no. 2, when I knew the grass
It took a long time.
Hills and gates and alleys
We crossed
To green and blue and so much light
Blinded,
We found that holy oneness
Fingers intertwined
On subways
Beneath streetlamps
In pastures
Summer days
When I knew the grass
The way I knew you.
Found: treehouse in Studio City, CA.Â

AMANDA It’s a kind of sad poem, though, don’t you think? I just picture this guy, alone, looking out a window at a cat thinking, this will leave too, just like the fog, and then from that, I mean, you can think of, you know, death. SABINA Death? AMANDA Mmhm. Fog, cats, death, it’s all the same. You come into this world on little cat feet, sit there for a second, shrug and pass on by.
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
A good morning for coffee & breakfast with a side of social criticism. Finished James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time. Beautiful - an excellent example of compassionate, universal art. It's about civil rights, yes, but largely, deeply, it deals with the importance of embracing difficult truths about our lives and cultivating love & empathy for others, despite all qualifying differences.Â
The food:
1 over-easy egg, with black truffle salt and pepper.Â
1 p black rice bread with 2 TBS Just Great Stuff, topped with blueberries and unsweetened coconut shreds.Â
1/2 Grapefruit grilled with cinnamon, fresh grated ginger, drizzle of agave, and coconut oil.Â
The coffee:
Cappuccino made with NYC Cafe Grumpy's Heartbreaker espresso beans, with cinnamon and nutmeg.Â
The literature:
"Life is tragic simply because the earth turns and the sun inexorable rises and sets, and one day, for each of us, the sun will go down for the last, last time. Perhaps the whole root of our trouble, the human trouble, is that we will sacrifice all the beauty of our lives, will imprison ourselves in totems, taboos, crosses, blood sacrifices, steeples, mosques, races, armies, flags, nations, in order to deny the fact of death, which is the only fact we have. It seems to me that one ought to rejoice in the fact of death - ought to decide, indeed, to earn one's death by confronting with passion the conundrum of life. One is responsible to life: It is the small beacon in that terrifying darkness from which we come and to which we shall return. One must negotiate this passage as nobly as possible, for the sake of those who are coming after us." (91)
Don't drive the 101; stretch over it. Good morning, LA.

Something very sinister happens to the people of a country when they begin to distrust their own reactions as deeply as they do here, and become as joyless as they have become... The person who distrusts himself has no touchstone for reality - for this touchstone can be only oneself. Such a person interposes between himself and reality nothing less than a labyrinth of attitudes. And these attitudes, furthermore, though the person is usually unaware of it (is unaware of so much!), are historical and public attitudes. They do not relate to the present any more than they relate to the person.

To be sensual, I think, is to respect and rejoice in the force of life, of life itself, and to be present in all that one does, from the effort of loving to the breaking of bread. It will be a great day for America, incidentally, when we begin to eat bread again, instead of the blasphemous and tasteless foam rubber that we have substituted for it.
James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time
Joe got a new tattoo on Saturday (!).
Important, to personally check in, to ask yourself "how do you feel?" 'Cause there's something about you that reacts idiosyncratically to the world; if you're not asking yourself how you feel, at each juncture, how could you know what makes you happy and what does not? How could you design a life that's gonna make that gooey part of you, that base core authentic you, fall asleep contended, warm, excited to wake up the next morning, trusting that the body and mind it lives inside will continue to act in a way that is right for it?
You are your only source; listen.
