Itâs not a theory, itâs a fact. Severus Snape was a good person who made bad decisions in his life, but later atoned for them. And if you donât understand that, youâre a fucking classist, and thatâs all there is to say about it.
I respectfully disagree! there's a few things that stand out to me about snape! (also this will all be about book!snape because I still have not seen the movies, and its been a while since I've read the books so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!)
(under the cut bc this is REALLY long. Spoilers for all of Harry Potter!)
Snape is a good character. Not a good person.
He is not a good person, because, through and through, snape is a bully. All through his hogwarts years, he bullied and was bullied. The difference between Snape and James (who also did some awful things, I'm not denying that!) is that James apologised, and corrected his behaviour. Snape called Lily slurs, and was mad when she rejected him for someone else. Yes, he apologised for the slurs, but by saying that she and she alone was different. (Remember! Lily initially rejected both Snape and James! James responded by maturing, Snape responded by joining an extremist terrorist group.) There is loads of evidence for awful things he has done in school.
This continued when he became a teacher. He constantly picked on students, played favourites towards students of his own house to a gross degree, and didn't bother to actually teach. His potion book shows his potential! He could have become renowned for his work, or could have taught students the better ways to brew potions that he had discovered years ago, but didn't. He was such a bully, that he was Neville's greatest fear. Neville, who watched his parents get tortured to insanity by a witch who is still out there. And his greatest fear is his magic chemistry teacher.
Snape, to me, is someone who does good things for his own benefit. If Voldemort had not targeted or killed Lily, Snape probably would have died as one of the most loyal death eaters in history. If Neville had been the chosen one, Snape would have stayed by Voldemort's side. Imagine how Snape would have treated Harry if he was a girl and looked like Lily? I'm sure it would be a hell of a lot different.
Yes, Snape ultimately chose to betray Voldemort. Why? Because he was already dying, and didn't want his killer to win. And because he wanted to see Lily's eyes one last time. He held a grudge against someone for ten years after their death (James) and bullied their son simply for being related to them.
This section of the wiki infuriates me, because it's very biased. Yes, Snape did 'accidentally' insult Lily, but the thing is it wouldn't have been an accident if it had been towards anyone else. That's like accidentally calling your one black friend the n word, and apologising for saying it to them, but still saying it to others.
'Snape continued to love Lily on a much deeper and stronger romantic level for the rest of his life.' HE WAS A CREEPY STALKER!!!!!!!! When someone rejects you, you do not continue to attack and hate the person they chose. Snape was the first on the scene of the Potter's murder, and he stepped over the corpse of James and the STILL LIVING AND CRYING BABY IN THE CORNER to go hold Lily's body, before taking a family photo of the three of them and ripping it in half, so he could keep the half with Lily and pretend she was looking at him with love.
.... This section genuinely makes me furious. It is not a GOOD THING!!!! THAT HE JOINED A DEATH CULT!!!!! Snape is 18 at this point, he can clearly see the death eater's intentions. Also, how on earth did he think joining a fascist dictator group that discriminates against muggle-borns would make Lily like him? I want to know what is going on inside that man's head.
As for being classist... how? I really don't mean to sound rude! Please explain, I just don't get it! Yeah, Snape came from a poorer background, but so did Lily! He had a bad childhood? So did Remus, Sirius, Neville, Luna, and HARRY HIMSELF!
Snape himself is racist, and uncaring. Lupin literally lived in poverty for YEARS because of his status as a werewolf. Snape outed him to the entire school (after getting students to write essays on how to kill werewolves to present directly to him) because he didn't get an award for attempting to feed an innocent man to the dementors, one whom he refused to hear out because of a petty high school rivalry.
Yes, I do think people can change. I just don't think Snape ever did. All of his 'good' actions can be traced back to selfishness.
Oh boy, this got to be a lot longer than I thought! I'm so sorry if I sound rude, I just wanted to put this out there! I definitely missed a lot, and (partially intentionally bc I'm lazy) left out a lot of evidence, but this is a few of the reasons why I think Snape was a bad person!
BUT!!!!! He was a good character!
Snape is incredibly complex and in-depth (a little). He provides an antagonist for the first few books while Voldemort is being set up and our protagonists are learning. After that, he gets fleshed out more, providing depth to other characters such as the marauders, who Harry (and thus, the readers) previously idolised and hero-worshipped, showing that they aren't perfect!
He gives an insight as to why someone might join the death eaters. Slytherins are assumed to be evil, why bother proving anyone wrong, when the dark side is made up of all your friends and family?
He is a bad person, but everything he did was believable. He exhibits the extent people are willing to go to for 'love'(obsession), giving the protagonist that one final push at the end to succeed, and giving the reader that stab-in-the-heart at the end with his death.
Overall, I disliked Snape as a person, but I know that he plays a very important role in the story.
âAll through his Hogwarts years, he bullied and was bullied.â
False. He was bullied and he defended himself. A victim defending themselves is not bullying, and calling it that is victim-blaming. On top of that, his bullies always acted in a group. The leaders of that group were upper-class boys with powerful surnames and strong economic and social capital, while he was a poor half-blood who couldnât even afford proper clothes. You are conveniently ignoring the class analysis here, which is deeply classist. Iâll repeat it: this take erases power imbalance and systemic privilege.
âJames apologised, and corrected his behaviour.â
False. James never apologised to his victims, least of all to Severus (where did you even get that from?). Twenty years later, his friends still make excuses for his behaviour instead of acknowledging that he and Sirius were bullies. They even admit to his son that James never truly stopped, he just hid it from Lily. Amazing âgrowth,â right? Performative decency in front of your girlfriend while continuing to be a piece of shit behind her back.
âLily initially rejected both Snape and James.â
Snape never confessed his feelings to Lily. Ever. Lily didnât ârejectâ him romantically; she ended a friendship for political and ethical reasons. Please reread the books. Youâre mixing up canon with fanon.
âSnape responded by joining an extremist terrorist group.â
Itâs very easy to âgrow upâ when youâre rich. Itâs much harder when you grow up in extreme poverty, with an abusive father, and your supposed safe space (school) is where you get assaulted by rich kids protected by the system. Your analysis is classist as hell: you keep blaming the victim while justifying socio-economic abuse and power imbalance.
âThere is loads of evidence for awful things he has done in school.â
False. There is far more textual evidence of James and Sirius committing serious abuse. One committed sexual assault. The other attempted murder. Both regularly harassed people in the corridors. Want to keep going?
âand didnât bother to actually teach.â
False. Several students consider him a good teacher. Hermione Granger openly acknowledges he is a good teacher despite personal conflict with him. Ernie Macmillan also describes him as competent. If youâre going to claim youâre using the books as your source, then actually use the books, not fanfics or random wiki articles.
âHe was such a bully that he was Nevilleâs greatest fear. Neville, who watched his parents get tortured to insanityâŠâ
False. Neville Longbottom did not witness his parents being tortured.
And yes, it makes sense that a strict authority figure is a childâs greatest fear. Children often fear authority figures. I was afraid of my mother at 12 and she wasnât abusive. Snape is strict and unpleasant, but heâs not worse than several other Hogwarts teachers. Being forced into a job you hate, and losing patience with a reckless kid who constantly endangers the class, doesnât make you evil. It makes you a burnt-out adult.
âIf Voldemort had not targeted Lily, Snape wouldâve died a loyal Death Eater.â
Thatâs a fallacy. Youâre arguing with âwhat ifs.â Debates are built on facts, not hypotheticals. The facts are: he changed sides, and his role was so crucial that the Order of the Phoenix would have collapsed without him. He put his life on the line daily. Thatâs canon. Your argument is speculation.
âImagine how Snape would have treated Harry if he were a girl and looked like Lily.â
Probably differently, yes. Because then Harry Potter wouldnât look exactly like the person who abused Snape for years. That resemblance triggers Snapeâs trauma as a bullying victim. This is a well-documented trauma response. What part of this is hard to understand? Or are you being classist and ableist now too?
âThatâs like calling your Black friend the n-word and apologising to them but still saying it to others.â
Snape is half-blood. âMudbloodâ was also used against half-bloods. This is closer to a mixed-race person using a slur against another racial person within a deeply racist society. Also: he had just gone through a sexual assault. People can react badly in moments of extreme trauma, especially teenagers. Context matters.
âHE WAS A CREEPY STALKER.â
Again. F-A-L-S-E. No, he wasnât. Lily tells him she wants nothing more to do with him in fifth year. He respects that and leaves her alone. Five years later, he becomes concerned again because of the prophecy. That is not stalking. Please learn what âstalkerâ actually means.
âSnape stepped over Jamesâs corpse and the crying baby to hug Lilyâs body.â
That only happens in the movies. Not in the books. And even if it did: no one is obligated to mourn their abuser. Victims donât owe emotional labor to their abusers. But again: this is film-only.
âSnape ripped a family photo in half so Lily could âlook at him with love.ââ
False. This happens at 12 Grimmauld Place, and itâs about keeping a memory of Lily, not fantasizing that she loves him. Youâre projecting.
âSnape is 18, he knew what the Death Eaters were about.â
Eighteen is still a teenager. A poor, abused, socially isolated teenager whose only sense of belonging came from people in that cult. Radical and cult-like groups deliberately target vulnerable youth with no resources or support. This is basic sociology. Your take ignores how radicalisation works.
âJoining a fascist dictator groupâŠâ
Theyâre a terrorist cult, not a historical fascist regime. Please donât casually throw around the word âfascism.â Some of us come from countries that actually lived under fascist dictatorships, and itâs disrespectful and historically ignorant to flatten those experiences into fantasy metaphors.
âOthers had bad childhoods too: Remus, Sirius, Neville, Luna, HarryâŠâ
This is a false equivalence. None of them had Snapeâs combination of poverty, abuse, and total lack of support.
Neville Longbottom came from a wealthy, well-connected pure-blood family and, even if emotionally distant, still had material security and family protection.
Luna Lovegood had a bourgeois intellectual father who, while eccentric, loved and supported her.
Sirius Black was literally rich; his suffering was emotional, not material.
Remus Lupin had loving, supportive parents who actively protected him.
Lily came from a stable, materially comfortable home and had social support.
Snape had none of that: no money, no social capital, no family support, no adult protecting him, and active hostility at home and school. Erasing those structural differences is classist. Pretending all suffering is equal regardless of material and social conditions is deeply ignorant.
âSnape himself is racist and uncaring.â
No. Being angry that a teacher who can turn into a deadly creature is allowed near children without parental consent is not âracism,â itâs basic safeguarding. Albus Dumbledore was irresponsible for hiding that risk from parents. If I were a parent, Iâd be furious too.
âPetty high school rivalry.â
Attempted murder and sexual assault are not âpetty rivalry.â Calling it that is minimizing serious abuse protected by class privilege and institutional power.
âSnape never changed; all his good actions were selfish.â
Giving up your life to spy, accepting being hated so a plan can work, protecting a school from violent extremists, saving people who harmed you, dedicating years to keeping a child alive... none of that is selfish. Thatâs sacrifice. You can dislike his personality and still acknowledge his moral growth. Being rude and bitter doesnât make someone evil.
So no, Snape isnât a perfect person. Heâs harsh, bitter, and traumatized. But heâs not a monster. The problem here is:
you donât actually know canon,
your takes come from fanon and bad wiki summaries, and
your worldview is deeply classist and dismissive of how trauma, poverty, and systemic power shape peopleâs choices.
Youâre not critiquing the character. Youâre projecting a very privileged moral framework onto a story that is explicitly about inequality, abuse of power, and how damaged people can still choose to do the right thing.

Disclaimer: I don't support JK Rowling's views and I'm not a TERF. TERFs, DNI for you.
Sorry for ranting, y'all. I'll try to keep things quick (note from the future: be warned. I failed). Spoilers and mentions of friendship toxicity and bullying under the cut.
By the way, for this I am generally talking about regular canon. When I discuss things people think about this, the headcanons are generally assumed to go alongside regular canon to complement it. I understand that there are fix-it fics out there where everyone is happy, and while I love that, I'm talking about how JK Rowling let it play out.
Let me start with this: Severus Snape shouldn't be with Lily.
To keep to the simple stuff and the things most people can agree on first, no one "deserves" Lily. In this post, I was nearly guilty myself of talking like this, but please keep in mind: Lily Evans is not some kind of consolation prize, something given out to whoever is deemed the most worthy, the most angsty, whatever. Regardless of Snape's virtues (or lack of them: but give me a sec) he won't somehow earn the right to be in a romantic pairing with Lily. In all the stuff on the table in terms of how Lily viewed Snape, she wanted a platonic relationship. So that's part of what I have an issue with: talking about canon as if there was any part of romantic thing on the table. Lily never had a crush on Snape. It was a one-sided thing.
Now, to controversy. Let's address some common reasons for why people say Lily shouldn't have ditched Snape and why these shouldn't excuse his behavior. Keep in mind I'm talking about things that happened before Lily's death, because after death doesn't really matter to her. She's dead by then.
Snape had a bad home/school life.
That's true. But he then chose to continue the cycle of pain by joining a pureblood supremacist group and calling fellow students slurs?
2. The Marauders did some terrible stuff to him.
I really need a disclaimer here. THIS WAS TERRIBLE, AND I HATED IT, AND THE MARAUDERS WERE COMPLETELY IN THE WRONG HERE.
But this post isn't defending the Marauders, it's arguing that Lily was justified in choosing to let go of their friendship.
Anyway, this is an irrelevant excuse for why Lily should remain friends with him, because she thought this was terrible too... and then Severus screamed a slur at her when she was trying to help him. Way to go, Snape.
3. He loved Lily.
Hold up. Stop the clock.
Wut.
Wut.
Okay, this needs to be a new section. Let's call it:
Being In Love With Someone Doesn't Excuse Your Actions Towards Them
Quick story time, cause this section uses an extensive metaphor. IRL, I used to be best friends with this girl. She was toxic and refused to change.
Her excuses for why I should keep hanging out with her?
Current mental health situation.
Things just "slipped out". (Yeah, Snape LITERALLY USED THIS EXACT EXCUSE)
I was really important to her (So was Lily to Snape)
I stopped being friends with this girl regardless, because her actions harmed my mental health, isolated me, etc.
(And before someone says friendship is different etc. she had a crush on me two Valentine's days in a row and I'm unsure if she still does)
These are all excuses. Let's define that word for a second.
"attempt to lessen the blame attaching to (a fault or offense); seek to defend or justify." -Oxford Languages from Google.
Contrast with an apology, where someone actually tries to make things better. Snape constantly gives excuses. His apology comes much, much too late in the form of begging Lily. Now, with my own toxic friend, she also claimed to want to make things better.
In the case of both Snape and Toxic Friend, they'd continually insisted it wasn't their fault, ignoring the problems in the relationship and not making an effort to fix them. By the time Lily and I broke things off, we'd made up our minds. We turned away and felt good about it, because they negatively impacted our lives.
Maybe Snape was in love. Maybe my friend really wanted to be friends with me. Both are probable.
Still, neither followed through on the steps necessary for a good friendship.
Depersonification, aka Lily is a Person Not A Shiny Toy, Severus
Crack open your books, hit play on the movie, or simply recall as we all remember how Snape looked at Lily.
In the books (won't mention the movies because I didn't watch them) he looks at Lily and Harry sees "undisguised greed" in his eyes. Um...
Snape's fine with hurting Petunia, figuratively and literally.
He ignores what Lily is actually trying to say to him once she tells him what he wants to hear.
And calling her Mudblood. (Can't help myself interrupting here: I myself never 'just accidentally' call someone a racial slur. That's because I don't use them, so they aren't exactly waiting on the tip of my tongue).
All of the things he does are in there for a reason. JK Rowling is trying to unsettle us, and she succeeded. Snape seems to view Lily as an accomplishment, an achievement, a plaything to be admired.
Why?
He never takes Lily's feelings into consideration. Not once until it negatively impacts him. Look at where he comforts Lily: when it looks like they've made a mistake and hurt Petunia.
When Lily gives up on him.
And I know: there was more, there was more, there was more.
Potions homework done together.
Eager chatter between classes.
It's not black and white.
But these are the scenes JK Rowling has decided will give you the best impression of their friendship. She didn't pick tender scenes with cocoa and cookies because that isn't a theme in this friendship.
And onwards to:
They Used To Be Friends, Why Did Lily Stop Talking To Him Like This
It's hard to know what a person is truly like. You only know what people show you, and they hold back the worst of themselves at first. In Lily's first scenes, she doesn't know everything. She doesn't see the greedy looks he gives her. He is a new boy about her age who understands her like nobody else in town could.
Years go by. He calls people like her "Mudblood", he makes friends with awful classmates who do illegal and immoral things and are rumored to be training for war. The other side of the war, the one that kills people.
He shows her the worse sides.
By the time he calls her Mudblood, she has already tried to stop him from going down the wrong path. He's ignored her and ignored her and she finally snaps.
Can you blame her?
This apology seems like yet another excuse, a means to an end of keeping her by his side.
She's had enough.
Conclusion
So concludes the saga of Lily and Severus.
As he makes his decisions and she hers, Lily perishes saving a son whom Snape will later torment in her classes.
Harry grows up.
Snape oversees the creation of a school designed for indoctrination, watching passively as cruciatus curses are dished out. Her son meets him on the battlefield.
Voldemort gets to Snape first.
And thus, Snape meets his end.
And that's it, because things work out like that sometimes. Snape chose his path in life. Lily responded accordingly. And years later, he continued to stay stagnant in character growth, even becoming a child's worst fear from his unequally distributed cruelty.
A note:
If you disagree, feel free to debate me! I enjoy calm discussions. HOWEVER, please remember that we are all, in the end, people with lives and feelings, so donât scream at me if you donât agree with what Iâve said here.
I agree with you on a lot of the basic premises here -- no one "deserves" romantic love from another specific person, she was not a "consolation prize," and she had every right to end the friendship after he was cruel to her in front of everyone (and the way she talks about it when he does go to apologise indicates that this was the last thing in a series of events/changes that caused them to drift apart; we don't know what those were or who was more to blame for them if any, but it is implied that this did not just come out of nowhere).
But you're also making a lot of assumptions that aren't supported by canon, and, no offence intended, many seem to be influenced by your own experiences with your friend. I also had a friendship that went similarly to this, and I know that it can be useful to use fiction as a lens through which to get some insight about real-life relationships, but as soon as you start making an argument for something in canon you have to be able to distinguish and separate those things.
We don't actually have evidence in canon that Snape was interested in Lily romantically, or that she didn't have interest in him romantically. The fandom has largely assumed that his love for her was romantic because he was a boy and she was a girl, and that may have been how JKR intended it to be read, but when you really look at it, we don't see proof of that being the case, and it is equally plausible that he loved her platonically, or perhaps it was a mix and he didn't really even know himself because he'd never had an actual friend before or since and never really learned what that meant. We don't see anything directly from Lily's perspective, so everything regarding how she felt about him is speculation. They were, at least at one point, genuinely close friends, and from the apprehension she shares with him about going to Hogwarts as someone from a non-magical family, she probably saw him as the only one who understood at least that part of her (until she got to Hogwarts, at least). It would not be unusual for two close friends of the opposite sex to have some pubescent sexual interest in each other, even if they never expressed or acted on it; that's normal for teenagers to explore and it feels safer when those feelings are directed at someone you already know. We assume Lily did not at any point have any romantic interest in Snape because Snape has always been presented to us as ugly and undesirable and Lily as pretty and popular and charming, but really, that's as much an assumption as anything else. Certainly sexual tension, admitted or not, would make their increasingly divergent paths more fraught. We don't know anything about Snape's sexuality or if he was interested in anything other than his studies and surviving as a teenager, or if he would have told Lily if he was interested. We have no sign of him expressing interest to her or making any kind of move on her. The only thing we see is him being possessive/protective when he thinks she's being blinded by James' charms, and while Lily has every right to feel annoyed by what she sees as him trying to control her, it also is consistent with his intense and socially-stunted nature at this point and doesn't indicate that he has bad intentions. He does truly seem to be concerned that she's being tricked by James, regardless of whether he's also jealous (which, again, is not really unusual for teenagers trying to figure out how relationships work).
Which leads to the next point: the only person in the entire series who compares Lily to an object and a prize to be won is James. Snape never does this, in what we see. His overbearing protectiveness of her in that moment is not the same as treating her like an object or a "shiny toy." James is the one who compares her to a snitch (literally a shiny toy) to be caught as part of a game and claimed as a prize he deserves for being good at the game. James' braggadocio is also not terribly unusual for a stupid teenager, and I won't be so uncharitable as to say that makes him a horrible person, but we've got to get this straight if we're going to be accusing anyone of feeling entitled to Lily -- that was James, not Snape.
As for child Snape's "undisguised greed" and the incident with Petunia, what people determined to find fault with Snape consistently fail to remember is that even though these are Snape's memories, Harry is the one describing them. Harry is the one who interprets child Snape's look as being greedy. This is the first in this set of memories, Harry has not yet seen anything that would contradict his strong opinion that Snape is an evil, heartless villain who got his parents killed because of his own lust for power and the dark arts. Harry hates Snape in this moment. Of course he will project an interpretation onto Snape's expression that matches what he expects to see there (ironically and meaningfully, Dumbledore gives this same rebuke to adult Snape about Harry in memories he sees later in this chapter: you see what you expect to see). Snape is a young child here. If he has "greed," it's to have a friend. He has been abused and neglected all his life, and he's been planning this moment since he saw Lily use magic, he's exhilarated at the idea of finally having a friend and an equal, and she represents a middle-class comfort that to him does seem like something to envy; remember again that this is a little kid and this is how little kids think, it does not mean he is objectifying her or coveting what she has in a way that's different from any similarly-aged child at the same stage of development.
Likewise, the incident with Petunia is an accident. Lily ascribes intentional motivation to it because it frightens her and because she wants to defend her sister, and because she too is a child and doesn't understand how magic or people work. Harry's interpretation neither supports nor rejects Lily's, because he still hates Snape, but he also knows exactly what it's like to be the abused and neglected kid being made fun of and that kids don't have control over their magic, because he did the same thing to Dudley and his friends when he was being bullied and tormented. When we first read about Harry trapping Dudley in the snake cage at the zoo, we're supposed to think it's funny, because Dudley deserves it and because at this point the series is aimed at 10 and 11yos with a simplistic view of the world and no understanding of how magic works in this world yet. By book 7, Harry is legally an adult and has matured a lot, and the readers should have developed a more nuanced understanding of the world as well. The fact that people will consider child Snape's accidental magic in a time of emotional stress to be deliberate and malicious while not thinking the same of Harry's is a failure to have developed age- and story-appropriate empathy, theory of mind, and awareness of one's own biases. Harry still has seen little to make him hate Snape any less and yet we don't have an indication that he is angry at Snape for this, only that Lily is (and it makes sense for Lily to be).
Readers are supposed to be able to pick up by now on the theme that has been recurring heavily since book 5: Harry is an unreliable narrator. In book 5, Harry sees Snape's worst memory and draws the wrong conclusion about what it is. He assumes that what makes this a traumatic memory is the bullying. He does not pick up on anything between Snape and Lily, and after Snape kills Dumbledore and flees, Harry expresses his assumption to Lupin and the others when he says "and he didn't think my mother was worth much." He does not see any of the backstory and comes to the reasonable (at that point) conclusion that Snape was a pureblood supremacist who hated Lily for not being pureblood. When we are shown this memory again in book 7, Harry understands that his interpretation was wrong, and that what made it Snape's worst memory was not what James had done to him (which Harry is able to have empathy for even back then) but the fact that he had hurt and lost Lily. Even 17yo Harry is capable of seeing this about the man he considers one of the worst people in the world, which is a major quality of Harry's that comes up multiple times, but which a lot of readers either fail to get or ignore because they're uncomfortable with things not being black and white.
So, his apology. Lily was not under any obligation to accept it. From the previous scenes, we get the sense that these two have been drifting apart for a while and that they both know they're on different paths that will eventually lead them away from each other if neither changes. Are there explanatory factors that make Snape's outburst make sense? Yes, definitely. I don't think I need to spell that out because you are already aware of that. Does the fact that it makes sense mean that Lily should put her feelings of hurt aside and think only of his point of view while ignoring the fact that her best friend has just done something very cruel to her and in front of an audience when she was only trying to help? No, of course not. And even if a more mature person might have been able to put themselves in Snape's shoes in that moment enough to forgive him, she is not a mature person, she's a 16yo girl at school. It's unfair to hold one of them to a standard we don't hold the other to, and this is something I've seen happen with the pro-Snape people frequently, where they get angry at Lily for not standing by him and seem to expect her to just...not care that her friend just called her a slur in front of everybody (or, even more obnoxiously, go on weird deflecting rants about how it's either not really a slur or that he's "allowed" to say it because he's halfblood, despite every indication being that "mudblood" does not and has never referred to anyone except muggleborns). Lily has every right to figuratively slam the portrait hole in his face and tell him to fuck off. That does not mean that his apology was not sincere or that he did not truly wish he could have taken it back. It is completely false to say that he was making excuses, because we have his apology word for word and he never does. He does not offer anything in his own defence, to the point where this actually seems to be what upsets Lily the most. He does not make excuses for himself, and claiming that his apology is an excuse is entirely a prejudiced reading by someone who does not think that there is anything he could say that would be considered a good enough apology -- and "good enough apology" is NOT the same thing as sincere. Whether Lily accepts his apology has nothing to do with the sincerity of it and everything to do with the level of hurt she feels about it and her evaluation of where their friendship is headed. Someone can be genuinely sorry for hurting you and that does not mean you're obligated to allow them to stay in your life. Frankly I think a lot of the cancel culture rhetoric has severely damaged people's ability to make this extremely important distinction because we now live in an era where every wrong is highly visible and must be publicly atoned for in formulaic ways where the acceptance of apologies is entirely based on whether the audience likes the person or wants to see a public spectacle of execution, and too many people have forgotten that apologies and forgiveness are not actually linked but rather separate, individual choices made by the guilty and wronged parties.
