Imagine Dean waking up, learning he has Sam's heart beating in his chest. He wants to die, with every fibre of his being he wants to die, because Sam is gone. But he can't. He can't kill himself, can't let a monster get him. Because killing himself would mean killing Sam's heart. So he starts eating healthy instead, all that green food Sammy loved so much. Starts exercising and watching his cholesterol, because that's Sammy's heart he's clogging up. He has to keep it healthy. All while he feels dead inside. Dead except for that living, beating, loving heart in his chest. That's the only part of him that feels alive.

What really fucks me up about people saying Sam going to the cage was some sort of redemption for his actions in season 4 is that Sam undoubtedly thought that too. Sam thought being tortured for years was repentance. Sam couldn’t forgive himself for being abused and manipulated into freeing Lilith so he endured more abuse as punishment. Do you guys think he thought that every day in the cage? That maybe Dean and Bobby would be proud of him and forgive him wherever they were if Lucifer just hurt him again and again and again. I’m going insane.
