I havent posted on here or on youtube for a long time because i just fell off the online side of things while i was focusing on my comp so ill fill you all in. My peaking cycle went great, i took a week off before the comp and only worked out once doing all 3 movements but at low weights, on the saturday the day before i was weighing at 102kg and i needed to be under 100kg for the class i was aiming for. I cut carbs for the entire day and ate just protein and drank water while walking around london all day, felt like shit but the next morning i weighed in at 98.7kg so it worked! I went 8/9 on my lifts and hit a total of 1038lbs in he 90kg full raw drug tested side of the BPU and i placed FIRST in my class and qualified for the national championships! Post contest i took a week and a bit off and ate whatever i wanted, back on the cycle of training now and its time to hit some bigger numbers! Always grinding!
02/03/16 Iāve been back in the UK a little under a week now and am struggling to readjust. Iām trying to get back into my regular training routine but after 3 weeks of training less frequently and at a lower intensity, itās proving to be difficult. I know it is only a matter of time, but Iām finding it hard not to get frustrated with myself when Iām not hitting numbers that I would have been a month ago.
That aside, the above photos are from my favourite gym I trained at whilst in Melbourne, called PTC South Melbourne. Iāve never been to a dedicated powerlifting gym before or used a monolift, it was a great experience and made me feel like an actual powerlifter. Everything there is competition class and the owner and members couldnāt have been more helpful or welcoming. There are other PTC gyms around Australia, so if you live there or are visiting I couldnāt recommend them more highly.

16/02/16: Cube method.
Im laying in bed watching youtube videos as i type this. Iāve just finished my first 9 week cycle of Brandon Lillys cube method and its honestly the best program i have ever done, i added 20kg on my deadlift in 9 weeks and all my weak areas have evened out to the point where they are not weak areas anymore. Deadlift was my biggest worry going into the regional qualifiers this april but after this program its turned into my biggest lift of all 3 and the least of my worries.Ā Iāve just started my 8week peaking cycle for the contest which is a russian program im following, so far its pretty good, lots of volume at submaximal weight. If you are looking for a new program i urge you to try cube, i will be returning to it after the meet. Steve

Iām visiting Melbourne, Australia at the moment, a place that I used to live back before I discovered powerlifting. I did a bit of research before I left the UK and it turns out there are a ton of really interesting powerlifting gyms here, so I headed out for the first time today. I went to Dohertyās in Brunswick which is a multifunctional gym, with a boxing area, cardio room and two weight lifting rooms, one geared towards upper body work and one for lower body, with a mixture of machines, free weights and barbells.Ā
I had a look around but spent all my time in theĀ ālegsā room, as I was hitting squats and deadlifts. They had three racks next to each other, as well as a monolift rack hidden in the corner, which I didnāt notice until Iād finished my sets! Pretty annoyed as Iāve never used one before, but I think Iāll go back there. There were two olympic platforms and enough plates to keep everyone happy, plus one wall was covered in pictures of the Austrian oak for ultimate motivation.
As far as my session went, itās been exactly a week since I last trained and itās amazing how much of a difference not lifting and not eating properly has made. Iām not in my usual routine out here and have been struggling to eat enough and regularly, Iāve tried getting to the gym before now too but other things have gotten in the way. On top of that, even though it wasnāt a particularly hot day (around 25 degrees) when your body has been used to it being winter for the last 3 months, training in heat is fucking exhausting! I hit some squats at 125kg and deadlifts at 150kg, both weights I should be comfortable with but found pretty heavy. Didnāt do any variations or accessory which I was pissed at myself for, but I need to ease myself in. Now Iāve broken the back of it Iāll train again later in the week and hopefully try somewhere different.

Steve: 8 weeks out
Im now 8 weeks out from my first meet at the BPU regional qualifier for nationals, im competing in the 90-100kg weight class in classic raw(wraps). When i signed up i was sat at around 96kg, few weeks later i am now at 99.5kg WHOOPS! Im not too worried ill do what i need for the weight to be right on the day. Anyway, tomorrow i started my 8 week peaking cycle for the contest, im using a russian program that includes squatting and benching twice a week and deadlifting once, together with assistance work. Cube was a great program for me and 100% helped and added shitloads of weight to my total, ill be revisiting it after the contest and may cut some weight too., Anyone thinking of trying it really should! As far as the contest goes im excited as fuck, i have all my gear sorted and have been given some great advice from friends who have already competed. To qualify for nationals i have to hit over a certain total, it doesnt matter where you place, you still qualify if you hit the total. My openers for it, if i hit them all LOL will be over the total so anything after that is just personal gain! New pills ive been taking for my stomach have helped me shitloads tooĀ Exciting times
01/02/15: 220kg/485lbs for a new max, slowly getting closer to the 500lbs mark. I'm not usually a noisy lifter but I needed that to get me through.