There is more that could be said about the speculations regarding why he took the path he did, whether anyone including Lily made an active effort to stop him, whether it was possible or practical for him to turn against his housemates, and so on, but this is already getting pretty long and I don't think those things add more to my argument that hasn't already been covered, so let's hit the final point, which is his actions as a teacher. First, no one denies that he's unnecessarily mean to his students; I would argue that he's not actually more abusive to the students in general than any other teacher, except for his particular grudge against Harry (which is not justifiable per se but does make sense when you consider that Snape is risking his life every day to protect Harry while Harry is, to Snape's point of view, a mini James determined to break every rule set to protect him just because he thinks they shouldn't apply to him), but no one is actually saying that Snape is a good teacher. Maybe his style is typical of the educational philosophy JKR grew up with, but certainly today most people can recognise that Snape is a jerk and that intimidating his students is not very effective at getting them to learn as much as they might otherwise have learned from such a brilliant guy if he was actually interested in teaching them. But what this has to do with Lily and his supposed entitlement to her escapes me. You say that he stagnated and didn't change; what book were you reading? Did you stop reading the chapter after they got to the mudblood incident? Literally everything after that is about him changing. No, he didn't smooth out all his edges; that's a pretty unfairly high expectation to have, especially of someone who lived his entire life going from one trauma to the next without ever getting support for that. From where and whom was he supposed to learn that? He also died before the war was over. We don't know what would have happened if he had lived, if he would have finally been able to grow past those things; the man never had room or a chance to heal, and even if he did, it wouldn't be overnight. Changing doesn't mean that he's suddenly got a completely different personality. He changed his allegiance in a situation where changing his allegiance would mean certain death if it was discovered, and he did so without anyone telling him to. The only thing he stood to gain from doing so was the chance for Lily to be protected, and even after Dumbledore failed to do this (because of the treachery of Wormtail and the idiocy of James), he still chose to stay on that side when there was nothing left to gain. We have no evidence that he even tried to contact Lily after they ended their friendship, so even if she had survived, it's not like he was going to get her back in any sense. I don't think that many of you really have an understanding of the magnitude of that change or how unlikely it was for him to have come to it on his own volition. He then spent the next 18 years lying to a mass-murdering psychopathic mind reader about it, for no tangible personal benefit whatsoever, and not even the people on his new "side" liked or trusted him. You hold him to blame for allowing the Carrows to hurt students when it is explicitly explained by Dumbledore's request that Snape remain at the school to minimise their capability to harm the students and is shown by Snape "punishing" students by sending them to Hagrid, knowing full well that this wasn't really a punishment but that it got them out of the way, which was really a clever solution to the dilemma he was in about how to keep them relatively safe while not losing control over Hogwarts (which would have meant the Carrows took over completely) or making Voldemort doubt his loyalty (which would have meant his death and the failure of both of his missions to make sure Harry could complete his quest and to protect the students of Hogwarts in general as best as he could).
Lily died to protect Harry because she loved her son, which is a good thing of course, but also futile, since she must have known Voldemort would simply kill her and then (attempt to) kill Harry anyway. Snape could have walked away from his promise to Dumbledore, who was already dead, and joined Voldemort sincerely. Snape chose to let the last person on earth he wanted to have see his most vulnerable moments have his memories, knowing that the plan was for Harry to die shortly after anyway and for the world to never know the truth about Snape or to see him as anything other than evil and a true Death Eater, when he could have instead chosen to at least take his shame with him to the grave, and you think that him being kind of an asshole at a job he never wanted cancels that out and means he didn't change? Sorry, but, you're either reading a different book or you're less capable of reassessing your own biases than a 17yo orphan who's just found out he's expected to let himself be murdered in an hour.
Reblogging for the response. I've been doing this fun thing where I try to ignore "meta" posts (I can't even call OP's post meta) that don't reference the text or even check it. It's been great. I'm exhausted by takes that ultimately feel like their author is determined to justify hating Snape for not being a "good victim" of abuse. I'm tired of the irony of people who treat fictional characters like real people yet use them as an excuse to douse them with judgment and hatred in a way that would be considered vicious and cruel in a real-life setting and therefore feels uncritical and reeks of being terminally online. I hope OP can take something away from the response they got, because it's a great critical reading of the text. I think fandom is a wonderful space for younger people to learn about critiquing literature in a more impassioned and connected way than they learn in school, but I'm out of spoons for reading character analyses that sound like they were written by a tenth grader who sleeps through every English class and, on the rare occasion when they do refer to the source text, only cherry pick details that serve their personal perspective instead of allowing themselves to be open and curious enough to let that text tell them its own story.
"Crack open your books, hit play on the movie, or simply recall" is such a depressingly low-effort, lazy take that equates a single author's work with a studio film and then excuses a failure to cite the source text by assuming that subjective memory is as good as objective text analysis. Your feelings are valid but that does not mean they are reasoned or informed in the way citing the source text you're arguing for or against is. This should not have to be explained. My issue isn't even that I disagree with OP, it's with the way their arguments are poorly constructed, poorly researched, and that while they purport to put forth reasoned, text-based arguments, they do neither and instead wrote a deeply biased pseudo-analysis that doesn't hold water. And look, this is fandom, you're not required to write an academic essay by any means, but there's a reason we're taught how to construct one - it's so we can more easily and directly communicate our thoughts and ideas in ways that prioritize reason because this significantly diminishes the number of responses that are rooted in emotion and up being the kind of online shouting match OP asks us to eschew at the end of their post.

Desc: You spend a day with Tamsy, who you're positively totally utterly sure doesn't know that you're onto him.
A/N: 4.3k words, manga spoilers (nothing explicit but. Its there), cross posted on Ao3, tamsy my beautiful princess with a disorder.
Tamsy Caines is crazy.
Off the walls, indubitably insane. He is paranoid, scheming, and deceptively cruel. He does not know that you know he is crazy.
Well, youâre sure he must think something is up. Itâs not like itâs particularly easy for you to just sit around and pretend like you havenât heard a couple of his thoughts. Ever since you came to the conclusion that he was batshit insane, youâve made it your personal mission to make sure he never knows that you know.
You think youâve been doing a pretty good job. You have been polite. Cordial. Youâve offered to make him coffee a few times. In fact, youâve been so discreet about your aversion to him that he even invited you out for lunch today, and you accepted. Because there was no valid reason to decline, and because you are so dedicated to making sure that he stays clueless about the fact that you know he's crazy.
This could be your first mistake. When dealing with paranoid and sadistic people, which you have plenty of experience doing, you should always assume that they assume the worst. Which means that you should always assume that Tamsy somehow knows that you know heâs crazy, which means heâs definitely trying to get you alone so that he can kidnap and/or kill you.
But then you remember that he definitely asked you to lunch in front of at least three other cleaners, so if he does kill you, everybody will know that he was the last person seen with you alive. So you decide to go to lunch with him, and you let Semiu know about your plans before you head out. Checkmate.
The only other issue is just that⊠even though you know Tamsy is crazy, heâs still really pretty. And itâs not easy keeping your cool in front of incredibly pretty people. Seriously, the amount of times youâve almost let it slip that you had accidentally read his thoughts and knew that he was crazy and maybe a murderer (you arenât sure) are too many to count. Hell, youâve almost told Semiu multiple times, because youâre just that weak to pretty people.
Thatâs how you end up walking the streets of town with Tamsy. Even though he had invited you to lunch, he hadnât told you where exactly you were going to eat.
âDo you head into town often?â you ask if only to fill up the quiet that has begun to settle in between you two.
âWell, you should know,â he smiles at you. His smile is so handsome. Itâs a shame he's evil and possibly onto you. âThere arenât many jobs that need us in the city.â
âI meant for leisure.â
âI come out every now and again, to satisfy a craving.â
Wow. Heâs giving you nothing. Maybe you should be glad heâs giving you nothing, because then you can ask as many questions as you want and he wonât think itâs odd. âOkay! How far are we from this restaurant?â
âNot too far now,â Tamsy maintains a genial smile, even when you arenât talking. Maybe thatâs how heâs fooled everyone all along. âIâm glad you agreed to come with me. Itâs nice to have companionship, isnât it deary?â
Itâs nice to have companionship when your companion isnât a crazy lunatic. But you donât say that, because youâre doing too well at maintaining your secret. âYes, Iâm sure Semiu will appreciate the break. I think I've talked her ear off these past few weeks.â
Tamsy laughs softly. How cute. Even his laugh is pretty. Itâs just not fair, really. Even though you know heâs crazy, you still feel your heart fluttering whenever you look at him. If you didnât know any better, youâd think he poisoned you.
Eventually, Tamsy stops in front of a small restaurant. He ushers you into a booth with a hand on your shoulder, warmth seeping through your sleeve. âPick whatever youâd like. My treat.â
Thatâs suspicious. Why would Tamsy treat you? What is his goal here? His objective? Thereâs no way youâre gonna crack just because heâs paying for your lunch. Semiu has paid for your lunch hundreds of times, and that still isnât enough for you to share all of your insider knowledge. Information doesnât come cheap after all.
You pore over the menu given to you in silence. Every time you take a peek up at Tamsy, heâs already looking at you. How creepy. âDid anything catch your eye?â
âI canât decide. What do you normally get?â
Tamsy shrugs. âItâs my first time here, too.â
The confusion must show on your face, because Tamsy lets out another pretty laugh. âSorry, did you think Iâd come here before? I had passed by after a mission recently and thought youâd enjoy it.â
Thatâs surprisingly sweet. If Tamsy brought you here in order to open your heart, he may have just slightly succeeded. Slightly. You lay the menu flat in between the two of you, spread open by his thoughtfulness. âOkay, well I canât decide between these two dishes. What are you interested in?â
For the first time since youâve sat down, Tamsy shows a lick of interest in the menu. He bows his head next to yours to take a closer look at the writing. His bottom lip juts out in a slight pout, and his long eyelashes fan across his cheek. You have to hold your hand to keep from pushing back a strand of his hair. He really is too pretty.
âI think Iâll get this,â he points at one of the dishes you were considering, but his eyes stay locked on yours over the menu. Heâs got an unwavering surety, one that almost makes you question his definite insanity. You nod, the choice made for you.
âThen Iâll get the other one. Nice!â
Tamsy orders for the both of you, and then returns to his straight posture. Thereâs nothing better to do, so you take to examining the restaurant. âItâs a really nice place.â
He hums in response. âIsnât it? Iâm glad you like it.â
You did not say you like it, but youâll let him believe what he wants. When you take a sip of water, Tamsy makes his move. His sleeve pulls back to expose his arm as he raises it. He brings his hand up from underneath the table, and sets something down with a metallic clank. Itâs a voice recorder.
Your jinki.
It takes a surprising amount of self control to school your expression into neutral. It takes even more self control to keep from reaching out for it like a child. Instead, you peer up at him through your lashes, calm and demure. âWhatâs this?â
âItâs yours, isnât it?â Tamsy gestures towards you. âGo on.â
Of course itâs yours. Thatâs not the issue. The issue is how he even knows itâs yours, why he even has it. Itâs painful to reach across the table to grab it. The metal is warmed from being pressed against his skin. âWhy do you have it?â
Tamsy hums, his hand coming up to his chin in thought. âI just found it laying around, and I thought I recognized it. Iâve seen you passing it back and forth with the boss, and figured you must have misplaced it.â
Thatâs a lie. You know itâs a lie because Tamsy is a pathological liar, and because you gave your tape recorder to the boss just yesterday. Thereâs no way it was just laying around, especially not in someplace Tamsy wouldâve come across it. Still, thereâs no way for you to call him out on it, not without showing a few cards in your hand. âWell then, thank you.â
He smiles again, unbothered. âItâs no problem. Oh look! Thereâs our food.â
You take back every good thing you ever thought about Tamsy. Heâs definitely onto you, and you canât prove it, but heâs definitely deriving some joy from watching you squirm. He digs into the food with a light in his eyes youâve never seen before. You have no choice but to do the same.
The worst part of the entire lunch, even with the knowledge that Tamsy definitely stole your jinki in order to hold it hostage, is that the food is genuinely delicious. Tamsy was right when he thought that youâd enjoy it. âIs it good?â
Speak of the devil. Tamsy is watching you eat. You push your bowl towards him. âYeah, try it.â
That shocks him. Tamsyâs smile slides off his face, and is replaced with a look of utter shock. Good. Itâs nice to know that you can throw him off his game too. He lifts his spoon and dips it into your broth. His eyebrows raise appraisingly as he takes in the flavor. âOh, thatâs really nice.â
âGuess Iâve just got good taste,â you look at him expectantly. For once, heâs kind to you, and slides his bowl over for you to try as well. As you had guessed from his initial reaction, itâs good. âGuess you do too, since you picked this place out.â
âYouâre right,â Tamsy preens, his smile growing wider at your praise. His eyes are almost closed shut from how big his smile becomes. âPerfect! Then let's come back here again soon.â
Oh. Youâre screwed.
---
Tamsy must love watching you squirm.
Heâs got to derive some sort of sadistic pleasure from it, youâre sure. After the two of you finish your lunches, paid for by him, he leads the two of you back to base. He keeps a warm hand on your shoulder, guiding you through the streets.
Itâs not necessary. You know your way around, enough at least to avoid getting lost. Still, you canât bring yourself to shrug him off. Itâs just until you get to base.
Except, itâs not. Tamsy keeps hovering over you even as you get settled into your desk. If there wasnât paperwork strewn everywhere, you think heâd perch himself upon your desk just to get your attention.
âDonât you have any work to do? Any jobs to go on?â you ask him after a complimentary fifteen minutes have passed. âShouldnât you at least rest?â
Tamsy looks at you with shocked, wide eyes. He may be cruel and sadistic, but you canât call him expressionless. âI thought Iâd help you out today. Youâre always swimming in files. You wouldnât mind an extra pair of hands, would you?â
You squint at him. Tamsy maintains eye contact, even when your head moves to get an appraisal of him. After a moment, you pick up a file full of finished paperwork. âIf thatâs the case, then take this to the boss for me.â
âThe boss is out right now,â he hums placidly. His shadow falls over you as he steps nearer to your chair. Youâre trapped between him and the desk. Thereâs no way for you to get out without tackling him. Tamsy squints down at you. âAnd Semiu is still on break.â
âAndâŠ?â
âLetâs have dessert and gossip,â Tamsy muses. His hand reaches for a loose thread by your shoulder to play with. âIâll help you file in exchange for your thoughts.â
This is the last thing you want to be doing. If you ignore the paranoid mania youâve been in ever since Tamsy invited you out, you can admit that you did enjoy your lunch with him. Heâs a sociable guy, even if you suspect itâs just a front to hide clinical sadism. But having him close by while you work is dangerous. Who knows what loose thought you might voice while distracted?
But just like with lunch, thereâs no way for you to decline. In all honesty, you are drowning in paperwork. Having an extra set of hands would help you tremendously. The only issue isâŠ
âDonât you have work you should be doing?â
Tamsy shrugs. If you didnât know any better, youâd think he didnât have a care in the world. âIâve got the day off.â
You canât argue with that. âGrab a chair then.â
You let Tamsy figure out where he wants to start with files. There are worse things he can be doing, even if he is getting in the way of your real job. Now that you have your tape recorder back, you have no doubts that the boss has new records that need deciphering. The only issue is that thereâs no way for you to do that in front of Tamsy without giving away your power, and in turn, ringing at least a few alarm bells.
After all, he canât know you read his mind if he doesnât know that youâre a giver to begin with. Even if he suspects you, itâd be impossible to come to any conclusions unless he sees you use your jinki. For once, youâre grateful for the secret keeping between you and the boss.
Even if it does mean that youâre forced to do all the paperwork youâve let get backed up. Even though itâs a part of your job, you've never felt particularly motivated to get through all the filing. It definitely shows.
Youâre so lost in your thoughts that you barely even notice what Tamsy is doing next to you. When he had suggested making conversation, you expected that he would talk your ear off, or prod you incessantly with questions at the very least. But heâs silent as he gets to work next to you, already familiar with the filing system you have in place. You suppose youâll take your blessings where you can get them.
When you check in on Tamsyâs progress after an hour, you canât find a single mistake in sight. Leave it to him to do your job better than you. Youâre about to praise him when he turns to you with a cloying smile. âWeâve been working so hard. How about a break?â
âWe literally just came back from lunch.â
Tamsyâs smile turns into a small pout. He even bats his eyelashes, the princess that he is. âI didnât know you were such a workaholic.â
âI didnât know you were such a slacker,â you mutter. You slip your hand into your pocket, relieved to find your tape recorder still in there. The metal is cool to your touch as you cradle it in your palm.
His pout deepens. In response to your (immature) jab, Tamsy stands up to stretch. His body rolls into a motion not dissimilar from a cat. âOh dear! Soundâs like someoneâs a bit cranky. I think dessert would cheer you up.â
You lean back in your seat to look up at him. Despite the banter, his eyes are clear. If you hadnât read his thoughts, you would have thought that he was evil or cruel. Even when you poke fun at him, he never responds with genuine hostility. How odd.
âI never wouldâve pegged you for a sweet tooth,â you admit. âIs there anything you had in mind?â
âAnything sweet will do,â Tamsy leans against your desk. âMacarons, chocolates, cake⊠which is your favorite?â
âSomething small would be nice, so I could eat it while we work.â
You follow Tamsyâs example and stretch, your arms raised over your head. The only real complaint youâve got about the job is how exhausting it can be on the body. Staying hunched over those files all day is no good for your back. As you start walking towards the dessert pantry, Tamsy falls into step with you.
âHowâd you let the work pile up so much, anyways?â he asks. He looks genuine this time around, so you cut him some slack, even if you know this is a roundabout way of asking if youâve actually been doing your job.
âI read through all the files before I sort them,â Even if you donât reveal much about yourself on principle, this is one of the things about your job that isnât kept under wraps, so you donât mind telling him. âSometimes while youâre battling trash beasts, you notice things the Supporters donât. I read through Cleaner and Support reports to corroborate accounts, and then file them away.â
It also helps whittle away the time whenever youâve given the boss your tape recorder, and gives you something to occupy your mind. The essence of your job is to gather information and file it, with or without your vital instrument.
âOh!â Tamsy moves forward a half step, leaning into your space. âSo you know about every job we get sent out on? Thatâs a lot, isnât it?â
âYeah, my job is like a compliment to Semiuâs,â you shrug. âI just read through reports after everything is said and done, though. She has to assign every one of you to cases that would best fit your skills. That takes way more familiarity than whatever I do.â
The door to the dessert pantry is already cracked open when you arrive, and Tamsy takes the liberty of searching for a suitable snack. When you enter, you find him already deliberating between three different packages.
A pack of assorted chocolates, a basket of chocolate covered cookies, and a packet of brownies. He doesnât look up at you as you enter behind him, but he does make space for you to look at what heâs seeing. âI canât choose.â
You make a flash decision, your hand settling over the cookies. âBest of both worlds, and we can share.â
Tamsy moves to put away the other two packages, but you grab the chocolates before he can. âThisâll be nice for later too.â
âYou'll get cavities,â he teases, his free hand pinching your cheek. The oddest thing about Tamsy, outside of his sadism and affinity for hiding it, is definitely how comfortable he is with touching you. He's been leaning on you with a familiarity heâs barely earned for the whole day. Itâs not something you would have expected from him.
âIndulging never harmed anyone,â you say, and then reach up to pinch his cheek too. His eyes grow round and his lips part in shock. What you would give to know what heâs thinking right now. âYouâre not my mom, Tamsy.â
He recovers quickly, youâll give him that. His hand covers yours before you can retract it, pulling it down in between you. He doesnât let go. âLetâs head back.â
---
With Tamsyâs help, you organize and properly file away almost all of the paperwork that was originally strewn across your desk. The two of you work until the sun starts to set, at which point you both agree to call it a day. Because you did not feel the need to maintain a steady conversation with Tamsy while working, the silence was comfortable enough that you often forgot that he was even next to you.
Regrettably, it was not comfortable enough for you to forget why you may have ever felt uncomfortable in the first place. After the two of you split ways and youâve returned to your room, you finally find it in you to take out your jinki and use its powers.
Your tape recorder, your jinki, records voices and thoughts. It can replay the thoughts of anyone present during the recording of the tape. While you dread to learn what that means about you, itâs very well equipped for espionage. Even if you are not the one to start or end the record, as long as it is in your tape recorder, it can relay people's internal monologue.
Your real job is really quite easy. You lend your tape recorder to the boss, and he uses it to record meetings with⊠more suspicious individuals. Arkha Corvus has a good intuition, and it becomes a lot harder to deceive him when he has a record of someone's very thoughts. Because the power of your jinki can only be activated and used by you, most givers donât even notice that it is a vital instrument when itâs not in your hands.
Amongst the cleaners, the only ones who are privy to the knowledge that you even have a vital instrument are Semiu and the boss. Youâd like to keep it that way. Anyone in their right mind would guard themselves against you if they had even an inkling of what your jinki can do. While it is useful, your jinki is best kept a secret.
Itâs also how you know that Tamsy is crazy.
The initial recording of his thoughts had been an accident. The boss had given you the recorder while the tape was still running, and you ran into Tamsy on your way back to your office. You held a brief conversation with him about his plans for the day, about his workload, about any problems you had adjusting to the cleaners. He had been polite. Overly curious, but polite.
It wasnât until you returned and began reviewing the tape that you realized just how much trouble you were in. If you were a little less nosy, you would have stopped the tape as soon as you realized that it recorded Tamsyâs thoughts. But you are very nosy, as evidenced by your vital instruments power. Well⊠who could fault you for making good use of your jinki? So you listened. And listened. And learned.
Tamsy is expressive in his thoughts. He likes to give off the aura of someone unbothered and relaxed, but your initial glimpse into his mind revealed that he is anything but. Throughout what you had thought to be a polite conversation, Tamsyâs internal monologue revealed⊠quite a bit about himself.
When you told him you were an office worker: Aw. I wouldâve loved to see you in a fight.
After you told him you liked your work: How cute. I wonder how long youâd last against trash beasts. âI love passionate people. I hope to see more of you.â
After youâd asked about his day: Boring! I wonder what it would take to make her frown. âTâwas alright, better now that Iâm off work.â
Most damningly, after heâd asked you if you were a giver and youâd lied: Sheâs lying. I can tell sheâs a giver. Why is she lying to me? If sheâs a noncombatant, it could become an issue. Itâs always the noncombat abilities that become the most insidious. Thereâs no other reason for her to lie to me. âOh, well I guess you just had that kind of aura.â
As youâd listened further, Tamsyâs thoughts began to devolve into a paranoid mess that you could barely make sense of. It was only when youâd bid him goodbye that he thought of a final coherent sentence.
I wonder how hard I could press before you break.
It was the last line that had truly given you chills. The only small comfort was that there was no way for Tamsy to even begin to know what your ability is. As long as you refrain from showing your hand, Tamsyâs paranoia will be simply that. Paranoia.
It was easy, from then, to begin to read Tamsyâs thoughts. It became almost a habit, the way youâd hit record during the silence in your conversations. It was initially born of self preservation, but with time⊠well⊠you may have gotten too comfortable prodding around his brain. Despite Tamsyâs innate cruelty, he is incredibly entertaining.
You had toyed with the idea, once or twice, to try and figure out why exactly heâs so paranoid. It didnât slip past you that he hated being lied to, but there was something more serious to the way Tamsy appraised you. It wouldnât be hard, in truth, to figure out why.
But then you remembered that itâs way outside of your pay grade to care about what Tamsy of all people is up to. Being nosy is good and fine, but knowing too much is what gets people killed. You have heard enough of his thoughts to know that Tamsy would do away with you if he thought you were getting in his way. He can search for the truth as much as he wants. He is not getting anything out of you.
So start up your tape recorder, and find it open on the newest record left by the boss.
You listen to the recording left by Arkha, taking note of what isnât being said to review with him in the morning. It takes a considerable amount of time, with multiple rewinds required for you to properly pick out overlapping thoughts and voices. By the time you finish, youâre exhausted and ready for bed. Out of habit, you swipe through the recordings you have stored. Any changes will be attributed to Tamsyâs meddling.
To your surprise, almost everything is as you left it. The only notable change is an extra recording dated after Arkhaâs. It's a short recording, and you still have your headphones plugged in, so you decide to let it play.
The first thing that registers once you hit play is the sound of someoneâs throat clearing. Then, Tamsyâs familiar voice rings out through the speaker.
âHello hello! Yâknow, itâs pretty hard to think about what kind of message you want to leave for somebody when theyâre not in front of you. I wonder how youâll react when you find this. Hmm⊠what to say, what to say.â
âYou should be more careful with your things. I was worried when I found this just laying there in the kitchen.â Who knew itâd be so easy to swipe things from the bossâs desk? âYouâre lucky itâs not damaged in any way!â
I know this is your vital instrument.
âYâknow, it wouldnât hurt you to be more open with me.â Stop lying to me. âLetâs spend more time together from now on. Buh-bye!â
The recording ends abruptly in the middle of Tamsyâs disjointed giggling. Through the cacophony of his laughs, you can make out one final whispered thought.
Before you read: Mark and the reader are whipped for each other (obsessed to some degree), suggestive, non consensual touching/kissing, the variants want that cookie, Sinister Mark is his own warning (I don't think I need to specify that any further honestly), the reader is not okay, angst (because why not?), and lastly but not least, violence and blood.
Synopsis: In every universe out there you're the sweet girl that knows Mark Grayson since birth and that sticks with him until you die. One way or another, no matter the circumstance, you die. The ways differ: some are more gruesome than others, some are just mercy, some deaths are an extreme act of rebellion. Right now, as you swing from building to building to try and save your parents, you don't know how exceptional you are, since no other version of yourself has ever left Mark's embrace.
