Seeing for seeing’s sake has been growing alongside making art for art’s sake in order to create a cultural system for art in Thailand. Such system functions so exclusively in the exhibition area that other cultural systems cannot offer other ways of presenting and seeing art. Besides being a good witness, what else could people do with art? Who else could join them in doing it? Where else could they go to use what they have done? People don’t just come to seeing art, rather making something in order that they can live their life.

The confusion and indistinct problems of the past that were created by the ancestors. The attempt to seek for answers to find truth and understanding of complexity of the situation one is currently facing is a glimmer of hope. The line that splits between happiness and the world of tales and the madness in the present world is blurry and heavily overlapped.

The excitement and confusion in the return of wonders that are not expected to be coming back or possibly coming back.

The inhibition, moisture, temperature, decaying condition, movement, change--all come at a cost. But who will tell the price and who will pay for it?

6 months after the display in art area that the surroundings were managed and controlled as much as the constructed composition technology can imitate the natural essential conditions.

6 months of being abandoned purposelessly without any expectations. The remains that were put to death over and over again. The right way of destruction is more difficult than initial creation.

Please come join us to witness and praise the growth and the decay of the disguise and the foolishness with art and creativity.

What should we have for dinner? How should we sleep tonight? What are we doing tomorrow morning?

Media/Art Kitchen: Reality Distortion Field (BKK version) at Bangkok Art & Culture Centre, Bangkok / December 20, 2013 - February 16, 2014

The attempt of nature and culture arrangement is like never-ending politics. As time passes, therefore, all the remains of incomplete power, the landscape of reality and the appearance of a picture will be brought back through the capacity of mushrooms in order to change meaning and probably provide some helps again.

In this project, Mute Mute had aimed to farm various types of mushrooms on the conceptual landscape, the diorama full of national monuments from around the world made of shredded banknotes and textbooks, for nourishing people. But a medical lab reported heavy metal poisoning in the mushroom they grew. Then, Mute Mute invited Yonyang Soontareeya and Friends to arrange the nine kind mushroom oden soup buffet on the opening night instead for audiences’ super good health.

During the two-month exhibition, audiences can investigate this farmed landscape from outside of the cylindrical white tent via 4 monitors streaming live video from cameras on front, back, left and right of the custom built vehicle running inside to experience monuments among mushrooms at ground level as a virtual train trip or go into the tent by themselves to experience everything directly and sensually.

Media/Art Kitchen - Reality Distortion Field is a project addressing the status of media/art in the member countries of ASEAN. The theme “Media/Art Kitchen” is inspired by and encapsulated in the image of a kitchen activated by daily invention and creativity. The subtitle, “Reality Distortion Field,” is meant to suggest the kitchen, as workshop or laboratory, as a space where reality is distorted and the impossible becomes possible.

When both of us deeply gaze into each other,  the eyes could reveal even the deepest meaning. Silence will become the universal among us. The air seems to be purged from the body until life hardly could be felt.

Words could not be uttered, yet we could not remain submissive  until the end of life by keeping up searching  for what could not be told whether it exists or not; it’s so unbearable. 

What could really signify the existence of what in your mind  must be only the whisper of time that flows between us.  As soft as glistening star; impresses us all to once,  Lingering in our reminiscence, recurring in our conversation.

Later in 2016, we collaborate with the Japan Foundation Asia Center to run the project, Asian Culture Station, a gathering depot for citizens to build a sustainable relationship and to enrich mutual understanding between Thailand and other Asian nations including Japan. Focusing on arts and culture, in particular, ACS provides a co-working space for collaboration, on & off site events for people’s appreciation of artistic endeavors, and information through sets of publications and first-hand materials for further study in the region.

Conflicts of liberty still exist in its awkwardly definition of possession. Piecemeal will never perfect itself. It's just a heterotopia of disagreements.

