I think a good start is pins are a really awesome nail art tool, using the head of a pin is really good for small details and lines, but be careful not to poke yourself.

Never do nail art at night, I always find if I start my nails too late I just end  up smudging them or doing a rubbish job - I don't know why and I don't know if it's just me but I stick to that rule and it's serving me well.

Buy lots of pretty colours, I always think I have too many polishes but whenever I buy a new one I'm so happy I did.

Also look at the lacqueristas subreddit, loads of people post really great designs there, and it's a really lovely community.