("Mark"
It's a peaceful morning, a weekend. As always, you spent those at his house and wake up on his bed with him wrapped around your midsection. You know he's awake but doesn't want to get up since he tickles your stomach with his nose and hair as he tries to find a better position.
"Mmh?" That's the only thing that comes out of him as he just tightens his hold. You smile, amused, because out of all the people around the globe you're the only one that can 'tame' Invincible, you're the only girl in the world that has the opportunity to see him like this, make him like this.
Even if your parents don't approve of him.
They never did actually.
You wonder if their dislike comes from the fact that when you two were little he broke your wrist from playing too roughly. Maybe it's not that, but the fact that his eyes are a little too apathetic to be normal, his way of handling things is too rough, too harsh, sadistic at times. Nevertheless they don't know what you see in that mess, in that boy that smiles at you only when things go his way. Mark hated them just as much, they were nuisances in his opinion.
It's not that you don't see. You do, you do it better than anybody. It's just that you don't want to acknowledge, accept, that they are right. After all he is not a good person, he is not kind, he is merciless as he slaughters another monster in a way that's too gruesome to even record and show on the news. But he is so good to you, they just don't see it.
You know he loves you in his own distorted way, and that's enough. Because you'd prefer having Mark than not having him at all.
"I have received my acceptance letter from that culinary school. The one that has that two year experience course."
"The one in Paris?"
"Yeah", for a moment nothing comes out of his mouth as he is thinking about this, or maybe he is waiting for you to give him the answer he wants.
"I've been thinking we could go to Paris, since you dropped out of high school". After his father's indoctrination, he didn't see a point in completing his studies when instead he had to train for more important things, like the empire he was going to build.
"I don't know". It's almost a warning, it feels like one.
"What do you mean 'you don't know'? There's nothing that's holding you back". He's the one holding you back instead, because everyone knows that wherever you are, Mark is not far behind.
"What about the GDA?" His voice is calm, collected, a bit scratchy like always, and he has yet to look at your face. To him this conversation is meaningless, it's pointless, just a way to pass time as you comb your fingers through his hair. At the end of the day, no matter how much you whine, you always give in to what he says.
"Mark don't give me that bullshit, we both know that you don't give a shit about them", your statement is not authoritarian, it doesn't question the dynamic between the two of you, but your tone is enough to make Mark finally turn around and look at you.
His gaze is always so dark, so cold, it makes you wonder if he loves you at least a little bit.
"Are you going to keep wasting my time with this nonsense? Why would we even need to go to Paris anyway?" It's not as if in the long run you're going to need the certificate from that course if you're with Mark, the next ruler of the viltrumite empire. You frown, obviously. He knows how much you love baking, he knows how much you've trained and how much sacrifice you've put into this passion, and yet he remains selfish, even if it's you, the only person that's ever made him feel something.
"Then I'll just go alone", he laughs, of course. Where would you even go without him?
"[name]", his laugh tickles your stomach and then you feel his breath move higher and higher as he gets up from his previous positionâlike a wolf does to his prey as it decides which part to eat firstâuntil your noses are almost touching.
"Do you really want to try me?" He stands now fully on top of you, his breath hot on your lips as he stares at them. You know he is a monster, you know who you're dating is not sane. He is dangerous, a killing machine that stands above any other man, any other creature on this planet, and in this little fantasy you're above anyone else too, above all the carnage and the blood.
But you're caged.
Like a little exotic bird who's known nothing else but that cage for their entire life. You dream, you dream big, you try to chase the feeling in your chest that screams that out there there's something else other than bars of metal, that there's a big future ahead. The cage is big, there's a lot of space to roam, it's not locked and your wings are not clipped. You could fly away at any moment, you've had plenty of opportunities before, you could leave him behind and stop following his twisted rules, and the funniest thing is he would let you. But you don't, because you've never known anything else but the cage, nothing else but Mark in your short pathetic life.
Right now you could tell him to fuck off, to let you be and let you live out your dream and have the life you want for yourself, you could get up right now from the bed and go home, and throughout all this he would look at you with those cold, dark eyes and then let you go.
Then you would be a person like the rest, nothing special, just a nobody like everyone else on this weak, miserable planet.
And you couldn't live with that, you could not live in a world where you're nothing for Mark Grayson.
And he knows it.
There's a cruel mocking smile as his lips get closer to yours with each word, his hand moves up your leg as if you were made of glass, a contradiction to his cruel behaviour. You don't give an answer to his threat, you just frown and look away, giving away your decision.
He doesn't say anything more, content with you as he closes the distance between the two of you. He almost crushes you against the headboard, your head banging against it as he assaults your lips. He's cruel, everything about him is. Everything about Mark is rough and bloodthirsty as he just bites your lip in the frenzy of the 'kiss'.
You nearly scream as you feel his canines rip through the skin, piercing it. It's muffled anyway as he doesn't even let you breath, he just takes, and takes, and takes.
Then, just when you think you're going to pass out from the lack of oxygen, he finally lets you breathe. You slump against his shoulder like a puppet whose strings had just been cut, dizzy and lightheaded as the room spins. Your lips hurt, they are swollen and red, just how he likes them.
You don't shed any tears yet, he's done it many times before that you almost like the pain now, but your eyes are glossy as you try to recollect yourself against his shoulder.
Mark' s grin becomes bigger, happier, as he looks at your unfocused stare, at the trickle of blood that runs down your mouth and that you don't bother to clean as you regain your breath slowly.
In mock comfort he nuzzles his nose against your neck, enjoying the way your vein is pumping faster to compensate for the lack of oxygen. He inhales your scent and then he sighs, genuinely pleased with the outcome.
"Maybe if you like we could go on a date in Paris?" You don't answer, still trying to get yourself together from this murderous make out session, even if you're already thinking about what he'd like for you to wear.)
-
Your feet collide with the glass roof of the factory as you smash your way in, the twisted version of Mark had not returned yet from his little trip, but it was only a matter of time before you would have to face him.
Your parents are relieved to see Ladybug here to their rescue, but not enough since that man is out to get you.
"My daughter" your mother gasps as you remove the gag and untie her as quickly as possible.
"Where is she? Is she safe from him? They were on a call just now". She sobs as she thinks of what he might be doing to you right now, and wonders how you knew this man. It was difficult to ignore his desire that radiated from every word as he talked to you on the phone, even harder to not puke at how quickly he had launched himself in the air after you had given up your location.
"She's safe, you don't need to worry about him, I'll take care of him." You make quick work of your parents' restraints, your only thought is being quick, hoping that you'll be fast enough to be able to not fight another version of Invincible. Even if you really want to murder him, you know it will be nearly impossible to do so, maybe it could also cost your life. "Go somewhere else, not your house, it's not safe".
"But our daughter, where is sheâ"
"She's fine!" You're sweating bullets as you feel the air change, your instincts already feeling the ripple in the atmosphere as something approaches. Something fast, murderous, angry.
"You need to go! Now!" You scream as you suddenly need to push your parents towards one of the doors as this Mark comes crashing down going straight for their heads. You manage to evade near decapitation by jumping acrobatically over his flying body, everything seems to go in slow motion as the both of you make eye contact.
Then, before he can stop himself and you can land on the ground, your yo-yo wraps itself around his whole body sending him flying against one of the machines. The whole building shakes from the collision, but you don't even hear him grunt as he just grabs the string of your yo-yo and pulls you to him. You yelp as you don't have enough strength to stop him, he's smiling, grinning like a Cheshire cat as he throws a lethal punch to your head, finally free from your yo-yo's hold after you were forced to let him go because of his pull.
"This is entertaining and all, but you've just interfered with a personal matter, did she send you?" His outfit comically matches yours as he flaunts the colours black and yellow.
You were a ladybug and this Mark looked like a wasp, aggressive like one two.
You would have laughed if you weren't busy shitting bricks thinking how to come out of this alive. Some dark part of you screamed to just kill him, to murder this tainted copy of your Mark not only to avenge your parents, but also the ones of the other version of you. Another part of you, the most rational one probably, tended towards a more cautious approach, one that would make sure you would come out alive with intact limbs.
"Very personal might I had, and now you're even blocking my path", then he laughs, all teeth and gums, "What's with the costume anyway? A ladybug? And those ponytails?"
"Could say the same for you with all that black and yellow", he doesn't even look at you, deeming you insignificant as he just dusts himself from the remaining debris on his costume.
"You sure do talk back for someone so pathetic"
"And you talk too much" you glare at his pitch black lenses, hoping to find at least something in those eyes that for a moment could make you remember that he is Mark, no matter what universe.
"You don't want me to be silent, little bug, after all I'm giving you time to think." He smiles cruelly, gloating at the large disparity between the two of you. Your hate returns triplicated, your whole body trembles under its weight. You know it's the truth, you know how limited you are. Yet you don't like not being taken seriously, you never did.
There's a moment of silence, the both of you waiting for the other to do something. You don't want to ponder too much on the proof of how twisted Mark could have become, had he made different choices. His cape twists around itself due to the wind, it's caked in blood along with his costume. Some of it is old and dried, some of it is bright and fresh as it drips on the ground, but no matter what form, that is still the blood of millions of people who were annihilated along with the city he chose to destroy.
People you can't bring back to life with your powers, because death is not something you can reverse with a quick smile and an object thrown in the air that vanishes in tiny little ladybugs and pink sparkles.
Death is permanent, the only irreversible act of destruction.
He doesn't wait for a remark, suddenly remembering why he was there in the first place, and he makes the first move by flying towards you with the intent to kill.
Every single one of his punches is deadly, so you're forced to dodge every single one of them.
This man doesn't even let you summon your lucky charm, he doesn't move like the Mark you have fought a couple of hours ago. His movements are the manifestation of years of honing his technique, of sharpening his body and mind in a machine that only works to massacre his enemies.
You don't have time to even say the famous words, since he just violently makes his way through the contraptions that surround the building, just to get to you.
You've seen yourself nearly decapitated, or with a hole in your chest as he just squishes your heart in his hands. You don't know how much longer you could escape all these near death experiences, you're just running on pure adrenaline as the beast in front of you gets more restless with each punch and kick that hits the air and not your guts.
Your luck for a moment falters, maybe it's just you making a tiny mistake, but it costs you dearly as the yo-yo you send his way is caught by him. In a matter of seconds your arms and legs are tangled around it, tying you up as he uses the other end of the weapon to send your body through at least three walls.
He hears the cracks your bones make, you feel all of it as you groan.
"Look at that, the little bug doesn't even know how to use her own silly 'weapon'." Your body is suspended in the air thanks to him and you're still tied up like some sick sort of present, all blood and cuts.
"Pathetic", the strings tighten around you, ripping through the costume and cutting your skin. Your yo-yo is indestructible, so you know that before the strings even think of snapping from his brute force, your body will already be a lifeless, sliced mess.
At every scream you make, his smile grows bigger. If he could, he'd take his sweet time with you, maybe even taste your thick dark blood that is now regrouped in a puddle on the dirty floor. Some of it splutters out of your mouth, adding some more red to his collection that stains his body which he wears proudly.
Before he can finally squish you like the bug you are, he's blinded by the pink sparkles of your de-transformation, shocked when he doesn't feel your yo-yo in his hands anymore. When you hit the ground, all tired and rapidly approaching blood loss, you struggle to get up and transform back.
"[name]?" It's a mix between euphoric and speechless, your name once again sounds like it hasn't been said in a long time, and it deeply freaks you out. You're afraid, don't really know what to do as you shed some tears that mix with the blood that coats your chin. You're back in your costume, but you feel naked in front of his gaze that speaks volumes, that almost devours you whole.
He laughs, ugly, like a maniac as he just hugs you tightly like you're the only medicine that can soothe his ache.
"I hate you so much" his words are fused with disbelieving laughter, his tight hold nearly makes you see god as he just inhales your scent, taking it in with deep long breaths and exhaling it in hot sighs that make you shiver.
"You don't know how much I hate you, after all I did..." He sounds so desperate, all his previous composure discarded. "Youâyou just left me, after everything I did for youâfor us", he squeezes you even tighter, you can feel his rage, maybe even disappointment. You're scared like never before, cold sweat runs down your forehead, afraid of what he might do to you, seeing as he is losing his marbles ranting about things that happened with the you from his world.
"I fucking hate you so much, you had to go and ruin everything", he sounds like he might cry as he grits his teeth, but he doesn't, and you know he won't since instead his hands grip your blood coated skin even tighter, almost as if he was trying to imprint the feeling of it in his memory. He won't cry now, not when he didn't even flinch when he saw your lifeless body hang in the kitchen.
He had buried you, you had made him bury you.
He had taken care of every problem that stood in your way: his father wanted to get rid of you? Murdered in cold blood with his heart as an offer for you, people who did you wrong? Gone in the wind, your parents when they decided they had enough of him? Fucking ripped in half, bodies bent in the most gruesome ways imaginable.
You had always accepted him for how he was, because you couldn't live without him or with the thought of being nothing to him. You had flinched when you saw his dad's bloody heart, you had grimaced at the smell of the blood of your friends, of his coworkers, of innocent people, but it had never repulsed you enough to hate him or to not hug him, to not kiss him.
Yet, when he finally decides to murder the bastards that stood in the way of your future, the world he had envisioned for the both of you, you suddenly think it's too much?
How hypocritical could you be?
Your struggling is useless, you're punching him, trying to kick him, but it's all futile.
"Maybe deep down, you knew that I would have never let you go, even if I was so cold and 'heartless'". Without meaning to, you had given him clear access to your neck, to your vein that moves so rapidly due to the frantic beating of your heart.
"You're satisfied now, right? I let you make the choice you wanted for once." He hates how much he needs you, how dependent you had made him.
"Let me take care of the rest, now you just need to listen and be good for me, alright?", you don't understand how a statement could be both so malicious and adoring at the same time. After witnessing his delirium, anguish consumes you, were you the reason why he was such a psychopath? Was Mark destined to go rouge if he stuck with you?
Your speeding thoughts come to an abrupt stop as you feel teeth sinking in your neck, a scream erupts out of your dry throat, but he's quick to silence you as he just licks the blood running down your neck.
Your neck becomes his canvas, he covers it in bites and hickeys, brandin you like an animal and tasting your flesh and blood as if they were the most delicious things he has ever tried. A sob escapes you as you just close your eyes and take whatever he is giving you, but when you open them he is staring directly at you.
His mouth is covered in your bloodâjust like yoursâthen, as if he couldn't get enough, he slowly licks the blood that's running down your chin, loving the taste too much to let any of it go to waste. Your eyes widen as you feel his warm lips move against yours, your hands fly up to his hair and he moans in the kiss after you pull them to get him off you. For a moment your mouths separate but your lips collide again in a vicious cycle of tugging and pulling. He's panting, hair sticking in every direction, and you're light-headed, most likely due to the blood you're losing.
He doesn't give you any room to breathe, uncaring that unlike him you need oxygen to survive.
So you do the most logical thing really, you bite his tongue.
Nearly chewing off the squishy organ.
Naturally, his reaction is instantaneous as he screams and drops you to the ground. "You bitchâ" he splutters out with a newly acquired lisp that makes you giggle as you lay on the ground, high in the clouds from all the blood that you were rapidly losing.
Before he is even able to grab you from the floor like a little mindless puppet, you're scoped in the arms of someone else, red paints his white suit.
You can't move, your eyes slowly closing as the cold air hits your face and warm, bloody hands hold you like you were giving to die at any moment, maybe you were, maybe not, you don't really know.
"Hey, don't go dying on me", the voice sounds as if it were underwater, you don't get all the words, but hearing 'dying' is enough to understand the meaning of the entire phrase.
"Don't worry, I'm just resting my eyes for a bit, okay?" You're mellowed out, tired and giggly as you just touch his nose with a "BOop!", your bloody finger smearing your insides on his perfect nose.
He looks at you with an undecipherable gaze, or maybe you're not really in the best conditions to understand his feelings, but then he just sighs, worried? Angry? Loving? All the above?
"You better just be resting".
( "Don't you sometimes wish you could justâI don't knowâdisappear, even for a second." It's cold, it's a dark night only illuminated by the full moon.
"I have done that sometimes, there are so many desert planets in the galaxyâ", you interrupt his calm voice, gentle and relaxed as always when he is with you.
"IâI don't know Mark. I think that no matter where we could go, we can't escape this, our responsibilities." You're sitting on a roof, your black suit clashes with his white one. Another reminder of how incompatible the both of you were.
"I can't let you conquer earth, I can't let the viltrumite empire win, but I don't want to lose you".
"You don't need to lose me" he breathes out, after his hands always find yours. Sometimes you think that it might be an instinctual response for when you need comfort, stability.
"And then what? I give up like a coward and live off the rest of my days in luxury as earth is enslaved? You know right that I can't just do that". He doesn't get why you need to make it so difficult, he could force you to just accept his way and get this over with, but he doesn't want to hurt you.
"But why not?"
"Would you give up Viltrum for me?"
A shaky breath. A twitch. The air stills.
"Don't do this to me [name]..."
Your lips twitch downwards and you don't hesitate to just get away from him, baton ready to just fly out of there.
"There you have it, your answer, why should I give up Earth when you wouldn't do the same for me?")
(If you haven't read them yet I suggest you go check part 1 and part 2 to understand part 3 better)
(part 4)
Before you read: protective Mark, him and the reader are whipped for each other (more like obsessed to some degree), they are also really dumb, the variants want that cookie, suggestive, smut, dubious consent, dry humping, the reader is not okay, kidnapping, threatening, angst (because why not?), and lastly but not least, violence and blood. By the way, this is my first time writing smut so I really hope it came out okay at least, if not, I'm really sorry.
Synopsis: Running, escaping, evading. You do that better than anyone else. It's also the only thing you can do right now when distorted versions of Mark are trying to catch you with the goal to have you for themselves after their version of you bit the dust under different circumstances. While on the battlefield you don't only fight broken men, but yourself as you resist from crumbling under the weight of their words and acts.
("If I were that girl I would dump that guy on the spot" William scoffs while sitting on the counter.
"Did you hear what he just said to her? Like, I could not take that level of disrespect, no matter the guy" he adds before slurping his chocolate milkshake. It's late, the sun is setting and the warm orange hues make the bakery the perfect setting for a date.
Or an evening with your friends.
You're working overtime since your co-worker is sick, but you don't mind, especially when it's not rushing hour and your friends are here.
"The guy is not even that hot." Is your only remark as you rest your weight on the counter, your hand on your face being your only support as you look across the room towards the couple.
Markâthe most subtle out of the three of youâalmost snaps his head around to look at the them, now suddenly interested in the conversation.
Because of this, the man notices you and whispers in the woman's ear, now both of them are laughing and you feel the embarrassment creep up.
"Great job Mark, now they think we're weirdos"
"I didn't mean to! I meanâyou were also looking! And I was curious."
"Yeah, but turning your head around like an owl was not the way dude" says William, who's now savouring the chocolate cake, with chocolate cream, covered in chocolate and with chocolate sprinkles.
"But back to the topic, he is not bad looking [name], it's just his personality that's garbage"
"well he is not really my type" you answer, not really focused on Will as you clean around a bit.
"Oh, oh! Then what is your type then? What about french men?" There's a teasing tone, and a brow wiggle you don't see.
"I wouldn't know honestly." The response comes out of your mouth like water out of a pitcher, you weren't thinking about the consequences of your slip up when you said the words.
Well, at least until you turned around and saw both of your friends slightly shocked.
"What?" Your brows are furrowed, your confusion is evident.
"You were in the city of love and you didn't, I don't know, date anyone? Fuck anybody? Like girl, why did you even go to Paris at this point". You don't mean to blush, there's nothing to be embarrassed about when you have had your reasons to not make any kind of romantic experience, unlike the men in front of you.
It's meant to be a joke, but you can't help but feel a little ashamed.
"I was busy!" Is the only thing that you can come up with as you raise your voice slightly. Will just laughs as if this was the funniest thing in the world, news flash it's really not.
Especially when Mark is present and is staring at you with an expression you can't decipher.
"Well, there's nothing wrong with being a virgin".
This time Mark is the one that speaks, he is not really looking at you but William can see his half lidded eyes, his downturned eyebrows. At that he can't help but laugh even harder for your dismay. (Of course he is the one who says this, of course there's nothing wrong if you are a virgin. It's not like he deeply cares about whether or not you have had any kind of experience with other men, but the possibility of being your first makes him giddy.)
"Mark is right, the concept of virginity is misogynist anyway". With William's wheezes and Mark's unfocused gaze the conversation comes to an end.
You don't even want to know what that couple is even thinking of the three of you after this)
-
Your arms are tired, your body is aching. For the last few hours you have been straining yourself to try and keep up with this version of Mark, who's not exactly holding back.
"Babe really, I can't believe that you're better than half the guys I've faced. But you don't really need to do all this you know." He is floating in the air with a smirk forever plastered on his face, there are some cuts here and there and some of your blood along with his drips on the ground as he stands with his arms crossed.
"Have I told you already how hot you are in this costume? In my world you wanted to be a superhero too, a shame you didn't have these powers". You have swung him around all day with your yo-yo and you have conjured too many lucky charms to count as you've tried to lose him while on the run, but nothing, this cat and mouse game seemed neverending.
"I'm not your girlfriend or the version of me you know about, so don't call me babe", your voice is firm as you speak, it's tired too but you can't just give up now.
"Of course you're not her, she's dead. You're the upgrade."
You're horrified by the statement that's said so lightly, did this man even love your alternative version in his world?
"Whatâ"
"Hey, hey. Before you say it, of course I loved her, that's why I love you." The words are like some sort of tautology, a statement that's always true no matter what. He says everything with so much confidence because he truly believes in his words.
"Because at the end of the day, no matter what universe, it's still you". He is quick as he reaches out to grab you, you manage to evade him but only by an inch as his hand grazes your skin.
As you conjure your lucky charm a weird device falls on your hands, but when you look at Mark you don't get how this could work against him.
It's not like he is giving you the time to think either.
"In every universe you're the kind hearted girl that sticks with a guy like me", he doesn't stop and you need to jump as he launches himself towards you. This time you're late and before your yo-yo can wrap itself around the last lamppost standing, he grabs your leg and slams you on the ground with enough force to leave you breathless.
"You're [name], you're the girl who loves to bake, the girl who is too nice for her own good". You don't have time to get up as he is immediately on top of you, you try to crawl away from him but it's useless as he just grabs your leg and pulls you back in his possessive embrace.
"The girl that in each universe falls in love with me, there's no exception out there, we're meant to be", the words are whispered in your ear and you suppress a shiver. Your hips are flush against his and you can't even move without bringing yourself closer to him, his eyes are clouded with anticipation and no more self restraints as one hand bruises your hips and the other rests besides your nearly concussed head.
He moves, slowly, tentatively, because he wants to savour this, to unravel you with care after not having you for so long. And you whimper as a jolt of pleasure hits your body, because what could you do if not that?
And he keeps doing this, content for now to just roll his hips against yours.
Your costume is barely any protection as you can feel every inch of him rub against you.
Your ponytails are undone and your hair is let loose creating a halo around you, you don't feel like an angel as you wrap your arms around his back, one of your hands clawing on the material of his suit.
The squelch of the two fibers against each other fills the empty street along with your suppressed moans and his audible ragged groans.
Late at night, in the dark of your room, in the privacy of your walls, you had imagined how Mark would sound, how he would feel as he makes his way inside you.
And this was wrong, tantalising, but wrong.
But you can't do anything about it, or maybe you don't want to do anything about it as your legs lock around his narrow waist almost on autopilot.
You feel dizzy, your cheeks warm and rosy as the hand that was gripping your hip moves to knead your butt. The thread that's keeping you together almost snaps as he keeps his rocking steady, with your little sounds, whimpers, moans and shudders as his only fuel.
He audibly swallows at your blissed out face and then he kisses you. It's messy, it's rough, it's all teeth and tongue, it's him sucking the air out of you like he'd die if he doesn't and it's youâinexperiencedâtrying to follow his lead. But it's loving, it's passionate, it's everything you had desired from Mark, your Mark.
Like in the romantic novels that you used to read (and that Mark bullied you for), the kiss leaves a string of saliva to connect your mouths.
"I'm so lucky that I got to you first" his breath hitches as he tries to remove your suit, not really knowing where to start since you would need to detransform to actually remove it
"Losers, all of them, fucking hate those assholes, especially your version of myself. All whiny and pathetic, a coward through and through". His inebriated gaze travels your whole body until it reaches your flushed face.
"But he's not here, the coward didn't even check on you personally". There's no one in this little evacuated area, not a civilian, not Eve, not Mark. You're just for his consumption now as he momentarily spits vitriol against your Mark, your dear Mark that is fighting tooth and nail right now.
You hadn't even texted him to reassure him you were okay.
Guilt seeps in as a few tears run down your face and your lip trembles, you don't let a sob run out of you but the face of the man in front of you changes.
(It was late, Mark's parents were already sound asleep but the both of you were still wide awake on the couch. Two blankets were wrapped around you as you're curled against your personal heater.
The movie you had chosen was tragic, not in the "oh no, doomed lovers!" sense, but more in the "I'm gonna make you cry every liquid inside of your body" type of movie.
There was only so much suffering your hormonal fifteen year old self could handle and eventually the dam broke.
.
.
.
"hey, are you crying?"
"Of course I'm crying, didn't you see how that little kid died? And his little friend was there, oh god" you sob as the snot fills your nostrils.
"It's just a movie...it's not even inspired by a real life event, don't cry.." he had never cried easily, probably something viltrumite.
You sniff, more like snort at his attempt to comfort you.
Before you can use your sleeve to wipe your tears, he is using his hands to remove them for you.
