Hey so I donât know about *all* Walmarts but I know the one near me started selling weighted blankets for around $50 so comparatively inexpensive as far as weighted blankets go. They donât come in bright colors either, the one I got is grey so even that wonât contribute to sensory overload.
Executive dysfunction is a grind. I got a special coin (half dollar from my birth year) and flip it. Iâve agreed with myself that coin flips are binding. When I feel the looping and the stand-n-stares coming, I delegate decisions to the coin, and relax.
- To the Anon Submission; thank you! ~Love, Mod Gwen.
Personally, I dedicate 15 minutes to completing a task, and 5 minutes to do what I want. And I continue that process.
i have a hack that my life skills teacher taught me! if youâre in a situation where you need to make eye contact but you canât, stare at the personâs nose (like at the bottom of their nose) or like right above that space between their eyebrows. if thatâs too uncomfortable, look at their hairline! to them it looks like youâre making eye contact, but itâs a lot better than real eye contact, at least for me!
This is exactly what I do! Here are some more things: My partner is also well aware that my lack of eye contact does not mean disinterest; but one thing that I ALSO do when talking to her is I will tap on her when she is talking, and I've done that with other close people. Otherwise, I can circle in that I often stare at their eyelashes in work meetings; and their mouth otherwise. Since I have bad hearing AND auditory processing problems; the mouth is my favorite because I learned how to mostly lip-read. Another associated thing could be learning ASL if you are prone to going non-verbal / have a hard time talking without moving your hands.
How can I stop myself if I notice that Iâm picking? And finally how can I stop myself from eating/tasting my scabs and blood? I'm sorry for the long ask but I just want to stop and prevent doing anymore damage to my body. Thank you (4/4)
Hey thanks for asking such an in-depth question, Iâm sure thereâs actually a lot of people out there wondering the same things. I think itâs important to acknowledge that all of these behaviors have been building up to a point where you are in distress about not only managing them but also the lasting damage that you could be doing to your skin. I too have struggled with these problems before. For me, it was a matter of taking the step to get help from a professional. Sometimes it can be scary asking for help on such a sensitive issue but I can assure you that itâs well worth it! Check out https://www.bfrb.org/find-help-supportfor info on everything from therapists to support groups to skin scare specialists who can provide you with tools to help manage the skin picking as well as strategies for mitigating existing skin damage and protecting your skin in the future. I personally havenât had much success with fidget toys but one thing I have had a lot of success with is mindfulness training. A good place to start is trying to âride the waveâ or âurge surfingâ which is a basic mindfulness technique to help you get through moments of time where your urges to pick are intensified. There is a lot of information about this technique out there if you just google, âmindfulness, how to ride the wave.â Definitely check out the website I listed above and take a moment to reflect on how you have been feeling lately. If you are overwhelmed and feel a sense of desperation in regards to your skin picking I would urge you to seek professional help, thereâs no way that I couldâve gotten to where I am today with my BFRB without getting a little help along the way!
Please see this for the hair pulling / recent skin picking anons! I couldnât have said this any better myself. ~Love, Mod Gwen.
I did a whoops.

Why are people against Autism Speaks?
`Very little money donated to Autism Speaks goes toward helping autistic people and familiesâŚ`
â`http://autisticadvocacy.org/tag/autism-speaks/â`
In summary, the TLDR is Autism Speaks treats autism like a disease that needs to be cured and is completely funded and run by the neurotypicals. To continue, other sources have simply stated that it is a disorder instead of a disability. So Either way we are classified as less abled and there is this huge issue with the entire thing. I hope this helps. ~Love, Mod Gwen
www.roadid.com
If youâre a biker, runner, long-distance walker, or someone who for medical reasons might lose consciousness or lucidity, I highly recommended wearing an ID badge or bracelet of some kind.  Personally, I like Road ID (see link above).  First of all, their products are high quality, with durable bands and clearly engraved badges, and second because for Autism Awareness Month theyâve created an autism badge that you can buy to wear on your ID band, with 50% of proceeds being donated to National Autism Association, not Autism $peaks!
So go look into the getting yourself a Road ID. Â First of all, because itâs a good think for you, and secondly, because youâd be supporting a company thatâs doing a good thing.
Disclaimer: Â Iâm not employed or otherwise affiliated with Road ID, and they didnât pay me anything to post this. Â Iâm just an autistic person who wanted to share something that I think is a good thing.
For anyone who feels bad about stimming or feels self conscious about it, you could try knitting or crocheting. If you get soft yarn in nice colors it is very soothing, and the repetitive motion for both is very calming, like stimming is. And you could make something cool! I'm making a baby blanket right now. :)
Abilitations on Amazon has TONS of stim things such as squeeze toys in various shapes, filling textures(sand, soft or firm balls in various sizes), and surface textures(smooth, bumpy, nubby), chew toys, stimmy sit cushions with various fillings, pencil grips, special paper, and so so so much more!
If there are problems with mint toothpaste, maybe try a miswak or herbal miswak toothpaste (these are used in MENA, I used to use a miswak during the month of Ramadan every year). Also, they have cinnamon flavored toothpaste (delicious).
Thank you for this~ ! ~Love, Mod Gwen.

@ person that picks their eyebrows, I do the same thing except with the back of my head and eyelashes. (I also have diagnosed anxiety and autism) I recommend keeping small toys in your pockets to play with
Please also see the blog of the previous post! ~Love, Mod Gwen.
hack: things labeled "cool mint" usually have a milder & less painful mint flavour. i've seen this with toothpaste and gum so far, idk if it applies to anything else
Good suggestion! Tooth gel instead of tooth paste also generally has a less weird texture and will leave your mouth with less foamy residue. ~Love, Mod Gwen.
My mom and I are driving to Florida this summer, and I was wondering if you had any tips for surviving a 500+ mile drive?
Take full advantage of the stopping points. Always get up to stretch and always try to use the restroom. The 500 mile drive is going to be rough without entertainment; try to bring different music to listen to; conserve phone battery, and take tons of naps. I hope this helps! ~Love, Mod Gwen.
SO is there anything like a chew necklace but it doesn't look like a chew necklace and it isn't obviously a stim thing? I'd like to get one, but my work and school environment at the moment means i'm not comfortable carrying a thing that's obviously a chew necklace. any help would be great!! love ya
Maybe you can try to wear a scrunchy if this may work for you. Bracelets that are of similar material may work. They do make silicone bracelets and are fairly easy to find. I hope this helps ~Love, Mod Gwen.

dont get me wrong this is #mood but just try eating a piece of bread with salt. please, seriously. ok? at least a tiny bit. salt helps with nausea, bread calms the stomach acid. if you really canât face eating anything, just lick some salt like a damn elk, then wait and see if you can manage the bread. make some broth if youâre into that kind of thing. no spices, yes salt. if youâre feeling too weak and shaky to do much, just have a cup of tea with sugar (energy) and lemon (again, good against nausea). nibble on the lemon first, it will feel good, but donât overdo - citric acid on an empty stomach is a majorly bad idea. take care of yourself, youâre the only you weâve got
Nonverbal language
My sister and I have a little nonverbal shorthand language. I'm autistic and sometimes go nonverbal, and she's NT and she usually can't use words in the morning. So we have a little hum/grunt code. There's three notes: ^, -, and v (high, mid, and low), and they're short little bursts of sound. We don't need many "words" since it's mostly pointing. But our usual code is: ^ = this one? v = that one -^ = yes (uh-huh) -v = no (nuh-uh) ^- = thank you We didn't actually ever plan it out; it just sort of happened on its own.
