anyone remember #cutforbieber and #cutforzayn. a cult of teenage girls cutting themselves to better the fate of their idol. there was something very intrinsic about it…like a bloodletting ritual. couldn’t happen today.

except, of course, that these were fully fictional narratives and rather than any literal manifestation of some generational quality of young women they are instead only a projection of such a mythology upon its subjects. a mythology reinstantiated, ironically, by OP
