The Betsy Devos Era of Education House Bill 610 is terrifying. Please inform yourselves.

This bill will effectively start the school voucher system to be used by children ages 5-17, and starts the defunding process of public schools. In addition the bill will eliminate the Elementary and Education Act of 1965, which is the nation’s educational law and provides equal opportunity in education.

It would repeal ESSA (Every Students Succeeds Act): ESSA is a big comprehensive program that covers programs for struggling learners, AP classes, ESL classes, classes for minorities such as Native Americans, Rural Education, Education for the Homeless, School Safety (Gun-Free schools), Monitoring and Compliance and Federal Accountability Programs.

The Bill also abolishes the Nutritional Act of 2012 (No Hungry Kids Act) which provides nutritional standards in school breakfast and lunch. The bill has no wording whatsoever protecting Special Needs kids, no mention of IDEA and FAPE.

Some things ESSA does for Children with Disabilities -Ensures access to the general education curriculum. -Ensures access to accommodations on assessments. -Ensures concepts of Universal Design for Learning -Includes provisions that require local education agencies to provide evidence-based interventions in schools with consistently underperforming subgroups. -Requires states in Title I plans to address how they will improve conditions for learning including reducing incidents of bullying and harassment in schools, overuse of discipline practices and reduce the use of aversive behavioral interventions (such as restraints and seclusion).

Please call your representative and ask him/her to vote NO on House Bill 610 (HR 610) introduced by three Republican reps (now that’s a surprise!)

We miss him!

Perfectly said.

Reviewing posts from last night, looks like most of the drunk posts stayed in my head.

So my holidays were filled with ups and downs.

Ups:

Santa success (always a stress with young children)

My brother and SIL came. My children charmed them.

We went to Hamilton and ate at Duck, Duck, Goat. Excellent on both accounts.

Downs:

Dad spend Christmas in the hospital with his second case of pneumonia of the year. He’s at home now, but he is 74 so recovery is hard.

Had a student overdose (probable suicide) in the dorms during finals week. Its a small campus so even though I didn’t know him, it was really hard for everyone.

Some crap at work that I won’t go into except that, yet again, I’m probably going to get the short stick.

IN LAWS: So in response to telling them that my dad had been in the hospital began to recount everyone they knew who was dead or dying. They also wanted to talk about the growing violence in Chicago (not really a good idea) and I’m pretty sure they voted for Trump. Hence, the potential for drunk posts.

So I’m ready for something good and happy and with really nice cheekbones.

Sorry to hear about your father, I hope he is well now. I can empathize, my father is 90 and had a difficult Christmas. Did one of the drunken posts that stayed in your head concern Santa leaving you a naked celebrity under your tree. I want to know details or is that a private matter. What did the kids say. Am I the only one who thinks seeing Hamilton, after a successful Santa, would have been the highlight? Unless naked jack Robinson was under your tree, which would have taken precedence.

Concept: Miss Fisher high school AU. Phryne is the cool bad girl who’s always pissing off the administration with her social justice causes (“What do we want? Queer-inclusive comprehensive sex ed! When do we want it? Now!”) and getting caught smoking on school grounds. Mac is her recently out baby butch bff with med school dreams. Dot’s the new, shy transfer student. Mr. Butler teaches shop. Bert and Cec are Bernie bros and really pissed that they can’t vote and are also failing every class because man, they ain’t gonna be capitalist worker drones! Fuck the system!

Aunt Prudence is still Phryne’s aunt and also the school principal. Miss Charlesworthy is the supportive English teacher.

Jack, of course, is captain of the debate team, with a 4.0 and several science fair prizes to his name. He’s not sure how he feels about being assigned Phryne as a lab partner.
