#conceptual project

I chose the theme undifferentiated. I wanted to work with creating a creature that had no gender. At first I thought if a female and male came together it would counteract their genders, creating a neutral gender. This lead me to work with trying to combine mine and my boyfriends body. I created one video that I really enjoy, we are linked by the arms which creates an awkward movement that made me think that my work is more about understanding. 

I was trying to do some research on intersex, which I found interesting because, I didn’t know much about it and because gender really defines us and we like to have a label to define ourselves, help others understand us and also make us feel like we belong. The doctors were assigning genders to the children without consent this often resulted in a boy with a small penis being surgically, hormonally and physiologically pushed into becoming a girl. They were perfectly healthy so there was no reason for the surgery other than that doctors believed they would have a better life if they were in the gender “norm”. Forcing them into a label that they don’t identify with. After speaking at the group crit, I was told to develop the strangeness of the work instead of trying to focus on the concept.

I started to make a “womb”, which is what I called it so people would understand what I was going for but I didn’t identify it as a womb just because that wasn’t what it was to me. It was “A Sculptural Form That Reproduces Other Sculptural Forms”. After my lack of skills in constructing my sculpture collapsed twice, I should have built a sculpture then built the plaster mesh and scrim around that but I just hoped it would hold it’s self up. I would like to remake it, but I’ve wasted so much materials and time on it so, I am just going to move on.
