Good Omens Season 3: Have we beaten the horse dead enough yet?
No. No we have not.
Needless to say, spoilers ahead
Basically my thoughts can be wrapped up in... it was okay. It was just okay, ya know? I only have a few overarching thoughts that stand out and kind of umbrella all the other things I thought and felt while watching.
Primarily...
It was obviously meant to be a season, not a movie
Painfully so. Pacing, terrible. Rushed. Choppy. So many underdeveloped plot threads. I fully understand that they were under extreme circumstances and limitations with this project, but it couldn't have been more obvious that they took a 6 Episode (6+ HOURS) season and condensed it into 90 minutes. That was a horrendous choice. It needed to be written from a clean slate with 90 minutes in mind to make it work, and they didn't do that. The easiest cut? Jesus should not have been in this movie. He didn't do anything. His role was pointless. There was no reason for him to be there. The Book of Life going missing should have been the only focus. That would have left more time for a mystery to unfold and be solved. We could have seen the devolution of Michael's sanity. There could have been comedic threads with Muriel "on the case". We could have had a more satisfying arc of Aziraphale and Crowley coming to terms with how they left things, Crowley forgiving Aziraphale naturally, all that jazz, so their emotional arc didn't feel truncated. And truly, the Book of Life missing was a big enough reason for Aziraphale to go to Earth and/or seek out Crowley. A couple of other things that could have easily been cut out... The Bentley-being-owned-by-a-gangster thing. Most of Hell's scenes. I'm sure there's more. These would have been fine in a fully developed season. They didn't work in a 90 minute film that needed to be focused and clearly targeted.
The end was written for people who enjoy soulmates/reincarnation tropes
Which I do. So it didn't really bother me that Az & Crowley became humans. Human life is beautiful, and it being fleeting doesn't make it less so. I certainly don't agree with the critique that "It isn't them" etc. Because I enjoy soulmates/reincarnation tropes, I enjoy the idea that even if the memories are absent, the soul remembers. Their history isn't gone. It's just carried in their hearts, rather than their minds. I love the concept of them finding each other over and over and over in lifetime after lifetime. So that was fine by me.
That said... I don't think "Creating a New Universe" was necessary
And it felt like a bit of a disservice to everything that came before. I think they could have just reinstated the old one, minus angels/demons/interference from divinity. I don't love that they gave up on their own universe and just said "Let's just try again". This was the world they loved and fought for for so long, I wish that they would have put it back, accepting that they would no longer be a part of it. And THEN their souls were incarnated as humans. That's just me, but honestly, it seems like everyone's souls made it into the new-and-improved-edition so whatever.
Overall...
I think it is better than nothing. I'm at least glad to be able to close the book on the story. I don't anticipate a lot of re-watching of Season 3 in my future though because, ultimately, the technical flaws of the story and pacing made it somewhat unenjoyable for me, despite how much I adore Aziraphale and Crowley as characters. I look forward to the influx of fix-it-fanfic though.
Anyways! That's all for now folks. It's been fun.