18/01/16: More Volume Week 6 of cube method and the volume and the weight just keeps going up. Itās by far the most exhausting program Iāve done, but I feel like Iām benefitting from it immensely.
The video is part of my working set of 3x5 at 160kg/353lbs, which was followed by block pulls 2x2 at 170kg/375lbs and deficits 2x7 at 150kg/330lbs AND some back accessory work. Exhausting.

Since I was a teenager Iāve tried to stay active and fit through a variety of different sports and activities; football, rugby, boxing, kickboxing, mma, swimming, running, cycling, Iāve tried most things in all honesty. One thing I just wasnāt interested in though, was gyms. Despite the fact that Arnold Schwarzenegger has been one of my heroes from a very young age, the idea of endless reps in an attempt to get shredded just didnāt and still doesnāt appeal to me. But when I moved to Norwich four years ago I joined a gym (for the first time in my life!) and thatās when things changed.
I wasnāt playing a sport at the time and wanted to find something new to get back into shape. I initially did the same boring isolation routines that most people do in a gym, until I stumbled across Stronglifts.com, which I couldnāt recommend highly enough for people starting out by the way. I instantly found heavy compound movements more fun and more gratifying and as soon as I realised that Arnie started out powerlifting and used a 5x5 routine to increase size and strength, I knew there was no turning back. If itās good enough for the Austrian Oak itās good enough for me right!? Since then I have trained stronglifts 5x5, madcow 5x5 and am currently in the middle of a cycle of Brandon Lillyās cube method.
When it comes to powerlifting Iām very much an average joe, but Iām working on changing that. Iāve been doing this for roughly four years now and am still regularly asking others for advice, reading, watching and learning. Iāve started from scratch a couple of times to adjust my form, Iāve been through injury and frustration, itās a constant learning process. I didnāt get into this to compete or try to turn pro, but the stronger I get, the more tempted I am. For now though, Iāve never enjoyed a fitness routine more.

22/01/16: SKWATZ AKA SHIT
My head went to a different gym than me today because everything sucked.
Firstly it took me about 3 years to warm up and loosen my shoulders and joints to be able to even get under the bar, got under there and warmed up with some high bar squats, which were fun. Got sick of Ā the warm ups so stuck 4 plates on and started my working sets. 3 sets of 5 reps at 115kg Everything felt like shit, the weight felt light but my body felt like a floppy bin, i had no confidence even though the weight was flying up. Got annoyed and decided to hit a few singles at 140kg, hit the first one it felt light as fuck but i missed depth by about 2 inches, which pissed me off so i set up quick and went for it again, drover it into the ground and might aswell have buried it, way too low and turned into a pointless grind and pointless waste of energy. Hit a few high bar sets at 120kgĀ Then called it a day on squats and sulked on the gym floor for a bit. Smashed out loads of acc work including leg raised, hamstring extensions, leg press and some straight leg deadlifts. The moral of this is, get your head in the fucking game because i am under the impression it was a shit session but i hit most of my numbers and 2 big singles, goes to show how much your head can fuck up your game.
SHIT Steve
11 weeks out from my first comp. 90-100kg class - raw with wraps - drug tested. Wish me luck!
Whipped the singlet out today for my heavy squat day on my cube program. It took forever and my shoulder mobility is dogshit but I hit my numbers.

28/12/15: Perseverance
I consider myself a pretty lucky guy in life, i havenāt had a hard life, i had a great childhood and young adult life so far, I have a great partner, i own my house and i dont have any debt looming over me, thats in no way me bragging at all, im just stating that life has been great to me. My one problem is my stomach issue, my undiagnosed crippling pain every day stomach issue that is currently stopping me from eating much. Im at a point where i am trying to knuckle down and get my ass in gear because i want to compete yet the past month has been terrible outside of the gym, i have to lay down after each meal due to me insides feeling like their tearing open, like i have swallowed acid and someone is punching me over and over in the gut, this is my one grumble in life, ive had this progressing for near 5 years now and hopefully i get some answers in jan as ive gone private. Despite this pain i am in the gym 4 times a week, pushing my routine trying to better myself, even if not being able to eat well at the moment means i wont get much bigger, im getting stronger and gaining knowledge and experience, squating it a 50/50 thing for me, its hard to get mentally into it as ive had bad reactions from squatting and my stomach before, ive had an attack mid set that left me basically crawling out of the gym yet im still in there doing it risking these horrible attacks. There are people out there working out with way worse things than me, im lucky to just have this compared to all the things in the world i could have, i need to keep pushing for my own sanity and to not let this win, one day i hope i can get some kind of release from it but until the doctors find what is wrong ill just keep persevering and i will compete in my first meet... Even if i crawl home and die after its done
