I'm thinking about Invader Zim tonight and one thing that I think works really well about that show as social commentary is the fact that people aren't JUST stupid, even if they are very stupid. They still have a fully functional society and have found a way to make things work for them, but they're incredibly resistant to discovery and CHANGE. Even Professor Membrane is. When an alien is right in front of them they refuse to acknowledge the possibility of it or brace themselves because giving any mental space to something that gets in the way of the status quo would involve changing a lot more than just whether they listen to Dib or not. Humans are stubborn and do not like what is different, which is stupid, and I think that's a fun element of the show/something that resonates with a lot of people