Two collaborators have random 345 photos from their online journey in a single folder. They use a free software to merge these photos together and upload the merged photo to an online platform. The platform is used to build interactions between visitors and the artist. The visitor can selectively crop and send their cropped photo back to the artist. Then the artist repeats the process of merging the visitor’s cropped photos again and again. The final processed photo will be exhibited in two-week exhibition. In the exhibition audiences can crop the photo and buy it at 9 baht per an inch-square size. During the first week of the exhibition the artist borrows and installs people’s ordinary stuffs with the cropped photo in the exhibition room and then transforms those objects into photos. In the second week the artists replaces the ordinary stuffs with the photo of them. The objective is to deterritorialize the boundary between the original and the transformed photos and finally to dismantle the consciousness of public/private property.

ART AIDS (Thailand 2012): You Are Not Alone at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Bangkok / March 17 - May 20, 2012 (marathon on May 5, 2012)

"You are alone" is the feeling of aloneness that could rest on a positive and negative ground. This feeling occurs to everybody even to the least lonely person or to those who are constant surrounded by numbers of people.

The fundamental need for human other than basic survival needs, other than happiness, other than love, is an acceptance we need from those around us. At times, this need distort an authentic version of us to fit ourselves to walk along the paved road of society.

The need for acceptance teaches us to fear and fear has become a base in which we live our lives. The need of acceptance clouds the visibility in seeing a real reason for others to exist, and at the same time exemplify our insecurity that needs a safety home in someone else’s conceptions.

If this is a case, then we all have a disease, not just HIV infected people.

Mute Mute cooperated with BACC to arrange an open mini-marathon from the Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre to the exhibition room of ART AIDS 2012 on the 9th floor of BACC (about 2.5 km) on May, 5th. Runners wore pink t-shirts with information labels showed the wearer’s sick feelings on their loneliness. After they reached the destination, they took off and hung their t-shirts on the clotheslines suddenly.

At the installation, there’s an interactive video which will play along with the speed of the viewer who run in front of it for simulating the sense of mini-marathon.

Running is employed as an activity or inspiring event like a publicity campaign. Running is regarded as a tool of providing physical fitness, potentiality of the body; running is taken as a health indicator. Runners would know their potentiality and efficiency so they could develop their records and distance. The self-realization could happen as we run. Running for self seems to be the way to accept ‘differences’ of others and retrospectively society would realize our own competence.

Produced from existing objects to be materials for comprising under camera obscura principle (camera obscura and pinhole camera). This condition leads to the art language selection which is a current trend in Thailand in order to show the conclusion of the research to the art circle with conceptual arts. It is the same principle of sight of eyes and the basic functions of present camera.

The firstly used material is Doi Suthep Nature Study Centre, a place where music, art or exhibition are arranged and connected to another permanent exhibition building where the natural resources and royal duties are displayed. This area provides knowledge of arts and sciences supported by government and has been opened since 2001. However, this building has been left and is getting decline. It will later be renovated to coffee shop and gift shop to bring profit to Doi Suthep Nature Study Centre and reduce the exhibition area. This building probably becomes a transitional area of knowledge and trade.Another material is lens which arranges scattered light in the nature to be picture. The chosen lens is Minitar 1 of a camera Lomo LC-A from LOMO PLC, Soviet Union in 1980 which is imitated Cosina CX-1, Japan, as an order of General Igor Petrowitsch Kornitzky for Soviet residents to use as domestic camera. This camera has been used in Soviet for ages. Later, it is inspired an Austrian group to invent Lomography Culture as well as the web 2.0 in 2000. This culture is also spread all over the world, including Thailand. These help the ferment of dominant design of digital technological path of domestic photography culture.

The two materials are composed together by closing the normal entrance of the current exhibition building with a new glass wall with Minitar 1 lens at the middle of the wall. Therefore, lens is set in both inside and outside the building to create the comparison of the level of desire, according to the camera obscura principle where the light will show the picture in the less brighter side until the compose becomes the huge camera and the distance of sighting is not appropriate.

your words… my words…. have gone a moment ago after their first utterance, resurrecting in the unfamiliar bodies and gradually become other’s word flowing back through the brain’s cursor.

such transitions… ‘ME’ isn’t me… ‘YOU’ isn’t you… but the vague ‘WE’ under the same time sphere without being historically recorded.

