The #Arecibo Observatory has been closed to the public for the past six months and I was privileged enough to visit the day after her reopening. You probably know her best from the movies Contact and GoldenEye. Arecibo is the world's largest and most sensitive single-aperture radio telescope, located deep in the karst mountains of western #PuertoRico. She measures 20 acres-wide, was the first to identify the presence of planets outside of our solar system, and found methane seas on Titan. She's also the most accurate measurement tool projecting near-Earth asteroid trajectories today. Aside from the reopening, this was a particular exciting week to visit. On March 2, the journal, Nature, reported that Arecibo found the first evidence of repeating Fast Radio Bursts emanating from the same location in space, between 2012 and last May/June. Only one-off locations of FRBs had been measured prior, and thus were previously attributed to singular celestial events.
