âhe mentions him all the time to me, never shuts up about himâ
nah dude John didnât talk to Mary about either Sherlock or Sholto. This is Maryâs way of gaslighting Sherlock when they both can see what we are seeing play out between John and Sholtoââhe talks to me all the time about himââin other words, John doesnât confide in you and he doesnât talk about you either, because he doesnât trust you or care about you.
John is a stoic sort of person. He never tells Mary he loves her on screen. Heâs never physically affectionate with any of his girlfriends on screen. I sincerely believe that after the injuries that separated him and Sholto, and after the fall that separated him and Sherlock, he would just put those things in some deep dark place within himself and just flat out refuse to discuss them, which is why thereâs never any scene between John and Sherlock discussing the whyâs of the fall and the details of the two years away. Itâs done and John doesnât want to talk about it.
No, Maryâs just lying to Sherlock here to manipulate him. âIâm his wife and heâs with me and needs me and confides in me, AND HE DOESNâT NEED YOU FOR ANY OF THAT.â
I think part of this though is the Sherlock/Sholto mirror, and the fact that John does mention Sherlock all the time to Mary (as we see with Mrs. Whitney in the beginning of HLV) - not in a ~confide-my-feelings~ way but in a ~when-sherlock-and-i-were-together-we-did-thus-and-so~ way, and Mary is annoyed as fuck and we see her taking it out on Sherlock at the wedding.
So weâre getting two pieces of information here. John brings up his âexâ Sherlock all the time when heâs with Mary because the comparison is always lacking. John never had any reason to bring up his âexâ Sholto when he was with Sherlock because with Sherlock he was happy and wasnât thinking of anyone else.
