Her eyes fall to that of the young girl, a small smile on her face. Marlene was strong and so gentle at the same time – incredibly mature for her age. 

While most children would be scared easily, she was resilient, focusing on how to make the bar - her home - a better place for everyone. “Of course it was.”  Tifa’s heart swelled at the sweet thought. 

“I think…it’s time to put this little interior decorator to bed,” she mused, walking over to where they sat and picking up the child. Marlene was out, limp in her hold as she carrying her with ease, as if she weight nothing at all. “Then…you can show me how to make one.” She gave Biggs a warm smile before taking Marlene to bed. 

By the time she returned to where he was, she felt a little lighter. 

“Oh, ‘s’okay, I can--” His attempt to protest is kept soft, and dies down quickly enough when he realizes the kid’ll sleep more comfortably in an actual bed. He’d felt real lucky and honoured that she’d been at ease around him, at least enough to have chosen him as her makeshift pillow (gods know it took him ages to figure out how to convince Marlene that he’s a real pal and that she can trust him!). 

Biggs bids Marlene a silent ‘’Night, kiddo,’ as she is gingerly carried off to bed.

“So.” The materials are waiting on the table for Tifa at her request by the time she returns to his side. “What kinda flower we thinkin’? Blue, red, or yellow flowers? Not a wide variety but...”  He laughs at his own simple joke, and already his current worries are forgotten for the time being.

Reeve turns bright red at that admission, staring at Biggs for a long moment.

Then he coughs, adjusting his tie a bit, and tries to look anywhere but at the younger man.

Until, finally…

“…I wouldn’t object…”

Oh--

OH. So Reeve understands that immediately this time? 

He laughs, unabashed, a little incredulous at this particular situation. It throws the younger man off for a beat there. Godsdamn, Biggs had this elaborate plan to keep messing with the guy as usual until Reeve finally gets it but now-- ugh, so much for all the planning! 

Reeve chuckles, accepting his jacket and shooting a warm look at the older man. “I don’t do this for gratitude,” he says quietly, but smiling. “I know how much a difference a helping hand can mean, though. I wouldn’t be here now without having had one.” His father’s employer willing to extend the loans necessary, and never asking for repayment beyond the family’s needs… It’s nice to know good men do exist in this world.

“Officially, I find out Monday,” he says. “In practice, my last  two promotions have been heralded by Turks dragging me out drinking, so I imagine I’ll find out tomorrow night.” He still hasn’t figured out if the Turk drinking parties are because they like him, or if they’re protecting him from disgruntled employees who missed out.

Of course you don’t. There’s a quiet, breathy chuckle from Biggs, realizing now just how incredibly humble the man is. “Well we sure are lucky there had been someone like that in your life, who inspired you to give us a chance, too.” It reminds Biggs that he’s been in a similar situation, too. And it’s really why he’d decided to keep helping out in the orphanage... But that’s a memory he’ll have to about another time.

The mention of Turks has Biggs raising a brow in an odd mix of surprise and concern. What little he’s heard of this... elusive faction hadn’t exactly been good news. Could Reeve really be associated with them in a good way or...?

- pre-7 timeline, Biggs had a lot of trouble sleeping and relied on unhealthy doses of caffeine daily. 

- caffeine also clearly worsened his nerves but he really just needed it to stay awake during the day, esp. when he was doing work for Avalanche or just out on patrol. he ended up taking accidental naps everywhere back then.

- he’s close to Katie and Wymer in Sector 7, and Folia (already canon), Mireille and the doctor in Sector 5 (id love to include Elmyra too aaa)

- me @ myself: give him a scars/injury chart already, u kno u want sick scars littering that man’s bod

- he cannot fully use materia

- he knows how to work with materia, though, and knows how to modify weapons/accessories/items to take advantage of materia properties

Damn. The young man takes a sharp breath, partly impressed, partly out of pity as he watches Aerith disorient and slam a supposedly more experienced fighter onto the floor mat in a matter of seconds. If anyone in this room is in dire need of combat training, it sure as hell ain't the new recruit.

"Instead of florist or teacher, I feel like you should’ve mentioned your profession was actually ‘ruthless bad ass’...” Biggs is far from unimpressed, and he makes a mental note of how seemingly effortlessly the new girl could end a fight. "Safe to say we can move onto weaponry now. This way.” Checklist in hand, he starts heading out of the training hall, but not before glancing over his shoulder when hears a long groan from Aerith’s defeated sparring partner. 

It was moments like this that got Tifa through her hard days. Watching Biggs focus so much attention on something completely unrelated to a mission made her smile. It was incredibly endearing to see him making flowers while little Marlene dozed beside him. 

If she had her camera on her, she’d snap a picture. 

She was working quietly behind the bar, wiping down surfaces and cleaning up, which was whys he jumped slightly when he finally spoke. 

Leaning over the counter, she smiled softly towards her friend. “I’m alright.” I’m worried, too. They should’ve been back by now. Maybe one of the trains ran late? Her hands nervously clasped as her gaze shifted between his face and the paper flowers on the table. “What about you? We may need a garden for all of those by the time you’re finished.”

It’s painfully obvious how tense they both are right now, how heavily the worry is weighing down on them despite the smiles they share. Biggs lets loose a sigh, somewhat relieved that slumber had already taken over the boss’ kid and she doesn’t have to witness all the faking the adults are doing.

For a moment, though, Tifa’s comment lightens the mood considerably, and for that he is grateful. The hammering in his chest softens as he finishes inserting a paper stem to the bottom of a paper blossom, which he then points at Tifa with a chuckle. “That was Marlene’s idea, y’know. Make a tiny garden for the bar to spruce things up, add a pop of colour, something or other...”

His juts his chin out, gesturing at the rest of the unfolded papers and hoping for the woman to try and enjoy the origami process with him. Maybe it’ll help distract you, too, Tifa. “We might even sell ‘em to your patrons for a couple of gil? Whaddaya think?”

Biggs adored dogs and puppies, and growing up in the Leaf House he often got in trouble for saving some of his supper to feed the strays that wandered around their district. 

He knew better than to try and ‘adopt’ (smuggle into the orphanage) the dogs, though, so he instead he’d gotten some of his friends to help make some makeshift dog houses, placing them in front of the Leaf House and in some nooks and crannies of the streets of Sector 5. 

Cait prepared Reeve somewhat for working with the children, but even his little cat’s levels of ingenuity didn’t prepared him for several children at once. He’s been volunteering at the House off and on for a few years now, but more so in the last month.

It was one of his few regrets about applying for Directorship.

Reeve smiles up at the young man shooing the children away – Biggs, he believes? “Not immediately busy, but soon,” he admits. “I’m in line for a promotion, but I’m afraid that if I get it, it’ll cut down on the time I can spend here with the children.” He rises, dusting off the knees of his suit absently and in vain, and offers Biggs another smile. “I don’t… interact much with children. I’ll miss them.”

Ah. The older man’s honest response is so endearing. It makes Bigg’s heart swell a little, knowing someone outside of those who already have heavy ties to the Leaf House growing up could care this much about the kids.

“Hey now, the Leaf House is staying right here, so you can visit whenever you have time to do so.” An assuring look is sent, along with a firm pat on Tuesti’s shoulder as if it’s enough to knock the worries out of the guy. “Know that everyone here is beyond grateful for all that you’ve done, sir. Me, the kids, Folia, Mireille, and Helena. You’ll be missed real badly, too.

“That promotion, though? You should be more excited about an amazing opportunity like that.” Biggs fetches the jacket Tuesti left on a chair. “When are you gonna find out if you get it?”
