I really think that they had a good childhood back then when their “family was actually happy”, before the war agenda settled in, before Ozai was firelord, before the kids started being groomed into firebending war machines, before one had to fight for their parents’ attention….

I’d like to think Azula and Zuko were loving, carefree, and happy brother and sister.

Azula might have asked for Zuko’s help in Ba Sing Se because she knew she couldn’t win and take the kingdom all by herself; she could have easily asked Mai and TyLee to help her down at the Crystal Catacombs, after all they have fought with Aang and Katara before. They could have taken them there too. But instead she asks him instead. Whether or not because of his abilities or what, I don’t know. But it’s clear here that she wants him to stay there in the Fire Nation with her. I like how she used her old nickname for him to indicate a bit of affection and care towards him. For all we know, she actually missed him after all those 3 years.

“Oh Zuko. It’s so strange how your mind works.”

“I thought I’d find you here.

“Those summers we spent here seemed so long ago. So much has changed.”

“Come down to the beach with me. Come on, this place is depressing.”

I bet they were both apprehensive about coming to Ember Island, a place that used to be a source of happiness & fun for their family, only to find that years later a lot has changed . Both siblings were having trouble trying to fit in the party: Azula with her boy issues, and Zuko with his girlfriend issues. Somehow, after he stormed off, she knew where he’d be. She knew what he was feeling. Probably because she was feeling the same thing as well: sentimental. A longing for the days when they didn’t have to meet their father’s expectations. A time when they were just brother and sister.

“There’s a simple question you need to answer then. Who are you angry at?”

I like how she leads him on, helping him understand the turmoil within himself. And what struck me even more is when Azula asks “Why?” because there’s a hint of sadness, confusion and outright concern in her voice for him.

We know how this scene goes but let me just include the photo here 😂

She knows how his mind works. She actually acts like a big sister to him here lol.

he knows that he shouldn’t use his powers for his own good and only use them when he needs to do the right thing.

He even got his own apartment in new york, his own driver license, and his grandpa’s car

He was a banished Prince, cursed to hunt the Avatar forever, he was given a ship and a crew, on his endless search for what seemed like an impossible feat.

Later on, he did find the Avatar only to have Commander Zhao try to rob him of his opportunity to get his honor back AND also tried to kill him. His own prince. Who tf does that?

Later, he was declared as a fugitive of the Fire Nation after the loss at the North Pole. He and his uncle, General Iroh, floated on driftwood for 3 weeks with no food and water.

3 weeks? With no food and water??? Can you imagine?

Finally, they hit land, only to be hunted down by his own sister.

It was actually said that Zuko really trimmed down if you compare from Book 1 to Book 2, and yet, all he could think about that day was the anniversary of his banishment.

He had to hunt for his own food and sleep on the dirty, hard ground.

Then, he traveled to Ba Sing Se with his uncle and ended up working at a local tea shop in the Middle Ring of the Earth Kingdom, full of low-middle class citizens.

He was a frickin prince; he was BORN to have people worship him and do whatever he liked; he was destined to be of royalty; to have love and respect wherever he went; He was never meant to be a fugitive. He was meant to have everything served at his feet! And yet he had to carry everything himself, he had to dress up as the Blue Spirit to steal food, he had to work, serving people tea in order to live, when he could have easily bought the whole place with his riches?

If that isn’t humbling, idk what is.

“I’ve been through a lot in the past few years. It’s been hard. But I’m realizing, that I had to go through all those things, to learn the truth.”