PUBLiMAGINATION004 part2

A year after P004.1, I have gathered visitors’ thinking activities from the previous exhibition to be displayed again without any presentation during a madiFESTO2011 FALL at CMU Art Center.

The madiFESTO festival was held again at the same venue from 26 - 30 September 2011. A four-meter-long hot print paper was displayed audiences’ messages from the previous year madiFESTO 2010 exhibition in a blue halo not during five-day madiFESTO exhibition in 2011, but during the time of dismantling madiFESTO exhibitions and of installing the next art exhibition at CMU Arts Center. During five days madiFESTO 2011 exhibition, my artwork was displayed with only the title on white cut-out sticker on a white pillar along with QR Code for audiences to use their smart phones linking to the weblog’s URL which recorded production and thinking processes of this work.

madiFESTO? is a media/art/culture exhibition, held in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This exhibition has been organized annually by Media Arts and Design, Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University since 2009. This art media exhibition focuses on establishing understanding and criticizing surrounding complex issues, in both visible and invisible dimensions, that create social benefits and problems with an eye untied to a particular set of knowledge or a presentation technique. Instead, the exhibition combines cultural, art, politic, economic and social knowledge so as to create different kinds of media/arts as cultural activities that benefit and relate to the public and individuals. This exhibition is demonstrated in cooperation with academics, culturists, artists, designers, creatives, students, instructors, local residents as well as living and non-living creatures.

This media/art/design festival is about critical investigation into, question about and search for social, politic and cultural failure, mistake, deception and truth in the past, present and future amid conflicts and rapid changes in the contemporary society through various forms of demonstration.

The exhibition will be held not only at the Art Center, but also at public and non-public areas throughout Chiang Mai, Thailand with no limitation of time and space.

madiFESTO2010: PUSH at CMU Art Center, Chiang Mai / October 5 - 6, 2010

We could speak, murmur, or grumble through cursors as letters for hundreds and thousands screens at the same time easily with today's communication technologies, but how many would mind to unlock their genuine meanings? Sometimes, stream of words are scrolled off the screen apathetically, leaving their importance unremarkably disappeared. However, it won’t really be evaporated if that notion truly exists. It will remain hibernating inside ourselves, await readily to aestivate at all time. This silent revolution will soon bring your neglected "voices" back to "words" that will finally be perceived inevitably in one or the other ways.

PUBLiMAGINATION004 part1

longforntothingthathappenedamomentbefore is a simulation program of commonly known tweeting and sharing messages on social network services. The difference of this program to nowadays social network webpage is a presentation design. The program is displayed in DOS operating system in a monochrome monitor enabling users to send unlimited text- based messages from computers in the exhibition. However, the program itself creates a random interruption of monitor, tempo, and design to input messages at various error levels, including characters, blue screen of death, sudden shutdown, and etc. Later, order of characters from input messages are switched and printed on hot print paper.

A web address of the project is created for audiences to search for their previously sent messages. The more words audiences can remember, the more they likely to find their original messages. The messages do not endlessly disappear for real, but they do exist somewhere between program’s processing which creates a pathway of arts to the society.

Brand New 2010 Project at Bangkok University Gallery, Bangkok / June 28 - July 23, 2010 (special event on July 9, 2010)

CDAC is one part of Brandnew 2010 and established to reveal the unnoticed side of the policy to promote Thai GDP with creative economy. While we ask creatives to create more, why their lives get more suffering? That's the disaster we might forget to care before. Let's share your creative experiences to re-design the relationship between creatives and creative consumers.

