Elowen had woken up with the faintest whimper, her eyes still puffy from sleep and her thumb damp against her lips. Mel, who had just finished sorting through some documents from her office, didn’t hesitate to scoop her up with a quiet sigh — as if her arms were made for this one purpose: to hold her.

“Shhh… I’m here, little one,” she whispered against her soft curls, pressing a gentle kiss to her warm forehead.

Elowen didn’t say a word. She simply nestled her face into her mother’s neck, clutching at her with those tiny, warm fingers — as if asking the world to pause just a little longer.

Mel rested her cheek on Elowen’s hair, eyes closed for a brief moment. The scent of milk, lotion, and sleep was her undoing. Meetings, emails, speeches — none of it mattered. In that moment, all that existed was the steady breathing and the tiny heart beating against her chest.
