There were horns, and there were ears. Well then. At first, Romano couldn’t even process what he was feeling. Couldn’t decide if he was scared, or indifferent, or what. And finally, it settled in.
“What, is this some kind of cosplay thing or some shit? Damn, they just get crazier ‘nd crazier every year... How’d you do that, ah?”
Hades merely smiled to the other. “For the simple fact that I am not human. I have no need to cut my hair if I control the elements that would dirty or snag my hair.” He chuckled and watched the other, waiting for the reaction.
Ah. So he wasn’t human, then. But Romano didn’t sense another nation... And what he was saying most certainly did not seem like something a nation would do. So if he wasn’t a nation... Then what was he?
He wouldn’t figure out on his own, he knew. “Would it be wrong of me t’ask you what you are?” he questioned.

“Heh heh, you’d be amazed but I rarely get anything in my hair.” However he did comply in pulling his long tresses into a loose hold, not pulling all of it through the tie. It was enough to life the locks from the ground.
Wow. Rarely got anything in there, huh? Sorry, weird person, don’t believe it. At the hair being off the ground, however, Romano nodded his approval. “Well, to each his own, I suppose, but it still looked too painful.”
“How’d you get your hair that long anyway, ah? I ain’t seen anyone with that long of hair in a very long time.” In fact, it was usually nations who grew out their hair to be that long and still look young... People who had hundreds of years to spare...
“Character hm? Well I have reasons to leave my hair this length. Would it make you feel better if I put it up so it no longer is on the ground?”
A pause. “Yes. Yes, it would make me feel better.”
“Then things wouldn’t... y’know... Get caught in it.” Yeup. That was his only problem with it from the beginning.