Thinking that maybe this was enough for one night, you rest your head on his chest and mutter something almost inaudible.
"Your movies are stupid".)
"Hey, don't cry, I'm here" it's awkward, it's guilty. His reaction is confused as he doesn't know what ignited your sadness.
Your arms are still wrapped around him as he kisses the tears of sorrow away, in a way that's too sweet for a merciless mass murderer.
The longer you cry, the longer you feel yourself coming back from that haze, because the guilt overpowers your desire, and suddenly you realise that you're still holding tightly your lucky charm.
And you see them, you see the possibilities.
You remember his weakness, the weakness all viltrumites had due to their constitution.
So you press the button on the little device and a sound comes out of it. Sharp, lethal, quick.
The man gasps and the sound he makes is terrifying. Blood oozes out of his nose and ears, it ends on your face and you don't care as you press the device against his ear.
He is trying to move, to choke you, to push your arm away, but he's too weak and with a deranged look that screams vengeance, he passes out on top of you.
Your head falls on the ground since the adrenaline is running out, you rest there with his body on top of you just like lovers would after a night well spent.
The sob that you were holding back before is finally free. You are relieved as you slowly use your last remaining forces to push him away from you, then with shaking legs you search for your yo-yo before making your way to your apartment.
You need to tell others you're okay, you need to tell Mark, you need to help others.
As soon as you enter inside your home through the window you collapse on the ground, your costume vanishes in a puff of pink and sparkles as Tikki gasps and flies towards you.
"[name]!" She's tired too, you've used your miraculous far more than usual. You didn't have a time limit like teenagers, but overusing it is still tiring both on the user and the kwami.
"I'm fine, I'm fine", you reassure her and yourself, "I just need to rest for a few seconds" you breathe through your mouth as your sweaty and hot body is pleased by the coldness of the floor.
"You should eat" you breathe out, "I need you to be in your best shape, or else we're not making it out alive". Tikki frowns at your answer, but gets to work as she thinks about how much time you have left before the man with the mohawk comes back for you.
Feeling a little bit better, a little less dead, you also get to work and you reach for your phone.
You answer various texts even if they're not online right now: Mark's, Eve's, William's. Even Debbie has tried to reach out to you as you look at the notifications on the phone.
Your parents have tried to call you.
Your face becomes as white as a sheet as you suddenly remember about your parents. You almost feel like puking at the possibility of them being hurt, or even worse, dead. Before you can tell Tikki to transform, you receive a call that makes your fear disappear for a second:
Mom is calling
You have never answered a phone call so fast.
"Mom! Mom.. oh my god" you choke out as tears of relief run down your face. "Are you okay? Where are you?" There's breathing at the other end of the line, your mother doesn't answer as you plead for everything to be alright.
"Mom? Mom, are you okay? Please, tell me something", your fear comes back tenfold, since once again you don't hear either of your parents' voices. Instead you're met with muffled sounds, distorted, but not too far away from the person that is holding the phone. There's rustling, a muffled cry and then finally a chuckle.
It's dark, twisted, but it's Mark's.
"[nameee]", the variant drags your name out of his tongue, almost tasting it, as if he hasn't said in a long time. "Where are you, [name]? You weren't home when I checked. But I got a little surprise for you, you can call it a little gift", he laughs as he moves the phone closer towards your parents. They are gagged, tied up on a chair and a bit roughed up, not too much, but enough to make them alert about his every move.
And they are afraid, so afraid. Because this psycho version of Invincible wants you, their little girl, and you can feel them trembling throughout the call as the both of them choke on the gag.
"See? They are fine, just peachy. But they would be even better if you just told me where you are", there's a hint of frustration in his voice, because why were you not at home waiting for him when he had arrived at your house? He had found your worried parents instead. But he doesn't need to worry, because you always give in to him, especially when it's about your parents.
(And he knows better than anyone how much you love them.)
Your teeth almost shatter, anger consumes you as the bastard on the other side of the call keeps your parents hostage, and for what? So he could have his way with you just like the other passed out viltrumite?
"You bastard!" You scream as your fist clenches tightly enough to draw blood with your nails. "I'll kill you, I swear I'll kill you when I see you".
There's silence on the other line, and then a loud boisterous laugh that makes you seethe, you bite your lip as a way to dissipate some of the rage, but it's useless and now the taste of iron feels your mouth.
"Oh come on dear, don't make me laugh, just tell me where you are right now and I'll come and get you".
"What if you just tell me where you are instead". Tikki has stopped eating, instead she is listening carefully.
"[name]", now he sounds cold, icy, like a man that wants control and demands respect, "I'm not playing around, if you don't tell me where you are right now I will murder your parents, and trust me I've been hitching to do it a second time".
Then you beg, because you need more time, more time to think about something.
"Please, just, just let me come to you, don't hurt them, please". Even if you're pissed, you can't play around with the lives of your parents. It's almost impossible to stay still after this piece of shit has just said that he would gladly kill them again.
From the other line you hear a disturbing sigh, one of pleasure, a sigh that belongs to a beast that is appeased.
"I just love when you beg, you do it so nicely too. A shame I can't see your face". Making a decision is difficult, you could tell him where you are but you're not sure after his revelation that he wouldn't kill them just to see your reaction.
"Do you remember that abandoned factory? The one we always went to when we needed some time away from everyone else?" You do remember it, but that wasn't the purpose of the building for the both of you. You and Mark had found the place after a whole day of exploring the outskirts of the city, but you rarely ever went there.
"IâI thought you were closer to where I am now" you mutter.
You can almost feel the way the expression on the other Mark's face changes, you can view the way the fabric of his mask creases due to his eyebrows furrowing from confusion.
"Where are you [name]?" You can taste the desperation rolling out of him in waves. You don't know if he will buy this, but Mark was never the sharpest tool in the shed compared to you.
"I am sorry, I justâI forgot that I'm not in the USA right now. I just panicked when you said you would kill my parents." You say everything fast, trying to fake being panicked in the best possible way.
"I'm in Paris right now" you say the address of your aunt's old apartment, now empty as she has moved out of it a while ago.
"You need to come get me..".
A beat, a shaky breath as your parents are almost screaming as they understand that you have given up your location.
"You're really lucky that I'm in a good mood today", the phrase almost feels like deja vu as you remember the Mark with the mohawk saying something similar.
"Ah, and wear something nice" he adds, before hanging up.
As soon as the call ends you're in the air suited up and running as fast as you can. You zap from building to building as you hope, no, as you pray, that by some miracle you were going to be faster than him.
Hello! This was fun to write, honestly a roller coaster since I've never written smut before but there's a first time for everything I guess. This was shorter than the other parts since my Easter break is almost over and I need to prepare for a big exam. Anyways thank you for reading and see you next time <3
Dear friends, kind hearts, and everyone who has stood with us,
When I first opened my heart to the world and shared our story, I never imagined the amount of love and solidarity we would receive. Thanks to your incredible support, weâve now reached $12,837âa milestone that brings real light to some very dark days.
From the deepest corners of my heart, thank you.
đ A Journey of Loss, but Also of Strength
As many of you know, Iâve lost 25 of my loved ones during this devastating war. That grief lives with me every single day. Itâs in the silence that once held laughter, in the empty spaces where we once gathered as a family.
But through your help, Iâve also felt something else: hope. And that hope is priceless.
â21/Oct/2023 Before It Reached Us: The Day Our Neighborâs House Was Destroyedâ
A quiet moment of fear, filmed just before everything changed.
â22/Oct/2023 The Morning After: Our Family Home in Ruinsâ
This is what was left behind after the bombing of our home.
đż What Life Looks Like for Us Now
Despite everything, weâre still here.
Still surviving. Still hoping.
But things have only gotten harder.
The war has returned, more brutal than beforeâand for over a month now, Gaza has been completely sealed off. No food is coming in. No medical supplies. No aid. No trade. No one is allowed to leave, and no one is allowed to enter.
Your support reminds us that weâre not forgotten. It reminds us that someone, somewhere, is still listening. That someone still cares. That weâre not completely alone in this.
Every message. Every share. Every dollar. It tells us:
Youâre walking this road with us.
And that gives us the strength to keep going.
đ What You Can Do
If youâve already donatedâthank you beyond words.
If you can share our story again, it could reach someone who can help.
Even $5 means warmth, comfort, and a chance to breathe a little easier.
My name is Mosab Elderawi, and I am a survivor of the war in Gaza. Life as I knew it has been completely destroyed. I have lost my home, my
âš Why It All Matters
This isnât just about reaching a fundraising goal. Itâs about surviving war with dignity.
Itâs about believing in tomorrow. Itâs about making sure my daughter grows up knowing that the world did not look away.
Thank you for your kindness, patience, and belief in our humanity.
Youâve helped me find my voiceâand I will use it to keep hope alive.
đ From the Heart: A Quiet Apology
Thereâs something I need to sayâsomething thatâs been on my heart for some time.
When I first began sharing our story, I didnât know what the right way was. I was scared, grieving, and trying to protect my family in any way I could. I reached out to many people, hoping someone, anyone, would see us. In that process, I now realize I may have overstepped, and I might have made some feel overwhelmed.
If that happened, I am truly sorry.
Please believe me when I say it was never out of disregard or pushiness. It came from a place of fearâfear of being forgotten, fear of not being able to keep my family safe, fear of watching everything I love slip away in silence.
Iâm learning as I go. Iâve slowed down. Iâm more mindful now, trying to share our journey in a way that feels respectful of the space and hearts of those listening.
If my words ever came at the wrong time, or in the wrong way, I hope you can understand where they came fromâand I hope you can forgive me.
Thank you for seeing past my mistakes. Thank you for still being here. It means more than I can ever explain.

I've been eating up Mark Grayson X reader Fanfictions like a machine: series, one shots, headcanons and so on. But like, a lot of the readers in those are human and I can't help but think about the fact that the both of them, no matter what ending, they are doomed.
I mean, Mark is half alien and that gives him a really long life span. Compared to his, ours is the one of a thraxan.
Imagine the grief, the mourning, the sorrow that doesn't just appear when you die, it comes in your lives way before.
Sometimes you can't easily fall asleep in Mark's arms, you lay awake and look deeply at his face. Something builds up in your chest and your eyebrows furrow. He hasn't changed over the years, but you have: grey hair and wrinkles greet you in the morning as you stand by the mirror, while Mark's face is youthful and his hair is black and luscious.
You don't know if you should be angry at your humanity or at his alien heritage that will keep him alive in this world far longer.
In the deep of the night you wish he hadn't fallen in love with you, because it was selfish. You know Mark, you know how much he loves you, how much he will grieve.
Yet it's too late to go back, too late to not accept his shy invite on a date as the both of you are freshly out of highschool, when life was easier.
It's selfish to hope that he will love you even centuries from now on, so while deep down you want him to love you forever, you wish he will move on and find someone else that can keep him just as happy.
Mark tries to ignore the signs, you can call it denial I guess. At first he hadn't thought about this, he didn't really notice the grey hair, he saw some wrinkles here and there but nothing that made the alarms in his head ring. What really made him aware of your ageing was the frailness that came with it, the way you stopped going outside with him in fear of being judged due to the big age gap in appearance.
I think that Mark will mourn and if he moves on it's up to you, even though I don't think he would, especially if you have children (even worse if the kid looks a lot like you, even if the viltrumite genes are strong as hell).
Like imagine he remarries after your death and yet everything just reminds him of you, bonus points if your children don't like his new wife, lol.
Hii, honestly I couldn't wait to write part 2 especially because I just love the variants and writing various shenanigans with the characters. With that said, I hope you enjoy the chapter!
Before you read: protective Mark, him and the reader are whipped for each other (more like obsessed to some degree), they are also really dumb, the variants want that cookie, deception, non-consensual touching, suggestive, the reader is not okay (unreliable narrator), angst (because why not?), and lastly but not least, violence and blood.
Synopsis: It was a way to cope, if you could overcome your past with Mark, you would start anew, but as [name] it was impossible. You had missed this sense of normalcy with him, you had missed Mark, and being Ladybug had given you the solution on a silver platter. With a mask on you forgot about all your insecurities, in your suit you forgot about everything that had transpired with him and you acted almost like you did once. It was easy, flawless, until, well, it was not, and the consequences of your actions came crashing down on you.
"Tikki does it look like I can do anything else?" Your frustration was palpable in the air, you didn't want to hear the scolding.
"[name] please" she pleaded softly while flying in front of the woman who had her arms tightly crossed and her face tense. "I'm only saying that you can't keep doing whatever it is you think you're doing, it's not healthy".
"Then what other option do I have Tikki? As a normal human I was not enough, now as a superhero I can't face him without my mask." Your eyes were staring at the ground, your jaw clenched in anger and you closed your eyes for a second from feeling the tears.
"Mark... I don't understand him. How could he approach me as if nothing ever happened? As if he didn't sever ties with me, as if I didn't go no contact from everyone for almost two years." Your hands were swiftly wiping the tears away. Tikki for a second went still, shocked by your outburst, and then went to hug your cheek, not caring in the slightest if the tears wet her tiny form.
"I justâI don't understand. I can't do it, I can't go back to how things were without addressing everything. But even if I did, we wouldn't go back to how things were. I can't even face him, I can barely speak to him, or give him what he needs apparently, and now, I can't even let him go." Your deep sigh reverberated through your chest, a slight tremor ran through your spine and you felt more at peace after having let some of the build up tension out of your body.
"I'm so tired of not being enough Tikki... If I had been enough do you think he would have at least apologised?" The words were brimmed with insecurity which made the kwami of creation gasp in horror at how little you thought of yourself.
(Paris had destroyed you and those two years were a buried secret that you and the city shared. You were a murderer in cold blood, you had done it for the city, you had gotten rid of the black cat that mindlessly annihilated without remorse. That day of destruction and death, that dark day for the supposed "city of love", was the only day the Parisians had praised you. "Their saviour" they called you, "their hero", "the luck of Paris". You remember puking your guts out, your knees giving up in your tiny claustrophobic bathroom. You had enjoyed killing the cat, you had loved the feeling of creating strategy after strategy to demolish every little ounce of his hope and strength, your smile becoming more twisted each time you saw him crumble. Tikki didn't say a word to you about the ordeal, not to comfort nor punish you verbally, but while you had given a young man eternal rest in a brutal way, you had done it for the greater good. That fact alone was enough for Tikki to know that while wrong, you had done the necessary thing that many would have hesitated to do.)
"Can you believe that I really thought that I would have a chance as a superhero?" Your laugh is a ugly, almost hysterical as you wither in the corner of your room.
"[name] that's not true, I really think you should talk to Mark about thisâ"
"And then what?"
"Haven't you stopped to think for a second? Don't you maybe think that Mark did that years ago not because you were not good enough but to protect you?" Tikki then gave a napkin for [name] to blow her red nose in.
"What do you mean? Then why only me?" You say focusing your puffy eyes on the tiny red and black creature.
"Is it really so out of the question to think that maybe you were so special that he couldn't have risked you getting hurt because of him? Are you really going to just disregard the fact that he stuck with you through thick and thin? And for what? Because you overthink too much".
"it's not overthinking if it's the truth, he didn't even message me or call me to know if I was okay after I went to France". There were so many different little things you were focusing on, your mind was imploding from the possibilities, from the guilt of having jumped too fast to conclusions.
"I don't know about that for sure and I'm not justifying his actions, but we need to see his perspective. We don't know why he did that, yet you can ask him that". How could Tikki even propose this when you couldn't even look him in the eyes?
"You can't hide forever behind this excuse, your avoidant behaviour is just your way of justifying your fear of being faced with the reality of things again. I know you're afraid, but you can't run forever or hide behind your mask forever. Even if the worst case scenario happens and we discover an even uglier truth than what we imagined, at least you will have the truth in your hands. You will be able to finally get closure, to have a fresh start". After recovering from the shock of Tikki's wake up call, you slowly nodded while some tears made your way down your face. An ugly smile, the one you make when you cry, made its way up to your face as you hugged your friend closely and closed your eyes.

Eve knew that Mark had a childhood friend, she knew that he cherished her deeply from how fondly he spoke about her when they had been together. She wasn't jealous, Eve recognised her worth and wouldn't want to exchange it with anyone else's, yet it kind of hurt to see that Mark didn't talk about her with the same fondness. For Eve you were at some unreachable peak, and in the moment she had realized it, she understood how Alexander the Great's generals must have felt knowing that he was unsurpassable.
Mark wasn't the only man in the world, but for some time he had been her world. He had been a good boyfriend, caring, attentive, sweet and so on. They had their ups and downs, like any other couple, but overall the experience had been unforgettable.
(A buried thought screams that in another universe where you don't exist, maybe there's a possibility that she's still with Mark. Even if she does think about it sometimes, she doesn't dwell on it.)
Mark loved her, she wouldn't doubt it. Yet, it wasn't enough when she wasn't the girl he loved the most.
(To their friends they say they separated on a mutual accord, but nobody knows how it had happened. One day everything was fine, while the next they were on separate ways. She couldn't stay with Mark when you were on his thoughts 24/7, but after seeing you in person she couldn't really blame the guy .)
Meeting you had been an humbling experience.
You weren't the most attractive person she had seen, but there was something about you that made you look like a flower in bloom. The kind that you appreciate early in spring after a harsh winter, the kind you don't pick off the ground just to see it alive the next day.
Alive.
That was the word.
You felt alive, not just in the literal sense. More in the fact that every little gesture, every smile, every giggle livened up the room. For Eve this kind of beauty is not something you can achieve, it's something that you have because you're a good soul and your body shows it.
You're no saint, but for a momentâthe goodness in you, the pain you carry both as a civilian and a hero, your smilesâall of this makes Eve believe in something, in something good, that almost resembles hope for this world. (She hadn't meant to find out who you were, it was accidental. One moment she was following you to talk to you, the next you were de-transforming, completely clueless of her presence.)

"So you know Invincible's name?" Atom Eve, or Eve, had sat down next to you after asking you this question. The both of you were on the roof of a building, legs dangling meters from the ground as you munch on your sandwich.
"I heard it from you", it was the truth, but you also knew who was under the yellow mask, so partially the truth?
"Are you sure?" You were pretty sure.
"Yes, I was standing not too far away, I mean I'm not hard of hearing" you joke, but something tells you that Eve's question is not really about Mark's name.
"Look, I'm gonna be forward with you" she turned around to face you completely as you took another bite of your sandwich, for a moment she thought about just asking where you had bought it, but then she revealed something she knew about you.
"I know your identity", the words leave you comically frozen, but there's nothing to laugh about really.
Silence, complete utter silence. You had stopped chewing, the air had grown still and there was no sound whatsoever. You slowly turned to face her, with cheeks full of food and eyes wide.
"Did you tell Mark?" That was what you were worried about?
"So he doesn't know? I guessed this was the reason why he acted so differently towards 'Ladybug'. But no, it's not my place to do that, but I think I should also ask you that question." She was calm as she generated in her hands a sandwich, probably hungry too after seeing you eat with so much joy. You had found out her identity just by using your brain, after all there was no way that Samantha Eve Wilkinsâthe same girl who looked and sounded like Atom Eve, the girl who befriended Mark after he got his powersâwas not the superhero in pink.
"To whom would I reveal your identity? I mean, as far as you're concerned my kwami knows about you", you opened your bottle of water and washed down the lingering taste of meat, veggies and home made bread.
"Kwami?"
-
You don't really know how much time you had spent with Eve, talking about your powers, about college, work and so on, but you were glad you had the opportunity. One conversation led to another and suddenly you were vulnerable:
"I mean, I might be smart but that's it. There's nothing really special about 'Ladybug'", the both of you were still on that roof fully suited up, your feet swinging mindlessly.
"You're kidding right? You defeated a villain with a hairpin and you can repair any damage. Your powers are similar to mine, but you have the creativity that I lack. My powers are almost limitless, but I just act in survival mod all the time".
"Creativity won't save me in the long run, against viltrumites I'm useless, while you can hold your ground. I'm not fast enough, strong enough to compete. I'm not weak but it's not enough, you know?".
For a moment Eve was silent, thinking her next words carefully.
"Well, you don't need to be that strong. You're not facing threats alone, you can rely on others." Eve was not a person of words, she was not as impulsive as Mark, and was not insensitive, but she wasn't used to comforting others.
"You need to embrace your confidence, and honestlyâit's not really about thisâbut you need to tell Mark. That man is going crazy over you". With that you choked on saliva and got up.
"Eve! Don't lie about this!" You exclaimed with a high pitch. You were already delusional enough to hope that maybe you could fuck around with Mark without him knowing who you were in the long run, she didn't need to feed your delusions by saying that Mark was crazy for you, it was unfair.
"Why would I lie?" She laughed hard as she also got up, she couldn't really believe how ridiculous the situation was, how stupid the both of you were.
"You need to grow some balls [name], I mean it". You pushed her lightly as she laughed before saying goodbye and flying away.
.
.
"Why do you need to grow some balls?"
"JESUS MARK" you're startled as you jump a little, your eyes wide as you turn around to find Invincible standing in all his spandex glory.
"It's 'Invincible' to you Ladybug" He says before crossing his arms and looking at the city.
"yeah, yeah 'Invinciboy', tell that to the news, not me", your smirk is the one of a cat as you tip toe on the edge of the roof. You might not see his eyes, but you know Mark, you know every kind of expression he makes.
And if that isn't one of irritation than you never knew him.
"Don't call me that".
"You have a lot of demands today, first you eavesdrop on a private conversation and then you pretend I call you 'Invincible'? You let everyone else call you Mark when no civilians are around". You express your opinion with nonchalance, with a teasing smile as you take a good look at him, at your Mark in spandex (or in polymer fiber or whatever the material isâ).
"I wasn't eavesdropping and you're not like others for the record" , for a moment you think he will add a "because you're special, so you can call me however you want", but you know he won't, so you start to question if he at least considers you a friend.
"Aren't we at least friends?"
"Why would we be friends?" There's no evil, no malice, nothing. It's just a mere observation after all.
Your playful expression vanishes for a second, your gaze falls on his eyes once again as you try to understand if the words are genuine or just a way to rouse you.
"Why would we not be friends? We fight together, joke around, talk, spend timeâ"
"No. We don't do that. At least I don't, you do all the joking, the talking, the laughing. All you do is stick to me like some octopus". You're not even close to him and he can feel the lingering sensation of your gloved hands against him. He calls you an octopus but then he just clings on you like a leech in your civilian form? How hypocritical can he be?
"You should be glad that at least one girl is giving you some sort of attention". You might be hurt, but you recover fast. There's no right or wrong right now, even if it's mostly your fault. You wish you had the confidence to solve this mess, but instead you fuel whatever this is under this confident façade you have created for yourself.
"That's a lot coming from you, you look like a lost puppy every time I even look at you". A hard jab, one that makes you more vicious. One that makes you laugh internally, since that's the face he makes whenever you're too busy to give him some semblance of attention.
"I don't get why you're so pressed about it. The fans love us, the GDA loves us as a duo. You're the only one so against it". You don't understand why things always need to be so complicated with him.
"Um, hello??" He says mockingly with sass. "Maybe it's because I don't like you?"
You laugh a little, because obviously he doesn't like you. He didn't like you before you became a superhero, it was foolish to think that maybe he would change his mind now, fuck Eve for saying otherwise and getting your hopes up.
"Oh really? Are we in fifth grade? Let's hear it then, who does the little baby like?" You don't bother to cover up the mix of emotions you're feeling right now as you mock him with your tone, you might have cried on the spot if it wasn't for the anger that kept you going, which was directed at him and yourself. Out of every plan, out of every crazy stunt you have pulled, trying to start anew with your secret identity has to be the one to go wrong? (And all for what? Because you don't have the balls to face Mark? Pathetic.)
His skin reddens, only slightly, as he looks away. Now he even dares to become shy? Fuck wrapping your hands around him, the yo-yo in your hands looks too good to not be used right now.
"It's not your business, but this" he makes a gesture with his hands to indicate whatever is going on with you and him, "needs to stop". Especially when he can't even make a move on [name] properly.
"Oh yeah, gee I wonder who it is with your busy social life", your tone is acidic as you mock him, "Mmm, let's list all the girls you know and find out, is that okay for you 'invinciboy'?" The man grits his teeth and is about to go away, tired from your bullshit when he halts as he hears you listing names and things you shouldn't really know about his life.
"Is it Eve? Mm, from your face I guess no. But it would have been a good guess, many exes who remain friends usually go back together", your face is gleeful, but in a mocking way, focused on his expression as you try to solve him, like one of your puzzles.
"Oh, oh! Is it Amber? She was your first after all."
"Whatâ"
"Mm, I don't think it's anyone from the team either, is there a possibility you might be gay then? Do you like William perhaps, Gayson? I don't have other female options available and the best friends to lovers troupe is really commonâ" Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, you're no longer touching the ground and Mark is holding you up by your suit.
"How do you know all of this?" His voice is deep as his glare cuts your skin like butter, there's no sympathy in his tone, the words are the ones of a man who doesn't mess around with the people he cares about. It's the first time you've seen this side of him directed at you.
"Has your tiny little pebble brain thought that maybe, just maybe, I'm someone you know?" You seethe as you face the consequences of your actions, you know that Mark could rip you to shreds right now since he has the upper hand, but you don't care, because he is not a monster like you, so you know he won't snap your neck for running your tongue.
"Then tell me who you are, if you're so sure you actually know me" Was he insinuating that you, a hero, were a stalker? You knew he had at least somewhat the right to believe it, due to the information, but you weren't that bad to make such an assumption. (You were already this horrible in his eyes, and he didn't even know your worst side yet.)
"Why don't you answer my question first?" His face is still contorted in rage, yet he hasn't abandoned all common sense like you. He ponders for a second if he's making the right choice, the right deal.
