Blurry lights pass by. The sounds of the road, the rumble of the car’s engine, and a soft song from the radio are the only things to be heard. There’s nobody else out at this hour, all having long since gone home. Either that, or they’re at the bar. For the unlucky, at work or forced to try and sleep in the cold.
I left work about twenty minutes ago, so I count myself pretty lucky, all things considered. Things could certainly be better—but they could sure be a hell of a lot worse, too. At least I’ve got a home to go back to. Someone waiting for me.
Hopefully, she’s already in bed. I don’t like it when she stays up actually waiting for me. She means well, but she needs her sleep.
“Hypocrite,” I imagine her saying with a fond roll of her eyes.
Fair. But I’ve always been more of a night owl. You early birds need to rest—how else will you get up early enough to catch those worms?
Her soft laughter echoes in my head. My lips quirk up into a sleepy grin. I can’t wait to hold her close, legs tangled together, her soft hair in my face, all warm and cozy in bed...
I’ll be home soon, Lu.
My phone tells me it’s ten till 12 when I finally pull into the parking lot. I can’t help but smile at my lock screen; it’s a picture of the two of us at the botanical garden, where she’s leaning over to kiss my cheek. Stepping out of the car, the cold shocks my senses, helping me to wake up a little. It’s as nice as it is awful. I can’t wait for spring. Hm, maybe we could go to the botanical garden again. That’d be nice. A stroll, just the two of us, looking at all the pretty plants.
“Oh, just look at this one! I’d love to have one of these in my garden,” I can picture her saying as she points to some lovely flower or shrub or what-have-you. And I’ll ask her what it’s called, so I can remember to get her one later. No clue how she’ll fit anymore into the jungle she’s growing in our apartment, but I’m sure she’ll find room somewhere. It’ll be worth it to see how her eyes light up, that smile on her face, dimples showing…
“Ow,” I mutter as I walk right into our door. Its cold surface, combined with the pain, makes me jolt. Blinking, I take a step back, and huff. It makes a little misty cloud in front of me. Once again, I consider myself pretty lucky—nobody saw that.
No time to be getting lost in thought right now. I can always do that tomorrow. Hopefully without the embarrassment of walking into anything like an idiot. God, I really am tired…
After a bit of fumbling with my keys, I manage to get the door open, and step into the apartment. The lights are off. It’s kinda cold...she must’ve forgot to turn the thermostat back up. I’ll just—a yawn interrupts that thought. Mmm...eh. Oh well. Sleeping in the cold’s supposed to be better for you or something, anyways. I slip my shoes off, shutting the door behind me as I do.
I take a quick stop in the kitchen to grab a granola bar. Not really in the mood for actually sitting down to eat. On the way there, I almost slip a few times. Shaking my head, I try to wake myself up a little more, but I don’t really feel any less off. Just...need some food in me and some sleep. That’s all. So I eat my snack, and as I leave, I glance over at the fridge. I expect to see a note on it, saying that she saved me some leftovers or just a sweet, “I love you,” but there isn’t one. It makes me frown a little, before I shrug it off. She was probably busy.
Making my way into the bedroom, I note the her-shaped lump on the bed. As quickly and quietly as I can, I strip down, opting to just leave my clothes on the floor, figuring I’ll put them in the hamper tomorrow. Goosebumps rise on my skin, and I shiver as I hurriedly change into my PJs.
At long last, I climb into bed. Even here, under the covers, it’s not as warm as I thought. Another thing goes against my expectations when she doesn’t subconsciously shift towards me the way she usually does. A small pit starts to grow in my stomach. I try to ignore it. After all, it’s probably been a long day for her, too. So I shift instead, reaching out to grab her and pull her close.
Her skin is like ice under my fingers. I flinch.
“Honey?”
When she doesn’t respond, I hesitantly reach out again. The cold of her makes my hand sting.
“Babe.”
I try shaking her. She doesn’t move an inch. Like her whole body is frozen in place.
“Lucy…?”
Sitting up, I blindly grab for my phone on the night stand. It takes a few seconds, and each one makes bile rise in my throat higher and higher, but I finally get my hand on it. Fumbling, I turn it on and swing it towards her. There’s a brief moment of guilt, knowing that if I shine the flashlight on her like this, she’ll definitely wake up—but then it occurs to me that…
Snowflakes shimmer in the light, suspended in the air all around. Icicles glitter, sticking out all over the place. She shines brightest of all, covered in a layer of frost amidst it all. Her eyes are open, staring at me sightlessly.
I blink. Frozen. Swallowing the bile back, I squeeze my eyes shut. Take a deep breath. I open them. But she’s still there. Still…
“911, what’s your emergency?”
I don’t remember having dialed. I can’t look away from her. She’s still glinting in the light from my phone’s flashlight bouncing off the wall.
“My...my girlfriend, she...I…”
“What happened to her?”
