Authority Zero

The old state-run model said: "Obey, or we will punish you."

The modern order says: "You're free. Do whatever you want, as if we care."

And then it watches calmly, clinically, who still gets hired.

Visibility is livelihood now. If the platform turns down the volume, you can still "speak", the same way someone can "breathe" underwater - technically, barely, fatally. And you are encouraged, of course, to stay "politically correct", which is just a polite instruction to amputate yourself in real time.

And the genius is this: the softer the language, the harder it is to defend yourself.

How do you argue with "people feel"?

How do you cross-examine "perception"?

How do you appeal a "tone issue"?

How do you even say that is not how it happened, accurately, without sounding defensive, guilty, or deranged?

One of the many mysteries surrounding Authority Zero is the identity of the author, who only refers to herself as Terra². There are only two elements in common wth all the theories: the first is that the writer is a woman, and the second is that she has some long-standing connection with Eastern Europe.

In some stories, she is born in Eastern Europe, either in poverty, eventually making her way to the top, or as an aristocrat, who has faced all sorts of challenges for which being an aristocrat was no help at all.

In older regimes, to be punished was to be declared dangerous. Today, to be punished is to be declared inconvenient.

Danger invites resistance.

Inconvenience invites disposal.

Risk replaces believe as the organising principle of obedience. Hiring decisions become moral judgements without moral language. Funding decisions become political acts without political accountability. Platforms become regulators while insisting they are nothing but neutral infrastructures, blank rooms with no opinions.

Modern punishment does not break you by force.

It exhausts you by uncertainty.

This is not a handbook.

It is not therapy.

It is not an indictment of good or bad people.

It is a field report from the inside of a structure that most people inhabit without ever seeing.