"If you dare to hurt them I swearâ"
"Woah, woah! Pretty boy, I would never. You're not that pretty". It's not the right moment and your joke doesn't land, yet after this illuminating discussion you realize that none of them really did, because Mark doesn't like you and he doesn't even trust you as a coworker.
"After I tell you who it is, you will reveal your identity to me". You freeze slightly, your pupils shrink at the possibilities of a disastrous aftermath. Your curiosity is too much though, you really need to know who this person is.
"Yes, yes, okay", you say, but not before rolling your eyes.
He looks at you for a second more, to see if you're honest under all this fake bravado, before sighing and letting you free from his hold.
"Do you know the bakery down the road?"
It's almost a mutter but you hear it anyway so you don't bother to mock him with a derisory "what did you say?", you're getting tired of this, yet not tired enough to just give up. This is the moment when you can finally find peace and accept that maybe Mark wasn't meant for you. (Deep down it's useless thinking this way, since you will never get over him.)
"I buy often from there", your words are almost phrased like a question. Maybe it's because you work there and there are only two people and an old lady running the place.
"It's one of the girls working, her name isâ"
"Anna?"
"[name]".
The name repeats in your head like a loop as you become a statue, your smile fades as you come to the realisation that it was always you at the end of the day. Not Amber, not Eve, not Ladybug, just you.
[name].
You've tried so hard to fix things, to have a second chance. Now you're face to face with the fact that you had never needed one, that all your overthinking, all your crying about him, avoiding him, all your fears and insecurities could have been avoided if you had had the courage to talk to him.
You're not happy, you're not relieved.
You have ruined everything.
He loves you, of course, he has just said it. But he loves [name], his childhood friend, the girl who loves baking, the [name] he remembers. He doesn't love Ladybug, the superhero version of you, the one whose trauma changed her in a confused mess. His distrust and dislike is palpable, you wouldn't doubt after your epiphany that he might be disgusted too if he knew about the blood you have shed in Paris.
You're breathing hard, you know that he will hate you if he discovers your identity. Not just Ladybug, but you. (But who are you really? Are you [name]? The childhood friend that stuck to him like glue. Are you Ladybug? Are you something else you don't know of?)
You think you're crying as you walk back towards the edge of the roof, your only escape route, since running away is the only thing you're good at. (It almost reminds you of that time when Nolan comforted you, it was also the last time you had seen him and Mark doesn't tell you what happened when he comes to the bakery. He doesn't even talk about his family, about his little purple brother you saw on the streets when you were patrolling).
"Hey, are you okay?" He is tentative in his steps as he tries to approach you, he had expected some sort of reaction from you, but not this.
"I need to go", it doesn't sound right because of the tears, from the snot in your nose that's keeping you from saying the words right, together with the hiccuping.
He finds it hard to let you go after you promised to reveal your identity, yet it's even harder when you cry the same way his girl does.
He almost reaches to hug you but you're already far away, he can see your silhouette swinging from building to building. He could fly and catch you, but he doesn't find it in him to be harsh on you again after seeing your crying face.
-
("Aren't you glad [name]? He loves you!" Tikki is buzzing around happily as you try to collect yourself, as if you're the broken puzzle that needs solving.
"You don't get it, do you? He doesn't love me, he doesn't know who I am anymore, he loves the person he remembers, the one who he thinks I am. Not this mess. I thought that if he fell in love with Ladybug, it would have been easier for him to accept the person I'm now". Your hands are shaking as you look at them, as if by looking at them you could remember the sensation of the warm blood coating them.
"Let's think in a positive way, at least you know the truth..!" Tikki stops in her tracks as she sees your deranged expression.
"You and your damned truth. I don't need to know the truth!" You glare at the kwami with the build up hatred you have for yourself and this hero life that was forced upon you.
"I don't give a shit about the truth!" Your voice gets higher with every point you make, Tikki can't help but flinch at you.
"I just want Mark" you plead, almost like a prayer and not a demand. Tikki can't help but be angry at you, at the fact that you won't listen, you just drown in your sorrows even when there's a life-saver around your body.)
-
You don't talk to anyone, not even to Tikki, you don't go to work and you ask your parents to tell others that you are sick. They are worried about you, sometimes they come inside your room and sit on the bed, they tell you that they are there if you need them. You don't answer, you never do, and you feel like a bad daughter, you don't deserve this coddling when it's your fault, but you know that it's not like you can accept their help, since it's not even a possibility in their minds that you might be a superhero.
Your friends and coworkers are worried, Mark especially. You feel guilty about causing all this distress, but it's not enough to stop you from looking at flights for Paris. Would everything be better if you just gave back the miraculous? Tikki might not outright say it but you can see the way she looks at you. The way she judges you, scrutinizes you. You know she would gladly go back to Marinette if given the opportunity.
You never book the flight, you just look and think about it under the warm blankets as the bright light from the laptop makes your eyes red. Tikki can see what you're doing, yet she doesn't stop you. Maybe it's some sick test to see if you have the guts to actually leave behind one of the identities you have created, or maybe it's not, and she genuinely wishes you would press it and get this over with.
You never make up your mind, you just rot in indecision, like you always do.
Like you do with your life, with Mark and with everything else.
You don't know what is going on with the outside world, the GDA has contacted you multiple times but it's better they get used to your absence since you're reluctant to go back to the team. You're a coward, they might need you for something important, and your stomach churns at another responsibility you are avoiding.
"[name]?" Tikki after weeks of giving you the silent treatment, has finally decided to grace you with her presence. You wonder if she feels remorse for having blindly accepted Marinette's choice. You look at her, she's clearly worried and she's trying to find the right words to not activate the bomb in the room.
You don't bother to wait for her and just go to the bathroom. The one that stares at you in the mirror is not your reflection, or at least you hope that it's not the reflection of who you truly are. (A shiver runs through your spine, you knew that the black cat had gone crazy. You wonder if maybe he had been just misunderstood, if he had been just like you. Instead of trying to find a better solution to help him, you gave him a painful death.)
Suddenly as you wash your face you feel something trying to keep your hair from getting wet. You see the little creature that has been by your side until now holding your hair up, she's looking at you with love and sadness, not hate.
And you feel guilty, because how could you be harsh to her when she's always trying to fix your messes?
You repeat "sorry" all over as she dries your face with a towel, she doesn't say anything, she doesn't need to. She always knew that you were never going anywhere, but she wanted you to know that she was also not going anywhere.
While Marinette had been great, every miraculous holder had been a unique experience and you weren't the exception.
You didn't see it yet, you didn't see yourself the way Tikki, Eve, Mark and everyone else did, but maybe one day you would and she wasn't about to leave your side before that moment.
Because she loved you, not the girl who liked to bake, not the hero, not whatever distorted version you had in mind of yourself.
Just you.
"Do you feel better?" Tikki's voice is calm, gentle as she puts the towel aside.
"I think I doâI do", your words feel like a promise. A promise to be better than yesterday, for the people you love, for those who need you, for yourself, even if you don't know who she is yet.
-
"Have you read any messages yet?" Tikki says with her tiny cheeks full of chocolate chip cookies that had just come out of the oven.
"No, I don't think I will for now."
"[name]..." You glance at the little creature who's giving you an accusatory glare with no real heat behind it. You just smile and cut up the vegetables, the onions are merciless to your already tired eyes as you're hit by their pungent defence, but your knife is far more cruel as you dice them without remorse to prepare your five star meal (fried rice).
"I mean, I know I should let them know if I'm alright, but I just want to enjoy my peace a little more", you take out the left over rice and put it on the counter, the vegetables are sizzling and the aromas that cloud the kitchen make you sigh.
You're fine, not great yet, but for now being contempt in just cooking for yourself and your little friend a meal is enough.
Cooking is a big part of your life, one of your defining abilities. Your skills make people wonder how you became this good at such a young age.
You don't say to them that you cook when you're stressed, you cook when you're sad, happy, and even when you're angry.
You've lost some of the creativity over the years, pursuing your passion at an academic level has replaced fantasy with skill and technique. You have always known that academic discipline kills passion, and it did kind of murder the love you had for cooking.
But what else could you do if not that? It was either following your childhood dreams or working in an office.
You don't know where Tikki is as you lose yourself in your train of thoughts, completely focused on the task at hand. You stir, mix and add whatever is missing almost on autopilot and you sway your hips to the rhythm of the music that is playing on your phone.
In your little safe haven you don't know what's going on outside. You don't know about the dangers your coworkers are facingâthe dangers Mark is facingâbecause the one time you seclude yourself from the rest of the world, it's also the one time it's about to be destroyed by alternative versions of your childhood friend.
You don't even think about what could be happening outside until you feel strong arms around your waist.
( "why do you always leave the window open?"
It was a bad habit of yours to forget to close the kitchen window, but your neighbourhood had always been safe. "I mean, it's not like we're in a dangerous area and the kitchen sometimes needs some air", you don't look at him in the eyes as you answer, you don't need to, because the bangs on the table and the almost moan that comes out of his mouth are enough to tell you that he is enjoying the food.
"Is it good?" You laugh proudly as you throw a glance in his direction.
"Not just good, it's better than my mom's, I'm not kidding", that's praise right there, better than his mom even? That's something to blush for.
"I'm not that good, Debbie is on another level", you jump a little as you feel him peer over your shoulder to look at what else you're making.
"Next time I go to your house I'll tell her you said this", there's a teasing glint in your eyes as you turn your head around to face him.
"It's not like she would disagree, she literally loves you more than me" he scoffs even if his lovingly warm eyes betray how he truly feels.)
You gasp at the sudden contact and instinctually elbow the person that's holding you so close against him to the point where there's no space between the both of you, no air that keeps away the heat radiating from whoever is behind you. As the hit lands you're not met with an abdomen, but with a wall that doesn't even budge.
"hey, it's me baby".
The voice is raspy, almost breathless as Mark whispers in your ear. You suppress a shiver as you try to create some space between your face and his, and while doing so that's when you take a good look at him.
"What theâwhat's with the mohawk? And Mark can you let me go pleaseâ" you plead before yelping from your stomach fat getting squeezed as the man behind you just sighs and just nuzzles his face in the crook of your neck, his short hair tickling you in the process.
"you don't like it?" You're speechless at Mark's anomalous behaviour and looks, but it's been quite a while since you got out. It's wrong to be so pleased about the situation, about the domesticity of it. You have dreamed of Mark coming home and hugging you like this while you cook your favourite meals. Now though it just feels wrong, especially after last time. You could not in good conscience take advantage of the situation without addressing the many problems at hand.
"No, it looks good" the rice is done, but you're not focused on that as you hear a deep chuckle from Mark, who just smirks and leaves feather like kisses on your bare neck. You squirm as his weight and arms are blocking you from escaping his gentle assault at your neck. A whine builds up in your throat, frustrated at your helplessness.
You know the bastard is enjoying this, you can feel his smile as he almost bends you on the stove.
"Justâhey what are you doing?" You don't know what stars have aligned to put you in this position, but you need to put a stop to this. The escalation of the situation is worrisome as teeth graze your skin, as you feel his groin against your ass.
"Can't a man just appreciate his girl?" Not when you're not his girl.
"Don't call me that" you manage to say, as your flushed face betrays you.
You don't realise that he is confused by your statement, since you can't turn around to face him, but you do feel his muscles tense. What gives you the chance to escape is the smoke coming out of the pan, the rice is not inedible but it's just slightly charred by the looks of it.
"The rice!" Your suddenly raised voice and the smoke that hit his senses made him slightly loosen his vice grip around your warm waist. It only took one second for him to recollect himself, but it had been enough for you to just step aside and not feel his hot breath on your neck.
Having the possibility to turn around you can finally have a good look at him.
Is it bad if you say he looks wrong?
You were gone for two years and there's barely any change, you're gone for a couple of weeks and this man does a whole 360?
And the eyebags, his eyes...
They are so dark and focused, almost predatory as he looks at you up and down.
"I really missed you babe" he sighs, eyes half lidded, like a full lion after a meal and he hitches closer, because unlike the feline he could be satiated.
"Mark, you're acting weird today, are you alright?"
"I've never been better", his gaze is loving as he settles for grabbing your face with his handâsquishing your cheeks in the processâand giving you a peck on the lips, as if this was a daily occurrence. It's heart warming, soft, and gentle. It's not a passionate kiss, but it's enough to make you freeze. After all it's just the start of something more as his hand settles on your hip.
"Markâno, stop. We can't." There's a frown on your face as he lets you push his face aside with shaking hands. His face is confused and you don't understand why, what did he expect?
"Why not? Come on [name], don't tease me.." he's almost desperate as he longs for your touch once more, even the hands that keep pushing him away are somewhat palliative as he can once again feel your soft skin against him once more.
"Because it's wrong, we're not together and there's a lot you don't know about me that I haven't told you about. You would hate me if I told you." He chuckles, no, no, he laughs whole heartedly, wiping some of the tears that are about to fall from your eyes. So this lame ass version of himself is not together with you? And more importantly, you're hiding something from him?
"Babe, babe", you're tormenting him with your flushed face, with your slightly red eyes.
"I could never hate you"
You stare at him as if he just hit you with a bucket of cold water.
On the other side of the room your phone vibrates on the table from the quantity of messages you're receiving.
Mark: are you okay?
Mark: hey, answer me? Are you home?
Mark: [name], it's important
Tikki looks at the messages with a horrified face, so she flies in a zone of the room where you can see her, even with the doppelganger in your way.
When you lock eyes she rapidly shakes her head while indicating the men in front of you and your phone.
Mark is calling
You don't hide the expression you make, it's priceless how your eyes shrink and your mouth falls agape. You don't know if he has realised that you know now, you don't know what his intentions are with you, but he had seemed so sincere, there was no way he would hurt you? What version of Mark could be so sadistic to toy with you before hurting you?
"Love, are you okay?" His tone has shifted, the words are another way of saying: "Oh, so you know now? No more faking?"
Because he knows you're not okay, and you're too smart to be fooled twice.
As you move backwards he moves forward, amused by this little waltz he is entertaining you with.
You move right using the table as a support, and he follows you.
It's fun, it's hilarious even. You were so pliable in his hands, like putty, whining about the contact even if your body craved more, and now you were making this laughable effort at evading him. You were lucky he loved you. He wonders where your Mark went wrong when you're as eager to hold him as he is.
Your back hits the open window behind you, the air is cold on your face as you turn around and look at how high up you are.
"There's nowhere to run now babe" he laughs amused as he hovers closer and closer, barely containing his desire to just finish what he started back at the stove.
"You really think so?" A smirk appears, eyes shining in a way he has never seen before, and then you do the most unexpected thing.
You jump out the window, he's not fast enough to grab you since you took him by surprise.
His heart leaps out of his throat, he almost doesn't want to see if you're splattered on the floor, your body just a stain on the floor as your organs are splattered here and there on the sideway.
As he flies outside instead of something gruesome, he's met with your suited up form bouncing around buildings as you try to create some distance between the both of you. Or maybe you're creating some other scheme to fool him once again.
When your gaze meets his, time freezes and you playfully stick his tongue out to him, to mock him, laugh at his foolish and cocky behaviour.
He laughs as one hand just covers his face.
Of course you had powers in this world, of course this was your secret.
Oh, this Mark was a real loser.
Hellooo, I hope you enjoyed part two! Honestly out of every variant, Mohawk Mark is my favourite. Originally I had just planned to finish this here, but then I just got carried away with the last part, lol.
I've seen a couple of people doing this and I couldn't stop thinking about it, English is not my first language and this is my first story on Tumblr, nevertheless I hope you enjoy!
Before you read: reader is not weak (I don't really give a shit about power scaling even if it's ladybug), possessive/protective Mark (headcanon: viltrumites are a rational species but they have an irrational subconscious part that chooses a 'mate' which they will love until either they die or their partner does. In the second case, it's not out of the question that they might have other partners, but they will never truly love them because their heart belongs to the partner their subconscious has chosen for them. That's one of the reason why Viltrumites focus more on reproduction than love, since it's an irrational weakness they can't control), mostly narration and monologues, they both want eachother but are too dumb, I tried to not make anyone ooc (if I did, sorryyy), childhood friends to lovers, there is not smut but there are some things you could consider suggestive I guess, lastly but not least, violence and blood.
Synopsis: you and Mark have been childhood friends for as long as you can remember, you have known each other since you were in diapers! Your families were as close as they can be. With all of this said, you never understood why he grew distant to the point where you were strangers. Now you're back from Paris, you're a superhero, you have faced countless foes, yet, you don't think you're truly ready to face Mark. Lucky for you, he doesn't know who's under the mask of your alter ego.
There's a fine line between wanting to smash his head on the sideways and hug him breathless, a fine line dividing the most jaw dropping beating and the most passionate of kisses. You can't believe that someone like Mark Grayson, your dear beloved Mark, is causing so much turmoil inside your mind.
You can't really remember a life before Mark, because there was never one. Your parents had become friends after one tired nurse had brought you in Debbie's arms, who had been so tired that she didn't recognise that who she was holding was not her newborn. Of course, after not even half an hour, you were returned to your parents safe and sound. This experience made your mothers bond and therefore the path to your blooming friendship was created.
Needless to say, the both of you were attached to the hip.
Oh? Mark was at the park? Boom! You were also at the park, playing with him whatever game he had in mind. You were doing some extra curricular activity at school? Bam! Now so was Mark. The both of you knew everything about eachother: from your favourite color to your most embarrassing secret, from one peculiar preference to every little habit.
You had always been an an introverted child, awkward and not really sociable. Yet, with Mark at least, you never had to worry about anything, because why worry when he knew everything and had seen nearly everything about you? Why worry when you had such a caring person as your support? You didn't consider yourself clingy, more like affectionate.
Everytime you found a new recipe you went to his house to bake it with him and sometimes his mum, every time he had to go to the comic book store you were with him listening to his rantings about Science dog. Every single time you were somewhere, everyone knew that Mark wasn't far behind.
Your friendship while cute and wholesome to people who actually knew you (even if it took so much mental strength to not bash you and Mark's oblivious head with a baseball bat), it looked to be on the border of something more to outsiders. You had never been uncomfortable expressing your love to Mark: hugs? Kisses on the cheeks? Being all over him and at least touching him in some sort of way? They were daily occurrences. Why would it be weird? Why were they necessarily romantic gestures?
It's not like your touch lingered far more each time, as if you couldn't get enough. It's not as if when you went back home you smelled so much like him that people asked if you used cologne. At some point you couldn't argue with the fact that you were constantly craving his presence, his touch and maybe even something more.
(His lips had always looked so pretty when he ranted passionately about the comics he was so obsessed with, how would it feel if he was just as obsessed with you? You wondered how it would feel to be the only object of his attentions, just like he was yours.)
Mark wasn't really any better. Maybe on some degree he was worse.
His parents, even his father, were really, extremely, supportive of a possible relationship between you and him. New people he met genuinely thought that the both of you were together, and were left speechless when you said otherwise:
"we're not together" you'd say with laughter between each word, giggling at the silliness of it all. You had always had such a pretty laugh, so mesmerising. "Mark wishes we were together! Right, Mark?" The joke would make him laugh because of the irony of it all, because of the fact that if you hadn't been there he wouldn't have bothered to correct them at all.
Why would he exactly? With the way you two were constantly at each others necks, the only thing that needed to be done was to make it official. ( He doesn't want to think that if he was less scared of ruining your friendship, he would do that in a heartbeat.)
Sometimes he did feel bad about not being clear about your relationship, since he just blatantly ignored the question, leaving it unanswered. Yet, when you pressed your chest and forehead against his back, hugging him from behind, and he could feel the heat radiating from your soft and pliable body, he forgot all the shame and guilt. Why would he leave the person that was destined from birth to be with him to someone else?
Why would he not touch you in public? The both of you hugged frequently, you kissed his cheek, on public transportation or in general he always had a hand on your waist, when walking your hands were always holding (unless he was carrying something for you), on the couch and on the bed you were a tangled mess of limbs with his head resting on your stomach as you stroked his hair. The nights in which you both had fallen asleep like this in the arms of the other were so many to keep track, there had been so many mornings with you waking him up softly while caressing his cheek and whispering in his ear.
(he can't shake off how good it felt to wake up with you by his side, he wished all mornings were like this.)
How had you not kissed yet?
That was a question that kept him awake and a question that left his parents confused. Whenever they came home the both of you were always together doing various activities, and whenever Debbie came home late from work and there was no sound of Mark, her husband would smile knowingly and point upstairs and she would find him cuddled with you, soundly asleep. The hold he had on you was so tight that Debbie believed that not even her husband's viltrumite strength could pull Mark away from you.
Yet, the chokehold you had on him was even tighter.
Nolan had realized this not from the moment Mark had forced them to recreate a matrimony due to the fact that he had professed his love with a candy ring, not even when he had caught him reciting in front of a mirror the part of the prince, that he absolutely needed to have in the fifth grade school play since you were chosen as the princess.
No, no, what had made him realise it was the fact that Mark seemed stronger, faster, better, when around you, even if he didn't have any powers yet. It was not a massive noticeable boost, but just enough to make a difference under the keen eye of Nolan Grayson. It was in the way his boy couldn't seem to stay away from you for more than five minutes, it was in the way Mark couldn't keep his hands to himself when around you and how he seemed to preen proudly just like a peacock whenever you either reciprocated his touches or initiated them.
For Debbie it was a normal crush, but her husband would beg to differ.
Like all viltrumites, Mark was not exempt from the instincts that drove his cilization, so different and yet so compatible with humans. Mark, like all viltrumites, just like him, was love sick and possessive because of the unknown instincts that plagued the viltrumites' rationality. Undoubtedly, Mark's subconscious had claimed you and it pushed Mark to protect you and be all over you. To give in to one's irrational half was a mistake, a weakness, yet Nolan couldn't bring himself to separate the two of you when it was just because of this that Nolan had seen at least a glimpse of his heritage in Mark.
And it had been all thanks to you.
Nolan genuinely liked you, you were a good and smart kid after all. Yet, what he appreciated the most was the fact that you were the confirmation that his son was just a late bloomer. If not for this he might have been against his son's silly behaviour and crush, after all he would have preferred someone more powerful (viltrumite), but this fact and your intelligent mind made up for it. So in his books the only human worth his time, was you.
Therefore everytime his wife came home late from work and asked where his son was, he just smiled and pointed upstairs.
Your predicament was damning, because why was Mark avoiding you? Giving you the cold shoulder? Acting as if you were mere acquaintances? Every time you tried to hug him or kiss his cheek he would move, not in a noticeable way to make it embarrassing for you, but he still moved to make sure he avoided your touch. Every single time you tried to talk to him he would respond to you in short sentences and with quick strained smiles, to then go back to what he was doing. Each damned time you tried to go to his house and spend time with him, for some reason, he wasn't home.
The former you could understand, maybe you were just unlucky, but the latter? No, no.
Mark was plainly avoiding you and now it was even more noticeable: why did he walk away each time you approached him? Why did he not walk home with you anymore? Why was he sitting so far away from you in class? You were going crazy, but you would eat shit before not finding out the reason why.
Since you were a kid, you had been granted an incredible intelligent and observant mind: not even one single tiny detail could go unnoticed by you, not even one subtle change. You were awkward and socially inept, sure, but your problem solving skills were top tier. Being in a group with you in school was like a blessing in disguise, it didn't matter that you were that clumsy unatlethic girl that couldn't form a coherent sentence without Mark as support, from the moment you were assigned in the group all the members would breathe a sigh of relief. No matter how hard a problem, how hard a test, how difficult a situation: you always seemed to find a solution.
Superstitious people would say your ancestors had done really great deeds to grant you this blessing, others would say that you were just extremely lucky, but deep down everyone knew you were just one of a kind, the unstoppable kind.
You can't think of one time you had given up, you were just an unstoppable force that hadn't found it's immovable object yet (and surely Mark's change in behaviour was not going to be it).
You had noticed Mark's change in behaviour months ago, but they were slight differences not really worth focusing on or mentioning, at least when you had noticed them. (At least when he wasn't avoiding you yet).
His hands had become calloused, bruises had begun to appear over his whole body, and sometimes on his face, and while you had been really worried at first, he always had some sort of excuse to justify his beaten up body, which, by the way, had changed drastically. Mark had never been fat nor too skinny, so you wondered when he was pressed against you so nicely why you could feel toned abs, your mind travelled miles to find out why your Mark was now ripped with a marvelous back and strong shoulders.
"Mark!" You had screamed out his name when out of nowhere on the way home he had grabbed you with so much ease and thrown you over his shoulder. You don't really remember what you were talking about, but you had been teasing him about something and then you had sprinted in a run while laughing. In just a second you were hanging from his body like a sack of potatoes, gaping and with rosy cheeks from what had happened. Sure, you were unathletic, sure, you didn't have the strength of a man, but there was no way, simply no way, that your Mark, the same Mark who read comics everyday, had just grabbed you and put you over his shoulder in matters of seconds with only one hand. Back home you could still feel his hands on your lower back and thighs, and remembering how easy he had manhandled you made you weak in the knees. (Oh, how you wished his hands had travelled further).
His touches were rougher, his hold was more firm and unescapable, and it excited you. (You don't want to entertain the possibility that you liked this change so much to just completely have dismissed the causes of it. God, you were so enamored with this nerd it was crazy.)
Just now you realize that the problems might have started when he had begun to treat you like you were made of glass, as if even with one gentle hold you would crumble under him. It was subtle, almost undetectable, but it was there: the constant feeling that you would shatter and pulverize in his hands if he even so slightly grazed your skin.
You can't even seem to shake the fact that you couldn't surprise him anymore, it was as if he could feel your presence before you could even try to spook him (or just touch him like usual). There were so many things that were wrong, how could you just brush off how tired he was? How busy he always seemed to be? What was happening in his life for him to always look beat up?