What happened? I don’t understand. How...how did this happen? Everything was going so well. We were happy. We were situated and together and she was good, and I was good, and...I don’t...I don’t understand. I don’t get it. How? Why? Why is she…
“Ma’am?”
“S-Sorry. I...I don’t...I’m not sure. I-I just...I came home, and—she’s—I-I-I…”
“It’s alright. Is she still breathing? Can you tell me where you live?”
The operator says something about sending help. That everything will be okay. I don’t know how he can say that. How it could possibly be okay. Because Lucy, my Lucy, is gone, she’s right in front of me and she’s colder than that frozen lake I fell into when I was 12 and she’s just staring, staring at me, through me, covered in frost and she’s here, right here, yet she’s gone.
Everything melts away. His words turn to mush. The world turns into a lukewarm puddle.
comic based on this fanfic of the same name by Blizzard96! This is the ending scene so, if you don't want spoilers from this comic, I'd suggest reading the fic first.
rest of the comic under the cut! warning for canon-typical gore
this fic personally devastated me and left me heartbroken, and I couldn't get the ending scene out of my head. so I did the very normal thing of making a whole comic of it, probably my fourth one ever. well I definitely wanna make more so it was a good learning experience!
my favorite pages are 3 (love Simon's close-up face here) and 9. comic roughs and creative notes can be found on my Patreon and Ko-fi!
i think we should start openly mocking male creatives who can't figure out how to write women. like actually i think it's embarrassing that it took elliot page transitioning for christopher nolan to give him a good role. why did it take like ten years to get the first female lead in a marvel movie? why is it a Known Fact that stephen king can't write women? why is 50% of the population omitted from large ensemble works? i asked my friend to name a movie directed by a man with a majority female cast and he said ghostbusters 2016. ghostbusters. ghostbusters. g

If your system doesn't account for the fact that Parents Are Going To Be Abusive/Neglectful/Insufficient then it objectively sucks I'm sorry I don't make the rules
Monitored bank accounts for those under 18. Requiring parental consent for medical procedures. Parental controls on personal devices. "We won't teach this at school because parents are supposed to address it at home." Anything that puts all of the child's power onto the parents' hand, anything that assumes parents are going to inherently do enough of a good job no one else needs to interfer, every single one of these IS going to be used by controlling, neglectful or unprepared parents and already are, and if the system did not account for that very real, tangible, dangerous tendency, then it's not worth fucking anything. You shouldn't make things "for the youth"/with children in mind if you are going to overlook this painfully common aspect of their lives u_u
When those GPS trackers for cars were released, specifically advertised for parents to put in their child's car, I saw the ad on TV and said out loud, "God... I wonder how many abusive parents and spouses are gonna use that to keep their victims from escaping."
My dad was sat next to me and his eyes got big as saucers. He was so quiet when he replied solemnly, "I didn't even think about that... jesus christ, that's dark..." and I had to tell him I had friends who were probably gonna end up in that situation with their conservative parents. He was so removed from the notion of using that device for cruelty that he didn't even CONSIDER it! That's how easily people can be bought in by inventions/legislation advertised under the guise of "keeping the kids safe". My own father, who is a beautiful and gentle man with a good head on his shoulders, was ready to advocate for a tracking device, because it was sold as a device to "protect children".
Children need more protections from abusers, yes, but the biggest protection they could possibly have is AUTONOMY. GIVE CHILDREN AUTONOMY.
i just dont think communists are going to cut power to hospitals while on the other hand private equity might and quite literally "america" and its collaborators will bomb a childrens hospital
And once again for the people in the back: political revolution is about regime change - something that happens pretty regularly around the globe without massive disruption to manufacturing or trade.
If you hear "revolution" and think we're going to somehow lose access to modern technology and have to go back to subsistence farming and herbal medicine, I suggest reading less dystopian YA and more history.
people will live in racially/ethnically homogenous european countries and say "native americans benefit from being in the imperial core" meanwhile native americans have had to endure centuries of genocides and displacement. meanwhile native americans are victimized at sky-high rates despite comprising a fraction of a sliver of the population in america. meanwhile a woman in my city was just indicted for embezzling $400k in funds that was supposed to go to improvement and maintenance of tribal lands.

my notifications are once again devolving into a spirited debate about the ethics of actions that could potentially make someone uncomfortable, and at risk of sounding like someone about to get a lot of irate anons I think we're frankly giving way too to much moral weight to hypothetical discomfort
the thing about discomfort is that it's an extremely nebulous category that can be triggered by virtually anything and that's far too broad a category to have any inherent moral quality to it. like. my mom was mad uncomfortable when I stopped shaving. that didn't mean I was doing violence against my mom it just meant she needed to get over herself. many such cases it must be said.
It's not just that they're doing corruption, but they're doing the kind of corruption that is basically "guy hands over a cartoon money sack with dollar signs on it" corruption.
When I got my current job they made me sign a form acknowledging that I'll be immediately fired if I accept free mcdonalds or an amazon gift card from someone at a rival firm