Amidst creative industry in Thailand, it is filled with disasters especially among creative entrepreneurs.  These people have trained and strengthened their skills for many years so they can call themselves as professional creatives. They are encountering the lack of understanding in the society as a whole. Consequently, the values of their work and themselves are imbalanced with their personal investment.  Although there are some of creative economy policies from the government to relieve suffering, no one can guarantee that these policies will be equally implemented to all or how new social understanding will accept this new relationship between creatives and consumers. It takes time to change attitudes in Thailand.

mute mute is aware of these problems and eagerly attempts an urgent rescue even though we have no financial support. As a result, we have founded “CDAC” in order to relieve disasters victims who have never been paid attention from the society and those who need emergency rescue. CDAC is a network for consumers to get in touch with creatives to reveal their suffering that they might not be aware of and to help solve the problems together.

CDAC would like to invite all creatives who have given creativities to the society yet struggle with lives to share their suffering through video clip at creativedisaster.org (no longer activated). This is to communicate to those who have faith in creativity to make a donation by making a purchase survival kit” on the website.  After that, we delivered survival kits to creatives after 30 September 2010.  Besides cyber space, we were also gratefully supported by Bangkok University Gallery for temporary donation shelter during Brandnew 2010 Art Project.

Brand New Art Project was initiated by the Bangkok University Art Gallery in 2003. The project aims to encourage new generation artists to express themselves and show their works through solo exhibitions with no compulsory themes. Brand New offers the first step for those young artists / critics who are committed and wish to pursue their careers as professional artists or art critics in the future.

The means of work are not fixed but will be in the harmony with the requirement of general people in their ordinary lives. These make Mute Mute the icon of cultural representation that is not just a gathering of individuals but also a set of idea and creativity that signify the spirit of the times.

It seems too non-sense to be an essence, but it essentially is the essence of this non-sense feature! This video try to portray the conflictive existence of zap-teen culture in Thailand which conveys the way Thai mass media in this decade runs.  They do not really constructing anything essential for daily life. They keep telling us what they called essence, but it's too nonsensical, and it stimulates us to escape from every reality.

MAD Open House 2008 at Media Arts and Design - CMU, Chiang Mai / October 4 - 5, 2008

Internet users are forgetful; they easily forget a car key, a phone number or even somebody, as if their memories are damaged somehow. In present psychology, they identified this symptom as a part of Information Fatigue Syndrome. Technology era had turned from physical tools into data tools, so information becomes our new environment that runs crazily around us, and we can't evade. Everything can be digitalized especially your memory and identity. We abandon burdens of using our abilities like searching something by reading, capturing details of a glimpse, memorizing things etc. to digital tools. Abilities or organs can be gradually determined to distinguish if we don't use them. And with efficient capabilities of digital technologies, we can say that our memorizing and identities are going to disappear soon. Identities are not only how are we looked, but it's how we are too. Our existences are in danger, so let's recall our memorizing abilities with this piphilology game, Portrait of the Genius. Just memorize and re-type 100 decimal places of pi, the constant that represents almost every physical form. The more figures you remember, the more vivid your identity is on the ranking.

ฮัก: สั่น นิ่ง ไหว Hug: Sound Still Moving; group exhibition tribute to the song by Rong Suparat at Minimal Gallery, Chiang Mai / April 7 - 21, 2008

The song "Hoon-yon (Robot)" by Rong Suparat tells a story of an underprivileged child who can only see a toy robot that he wants is played in the hands of a rich boy. This is what happens everyday around the world despite many economic theories that were made to fulfill the happiness of everyone properly with their needs. When one gets what he needs, it means the other one will get less opportunity for the same thing he needs too. To be a rich boy, to play a toy or to exhibit your artworks, these all are politics. In this group exhibition, I politically took chance to join by imaging a robot from stateless children in an NGO school run by foreigners. They are the most underprivileged among all children in Thailand. They can't even walk on some area by legal reason. 

Sorn, the kid who drew his dream robot can't act as an artist in the exhibition surely. Then I bring his drawing to very young artists who had just graduated and are hesitated about their career, to enlarge with their technique. And send the enlarged robot back to install by the gallery owner. After all, I exhibited the work that I was just a co-ordinator.