You knew that people out there had superpowers, but it was just so difficult to say that Mark had them too. It was difficult to accept the possibility that Mark could be a superhero until his father slipped. (Yet, why did that new superhero, "Invincible", coincidentally appeared when your dear Mark disappeared?)
"Are you alone? Where is Mark?" You were used to going to the Grayson's house, it was like your second home and nobody minded, especially when you brought fresh pastries with you. "I thought you could tell me that Nolan", there was no point in calling him 'Mr.Grayson', this man was almost like a father to you. (You'd prefer to say in-law, but life is so unfair sometimes).
"I think it's time we have the talk, Y/n"
You were a bit taken a back by how serious he was, in his eyes there was...pity? Sadness? You didn't really know. Were you about to receive a sexual education talk? Did he think you and Mark had sex? (Some part of you wouldn't be surprised if he truly believed it).
"Mark...you know since he is a viltrumite.. he might not seek human company, or the company of non powered peopleâ"
"âviltrumite??"
"âI know the both of you have never been separated, I hope you won't take it too badly, I mean it's a lot to take inâ"
"sir, what do you mean 'viltrumite'??"
If he was honest, Nolan thought that by now you knew that two thirds of the Grayson's family was not exactly human, due to the fact that Mark had always told you everything (he had been so excited to have manifested his powers that in Nolan's mind you had probably known about them even before him). He knew you had never seen him come in the house with his costume on, since you were too busy focusing all your attention on Mark, but he couldn't believe that his son had never talked to you about this. It took about an hour for the man to explain the situation, and while it didn't exactly hurt that Mark was not 100% human, you were really rethinking your friendship.
You obviously didn't expect him to hide this big of a secret, especially when the two of you had been so close. It was just that your judgement was now clouded by a million of different self deprecating thoughts: were you not enough for Mark anymore now that he had powers? Had you been too clingy to the point were he had to keep something to himself, because you knew too much? Was the fact that you were a mere human the reason why he was avoiding you? If so, why was he not avoiding his other friends, like William for example?
Had you become unbearable?
Maybe now with all the stuff on his plate, he needed someone who set him free. Not someone that caged him with her clinginess and obnoxious presence.
"kid, are you okay?"
Someone like Amber maybe. (You wish it could go unnoticed by you how his gaze always seems to go to her now that you're out of the picture. Not standing beside him, but far away, has made you see just to who his attention goes to, and it's to everyone but you).
"Breathe, you're with me, it's okay let it all out", was Nolan hugging you? (Nolan doesn't know what came over him, he doesn't know why him, a viltrumite, had felt the urge to comfort you. It's not because he loves you like a daughter surely).
You think you need some fresh air, you think you need new lungs actually, because why were you so sad? Your chest was feeling so heavy, the world was so blurry and why was your makeup coming off?
You don't think you had ever left house Grayson feeling so ashamed.
Mark didn't know if being distant had been the best course of actions, he saw how much it hurt you but this was better than the suffering you would face by being with him. It wasn't just the thought of someone using his love for you against him, it was more a whole series of things that made him realize how fragile you were, so painfully fragile to the point were he himself was a danger to you.
(For him you might as well have hung the stars from how ethereal you looked, you were unreal. He doesn't think he could forgive himself if he ever so slightly hurt you unintentionally, you just get him so worked up that it's nearly impossible to control his strength. You make it so difficult to be delicate when he would just like to melt and become one with your body.)
This was a momentarily solution badly executed, at the end of the day you didn't know about his second identity, so you were safe from the horrors he had to face. Yet, that didn't mean you could escape the possibility of him causing you pain if he sticked close to you. William had argued with him about this, saying that he at least should have talked about this with you, since communication was key (but it's not like William knew about his second identity, yet).
But how could he do it?
There was a lot to unpack, and revealing his identity meant making you face more risks. Why couldn't it be so easy? He really missed you, but the fear of hurting you was stronger. If it meant that he had to stay away for a little while, than it was fine, it was okayish.(It was not).
His father had petrified him with his gaze after he had asked if Y/n had stopped by, since there were freshly baked pastries on the counter (you always smelled like baked goods, he just wishes he could eat you up). He didn't say anything afterwards but it was clear that he wasn't particularly happy about something. His mother had tried to dissipate the tension but it was clear that the family dinner was not going to run smoothly that night.
"Why didn't you tell [name] you are a viltrumite?" There was something in his voice, he doesn't know what it was, but it wasn't reassuring.
"I just didn't think it was important" then he saw his father's expression falter and he clenched his fists tightly.
"You didn't think it was important to tell her about your heritage? This is your future we're talking about!" He screamed. (Nolan was still set on conquering earth with Mark, so obviously you needed to at least know that his son was not human if he wanted you around in the big picture).
"It's not a big deal! You said that less people know, the better!"
"But we're not talking about anyone, are we, Mark? Just like it's not a big deal the fact that everyone can see from a mile away how smitten you are, you went from not being able to keep your hands off her to keep your distance with her!" His mom then yelled his father's name from the shock, but it was late.
"What?" He was now looking at Debbie, anger still in his face. "It's not like they were being subtle about it, you know that you were afraid of finding them in a compromising position one of these days! Don't lie!" His mom was looking elsewhere and was unresponsive, yet it was clear that what his father had said was not a lie.
"She's not my girlfriend, we would have never done anything like that!"
"Mark, first of all, don't lie to us and yourself. Second of all, she might not be your girlfriend but she is your friend. Don't you understand that you might destroy whatever kind of relationship you have with her if you keep this up?" (Didn't his son understand that out of 8 billion humans they would enslave, he was giving him the chance to keep close the one that truly mattered?)
"It's better like this for her, it's much safer". The gears in his father's head had slowly started to move at his son's answer.
"Are you serious right now, Mark? Are you so weak that you can't control your strength? Is this what it is? I can't believe itâ", his father had closed his eyes and brought two fingers to massage his nose bridge.
"why do you care? Whatever I do with my friends is none of your business".
"Don't lie to yourself Mark, 'friends'? Don't make me laugh". His mom had long gotten up from the table, fed up with that nonsense. Nolan had also gotten up and followed her, he could hear mom arguing with his father about how harsh he had been, but not about what he had said.
Now he was left alone contemplating his choices and the entire evening with a cold plate of food at the table, his head was resting on his crossed forearms and his eyes were shut tightly.
(Why did he decide to leave you again? Ah, he was scared.)
You had never travelled much, but you weren't kidding when you had realized you needed fresh air. Next thing you knew, you were on an airplane to one of Paris's best cooking schools. (You don't think that after this revelation you could have handled seeing Mark, so you were lucky when you came home that night and found the acceptance latter on the table with your joyous parents to cheer you up. You had applied to other cooking schools nearby, but this one was your dream).
You weren't there for when William discovered his identity, for when he got demolished by his father and killed tons of people, you weren't there when Mark realized just how weak he was when he got beat up the second time by another viltrumite, you weren't there when he acquired a purple baby brother.
You weren't there for a lot of things, but for him you were everywhere.
One part of you was in every thing he did, the other was in the girls he had dated after you had left. Amber and Eve shared so many similarities with you, and while they were beautiful and special in their own way, his true desire was to actually be with you. (He remembers the meeting with his father and Amber, he remembers the words he had said to him about you when beating him to a pulp, about how he would have never accepted any other human but you and how stupid he had been to have just given you up. "And for what reason?" His father had said with bloodied fists "because you are afraid and weak".)
William had told him that you had decided to go to France and stay in your aunt's apartment for a while. Your dream was to open a bakery, possibly here in the city, and make freshly baked goods everyday. What better place to learn how than Paris?
He shouldn't feel bitter about you leaving without saying goodbye, but it's not like he had given you any choice. He doesn't want to mull over the fact that you had actually left, that his wish for you to be safe from him had manifested itself to reality. To be frank, Mark can only dream about what your years had been for you in the city of love, since you had nearly cut all contact with William too from how busy you were apparently.
In fact he can only dream of you mixing batter and piping vanilla cream inside croissants or macarons, he doesn't dream of you fighting crime in a red and black polkadot costume. (He actually dreams of you hugging him close, caressing his hair and playing with his locks like you always did, he dreams of being able to lose himself in your touch, to show you how much he loves you, he dreams of worshipping every little mole, scar and curve on your body. He wouldn't leave any piece of skin unmarked, he swears it).
Because why would he even imagine you fighting crime? In what world his dear [name] would have to face battles to save the world in a skin tight costume? (He has imagined you wearing his costume, or one similar to Eve's, and he has had a hard on one two many times because of said thought.)
Life in Paris hadn't really been easy, to put it simply it had drastically changed you. You felt like a new person if you were honest, without Mark around, without the people you had shielded yourself with, you had learned to face the world headstrong overcoming any kind of social anxiety. Your future required social skills and cooperation, not only creativity and following the recipes to a tee.
Yet, sometimes you wish this had been the only change.
Your Aunt's friend, Marinette Dupain Chang, a famous parisinian fashion designer known worldwide (you still don't know how your aunt could be friends with someone like that, but you're glad), almost everyday participated in the baking classes for a couple of minutes.
"it's so nostalgic" she would say while mixing the dough and reminiscing about her parents own bakery, while also giving some tips. She wasn't a teacher, no, no, she was better. You think you'd learned more by spending that one day with her at her house than in a week at the prestigious school.
She was magnetic, her dark blue hair, nearly black, shone in the light just like her eyes did. Those eyes were mature, gentle and caring but they held something, some kind of pain you didn't know about, until, of course, Marinette herself revealed this to you on the day of her wedding anniversary.
Her husband had been dead for a couple of years now, and she couldn't be Ladybug anymore (you remember being speechless when a tiny ladybug like creature flew in front of your face to greet you), due to the fact that not only did Paris not really need her anymore, but she couldn't bring herself to fight without her dear Chat by her side. (You shed a few tears with her thinking about what you would do if one day Mark died fighting a villain, what would you do in that situation?)
You were skeptical to accept the proposal and you could see how hard it was for the kwami and Marinette to separate, but ultimately the 40 year old woman didn't back down and pushed the box in your hands, saying that nobody would be better than you to fill her place. (You want to disagree since she probably wouldn't let the world burn if it meant keeping safe the people you love).
So from then on you had to juggle both school and superhero duty and training. You weren't really fighting what Mark was fighting (you don't want to remember your fight with the cat miraculous owner), but thanks to being able to experiment with your powers, you had realized that even if you weren't athletic, when transforming your body felt 50 times stronger and faster, to the point were even holding a collapsing building with a yo-yo didn't make you break a sweat.
The critique had been harsh with you (especially after what had happened with your supposed "partner"), in fact the media kept comparing your feats with the ones of the previous miraculous owner. It's not like you minded, but sometimes it did sting you a little that no matter what incredibly creative strategy you pulled out of your ass with your lucky charm, you were still second. (Apparently you had to get used to being second, or even third, since you had heard from William that Mark had got together with Amber after you left and was now with Eve. But how could you be angry? Those girls were literally perfect, it was unfair, sure, but you couldn't be angry at Mark for choosing a girl who made him happy instead of his childhood friend.)
You could have stayed more, you could have opened a bakery right in the middle of Paris, but you were tired of Paris (you can never truly repair everything, can you? You can never wash the blood from your costume, from his clothes, from his unmoving body). You really missed home, you missed your family (you missed Mark).
"Sir, we are out of cinnamon rolls right now. You can buy something else or wait until a fresh batch is ready". When you said you wanted to work in a bakery, you weren't really thinking about facing rude customers. All these social interactions were draining you out and in the mean time Tikki was giggling in the pocket of your apron while munching on the 10th cookie of the day. She was in heaven to say the least, and sadly you couldn't say the same for you.
"[name]?" You could recognise this voice everywhere.
"Mark?" You almost couldn't believe you were finally face to face with him, after two eventful years you were back where you started: fearful. Due to the fact that seeing Mark was inevitable, you thought that after all you went through that seeing an old friend, your long time best friend (ex-best friend?), was going to be a breeze. You really wanted to talk to Mark, but not the boring conversations you have with strangers, no, you wanted to go back to how things were before, even if some part of you screamed that maybe, just maybe, you deserved better. To have that, you needed to address all the baggage of stuff that you didn't really want to open, why would you really? Why would you want to go back to how things were before? When you were an awkward social reject who had nobody else but Mark.
(You're contradicting yourself, do you or do you not want to go back to how things were? Now you have anyone but Mark and your heart cries, because why do you miss those times so much? Why do you miss him so much?)
"You're looking good" the compliment is like a breath of fresh air, because to Mark you are indeed one. It's not just because he is ecstatic to see you (if the place had been empty he would have jumped across the counter), but because you're literally glowing. You were already really gorgeous before, now though, having grown in your features, you are shining.
He should order but he really doesn't want to move his gaze away, were you always this captivating?
"thanks, you look great too! So, have you decided yet your order?" Mark looked good, yet your gaze seemed to fall on the red-head at the small pink table. She was focused on her phone and while you had seen photos of her, the selfies William had sent you didn't do her justice.
"I haven't decided yet, how have you been?" Mark doesn't think you noticed his little love struck gaze as you put a couple of croissants in a small bag for a sweet old lady, but he wouldn't have minded if you had.
(He just can't help but have some shred of hope that maybe he didn't ruin everything).
"Not much, honestly. What about you loverboy? Are you going to keep your lady waiting?" Your brows wiggled as you spoke with a joking tone. As you said the joke, your giggles didn't really reach your eyes, giving away partially how you kind of felt about the couple. You couldn't give up Mark but at the same time you couldn't accept the reality that you hadn't been enough.
His brows furrowed slightly as he took notice of your devoid laughter, suddenly remembering that you two were now mere acquaintances and not those two kids that were attached to the hip.
"Well, she was my girlfriend..."
"trouble in paradise, Grayson?" This was awkward, but joking had kind of become a coping mechanism at this point.
"No, no" he laughed, his eyes twinkling with mirth, believing that your joking nature was maybe you releasing some tension. "More like we just didn't work out, we just need different things, you know?" You didn't really know, because, unlike Mark, your dating repertoire had been devoid of men, or in general devoid of people as a whole. You had just been so busy that romance had practically flown over your head!
"Yeah, I get it... Anywaysss, what are you getting? Honestly I recommend the chocolate muffins or the strawberry cheesecake", you are actually smiling now, not because the air was less awkward, it was just that talking about your passion really got you going.
(You vaguely remember your first attempts at cooking, and they were done with dirt, sand and water. As decorations you used some grass or some rocks you found in the garden, then you proceeded to serve it to Mark on your little pink plastic toy plate. It was funny to think that your younger self genuinely thought he ate it, while instead he was throwing the brown goo on the ground whenever you were distracted.)
Mark was almost tempted to ask if he could just buy you instead, since you were the pastry he was craving. But he opted to keep his thoughts to himself since the joke would probably make you cringe so hard to the point where you wouldn't look at him for a while.
"I'll take two chocolate muffins", then with a nod you picked up the small brown bag with the bakery logo and you put two piping hot muffins inside it, then you focused on packing the goods and you stated the price after going to the register.
"Have a nice day, Mark" you said with the smile you give to all your clients, the one you give out of courtesy. Some might say one of relief after a painfully draining interaction (you don't recall a time when Mark had ever drained your social battery like this).
"Have a nice day too". It all went too fast in Mark's opinion, weren't your conversations supposed to last hours? Why hadn't he asked at least if you would have liked to hang out?
(Looking at you felt exactly like looking at those love interests that appeared in slow motion, with a pink background and with sparkles all around you. You can't blame him for getting enchanted by your beauty, just like you can't blame someone for having their jaw on the floor when looking at a incredible painting.)
Eve was waiting for him with a smile, immediately going for her muffins and giving hers a generous bite before walking out of the glass door.
"oh my god, they taste so good! Did they always make them this delicious?" Obviously not, since only your pastries could be this delicious and, while he hadn't eaten one in a long time, he still recognized the differences with the sweets made by other people.
"I know right? She's fantastic at baking", with that it was like a little lamp turned on on top of Eve's head and she asked him the fatal question:
"mm! Do you know her? You two seemed pretty close", in the tone of her voice her curiosity was made apparent, especially since she distantly remembered seeing you in school.
"She's an old friend" answered Mark while not looking at her in the eyes.
"You don't need to lie, you know. We're not together anymore, I don't care that much about who she is to you"
"She's a childhood friend but we drove apart after I got my powers.."
"That sucks I guess", in all honesty it also sucked that Mark hadn't bought more of those addicting muffins.
"yeah, it does..."
Staring at Eve and Mark had made you nostalgic. You might or might not have tried nearly every bakery in the zone with him, you said "it's to perfect a recipe" each time, and while it was partially true, at some point it was just to spend even more time with Mark. Now, after retracing the events that occurred in the last fifteen minutes, you can't help but feel guilty about how you had handled it. It was Mark after all, why were you so closed off? So awkward?
(Didn't he know everything about you? Wasn't he the person who had seen nearly everything?)
With a sad look in your face you continued your shift alternating with your coworker between the kitchen and the counter, hoping that at least this was going to be a one time thing.
Except it wasn't.
Not only was Mark everywhere and trying to spark a conversation and following you throughout your errands ( you can't forget that time when you almost shit your pants after seeing his smiling face on the other side of the shelf with the canned beans after grabbing one). Not to mention that he had made it a daily occurrence to just drop at your workplace, he bought something and then sparked a conversation with you while laying with his arms on top of the glass counter that displayed your work. It's not like you truly minded his presence, but you still couldn't shake that feeling deep in your gut that made it difficult to look at him in the eyes. (The constant reminder of what had happened kind of made it impossible for you to act like you used to).
Mark was not entirely happy either about the arrangement (why weren't you hugging him? Touching him?)
Especially when you moved before he could even put a hand on your shoulder, when he could close the distance that kept you separated.
It was better than nothing anyway, considering your two year absence.
It was fun now that people once again, from the fact that Mark once again was everywhere in your life, mistook you for a couple. You never corrected them with a laugh, you were always uncomfortable by the supposition that the both of you could be more than old friends.
While his gaze had been only dazed and love sick when looking at you, he couldn't really say the same for you. Yes, he was a guy looking at you through pink coloured glasses, but that didn't mean that he didn't know when you were uncomfortable (a two year change was nothing compared to the fact he had known you your entire life). The worst was when you acted just like you did years ago to strangers, awkward and shy, not really knowing what to say, not even looking at him in the eyes sometimes.
It was just too much to bear.
He should have expected something like this, but it still hurt. It was frustrating, especially when he could have had it all now. So it's no wonder that he was a tiny bit more aggressive when fighting, it was not a surprise when he came out of battles a little bit more bloody than usual.
It wasn't a surprise when he answered coldly or in a passive aggressive way to the new hero who was clinging on to him all the time.
She called herself "Ladybug": she paraded around in a red and black polkadot skintight costume that was fitting due to her name, her (h/c) hair was half up in two small high pigtails while the rest was let loose, shaping her face in a cute way. Her eyes were as playful as the 'weapon' she used, which, by the way, was an indestructible yo-yo that also worked as a cellphone.
From the moment you had defeated a tricky villain with just a hair clip and then you had repaired all the damage and healed all the hurt civilians with your "miraculous ladybug", the GDA and all the heroes were sold. Cecil was so happy to have someone in his team like this that he let you have many privileges, including keeping your identity a secret, and even if each battle made him respect you even more, he was so jealous of you.
He had trained for so long and then you had dared to come along and defeat villains with freaking utensils, but not only that, no, you also fixed and healed everything and then you got the praise he wishes he had got when he had started.
It's selfish, really, especially when it's your fellow new coworker that you should support no matter what since being a hero was no easy task.
Nobody knew who you were under the mask, but each one of his hero friends/coworkers adored you. It felt oddly reminiscing to the times when everyone used to want [name] for group projects and he would laugh internally when you rejected each of their offers shily, saying that you were partnering with him to do the work. He remembers how smug he would look at the frowning faces of his previous classmates.
"I'm going to patrol with Mark tonight" you say, even if he never really agreed to it. (He never agreed with you and the GDA deciding that the both of you were now a package deal.)
At this, He always turned his head ever so slowly and found you looking at him with such heart melting devotion, it was almost sickening. (You're a really nice girl, but in his mind he is already married to his little soft baker. He is a loyal husband who doesn't need.. what do they call it? Ah, a "work-wife".)
He never really said no but you should have got the hint at this point, because why were you always all over him so casually? Your hands always found a place on his body, either straight up massaging his shoulders when you saw he was too tense or carding through his hair as you explained how you were going to handle the villains.
When you fought with gymnast like movements, swinging your yo-yo left and right, you always at some point ended up using his solid figure as some sort of rest from your acrobatics. One time you sat on his shoulders, another you used his extended arm as a surface to jump, other times you just kicked and punched villains while moving on his body. Your agility and fighting style was respectable, but this was crazy.
Fans, FANS, had started shipping the both of you, and the funniest thing? You laughed and showed him compromising fanart while just hugging his arm and pressing yourself against him.
He couldn't lie and say that the two of you didn't look good together, but him and [name] just looked so much better. (Is it too much to ask for his girl to stop avoiding him and sit on his lap? Why the hell are you doing that instead? The first time you had done it he had briefly froze and then he had pushed you off. Mind you, it was a freaking skyscraper.)
He didn't know how to handle you without blushing and snapping at you, he didn't know how to properly interact with your bold self without his pungent remarks and comments laced with frustration. The worst part? You responded to his attitude with your sassy one and then clung to him even harder, as if this could have magically changed the way he felt about you.
You were attractive and smart, and you reminded him an awful lot of [name], especially in your mannerism, but he was sick of settling for people who were similar to [name], and not [name]. (First Amber, then Eve and now you? No, no, he wanted the real deal to himself, not someone who just reminded him of [name].)
You never looked disappointed when he blatantly rejected your advances, no, you smiled and tried again. You never really got tired of playing around with him, of touching, nagging and pulling at his strings.
Because you liked a good chase and if you couldn't have Mark for yourself due to your pressing fears, at least you'd have his alter ego. (You had seen videos of Invincible on TubeYou, but seeing him in front of you with his chiselled body wrapped in latex made you weak in the knees.)
You got bolder and bolder each time, you were each time more shameless both in gestures and remarks. The battles were fun as long as you were assigned Invincible as your partner. (You try to avoid the desperate look in his eyes as you make your way to him, opting to avoid feeling bad from the fact that not even your superhero alter ego was able to woo him.)
You didn't care if he didn't like you yet, because you knew him. You knew that one day he would crumble and not push you away so roughly, but instead pull you in and give you the kiss of your life. (You're kind of scared of that day actually, because what if things get serious and he wants to know who you are? What do you do then? Run? Move to another country?)
("Aren't you forgetting something?" The blood from the weird creature was sticking all over him, his hair was disheveled and he just really needed to see you with that little short skirt and that cute apron. In your equally bloody suit, you were staring at him as he combed his fingers through his hair, with a light sheen of sweat on his face and a light, almost unnoticeable, blush on his face due to the intense physical performance. The way he had said the words was laced with irritation and impatience, but you didn't care as you hazily laid your hungry eyes on his figure.
"A kiss goodbye?" Your honey-like voice, which just so happened to sound like his [name] at times, caught him off guard.
"Are you brain-damaged? Your "miraculous ladybug!"
"oh, right! Yeah, I almost forgot", you pouted before throwing the item in the sky and saying the so famous words.)
Bye <3
I hope you guys enjoyed it, this will most likely have a part 2, especially if you guys would like it. Anyway, I'd really appreciate it if you gave your opinion or support on the fanfic, don't be shy to ask about the au, or about giving constructive criticism or signalling spelling mistakes. Honestly I just can't wait to write more for the Tumblr Invincible girlies since there's a criminally underrated amount of fanfics both here and on ao3 especially.

You tried to evaluate the series of choices you had made which had led to you lying atop a boy with green eyes and sand smeared across his cheeks, a blank expression on his face despite the way you were literally sprawled over him.
First: your family had decided to spend your summer vacation in Spain. This was innocuous and broad enough, considering how large the country was, so you concluded that your brotherâs desire to practice his rudimentary Spanish in a more realistic setting than his high school classroom could not be blamed for your plight.
Second: your father had gotten a great deal on rooms in a luxury beachfront hotel. He was like a bloodhound when it came to haggling and discounts, so it wasnât a surprise that you were staying in such a nice place for a relatively cheap price â and with a complimentary breakfast every morning, too! Anyways, the hotel had its own private pool that you couldâve been lounging around beside, so that probably wasnât the cause, either.
Third: your mother had told you that the beach within walking distance of the hotel was famous for its smooth waters and pale sand. You had to visit at least once, according to her and every other travel guide written about the region, but since no one had wanted to go with you, you had decided to go alone, bringing a book, a bottle of sunscreen, and a blanket with you, throwing a dress on over your swimsuit and preparing yourself to spend the entire day soaking in the sunâs rays. This was definitely a contributor to your current predicament, although considering the miles of beach that stretched out in both directions as far as the eye could see where you couldâve been instead of right there, it wasnât the sole factor.
Fourth: you had thought you would get hungry at some point and had had the foresight to bring a sandwich with you. That was definitely the reason. If only you hadnât been so concerned with your stomach! If only you had just sucked it up and made the trek back to the hotel upon feeling peckish instead of being so lazy and planning ahead, you wouldnât be in this situation.
âCan you get off of me?â the boy groaned.
âI am so sorry!â you said, scrambling to your feet and offering him your hand. He did not take it, standing on his own and doing his best to wipe the sand from his face. Then he shook his head like a dog, shaking out the grittiness from his soft hair. âIâm really sorry. I was just running so fast, and I was so worried about my sandwich that I didnât notice you were there until it was too late!â
âSandwich?â he said. A few paces away, a seagull landed, the remnants of your lunch held in its beak. You and the boy watched as it tilted its head back, swallowing the last few bites before cawing at you in satisfaction.
