I love that, within 24 hours, I can be at a performance of Bizet’s ‘The Pearl Fishers’ at Sydney Opera House, chatting to random strangers about the opera scene in Bratislava, to dancing in a gay bar with my fiancé, to shoveling cow poo in our Queensland garden. On Saturday I also saw 'The Rabbits’, a musical composed by Kate Miller-Heidke based on the book written by John Marsden and illustrated by Shaun Tan about the colonization of Australia. On this day, while I’m proud to be Australian and believe it is something to be celebrated, I also reflect on the terrible atrocities of the past inflicted upon the indigenous people of this beautiful land. Of course we shouldn’t be ashamed to be Australian but we would all be well served to remember the great cost paid…
