As I grow older, much older, I will experience many things and I will hit rock bottom again and again. Again and again I will suffer; again and again I will get back on my feet. I will not be defeated. I won’t let my spirit be destroyed.

She was a natural subject. She was not matter-of-fact about anything. She was different from others, from the rest of us. She was reserved, not aloof exactly, but deeply reserved. She had an elusive physical charm.

When I was a child, when I was an adolescent, books saved me from despair: they convinced me that culture was the highest of values. 

I wish I were a girl again, half savage and hardy, and free… Why am I so changed? I’m sure I should be myself were I once among the heather on those hills.