âYou pig!â you shouted, pointing at it, the boy beside you temporarily forgotten as you fumed over the loss. It cocked its head at you. âThat was mine!â
âAh,â the boy said. âYour sandwich.â
The seagull hopped towards you, like it was teasing you or something, and you screeched before diving at it. Satisfied with the mischief it had caused and the food it had stolen, as well as with making a fool out of you, the seagull took wing, flying well out of reach and leaving you facedown on the ground, your stomach grumbling sadly and emptily.
A foot nudged against your rib cage. âHey. Sandwich girl. Youâre not concussed, are you?â
Being referred to as sandwich girl was so humiliating that you were instantly pushing yourself into a sitting position, folding your arms across your chest as you gazed up at the boy, who still wore that same unimpressed expression from when you had barreled into him.
âNo,â you said.
âThatâs great,â he said, though he did not sound particularly concerned nor relieved. âMind elaborating a bit more on why you ran me over? You couldâve seriously injured me, and then you wouldâve been in a bunch of trouble.â
âYou wouldâve been in a bunch of trouble,â you mocked, making your voice high and smarmy. âJeez, what are you, some kind of celebrity or something? I ran you over because I was taking a break from reading my book, and I realized that I was hungry. Well, luckily, I had brought a sandwich along with me, so it wasnât a huge deal. I was just about ready to dig in, when that fat pig of a bird swooped down and stole it right out of my hands! The gall! The shamelessness! It was definitely laughing at me, and I canât stand anyone who laughs at me, so naturally I took off in pursuit, and, uh, thatâs how I ended up crashing into you. Though you really shouldâve been paying more attention, too. Whatâs so fascinating about the horizon that you just blocked out the rest of the world for it?â
âI like looking at the ocean,â he said. âBut, wait. What do you mean, some kind of celebrity? Donât you know who I am?â
You gave him a once-over. He was tall, though not impressively so, and definitely well-muscled. His hair was a warm shade, and his green eyes were framed with long eyelashes that fluttered every time he blinked. A pair of sunglasses was perched atop the crown of his head, and the top few buttons of his white shirt were undone, lending him a breezy appearance.
âYouâre not handsome enough to be an actor, so that canât be it,â you said, chewing on your lower lip in thought. âPlus, Iâve seen a bunch of movies, and Iâm pretty sure you havenât been in any of them, so if you were in the film industry, youâd be a D-lister at best, and thereâs no way youâd want to flex that kind of status.â
He furrowed his brow, the first hint of a different expression than the one he had kept for the entirety of your very brief acquaintance. âWhat?â
âWhat else are people famous for?â you said. âOh! Are you a singer or something? Were you in that one boy band from a few years ago? Iâm sorry, I was too busy having a ânot-like-other-girlsâ phase when they were popular, so I never got into them. Iâm over the phase now, if you were wondering, but that would be why I didnât recognize you.â
âYou are amazingly off the mark,â he said.
âI am? Iâm kind of out of ideas at this point, though. Can I have a hint or something?â you said.
âDo you watch soccer?â he said. You made a face.
âHell no,â you said. His eye twitched, so you hurried to elaborate. âMy little brother is obsessed with it, so by law, Iâm required to hate everything related to the sport. Do you have any siblings? Youâd get it if you did.â
âAsk your brother about Sae Itoshi,â he said.
âOkay,â you said, drafting a text to your brother and sending it when you had deemed it to be a perfect blend of uninterested and cool while also underscoring the urgency of the request. âSo, your nameâs Sae Itoshi? Iâm Y/N L/N! Iâm not a celebrity, though. If you text anyone and ask them about me, theyâll probably be pretty confused.â
âYeah, I got that impression,â he said. Your phone vibrated in your hand, and when you looked at the notification, you saw that it was from your brother.
uglier sibling:Â no shit i know about sae itoshi. heâs that one super talented midfielder on re al. heâs dad and iâs fav player atm.
You gulped, glancing up at Sae before returning to your phone.
me:Â lol wtf is re al.
uglier sibling:Â itâs madridâs team lmfaooo dumbass how do you not know that
uglier sibling:Â actually wait why are u even asking lol
uglier sibling:Â did u meet him or something
me:Â funny story actually!
uglier sibling:Â WHAT
uglier sibling:Â y/n are u with sae itoshi rn.
uglier sibling:Â y/n answer pls
uglier sibling:Â can you at least get his autograph for me or smth???
Pretending like you were still texting your brother, you typed the name Sae Itoshi into your phoneâs search engine. The photos that came up matched the boy in front of you, and the news articles made your heart pound. He actually was a celebrity, and furthermore, his earlier arrogance was deserved. If you had somehow injured such a famous player and put him out of commission for the season, then you really wouldâve been done for. It hadnât been an exaggerated sense of self-importance but an honest evaluation of himself.
âAhem,â you said, feigning a cough to appear dignified and mature. âIt seems like you are a pretty well-known soccer player, Mr. Itoshi.â
âIt seems like I am,â he said.
âMy brother and dad are big fans, apparently,â you said.
âGood thing you didnât take me out permanently, then, or Iâm sure they wouldâve been pretty disappointed,â he said.
You cringed. âIâm sorry again.â
âWhatever. I wonât hold it against you; allâs well that ends well, after all,â he said.
âI feel really bad, though,â you said, rubbing the back of your neck sheepishly. âIs there any way I can make it up to you?â
âYou didnât do anything, so thereâs nothing to make up for,â he said.
âNot true! I knocked you over and said youâre not handsome!â you said. âIâd say that warrants some kind of recompense.â
âItâll warrant more recompense if you keep saying it,â he said.
âYou agree that you deserve payment, then? Great! UmâŠhow about IâŠbuy you lunch?â you said, the insistent pangs of your stomach reminding you that you still hadnât eaten.
âIs food the only thing you can think about?â he said.
âFor your information, it is not, but I havenât eaten since the morning, so Iâm hungry,â you said.
âWhatever helps you sleep at night,â he said. âItâs okay. Iâm not interested, and just so you know, Iâve been asked out by plenty of girls, but by far, this has been the lamest attempt.â
You supposed, looking back, that it did seem like that was your end goal. But, of course, it had been nothing of the sort; you were just planning on going to eat yourself and thought that you might as well kill two birds with one stone. It was just your luck that he had twisted your words into such a request, though! How were you supposed to maneuver yourself out of this position? If you denied it furiously, then it would seem like you were just ashamed at getting caught, but if you didnât say anything, then it would be akin to agreeing with his accusation.
There was only one way out of it, and even though you were usually opposed to lying, and even more opposed to bullying others, it was the only thing you could think of. So, bowing your head, you clasped your hands together in front of your heart.
âIâm sorry, but youâre not my type, Mr. Itoshi,â you said. âLike I said, youâre really not that handsome. Also, Iâm into tall guys.â
That was how you found yourself sitting across from Sae Itoshi in a private booth at a fancy restaurant, your hands trembling as you read over the menu items and their associated prices.
âIâm in the mood for steak,â Sae said, stroking his chin and setting down his menu, interlacing his fingers and raising his eyebrows at you. âWhat about you?â
âSteak is a dinner item, donât you think?â you said, your head spinning at the fact that he had picked the most expensive thing that was served at the entire establishment. âItâs lunchtime.â
âIâm an athlete,â he said seriously. âI need a lot of protein in all of my meals. Especially because Iâm so short. Itâs important for me to build muscle, donât you agree? How else will I manage to compete with the taller, better-looking players?â
âSteak it is,â you said with a faux smile. âAs for me, Iâll just get crackers.â
âCrackers? What kind of lunch is that?â he said.
âAn affordable one,â you muttered under your breath.
âWhat?â he said.
âNothing!â you said. âItâs nothing. I just really like crackers.â
He gave you an odd look. âAlright.â
You waved the waiter over. He had been hovering around your table for the past few minutes, and as soon as he saw you beckoning him, he sprinted to your side, fumbling with his pen and notepad before reaching you and bowing.
âSae Itoshi, sir! Iâm sorry to interrupt your date, but I just wanted to say that Iâm a huge fan of yours. If â if itâs not too much trouble, could I have your autograph?â he said.
Sae sighed, a long-suffering and irritable sigh. âJust take our order first. Iâll give it to you after weâve eaten.â
âOh, my apologies,â the waiter said. âWhat would you like?â
âIâll have the steak, and I also want this sandwich, but omit the tomatoes, please,â he said, pointing at the menu items he wanted.
âGot it,â the waiter said. âWhat about you, miss?â
âJust the crackers,â you said. The waiter paused, but when you did not say anything more, he giggled nervously.
âWould you, uh, like some cheese with those?â he said.
âNope,â you said. âIâm really the biggest fan of plain crackers. Thatâs all I want.â
âSure, miss, if thatâs what youâd like,â he said. âSo, one steak, one sandwich, and a plate of crackers?â
âThatâs right,â Sae said, hardly looking up from his phone when he did so. It was only once the waiter had run off to place your orders that he put the device away, resting his elbows against the table, setting his chin in his hands and giving you a bored look. âWhy are you glaring at me?â
âSteak and a sandwich, really?â you said.
âA conversation with you was more than enough to increase my appetite,â he said. âForget about that. This is the part where you ask me questions about myself and I pretend like I am interested enough to answer them.â
âWhy would I do that?â you said, rolling your eyes at him. âActually, Iâm pretty sure your answer to that question will be something that makes me even more annoyed than I already am, so donât bother. Whatâs your favorite movie?â
âYouâre not going to ask me about soccer?â he said. âItâs Taxi Driver, by the way.â
âI donât know that much about soccer, so what would I even ask? Based on what Iâve seen from the matches my brother and dad watch, itâs just a bunch of sweaty guys kicking around a ball and pretending like theyâre dying whenever another player happens to look at them the wrong way,â you said. âOh, actually, I am curious about that. How many of those injuries are real? Have you ever faked getting hurt?â
âAlmost none of them,â he said. âGenerally, players will overreact for the sake of entertainment and the possibility of the opposition receiving yellow cards. Iâve never needed to do anything like that, and I never want to, because it looks stupid. Also, soccer is more than that mediocre description you just gave me.â
âYeah, yeah, whatever you say,â you said. âMan kick ball. Ball go in net. Man happy. Thatâs the extent of it.â
âWomen play soccer, too,â he said.
âItâs the same concept there, but with women instead of men. Not the argument you thought it was,â you said.
âI canât believe you actually dislike soccer,â he said.
There was definitely some irony in the fact that you couldnât care less about his chosen sport, and yet you were the one who had somehow finagled your way into eating with him â even if you were the one who was paying. There were so many people whoâd do anything to be in your place, but to you, it was a begrudging chore that you were only performing because you felt obligated to. Mentally, you had already marked the entire encounter down as something that youâd laugh about to your friends later; a fun story youâd tell at parties, but little else.
âLike I told you earlier, Iâm the older sister. If I didnât rag on my brotherâs interests, then I couldnât claim that title in any way that mattered,â you said. Saeâs eyes flicked down to the ground.
âYou should be nice to your brother when you can,â he said.
âAre you some kind of an only child or saint, then? Thereâs no way youâre saying that if you have a normal relationship with any possible siblings,â you said.
âI have a little brother,â he said. âOur relationship is okay. I havenât seen him in a while, though.â
âLong distance?â you said, reaching over to pat him on the hand sympathetically. âThatâs the worst. I miss my friends and my pets already, and Iâm only here for vacation.â
He snatched his hand away. âYou make it sound like weâre dating or something. Itâs alright. Iâm sure itâll be the same as it was whenever I go back.â
âTrue, itâs not like he can dump you and find a new brother whoâs both better and more conveniently located than you are. Heâs kind of stuck with you forever,â you said.
âEnough about my brother,â he said. âLetâs talk about something else.â
âOkay,â you said. âWhat TV shows do you watch when youâre bored?â
The two of you continued on in that mindless manner until your food arrived. Your mood, which had steadily been rising as Sae proved himself to be, if nothing else, a willing conversationalist, rapidly plummeted as the waiter set the steak and sandwich in front of Sae and the crackers in front of you.
âEnjoy your meal,â the waiter said.
âIâm sure one of us will,â you said, picking up a cracker and biting into it rebelliously. Sae began to cut his steak into small pieces, using his fork to demurely place the meat on his tongue, doing nothing to disguise the indulgence of eating such a wonderfully prepared meal while you were stuck with crackers.
âWhat a shame,â Sae said when he was about halfway through his steak. You hadnât spoken since the food had come, mostly because you were too busy fervently hoping that he would choke and you would somehow be awarded a free meal as an apology on the restaurantâs part, so you jumped at the sound of his voice cutting through the silence. âMy eyes were bigger than my stomach. I donât think Iâll be able to eat that sandwich after all.â
âWe should send it back, then,â you said.
âWhat sort of place do you think this is?â he said. âItâs already been ordered, so itâs ours now.â
âAre you serious?â you said. âWhat now? Iâll have to pay for something that you didnât even eat!â
âYouâll just have to have it,â he said.
âMe?â you said, already salivating at the delectable sandwich, the bread which was taunting you. Come, it seemed to be calling out to you. Eat me. You know you want to. âI guess thatâs a sensible prospect. Someoneâs going to have to take it.â
âSomeone will,â he agreed, sliding the plate across the table and stealing a cracker for his troubles. âIt might as well be you. My coach will be pretty upset if I get stomach cramps next season because I overate too much on my off time. Iâd have to tell him that it was your fault, and then youâd have all of Re Al after you, and you donât want that. Theyâre relentless.â
Your fingers inched towards the sandwich. âI definitely donât. That sounds scary.â
âIt would be amusing,â he said. âA waste of resources, though. They might cut my salary to make up for it. â
âThen the only solution is for me to eat this sandwich,â you said.
âEssentially,â he said. You gave in, taking an enormous bite of the tantalizing sandwich and exhaling in delight. It really was as good as the exorbitant price tag claimed it would be, and although you would never buy such a thing for yourself, you found that you were a little more grateful for the series of events that had led you to be in this position now that your stomach was finally being greeted with something substantial.
âItâs good,â you said, your words muffled by the napkin you held in front of your mouth as you finished chewing. âI can kind of get why they charge so much now. Itâs still way more than any sandwich should ever cost, ever, butâŠI kinda get it. Is your food good, too?â
âIt is,â he said.
âAlright!â you said, giving him a double thumbs up. âThen you can consider this a worthy apology! Letâs finish eating and be done with the entire mess.â
âHm? But how can it be a worthy apology when Iâm the one who paid for everything? To me, that doesnât sound like an apology at all,â he said. You froze, your mouth wide open, the sandwich still halfway to your mouth and drooping in your hands. Sae looked at you, still expressionless, though if you really focused, you wouldâve noticed something like mirth dancing in his irises.
âWhat do you mean?â you said. He unlocked his phone and showed you his screen.
âYou can pay by app here,â he said. âI did it as soon as we were done ordering. I was going to tell you after you ordered what you wanted for yourself, but I wasnât expecting you to be so frugal that youâd really only order crackers!â
âBut â but I was supposed to pay! To apologize forââ
âYou donât have to say it,â Sae said sourly, cutting you off. âBelieve me, I remember exactly what you have to apologize for, and Iâm not going to forget. I just paid this time because I was feeling generous, but you still owe me.â
It was a little suspicious, but you didnât have any reason to accuse him of anything, so you only narrowed your eyes at him. Taking another bite of your sandwich, you mulled over the latest reveal. He was paying for the entire lunch? You still owed him? You could manipulate that in your favor, then.
âTomorrow morning, Iâll pay for your breakfast,â you said. âThe hotel Iâm staying at has complimentary breakfast for guests, but outsiders can eat for a certain fee. Iâll pay for your entrance, and then we can be even.â
âSure,â he said. âI eat breakfast early, though.â
âHow early?â you said.
âI have a snack at 7:00 a.m., before I go for my morning run, and then I eat a proper meal afterwards,â he said.
âOh!â you said. âAny chance you could not do that?â
âItâs part of my training regimen,â he said. âHow about you pay for my food and come on my run with me?â
âI hate running,â you said.
âYouâre apologizing. Itâs supposed to be an agonizing process,â he said. âYouâve called me short and ugly at least three separate times already, not to mention the entire slamming into me ordeal. Itâs really the least you can do.â
â7:00 it is,â you said, though you were fighting back tears at the mere thought of getting up so early while on vacation. âGive me your phone.â
âNo way,â he said, holding the phone away from you while you tried to swipe at it. âWhat are you going to do, post something embarrassing on my social media accounts?â
âWhy would I do that?â you said. âI was going to text myself so I had your number and could send you my location for tomorrow.â
âOr you could tell me which hotel youâre staying at now, and then my phone is entirely removed from the equation,â he suggested.
âDo you think I remember the name?â you said. âThatâs a rhetorical question, by the way. I donât.â
He handed you his phone with an aggravated huff. âFine. Donât abuse the privilege. I only give important people my contact information.â
âWoah, you really are stingy,â you said, scrolling through his contacts list. All of them either had the designation of work attached to their profiles, or they were clearly members of Saeâs family.
Clicking on the plus sign in the corner, you created a new contact for yourself, typing in your number and giving yourself the name Y/N L/N â sandwich. It fit the naming conventions he had going on, and if it werenât for the reminder that you were the so-called âsandwich girlâ, you doubted he would remember who you were in the first place.
âOf course I am. Imagine I gave every crazy fan I met my number. Iâd have a million stalkers before you could say Re Al,âhe said.
âIâm not a crazy fan. To clarify, Iâm not a fan in the first place,â you said, texting yourself from his number before taking out your own phone and responding to the message with a thumbs up.
âCorrect, which is why you get my number,â he said.
âI feel so honored,â you said dryly. âActually, you know what? I would feel honored, if it werenât for the fact that youâre only giving it to me because you want to wake me up at an unholy hour and make me run with you before paying for your breakfast.â
âWould you rather pay for this meal?â he said, showing you the receipt he had been emailed. Your eyes widened, and then you shook your head rapidly.
âNope! See you tomorrow!â
The next morning, you tiptoed around the hotel room as you got ready, trying your best not to wake your mother up. She, and the rest of your family, had been up late last night, going out for dinner and dessert well past your bedtime. Far too embarrassed to tell them the realreason you were going to sleep early, you had said you were sick and went to bed as soon as the sun set.
Angrily gnawing on a granola bar from your motherâs emergency stash, you stomped down the spiraling hotel staircase, your eyes still bleary as you texted your family group chat that you were going out for a morning walk but would be back for breakfast.
Sae Itoshi was waiting for you in the lobby, doing some weird stretching routine that involved pressing his foot against the wall and leaning over it. You watched him, bemused, wondering which muscles he was trying to stretch before giving up and deciding it was probably one of those pro moves that you were too uninterested and unathletic for.
âOh, youâre here,â he said. âGood morning.â
âGood morning,â you said, giving him another one of the granola bars you had taken from your motherâs backpack. âSorry, itâs sort of smushed. Itâs been in a backpack for the last few days.â
He pinched the wrapper between his forefinger and thumb, looking at the granola bar with a disgusted expression. You didnât think it was thategregious, but according to Sae, it must have been all but an offense against humanity, as he tossed it into the trash can within seconds of having it within his grasp.
âI already ate my snack,â he said.
âWhy did you throw that away? I couldâve eaten it!â you said.
âThat thing had probably melted and reformed at least twice. It was most definitely radioactive. I did you a favor, so you should say thank you,â he said.
âThank you, Mr. Itoshi, for protecting me from the horrors of a slightly misshapen granola bar. Iâm sure that, by throwing away that still edible brick of deliciousness, you have done me a great service. Possibly, you have even saved my life. I am eternally grateful,â you said.
He snorted. âYouâre terrible at groveling. No wonder you have to do all of this ridiculous stuff to apologize to me instead of just saying sorry and moving on like a normal person.â
âLook, itâs a product of my upbringing,â you said. He finished stretching and headed out of the door; you followed after him with a smile at the hotel concierge, who seemed surprised to watch you go â whether it was the hour or your company, you werenât sure. âWhenever my parents did something to upset me, they never apologized. They just came to my room with a bowl of fruit they had cut for me.â
âAt least you got fruit,â he said. âMy parents just told me to go practice soccer until I had cooled off.â
âWow, really? Thatâs hardcore,â you said. Sae began to jog, and you did the same, though it was closer to a run for you than anything. âDid you just kick around the ball until you were less mad?â
âPretty much,â he said.
âHow horrible,â you said.
âEh, itâs fine. It was a good way to get my anger out, and it had the added benefit of making me better at the sport, so it was pretty constructive overall,â he said.
âI still canât imagine it,â you said, shaking your head. âWhatâs it like, being a professional athlete? Your entire life revolves around a game. What about when you canât play anymore? When youâre too old, or if you get injured?â
His upper lip curled. âDo you want that to happen or something? Why are you speaking it into existence?â
âNot the injury part, but everyone grows old. You canât stop that,â you said.
âIâll play for as long as I can, and then Iâll coach for longer,â he said. âAfter that, Iâll retire and make sure my kids follow in my footsteps. Athletes make a lot of money, so I luckily wonât ever have to worry much about my finances.â
âWhat if your kids donât want to play soccer?â you said. He actually sneered this time, the expression at home on his cold face.
âWhat else would they do with themselves? If they donât want to play soccer, or if they have no talent at it, then theyâre definitely not my children in the first place,â he said.
âHm, maybe cooking? What if they want to be a chef?â you said.
âThen Iâd wonder how your kids snuck into my house,â he said. You gasped, though it was as much for breath as it was out of offense.
âStop it! You just happened to catch me at a hungry time!â you said.
âSure,â he said.
âJust entertain the hypothetical that you really did somehow father children that were into cooking instead of soccer. How would you react?â you said.
âI would put them up for adoption,â he said.
âSeriously?â you said.
âNo, obviously not,â he said. âWhat kind of person do you think I am? Why did you actually find that to be within the realm of possibility?â
âI think youâre some kind of soccer fiend. Who knows how dedicated you are to the cause?â you said.
âNot that dedicated,â he said. âIâd be disappointed if my kids canât play soccer, and our relationship would probably be a bit distant, as I donât know much about anything else, but I wouldnât disown them.â
âYou donât know much about anything besides soccer? Thatâs a little sad,â you said.
âKind of,â he said.
âDo you wish you knew about other things?â you said.
âEveryone has something they specialize in. Itâs not uncommon for someone to know a lot about one thing and only a little about others,â he said. âMy âthingâ is soccer. If it wasnât that, then itâd be something else, so if I was in the business of wishing, Iâd always be unsatisfied.â
You were already panting for breath when Sae picked up the pace, though he had not so much as broken a sweat yet. He glanced at you out of the corner of his eye, taking in your obvious struggles, and then he made the decision to not slow down at all.
âI get it,â you said. âYouâll face no judgment from me.â
âLike I would care if you did judge me,â he said. âYouâre already dying, and we havenât even started running yet.â
âThis isnât running?â you said. âWhat the hell? How much faster can you even go?â
âIf you think that this is anywhere near the pace of an average soccer match, then I donât even know where to begin with you,â he said.
âYou look slower on TV!â
âWhat, so you think Iâm slow, too?â
You and Sae returned to the hotel in markedly different conditions. He wasnât even warm, still appearing to be perfectly put together and entirely perspiration-free, smelling faintly like body soap and cologne. On the other hand, you were still trying to regain your wits about you, leaning on his shoulder so that you did not fall over from exhaustion.
âThis is embarrassing for you,â he informed you as you walked towards the breakfast area.
âYouâre a professional athlete and Iâm a normal girl! It would be embarrassing for you if I could keep up!â you argued weakly.
âThat would be true, if I wasnât going easy on you,â he said, pulling out a chair for you and helping you into it, brushing his arm off when he was sure you were seated. âIâm going to go to the bathroom. Be right back.â
âHave fun,â you said, resting your head in your hands, already knowing what you wanted to get. âWe can walk through the buffet together. Iâll take the time to recover.â
âYou do that,â he said.
While he was gone, you opened your phone, catching up on all of the texts in the family group chat that you hadnât been able to read while you were attempting to run with Sae.
me:Â going for a morning walk but iâll be back for breakfast
me:Â just wanted to let you all know so you werenât worried!
uglier sibling:Â yeah nobody was worried LMFAO
mom:Â Hope youâre feeling better, honey!
dad:Â Make sure youâre back before 10. Thatâs when the complimentary breakfast ends, and weâre not paying for overpriced toast with jam.
uglier sibling:Â i still canât believe u went for a morning walk
uglier sibling:Â like
uglier sibling:Â since when do u voluntarily wake up in the mornings at all let alone leave ur bed LET ALONE TAKE A WALK
uglier sibling:Â bitches will meet sae itoshi one time and suddenly theyâre fitness influencers or wtvr
uglier sibling:Â btw iâm still mad that u didnât get his autograph or a photo with him or anything
uglier sibling:Â i bet u made it up
uglier sibling:Â LIAR. FRAUD. HACK.
mom:Â Honey, leave your sister alone. Why would she make something like that up?Â
dad:Â Your mother is right. Y/N doesnât even know who Sae Itoshi is.
So it was a typical conversation, then. You hadnât missed much; just your brother being salty and your parents showing some care for your well-being, as well as your father worrying for his wallet like he was prone to do. You didnât even bother responding, just liking your fatherâs two messages and then putting your phone away.
âY/N, youâre back already? What good timing!â your father called out to you from the entrance to the hotel restaurant. The world slowed as you turned to see the rest of your family walking into the restaurant, dressed in their typical touristy outfits. Your mother waved at you, and your brother faked gagging.
âWow, you look like shit,â he said. âThe fuck kinda morning walk were you on?â
âGross, itâs you,â you said. âGo away! Iâm busy.â
âYou donât even have any food with you,â he pointed out. âCan I sit with you? The parents are way too chipper in the mornings.â
âNo!â you said.
