“Do you need help with making anything? Or setting the table at all? I can definitely try. I don’t think that I’ll be very good but you know that I always try my best. And then I’ll learn and then over time I’ll be good at it. At least that’s what I hope.”  Really, Isadora was just trying to distract herself from everything that was and wasn’t happening around her. She wasn’t so sure Kairi would be as welcoming, she never got a good vibe from her and Isadora worked mostly off of vibes. “Haha, I”m not sure that talking will be very good for us. It seems like we’re not very good talkers, which isn’t a great thing. It’s weird cause we’re both very good talkers, like we can talk a lot but we can’t talk about stuff that matters. We usually only yell about things that matter, and I’m starting to figure out that it doesn’t work very well. I’ll stay though. I’m sure we can both be very mature if it comes down to it.” She was already riling herself up. “Oh, wow. I mean... I liked my boarding school. A lot better than Dover actually. There was a lot of interesting people but things didn’t ‘go down’ the way they do in Dover. Nothing weird really every did go down. Except one time someone did break all the toilets in the main men’s dorm restroom and they found out it was to cover up the killing of the school mascot, the animal one, not the human one... Anyway... Boarding school might help... But it would be a bummer for him at first. There’s a lot less energy.”

“What? Yeah, Sketchers exist. I mean, my dad has like five pairs of them. We just- I mean, sorry we just went over this. I would just give you one pair of the Sketchers. The other ones are my dad’s. He’d understand but I think he still wants some pairs of his Sketchers. Just in case. They’re just regular Sketchers, man. I’m sorry if you wanted collectors Sketchers but I don’t think those exist. You can have the baby blue. Sketchers.” 

“Yeah, well I’m decked out in hardcore metal on the day-to-day, so I think I’d be pretty prepared. Stomp with my boots and hit them with my lock on a chain and shit. I’d be super cool and dope and I’d win that fight. Not one rat bite to tell the tale. I’d take down one million, I told you. Realistically. The weak point of a rat, like any animal, is their brain. I’ll shine a light in their eyes with my phone to disorient them and then kick ‘em to outer space. Yeah, she’s trying to teach me responsibility with my items or something. Except my dad keeps getting mad that she’s tossing my socks and he has to buy me new ones. Not my issue though.” He nodded furiously, “Ooh ahh ahh. I’m down for a little Neanderthal chanting and burning some shit. Tonight? I got nothing tonight.”

“Haha, too late, Charles already gave me the worst titty twister in my life, so suck on that. Very cool, little Book. You are a big girl who would rather do drugs by yourself then interact with the outside world. Newsflash is that doing drugs and sitting in your room is still just doing nothing and sitting in your room, so try again.” He rolled his eyes and did a kickflip, “Don’t fucking drop out of school. That is not gonna be good for you. Plus, I need someone to be able to sneak out of class with. Having a dropout sister does nothing for my street-cred. It just makes this family even more of a red-flag. You know mom would kill you.” He did another kickflip, “You did not hear girls say that. You don’t talk to girls. They didn’t say that. Trust me, haha they didn’t say that. Library they didn’t.”

“Sorry, are you serious? I thought this place was gross and dirty, but it seems like it’s more than I thought. Am I really talking to a full blown actual Triv killer? I would think you’re joking, but you live in Dover, so I don’t think you have a sense of humor.”

“You’re right! They definitely could have been a little person who was hiding behind the wall to blow my mind for life. That really is the most logical explanation. The ghost one, not so much. No offense. I don’t really know. I don’t really get high. But that’s what my boyfriend says. Never seen him stand on the toilet though, so maybe he’s just misled.”

“Mm, okay, so explain it to me like I’m nineteen... I mean, a child. What is this ‘Art of the Card,’ and how is it a business? Cause I thought you just said you were collecting.”

“That seems like a real issue. Why don’t you just sleep in the class like the rest of us upstanding students. 0 tardies and 0 clue what’s going on. They might hold you back. They’ve held other people back for less. Trust me, I hear all about it. You some hacker extraordinaire? You gonna jimmy your way into the system? Please answer honestly. I want some concrete evidence that I can bring back to my aunt to make her sign student-parent-teacher contracts.” 

“What? Why would you throw the gun in the trash? Where did you get the gun? Is it not your gun?” Beatrice squinted at her, “Have you shot someone else? As long as you didn’t shoot anyone I think keeping the gun is fine.” Beatrice paused for a moment at the offer, “Yeah, I mean, I’ll take it if you haven’t shot anyone with it.” She rolled her eyes, “Yeah, it’s crazy that when a fucking psycho ex-law enforcement officer pegs you as a killer, no one looks for evidence, huh? Kinda makes you think.” She exchanged the gun (free), for the Xanny bar. She felt a tinge of doubt, but didn’t really care, “Well, don’t overdo it, I guess.” 

Asher took two, five-foot steps backwards. “Is this any better? How are little kids with cancer annoying about it? Also why do you think I’m annoying? I’m pretty sure that everyone likes me. I’m like positive. That’s my whole thing. Who told you I was annoying? Seriously.”

“Why would you tell your grandma to shoot me? Is it because I”m asking you to donate to charity and you hate kids with cancer? That’s pretty fucked up. And would she really shoot me? An upstanding boy?”

“Mmmm, buddy. You’re asking me about passing a class with 47 absences? I would be more worried about passing the entire schoolyear. What’s a parent’s signature gonna do anyway? ‘Yes, my child can get held back, thank you.’ I’ve never gotten a parent’s signature and look at me... Look at me... How do I look?”

“That’s really cool... How old are you? Do you... Do you have a job? Not trying to be rude, but... What’s the point of that?”

“But... Wouldn’t I have seen the owner? Cause they would be taller than the wall, right? Logically speaking... I guess I could just be placeboing it but sometimes when I’m in the car that my boyfriend is smoking in, he doesn’t want to roll down the windows and we sit there for ten more minutes. Has your brother ever done that? Maybe I’m just imagining it.”

“I don’t know what that means, can you tell me what that means? Like how? If I accidentally killed someone I would still say I killed them.”

“That’s... Really sad, little Book. What is it exactly that you want to do at home? Sit in your room and brood? I swear to God if I walk in on you staring at the ceiling again, I might have an intervention. Please don’t get held back though. Then I’m gonna be the super hot and cool 10 who turns into a 5 because I have a sister in the same grade as me and a fucking nerd dad.” 

“Yesterday, I saw a little dog in pajamas who went behind a wall and when he came out he didn’t have the pajamas on anymore. Not sure if I was high off second hand smoke or something but it kind of freaked me out. Can a dog take off a little crewneck?”