âBut thereâs an empty seat at your table. Are you saving it for someone?â he said.
âYes,â you said, wishing that for once they wouldâve all slept in instead of getting here at the exact time that you and Sae had.
âNo, youâre not,â he said.
âCome on, you two, letâs sit together and have a family breakfast!â your father said, motioning you and your brother over from where he and your mother had settled at a four-person table. Your brother gave you a pleading look.
âIâll owe you forever,â he said. âIâll grind on all of your video games for you the entire plane ride home!â
âIâm not lying, dude, I actually am sitting with someone. Now fuck off and leave me alone!â you hissed.
âWho?â he said, crossing his arms. âYour imaginary friend? Or your imaginary boyfriend!â
âExcuse me? Sorry, I was sitting there. Do you mindâ?â
The most comical expression you had ever seen flashed over your brotherâs face just then. It was horror mixed with incredulity mixed with extreme confusion. He turned slowly, his jaw dropping as he made eye contact with Sae Itoshi, whose dry countenance and perfect posture were as off-putting as ever.
âWhat?â your brother said. âWhat is going on?â
Sae sat opposite you. âThis hotel has the most confusing first floor layout Iâve ever encountered. It took me ages just to find the bathroom.â
âThereâs signs. Can you not read?â you said. He stared at you dully.
âI can read. I just happened not to look up at them,â he said.
âIf I didnât want to pay for even more food, Iâd make another short joke, but I shall refrain,â you said.
âThat was cutting it close,â he said.
âY/N. My beautiful, amazing, wonderful older sister,â your brother said.
âYes?â you said, preparing yourself for the incoming explosion. âAlso, thatâs not what you were calling me in the group chat earlier, was it?â
âIs that Sae Itoshi?â he said.
âLiar, fraud, hack, was that what it was?â you said. âRun along, loser. Maybe if you were nicer to me, Iâd let you sit with us.â
Your brother opened his mouth to argue, but then, like he had remembered he was standing in front of his idol, he hung his head and trudged off, scuffing his toes against the floor as he did and giving you a betrayed look over his shoulder.
âThatâs your little brother?â Sae said.
âYup,â you said. âYour self-proclaimed biggest fan.â
âAnd you made him go sit with your parents instead of talking to me? Youâre super mean, big sister,â Sae said.
âHe wouldnât shut up if I let him stay here, and considering the goal of this is for you to eat and then leave me alone for the rest of my vacation, that would not be conducive,â you said.
âI see,â he said. âI didnât realize that was the goal.â
âIsnât it yours, as well? Iâm sure youâd like to enjoy yourself on your time off from soccer,â you said.
âWho says Iâm not enjoying myself?â he said. You furrowed your brow at him.
âYouâve had the same expression on your face every time weâve spoken,â you pointed out, lowering your eyelids and pursing your lips in an imitation of his resting mien. âLike this. Itâs totally amphibious.â
âAmphibious?â he repeated. âWhat does that even mean?â
âYou donât know what amphibious means? Man, when you said you only focused on soccer, I didnât think it was this bad!â you said.
âI know what amphibious means! I just donât see how the word applies,â he said.
âOh, right. Well, you kind of look like the frog emoji,â you said. âSorry, I couldâve been clearer. Thatâs my bad.â
âWere you dropped on the head as a baby? Iâm asking this from a place of concern, not anger,â Sae said. âItâs because you say so many nonsensical things. After all, I look nothing like the frog emoji.â
âSure, and people tell me I look like a famous actress,â you said.
âReally?â he said.
âNo, I thought we were both saying things that arenât true,â you said.
âI think you look like a famous actress,â he said. âThere. Now weâre both saying things that are true.â
âWell done, Mr. Itoshi! That was clever,â you said, knowing when to concede.
âThank you,â he said. âLetâs go get our food now. If you die of starvation on my watch, itâll be a major scandal for Re Al.â
âYour manager must love you,â you said. âSo conscientious of your public image.â
âNope, heâs usually pretty pissed at me,â he said as the two of you got in the buffet line.
âWhat for?â you said.
âContrary to what you think, Iâm pretty unconcerned with my public image. Iâm a soccer player, not some kind of philanthropist or actor or whatever,â he said. âWhat does it matter if I offend people? My value is in playing well, not being friendly or kind.â
âNo one ever accused you of being either of those two,â you said, spreading butter and jam over your toast. âYouâre not that bad, though.â
âYouâre not that bad, either,â he said. âAt least, youâre better company than my manager.â
âIâll take it as a compliment,â you said. He scoffed.
âYou have low standards,â he said.
âYours are lower,â you said.
âVery mature response.â
âThanks!â
Sae was a pretty agreeable breakfast partner. He wasnât as impossibly cheerful as your parents, who generally drove you crazy with their talkativeness so early in the day, but he also wasnât as silent and closed off as your brother, who was prone to snapping at others until he had finished at least half of his meal. As with lunch yesterday, it was almost an enjoyable experience, right up until you remembered whose card he was eating on.
âWhere are you going?â he said when your plates had been cleared and you had pushed yourself to your feet. He followed after you as you made your way to the hostessâs station, ignoring the whispers that echoed behind the two of you.
âTo pay for you to be here, duh,â you said, fishing around in your purse for your wallet. âI know youâre famous and all, but that doesnât mean you get to eat for free. In fact, that was kind of the point of the meal.â
âI already paid for myself, so you can go and sit back down with your family if youâd like,â he said.
âWhat? When?â you said.
âI wouldnât spend that long in a bathroom,â he said. âNot a public one.â
âYou littleâ! Now what?â you said.
âNow you have to see me tomorrow,â he said. âBye. Iâll pick you up for dinner, so make sure to wear something nice, and bring your credit card. Itâs your treat.â
He walked off with a jaunty wave, leaving you standing there, confounded by the development. He had paid for himself again? What was the point of making you take him places if he was just going to cough up the cash himself anyways?
âPsst. Y/N,â your brother said. You werenât sure when or where he had appeared, but it remained that he was suddenly tapping you on the shoulder and whispering in your ear. âDoes Sae Itoshi have a crush on you? If so, please ask if he can get tickets for dad and I to attend his next game.â
âWhat?â you said, a shockwave running through your entire body at the mere thought of Sae having a crush on you. It was so juvenile and cliched as to be out of Saeâs character entirely. âNo! I just owe him.â
âFor what?â your brother said.
âI ran into him, called him ugly, and said that he was short,â you said. âIndirectly, of course, but it still happened. I was supposed to buy him lunch yesterday as an apology, but then he ended up paying for us both, and then today, I went on a run with him, and I was going to pay for him to have breakfast here, but guess what?â
âHe paid for himself?â your brother said.
âHe paid for â yeah, how did you know?â you said.
âThere werenât that many ways the story couldâve gone. Also, I overheard you guys talking,â he said.
âCreep,â you said.
âWeirdo,â he said.
âFreak,â you said.
âStupid,â he said. âI bet he has a crush on you.â
âWhy would he? We have zero common interests, and Iâve mostly only insulted him in our very short time knowing one another,â you said.
âMaybe heâs into that. Some guys are. My one friend is â actually, Iâm not exposing him like that,â he said.
âThank you, because I really didnât want to know,â you said.
âAnyways, where I was going with that is some guys like girls who humble them a bit. Especially someone like Sae Itoshi; heâs probably so used to people falling all over themselves to get his attention that itâs nice for him to hang out with someone whoâs too oblivious to care about that kind of stuff,â he said.
âPeople like you?â you said. âI told him you were his biggest fan, just so you know.â
âWhy would you do that?â your brother said, his eyes bugging out and his mouth forming a pained grimace. âHe probably thinks Iâm a nerd now!â
âYou do it to yourself, buddy,â you said. âLetâs go. It looks like the parents want us to go sit with them. Think you can handle it?â
âAfter learning that my hero has a crush on my sister and, furthermore, probably thinks of me as some kind of dweeb, I can handle anything,â he said.
The entire day, you pondered your brotherâs words. Did Sae have a crush on you? Running through his actions and every conversation you both had ever had led you to think that he did not. It didnât seem like he liked you very much in even a platonic sense, so how could anyone begin to think he liked you romantically? It was just tolerance for the sake of his pride, that was all.
And you definitely didnât like him. He was emotionless and conceited and teased you far too often. What did it matter that he was somewhat attractive? He had a terrible personality, and you bet that if more of his fans knew what he was like, he wouldnât have any to begin with.
No wonder Saeâs manager hated him. He was probably a jerk to his poor employees, too.
âWeâre thinking of going here for dinner tonight,â your father said the next day. âLook, their reviews are pretty high, and their prices arenât crazy. What does everyone think?â
âIâm fine with anything,â your mother said.
âSame here,â your brother said.
âY/N?â your father said. You were about to respond when your own phone buzzed. You knew exactly who it was texting you, and you sighed as you opened it.
sae itoshi (dumb haircut):Â I will be there in one hour.
sae itoshi (dumb haircut):Â You better not have forgotten about our plans for tonight.
sae itoshi (dumb haircut):Â I made a reservation, so Iâll really be mad if you stand me up.
sae itoshi (dumb haircut):Â Especially because youâre paying.
me:Â I WILL BE THERE OMFG STOP TEXTING ME
sae itoshi (dumb haircut):Â Okay.
âI canât,â you said.
âWhy not? Are you on some new diet or something? They should have vegetarian options, so that wonât be a problem,â your father said. âWe can look at their menu beforehand if you prefer, and if you really donât like anything, then we can find somewhere else.â
âI already have plans,â you said, your lower lip jutting out childishly. âNot that I want to! But I made a promise.â
âYou already have plans? Whatâs that supposed to mean?â your mother said.
âIâm having dinner with someone,â you said.
âOoh, how exciting! With who?â she said.
âI bet I can guess!â your brother sang.
âEnough out of you!â you said, kicking him in the back of the leg. He doubled over, though that did not stop him from smirking at you.
âY/N and Sae, sitting in a tree! K-I-S-S-I-N-G!â he said.
âYouâre going out with Sae Itoshi?â your father said. âYou shouldâve just said so! Thatâs perfectly alright, honey. Actually, heâs the one man Iâm not upset about you dating!â
âWe are not dating!â you said. âItâs a more transactional relationship than that. No feelings involved. Itâs just me apologizing to him.â
âAre you close enough to him to get an autograph for your brother and I?â your dad said.
âUm.â You thought about it. Would Sae give you an autograph for them? You werenât sure. There was a chance he would, but there was also a high chance he would not. âI dunno. I can ask.â
âYouâll ask for dad, but not for me? Wow, I see how it is,â your brother said.
âYeah, because youâre annoying!â you said. âUgh. I have to get ready now. Heâll be here to get me in an hour. Have fun at dinner, all of you. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers.â
âYou have fun as well,â your mother said. âMake sure not to bring any money with you. Gentlemen should always pay on the first date.â
âIâll be sure to tell him that,â you said, giving up on explaining things to your family for the sake of your sanity.
Sae was aggressively punctual. Exactly an hour after he had texted you, a shiny black car was pulling up in the valet lane, and a tall, bald man in a suit was opening the door for you. You climbed in awkwardly, finding Sae to be sitting on the other side, gazing out of the window pensively.
âHello,â you said, smoothing your dress and buckling your seatbelt. âYou have a driver?â
âOf course I do,â he said. âI usually walk places when Iâm on vacation, but this restaurant is kind of far, so I thought itâd be more prudent to have the driver take us.â
âI see,â you said. âThank you, driver, sir.â
The driver hummed in acknowledgement but did not say anything else. You supposed he probably wasnât used to talking with his passengers; you doubted Sae ever spoke to him much.
âItâs been so hot out recently,â Sae said stiffly.
âThatâs what happens during the summer, yes,â you said.
âThatâs true,â he said.
âYouâre right, though,â you said. âIt has been hot.â
âSuper hot,â he said.
âYes,â you said. âSuper hot.â
That mustâve been why there was a slight redness to his cheeks. There was definitely no other reason. And there wasnât any other reason for why you felt uncomfortably warm, shifting in your seat to dissipate the feeling in your stomach. It was the temperature. That was all.
Given the trend, you really should have anticipated it when Sae paid for your dinner while you were freshening up in the bathroom, but you really had not seen it coming in the slightest. He scrunched up his face when you argued, simply telling you that he would see you tomorrow before dropping you back off at your hotel, the receipt in your hand, his flourishing signature scrawled across the back.
âFor your brother,â he had said, handing it to you before you could even ask him for his autograph. âYou said he was a fan, right? Iâll get him a better one later, but for now, this should do.â
You spent every day of the rest of that vacation with Sae Itoshi. Some days, you would accompany him on a morning walk â he had softened to slowing his pace, so that he was only barely jogging instead of the full on run that he had forced you into that first time â and on others, the two of you would have some meal or another together. The common theme was that, if there was money involved, he would take care of it. Without question, without hesitation, he always slapped your hand back and pulled out his own credit card, telling you that now you both had to meet again, and the next time you really would be the one paying, or else heâd never be able to forgive you for your terrible behavior.
Your parents and brother complained about it at first, as your new friendship with Sae â could it be considered a friendship, or was it something else? â meant you did not see them much on what was supposed to be a family vacation.
You brought it up with Sae, and he responded with something about how it wouldnât have been a problem at all if you werenât such a freeloader and actually paid for him, like you were supposed to. This resulted in a lighthearted squabble between you both, which in turn made you forget your familyâs whining, and as well you should have. You could take a million more vacations with them, but youâd likely never get a chance to hang out with Sae Itoshi again, so why wouldnât you take advantage of it when you could?
Sae didnât forget, though. He sent you back from dinner the next evening with a soccer ball he had won in one of his games, his signature and a note of gratitude scribbled on it in black marker.
Thank you for letting me borrow your daughter and sister from you while youâre on your trip. I really appreciate it, even if she doesnât know anything about soccer. â Sae Itoshi
They stopped complaining after that. The ball became your brotherâs most prized possession, and every day, your father would tell you how happy he was that you had made such a considerate friend.
âAnd you know, if you ever want to date him,â heâd say, elbowing you in the side with an obnoxious wink. âWe wouldnât be opposed!â
Your mother was in the same boat. âHe really cares about you, I think. Enough that he gave your family something so precious just because he thought we didnât like him. You could do a lot worse than that.â
âPlus, heâs rich and famous!â your brother would chime in without fail. âDouble win!â
âYou guys are all nuts,â youâd tell them, shaking your head to disguise how pleased the thought of dating Sae made you.
It could never happen. Like your brother was so happy to remind you, he was rich and famous, an athlete that was adored worldwide and played for the best soccer club in history. He could have any girl he wanted, so why would he ever choose you? You and he were from two different planes of existence. Maybe you could pretend for a little bit that you werenât, but the date for your eventual departure from Spain was drawing closer and closer, and that day meant the certain end of the fever dream that was your closeness with Sae.
You had been prepared from the start for it to finish in this way. You would go home and tell all of your friends about your trip, how you had spent almost every day with the famous soccer player Sae Itoshi, how he had given you his phone number and made you go on runs with him, how together, you and him had eaten lunch and dinner and breakfast and several meals that you were convinced he had just made up to have an excuse to buy food for the two of you â brunch, linner, midnight snacks and third desserts.
There were other things that you wouldnât tell them, too, things that Sae had not necessarily said to you in confidence but which you sensed were held close to his heart and which you would therefore hold close to yours. His little brother was named Rin, and they had the same eyes, though Rinâs were quicker to water and perpetually had hair falling into them. He still watched the same shows he used to when he was very small, because they reminded him of his parentsâ home. He thought that a personâs athletic potential could be determined by the shape of their butt, but he tended to avoid looking as a form of respect for others.
âThatâs a pretty cool skill, Sae! What do you think my athletic potential is?â you had asked when he had revealed that last fact.
âIf itâs possible for a person to have negative potential, then thatâs about what yours is. If itâs not, then youâre definitely at a zero,â he had responded.
âYou didnât even look,â you had said, shoving a French fry into his mouth as punishment. He hated French fries for how unhealthy they were, and you had half-expected him to lecture you about fats and oils and salts, but instead, he had dutifully chewed and swallowed without any theatrics.
âDonât need to, and donât plan to,â he had said, and that was that. âIâve already seen you run, and that told me all I needed to know about your athletic skills. Or, in this case, your lack thereof.â
If you took his words at face value, then you wouldâve thought he truly hated you. He never missed a chance to make fun of you, and you were the same way â certainly, anyone who overheard your conversations wouldâve been convinced that you and he were bitter enemies. But that was because they didnât see the way he always positioned himself on the sidewalk so that he was between you and the oncoming traffic. They didnât see the way heâd pull out your chair and only pretend to frown when youâd thank him for it. They didnât see the way his ears would turn pink if you dared to smile in his direction or, heaven forbid, agreed with what he was saying instead of arguing, as was your go-to.
No, you were pretty confident that Sae Itoshi did not hate you. It was just that soccer was his thing and all other areas were beyond him, areas which included such fields as emotional awareness and sensitivity.
Maybe you might tell the friends you were particularly close to about that. Sae Itoshi treated me pretty well, youâd say, with grand, sweeping hand motions to emphasize the point. As well as he knew how to, which was well enough for me. If I ever get a boyfriend, theyâll have a lot to live up to. Seems kind of unfair to whatever poor schmuck gets stuck with the task, donât you think? Considering the two of us never even datedâŠ
âI'm going home tomorrow morning,â you said. The sun was setting, and the two of you were walking along the same stretch of beach that you had first met at. âI finished packing all of my things before dinner. Itâs surreal, almost. I feel like an entirely different person now, compared to when I came here.â
âIs that so?â he said, the corners of his lips twitching slightly. âI wonder why.â
âDid you just smile?â you said. Immediately, he scowled.
âNo way,â he said. âIâd never smile because of something you said.â
âUh-huh, uh-huh, you definitely smiled. I made you smile! I made you smile! I made you smile!â you said, poking him in the cheek repeatedly. Saeâs expressions were so subtle that it was easy to overlook them before they had vanished, but there was no overlooking what you had just seen. He had definitely smiled at you, or at least he had been about to.
âStop poking me,â he grumbled.
âNo,â you said, poking him again. âOnly if you smile again.â
âHell no,â he said. You poked his cheek again. âY/N. Stop it.â
âWill you miss me?â you said.
âNot if you donât quit that!â he said, grabbing your wrist when you prepared to poke him again. Heat rose to your cheeks at the way his thumb rested against your pulse, and when he realized he was holding your hand so familiarly, his own cheeks flushed. âNo. I wonât.â
âIâll miss you,â you said, digging your feet into the sand, turning out to the sea because you couldnât stand to look at him when you were being so vulnerable. âIâll tell everyone I know about you, of course, but it wonât be the same. Something funny will happen, and Iâll think to myself, oh, Sae wouldâve snorted at that â but not laughed, because you donât laugh. Or Iâll order shitty French fries, and itâll remind me of how much youâd scold me for eating them. Youâd say something like, those are basically heart attacks in a box, and then youâd pour a bottle of salted kombucha down my throat to cleanse my system.â
Somewhere in the distance, a seagull squawked, reminding you of the fateful encounter from so long ago. You wished you could go back and get to know Sae all over again. You wished you could ask him the same questions and not know the answers, so that you were surprised when he told them to you. You wished you could argue with him for a little bit longer. You wished that, one more time, you could imply he was short and ugly and slow and a thousand other rude adjectives, even if he was really none of those things, none of them at all.
âIâm going to ask you one last question, okay?â you said. âPlease think over your answer carefully. Itâs important.â
âOkay,â he said, uncharacteristically gently. âIâll really consider it well.â
âWhatâs your favorite animal?â you said.
âSeagulls,â he said immediately, directly contradicting his solemn oath. You laughed at this, burying your face in your hands to hide the hitch in your throat.
âYou traitor,â you said. âYou know all about the feud between seagulls and I, and yet youâre still claiming theyâre your favorites?â
âThey always have been,â he said. âI like migratory birds, how they donât stay in one place but are always moving around. It must be such a blissful life.â
âBut itâs probably pretty lonely, too,â you said. âThey donât have anywhere to call home.â
âI like lonely things,â he said. âThatâs why the end of the summer is my favorite season.â
âHm,â you said. âThen, if I tell you that Iâll be lonely once I leave here, will you like me, too?â
He looked at you, but you stared resolutely ahead, your gaze trained on the horizon, the way his had been on the day you had run into him. It was such a kiddish question, and internally, you were beating yourself up for asking it, but deep down, you wanted to know, so you did not move to retract it.
âWell, I like seagulls for a different reason now,â he said.
So that was your answer, then. The waves crashed against the shore, and a balmy wind blew through your hair and clothes, carrying the light scent of Saeâs cologne to your nose, the same one he had worn for as long as you could remember.
âI understand,â you said.
âThese days, itâs a specific seagull Iâm fond of, actually,â he said.
âHuh? Like a breed or something?â you said.
âNo, just one bird in particular,â he said. âIt did me a really huge favor recently.â
âWhat are you talking about? You always say that you suspect I was dropped on the head as a baby, but between the two of us, I think the one that was dropped was you,â you said, the fraying ends of your rejected feelings driving you to irascibility.
âA while ago, I was standing on the beach, feeling pretty annoyed with the world â as usual,â he said. âI had had to run from the paparazzi in order to go on this vacation without being bothered, you know, and I honestly was starting to question if Iâd ever be seen as a normal person. I get that the only thing Iâm good at is soccer, but itâs pretty tiring to be thought of as a guy who kicks balls around and nothing more.â
Unbidden, you inhaled sharply, because the story was starting to sound familiar. Spinning on your heel, you were met with the sight of Sae smiling shyly, peering down at you through his unfairly long eyelashes.
âThat seagull mustâve known how I was feeling. Thereâs no other explanation for it all. It mustâve known how I was feeling, and somehow, it managed to find the one person in the entire world that saw me as something other than that. Do you know what it did next? It stole that personâs sandwich, and it led her right to me,â he said.
âAre you talking about me?â you said.
âHow many people do you think have called me a short, ugly, D-list celebrity instead of asking for my autograph upon meeting me?â he said.
âProbably not very many,â you said. He chuckled.
âProbably not any,â he said. You rested your forehead against his shoulder.
âProbably not,â you said. He stroked your hair, though his motions were like a marionetteâs â he was not very used to this type of relationship, after all. But he was trying his best, and you found that to be far more endearing than any suave gestures mightâve been.
âI know you have to go soon, so I was planning on not saying anything,â he said. âWhat would be the point? I figured this was just a summer fling for you. But then you had to go and be all sentimental, and I had to say something.â
âIâm glad you did,â you said. âIt wouldâve been worse if I had returned home without knowing at all. Where do we go from here, though?â
âWhere do we go from here? Let me think. Well, Iâll ask you to be my girlfriend,â he said. âAnd youâll say yes, because who would ever reject me? Then weâll talk on the phone every day, and you can send me photos of things you find funny, and Iâll have a sixth sense for when youâre eating French fries and Iâll send you strongly worded texts in reprimand. Youâll fly over to watch my matches whenever possible, and when Iâm on my next break, Iâll come visit you and meet your family and friends properly.â
âGetting a little presumptuous, arenât we? What if I say no?â you said.
âWill you?â he said.
âNot sure. How about you ask and find out?â you said.
âIf youâre going to say no, then I donât want to,â he said. You stuck your tongue out at him.
âI canât be with a man whoâs afraid of rejection. It was nice knowing you, Sae,â you said. âSee you around. Hope you lose the Champions League.â
âWait! Iâm not afraid of rejection,â he said. âY/N, will you be my girlfriend? Officially, I mean.â
âYes, of course,â you said. âBut youâre going to have to buy my plane tickets if you want me to watch you. Even with frequent flier miles, I doubt I can afford coming to see you that often.â
âConsider it done,â he said. You grinned at him.
âYou know, if youâre my boyfriend, then youâre going to have to keep paying for our dates, as well. My mother said thatâs the gentlemanly thing for you to do,â you said.
âRight, I was expecting that,â he said. âDonât you think thereâs a reason why I havenât let you buy anything yet?â
âThen how am I ever supposed to apologize to you for the circumstances of our first meeting? I mean, I was pretty harsh,â you said.
âThatâs true,â he said. âLet me think.â
âMhm,â you said. âI know that thatâs out of your comfort zone, so Iâll give you a minute.â
âI have an idea,â he said, though it was accompanied by a slight glare at your jab.
âWhat is it?â you said.
âClose your eyes,â he said. You obliged, squeezing them shut, though not without widening your feet into the defensive stance he had demonstrated to you on the day he had attempted to teach you basic soccer skills.
âWhat are you going to do, tackle me or something? Iâm using the position you taught me, but please be gentle, youâre way more muscular thanâ!â
You were cut off by him pressing his lips to yours. It was a soft kiss, gentle and light, like feathers in the air or water against the sand, and he pulled away before you could really react or reciprocate. He had left you wanting, and you knew he knew that, because there was a smugness to his voice when he spoke next.
âApology accepted,â he said as you blinked at him in shock, your mind still lagging well behind your body. âNow weâre even.â
âHold on,â you said. âIâm suddenly feeling very repentant and remorseful. Are you quite sure you forgive me with just that?â
He laughed. It was such a lovely sound, his laugh, and you wouldâve told him so if you werenât afraid that heâd stop when you pointed it out.
âMaybe not,â he said. âYou might have to apologize a bit more.â
âThat sounds doable,â you said. âYeah, I might be able to work that in. Itâll be agonizing, but a wise man once told me that thatâs just the nature of apologizing, so itâs the least I can do, right?â
âOh, shut up,â he said, holding your face in his hands and leaning in. You did the same, your eyes closing all on their own as you sought out the connection he had deprived you of earlier.
As the sun set over the horizon and the seagulls settled in for the night, he kissed you again.
